Tom and Kelly are on their honeymoon in Honduras. One day they go off on their own adventures to explore different areas, as you do on your honeymoon. Kelly comes across a small shop (called the Pigsty) and decides that the little pig figurines and items would be good souvenirs to give to some of her family. Once she's looked around a bit, she notices there are no employees present so she goes looking for someone in the Employees Only section. But inside she discovers that it's not your normal Employee's Only section, it's a high-tech computer lab, which automatically means they are terrorists.

What I liked
- The potential this book had.
- That's pretty much it.

What I disliked
- Let's get started.

- I've never been on a honeymoon but I feel like your marriage is not off to a great start if you're spending a time you would normally spend together, apart. but to each their own, I suppose.

- The terrorists (even though it wasn't definitive, jumping to conclusions in this book always works) discover Kelly in their store and chase her out so she calls her brother who is a senator and gives literally no information. seriously. it is the most VAGUE call I have ever read. Here's how it went:
"Who's calling?" Mike demanded.
"It's me, Mike, I'm scared."
"Speak up. I can barely hear you."
"Mike, I can't. They'll hear me," she said . . .
"Who is they?"
"Never mind. Listen, I can't say any more over the phone. Mike, we've got to stop them. It's terrible. I saw what they're planning to do. It's just . . . it's just . . . Oh my God, Mike, unbelievably horrible."
. . . "Where are you, Kelly?"
"I'm across from their lab."
"Aren't you with Tom?" . . .
"Mike, I've got to hang up."

I mean, for someone in imminent danger, that conversation was the least informative thing I've ever heard. There was obviously a bit more, but it was mostly Mike using his assumptions to figure out who she was and then pointless thought processes that revealed 0 information. Fortunately for our characters, even though they constantly hold back information / can't relay it properly, everyone knows exactly what they need to know at all times because they make assumptions and jump to conclusions that are always correct.

- These terrorists are some of the least prepared people ever. Those who are in Honduras spent three months training to come over. Literally just three months learning both English and Spanish, learning their new backstory, and even getting surgery to make them look more American. They then proceed to come over and not know the language very well and can't get the name of the city they're supposed to be from correct.

- The male characters are generally assholes. The CIA agent is forceful and won't let up even when the situation is obviously uncomfortable. For some points it's his way of getting information, but there are so many other ways to do it you don't have to be forcing your way into the woman's life. And two more females are introduced into our main group (who are described as "lovely ladies" far too many times) and Tom is against their participation basically the entire time they are there. Why? Dunno. Guess because they're lovely ladies.

- The fact that Tom and Kelly are allowed to participate in any of these terroristic investigations. Tom is a cop for some city in the US and Kelly is a civilian. Neither have jurisdiction in another country and it would be extremely unsafe for either of them to participate in trying to catch terrorists.

- The antagonist, Dear Leader (or DL as it's constantly shortened to), is ridiculous. For someone who has meticulously planned to wipe out the power for an entire nation in order to invade, he does not know what he is doing. He doesn't even know what coast D.C. is on. He was just exceedingly inconsistent.

Overall not a book I would recommend unless you're specifically looking for a book you know you won't like.

While police sergeant Tom Thurbalow and his new bride Kelly are on their honeymoon in Honduras they spend a day exploring apart. While Kelly takes a tourist bus around the city Tom tries his hand at deep-sea diving. Unfortunately as Kelly Explores the beautiful Backstreets anD local shops she comes upon Pigsty, an adorable little shop who’s windows are bursting with beautiful trinkets that would make perfect souvenirs for her family. Kelli becomes so wrapped up in her shopping that she regrettably misses the bus and cannot find anyone to assist her with her purchases. As she explores the shop, eventually making her way into the back room, Kelly discovers 6 armed men. These men are clearly not happy to see Kelly and she fleas in fear of her life. Fortunately she finds her way back home to the holiday Villa, but when Tom finds out the events of the day he returns to the store to take photos that seem to indicate Korean involvement.

Enter the CIA. Here’s where things should’ve gotten really interesting however as a reader we are simply privy to conversations between rear leader and his subordinates Which are informative yet very dry.

I wanted so much to love this book! It has all the makings of a wonderful thriller and yet I found it to be very doll. The concepts were too far fetched while the characters were too shallow. I found myself not really caring what was to happen to Tom and Kelly because I had no investment in them. I wish that the author had pulled me in to these characters, made them relatable, made them lovable, but they fell flat. Tom and Kelly remained names on a page instead of developing into full characters I could feel excitement, terror, joy, or empathy for.

The audio performance was not enhanced with the narrator introducing the title, author, and narrator’s name at the beginning of every new chapter. Although I enjoyed the author and his performance he had very little to work with in way of enhancing the story.

An interesting concept that started off great, became quickly confusing, and lost the readers interest fast by bombarding them with excessive technical knowledge. Unfortunately I am giving this book one star out of four and would not recommend it.

EMP Honeymoon, according to the author, is a work of “faction,” or fiction based on fact – and for the most part, it was a tolerable one that kept me reading. However, in the end, the story was rife with characterization inconsistencies and generally poor plotting, with writing that “told” more than it “showed.”

