Final Masquerade

Rate this book
Paige Carmichael must’ve had a premonition that her life was about to take a turn for the worse.

One of the books she’d just finished reading was How to Change your Identity and Hide from Anyone. That was when she saw her fiancé murder his best friend and associate. And call in one of his flunkies to remove the body. This wasn’t what she signed up for when she agreed to marry Stefano Santangelo. Sure, she knew he was involved in organized crime , but he’d sworn it was numbers running and things like that.

She isn’t about to leave the four-year relationship without something to show for it.

Paige takes one of his precious antique coins and 750K from his safe, and runs. She changes her hair, her walk, the kinds of foods she eats.

Then one day she meets Christian Charles Beauchamps

He’s driving a truck to make money to open a landscaping business. He’s handsome and charming, and eventually convinces her to confide in him.
Chris falls for her—or so he says.

But when she sees him whispering to a suspicious bearded guy, she takes off again. Can Paige finally escape Stefano’s grasp and have a normal life?

Cindy Davis is the author of 22 mysteries and romantic suspense novels, and several non-fiction books. She’s a 20-year veteran free-lance editor, and a recent transplant to the land of sunshine where she can be outdoors twelve months of the year rather than the four or five in New England. Cindy and her new husband Rick do a lot of hiking and swimming. They like to travel—next on the bucket list is Italy. The last trip to Rome produced a novel Lethal Dose of Revenge (being marketed now) which made it TAX DEDUCTIBLE!
Personally, she’s addicted to coffee—particularly chocolate raspberry flavor. And don’t anyone dare get between her and her life-loves: Ben & Jerry. Other than that, she’s pretty laid back.

Maybe it's the warm weather!

I travel around absorbing earth energy and doing motivational speaking.

How to Escape the Mob
Witnessing her fiancé murder his best friend pivots Paige Carmichael onto a headlong flight. Without time to consider the danger, she takes some money and a precious coin out of her fiancé’s safe. Then she absconds with her booty. Her hope that clever disguises will help her gain safety backfires again and again. So far, this novel doesn’t distinguish itself from most suspense fiction. What makes it stand out is that the protagonist learns that there’s more to life than shopping and looks. At first, a shallow character, Paige learns that friendship, honest work, trust, and love for pets, as well as humans, enriches life. Recommended

Paige Carmichael leads a very pampered, comfortable life with gangster, Stefano! That is, until she witnesses a murder. From that point on her life would never be the same. She's on the run, changing locations, changing her identity, occasionally changing her accent. When she meets truck driver, Chris Beauchamps, her life takes even more turns -- ones that involve trust, distrust, attraction, and trying to escape him and her feelings for him. Chris takes her cross-country to help her lose Stefano's men. This story is filled with intrigue and I wanted to keep reading to find out what happened next. The author, Cindy Davis, has a knack for storytelling - keeping you on the edge of your seat. Her characters are incredible and so are the situations she throws them in. She included some extraordinary settings. Loved this book and would highly recommend it.

Great premise for a story; Paige sees her mob connected fiancee shoot and kill his best friend and associate, then order the body to be removed. Knowing she can no longer marry a man like that, she knows she has to leave and disappear, because her fiancee is not a man to allow her to leave him...and live. Paige leaves, taking his cash and a medallion he cherishes.
Much of the book details Paige eluding the people her ex-fiancee has sent after her to capture or kill her. Changing her appearance, living small, she moves from state to state, always on the run and wonders how it's possible that she is always found. Paige has a suspicion that he had a tracking device implanted when she had a nose job, and that device allows him to know where she's living. Yet she does nothing to prove or disprove that idea.
With nothing positive done about her situation, she still buys a house and decides to settle down.
The book ends quickly, with everything ending nicely.

Ok, so suspend your disbelief just a bit, and enjoy this book. I know, nobody could do half the things she does without id or a credit card. Still, I was willing to overlook that for the anticipation of what would happen next. Unfortunately, the ending left me just a little bit confused, as though the author wasn't quite sure how to tie up those pesky loose ends. Still 4 stars, because I truly enjoyed the suspense.

I really enjoyed the first half of this book but unfortunately the second half read, at least to me, like a different author had picked up the story. The fast paced suspense and drama fell away and monotony and total implausibility took its place. The ending and prologue were not only disappointing but completely unbelievable.

Two stars for this one since I did enjoy the beginning. A good rework by a solid editor could clean up the plot holes and typos and turn this into a good story.

Paige is on the run from the mob which is lead by Stefano. Because she also took his precious coins before running. The story is about how she escapes from the people sent by Stefano to kill her.
Fast and engaging read

This is a twisted and intriguing story. Paige Carmichael got involved with the wrong man. However, getting away from Stefano Santangelo is not going to be easy. The man has connections and many of them are not people who play nice. The author has taken this story into a place that readers will enjoy. This is the first book I have read by this author, but a great writing style means it won't be the last.

This was a great storyline and would have been 4 stars. But, and it’s a big but for me, it needed a final editing and proofreading. As a proofreader I’m particularly annoyed. But there were way too many typos and words missing in sentences. Plus editing should have caught some storylines that weren’t meshing.
