For a book called Nuclear Winter, this book is a hell of a lot of fun. It's filled with heart and excitement along with figuring out your life in your twenties. It's both light and fluffy and yet filled with danger. Like Giant Days, it's just a book that fills me with joy. I hope this isn't the last we see of Flavia.

The action picks up again in the last volume, with Flavie getting re-involved with her meteorology department at her former university. While the weather has been warmer recently, the research team needs to get readings from various weather stations to determine trends. Marco is half-living with Falvie, but their interests are very different and they seem ill-suited for one another. On the other hand, Alex from her team seems like a great guy and seems to be a better match for her. The team needs to visit the nuclear plant that blew up years prior, and Flavie risks radiation poisoning to get the data that is needed. The last few pages put a neat bow on the story, showing Flavie and her sister leaving Montreal for a much-needed vacation when Alex shows up.

The words that I would use to describe the entire series are cute and light-hearted. Despite this, it actually showed a nuanced view of relationships. Flavie realizes her first boyfriend was no good and then later comes to understand that while Marco wasn’t a bad guy, once the initial appeal of him wore off, she saw that he was using her for what she could do for him and there was no lasting connection between the two. Sometimes you have to go thru some toads to find your prince.

I read the first volume for the January pick for the I Read Comics Books book club on Goodreads, and then quickly read the two following books in the series, once I discovered that I liked the vibe of the first. The French-Canadian author and artist Caroline Breault (aka CAB) created a fun world, and I’m glad it was translated into English for more readers to enjoy!

I liked volume 3 more than volume 1 (by far), but not quite as much as volume 2 overall, although some parts definitely shone.

I LOVED the way it explored the lore of the world and the new environments in a way that logically involved Flavie and still managed to not raise the stakes to something unbelievable or cartoonish. The power plant was great. The way Flavie used her skills and connections to get in was great!

When the book started I was struck by how Flavie was like, "oh no, a Friday night at home alone? no way, i gotta go do something" which was so DRASTICALLY different than her characterization in volumes 1 & 2. But this actually became a totally valid plot point and showed some real character growth so it ended up being a wonderful little detail.

We didn't get enough Elsie but I'm glad she was there to some degree.

Marco was a little weird in this book but I do like the overall message of complicated relationships and dealing with arguments.

I didn't like how the one three-eyed character that was part of their group just disappeared off-screen. I know the explanation was that the power plant was too rough for her but it seemed totally out of the blue and wasn't set up.

I hated how Flavie caused the issue near the climax that caused her to have to be all dramatic and risk her life - it was completely her own fault, it just made her seem stupid.

I HATED the 'romance' in this one, ugh. Alex was set up to be a protective friend character and was okay enough, if a little dumb, but also EXTREMELY bland and sort of just generally kind without being interesting at all. And then out of nowhere they kiss at the end??? Eugh. Why. It felt totally out of left field at the end and was not a pleasant addition for me.

Still, I enjoyed the heck out of most of this book, and I hope the series overall continues!

Welcome Back!

I hope everyone is doing okay! I know things are a bit different right now for everyone but I hope we are all doing okay. I have been trying to use this time at home (I have been staying home literally as much as possible) to read more, catch up on some cleaning and organizing, television and movies, and video games. I have also been spending a lot of time with my husband (which has been awesome, we usually do not get a lot of time together). We are currently playing through Fallout 3 together for the first time (which has been fun)! I never played a Fallout game until 4 and he had played and owned 3 still so it's been a nice adventure for both of us. Tomorrow the new Animal Crossing game comes out and I am beyond excited to be able to start playing that as well (I am a huge Animal Crossing fan and he has never played any of the Animal Crossing games so it will be the opposite of the Fallout situation). While playing all these games (and watching television and movies) I have picked up several books! One of the graphic novels I read recently was the last volume of Nuclear Winter!

SPOILERS AHEAD

It's finally warming up and things are going for Flavie while kind of great. Her relationship with Marco is a bit rocky right now but just like how she fixed her relationship with her sister maybe she can fix her relationship with Marco! Flavie is also going to help a group of university students. Flavie never finished her degree but they are working on a project that could use her navigational skills and expertise. Going on the adventures with the university group leads Flavie to some dangerous places but it also leads her to some discoveries about herself!

This was the perfect conclusion to this series. I loved how the author wrapped up Flavie's story! I also still loved the art style of this volume and thought they did a great job with the adventure scenes. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with this series and I would definitely try more graphic novels from this author or illustrator in the future! If you are interested in checking out Nuclear Winter or Flavie's story I read these on my Hoopla app from my local library! I am giving this volume five stars on Goodreads, this may even be my favorite volume of the series!

This is the kind of sweet, friend-centric fun that I'd come to expect from a Boom! comic, and for the most part Nuclear Winter is an enjoyable, if not especially deep read that feels like what we'd get if we mashed up Steven Universe and Gamma World. The big issue here, really, is that the whole thing ends right as it is just getting interesting, and as the narrative and its characters start having some real weight to them. Not everything needs to be 30 volumes long, but Nuclear Winter cut itself short at only three volumes.

Excellente B.D. !

This was a fun conclusion to the series. We meet some university students and Flavie agrees to assist them with their research project. The project takes them to weather stations in other providences where they are collecting data — and they have quite the adventure. There is also some drama with Flavie and Marco!!!

I love this story. I would give it 4 stars, but sometimes I read the bubbles out of order, which I think speaks to the way they are laid out, which bothers me. But other than that, it’s really great. I want to know what happens next!!

This author refuses to show the character being developed on the page
They just skip around and u see the character act completely different
There wasn’t enough development for Flavie to become exoverted all of a sudden and we never knew Marco well enough to justify this whole behavior

Janvier 2025.

I liked this series, short and sweet slice of life set around a courier who lives in Canada in the middle of a nuclear winter. The definition of gentile comic reading.

A good end to the series that I truthfully would have liked to see a lot more of. Thanks for the ride, Cab!

Gets back to some of the charm of Volume One, although I was left wanting more of these characters beyond the nuclear winter.
