Summer ends, Fall comes, and then Winter kills everything with snow, ice, and bitter winds.
The five tales of horror contained within these pages touch upon the worst of the season - from haunted Christmas presents to secrets hidden beneath a frozen forest floor.
So cozy up next to a warm fire, put on your fuzziest robe, and prepare to have your blood chilled.
Flint Maxwell was born and raised in Northeast Ohio and still lives there today with his beautiful wife and daughter, and their four furry best friends.
He primarily writes horror fiction, but has been known to dabble in many different genres.
This is a nice collection of horror shorts. While each one is written well, two stand out as favorites - A Few Steps Away and The Edge of the World.
The Toy - Creepy and made me hate old dolls and toys that much more. This one bothered me quite a bit for reasons I go into in my ‘final thoughts’ in my full review.
A Few Steps Away – An excellent story about the love between a boy and his dog.
Armed Insanity – The title for this one is perfect. Charlie has problems that are made that much worse by the decision to drive after having too many drinks.
The Fridge – I’ll never look at a refrigerator the same again.
The Edge of the World – Excellent horror short. Exactly what I’m looking for when I want a good horror story.
These were fun-filled shorts and I do hope more will be in the making! :)
The Toy was a crazy one. I didn't expect that one at all and to have a toy to do something outrageous blew my mind.
The Fridge one was like: "Are you kidding me?!" I don't even want to be near my new fridge now!
I won't spoil anything but basically all five stories were truly chilling tales. I couldn't put the book down and continue reading to the end. Plus it was cool to know where Mr. Flint Maxwell got his ideas. It's really neat.
Is anyone interested in a great horror short? This is the one. I'm going to reread it when it comes to Halloween. I recommend this book to horror fans. P.S. Please make more horror shorts! It would be fun to do a horror short of Grady..."hint going on here..."
I wouldn't say any of the stories were really terrifying. I think I would describe them more as fun. Like every collection, every reader will like some more than others. For me, A Few Steps Away and Edge of the World were my favorites. I enjoyed The Fridge not for its terror but got the visuals it conjured up. I found it very funny in a way. The Toy was okay, but I saw that ending coming early on though not quite the way I thought how the wife would react. I'm reading a trilogy of novels. Between reading book one and book two, I read a Flint Maxwell novel and between books 2 and 3 I read this book of short stories. Maxwell is becoming one of my favorite writers.
I enjoy creepy short stories. But not all books can deliver each story that you want and have to read. THE BITTER COLD has 5 perfectly creepy stories that do deliver! The Toy reminds me that all toys are not so cute. A Few Steps Away and The Fridge deal with our emotional attachments. Armed Insanity is crazy good to read! The Edge Of The World got me creeped out good! This is my favorite, then Armed Insanity. I bought this last year (yesterday, new year's eve), and finished the next year (3:40 am 1/1/19) LoL 🎉🎊💫