Honey, let's save the world

Dorothy May Mercer's EMP Honeymoon is the latest instalment of escapades in her series of stories about the McBrides. Kelly McBride has just got married and is on honeymoon in the Honduras when she discovers an interesting little shop, with an even more interesting back room. Here inquisitive investigations have her aherttacked and thrown into a world of espionage involving a plan to destroy North America with an Electromagnetic Pulse (yes, that's the EMP).

Fortunately, Kelly is a McBride and, with the McBride training and contacts, the honeymooners on the spot - and friends - have to save the continent.

I'm giving it 3 out of 5 stars.

While the basic plot is good, and the pace is excellent, there are quite a few jarring points from both a literary and a technical standpoint. The story starts with a phone call in which an incoherent and panicky Kelly calls her brother Mike and fails to give any useful information, not even identifying herself. He has to guess who she is and recall where she went on her honeymoon, and then try to figure out what kind of trouble is in. His CIA contact has a 'she'll be all right and I can't tell you anything' attitude. Then when Mike calls her brother Tom, he panics incredibly, and she lies and says everything's okay.

These characters don't sound either professional or hero material (indeed the word 'idiot' kept coming to mind for one character after an other).

I don't think the jumping around back and forth in time does the plot justice: from the opening phone call to some things that are later and somethings that are earlier, and some that are just incidental and coincidental. The opening was unnecessarily hard to follow and could have been chronological with a far more exciting and straightforward start about leaving the bus, entering the shop and then running for her life.

We get quite a few different points of view, from all sides of the situation, and the story is clearly written to be light-hearted, tongue-in-cheek, even satirical – and perhaps also cartoon-like (we actually have a 'Flash Gordon'). There are many amusing overtones in the way the US and enemy president and staff/forces are presented, along with the incompetence (and even juvenile behaviour) of supposed professionals on both sides.

The technical (scientific and linguistic) details are in many/most cases quite ridiculous, but what might seem underresearched may well be deliberate comic effect and in jokes. Best is to be aware you shouldn't take it seriously, take it as designed to amuse rather than annoy.

Overall, it's an easy read and a light bit of fun, somewhat reminiscent of cartoon/comic-derived stories and movies. I quite enjoyed it once I turned off my brain (or at least quietened the quibbles to a dull murmur).

"I saw what they are planning to do."
Whilst in their honeymoon in Honduras, police sergeant Tom Thurbalow goes off on a day sailing trip whilst Kelly, his wife, takes a tourist bus round the island. During a stop in the journey, Kelly starts to explore the back streets and finds a shop with the unlikely name of the Pigsty, window filled with gifts just right to take home for the fami!y. So involved does she become, Kelly misses the bus departure, but then cannot find anyone to pay for her armsful of piggy pressies. Which is when she goes through a door with a no entry sign and is chased by a group of six armed men obviously intent on doing her harm. She managed to find her way home to the holiday villa without further incident but later, when Tom is informed, he returns to the store to take photos which seem to indicate some Korean involvement. The CIA enter the equation and the reader is also treated to conversations between the Rear Leader and his subordinates as well as .machinations within the American security system.
It should have been a good book but, somehow, it was just dull. Or silly. Or both. This reader felt no empathy for any of the protagonists involved and, for all of the various bursts of information, tension or excitement, felt none of it: more like a boring text paper. This was not helped by the introduction of every chapter by the tile, author's and narrator's name as well as chapter number. The narration itself was good, just, it too recalled the reading of a report paper. Put simply, this one was not for me: I found it hard work trying to focus and finally gave up on it approximately an hour from the end.

E-M-P Honeymoon is a work of fiction based on fact. I had high hopes for this book. A thriller filled with a bit of romance… but it was disappointing. At points I got frustrated with the storytelling and the inconsistent characters… and it made me just want to stop reading it. But I carried on, to see how the story finished. My main problem with the book was the obvious poor plot planning, the writing didn’t take you on a journey, instead it just told you about it.
The first chapter immediately begins pulling the reader into the story-telling world of Dorothy May Mercer. We are painted a detailed picture of a small town as we are introduced to the main characters: newlyweds Tom Thurbalow, a policeman, and his wife, Kelly. The couple is honeymooning in Honduras and decide to spend the day exploring. Instead of spending quality time together, they seem to spend most of it apart. Which is the first thing that seemed strange to me. So if you’re looking for a book with romance… as the author suggests this book is… you might want to go find another one.
Kelly stumbled up an adorable little shop filled with shiny trinkets that could possibly act as great souvenirs for her family. That was one of the only parts of the book where I could relate to Kelly. As she explores the shop, she accidentally wanders into the storage room where she discovers six armed men. Safe to say, they are not happy to her, and Kelly fleas in fear of her life. She makes it back to their holiday villa where Tom is already waiting for her, when she tells him about, he returns to the quaint little shop and after his light investigating, he indicates that this is the work of Korean criminals. Soon after the CIA gets involved and the book turns into a “save the country” theme where Americans stand off against a evil terrorist mastermind.
The main pot plot is also introduced in the first chapter. Instead of being integrated gradually it is thrown into the face of the reader… and honestly it felt a bit overwhelming. The book kept a good pace throughout, doing a terrific job in keeping the reader engaged in the story line, and even managed to have a very satisfying ending to tie things up.
Even though throughout the book conversations between characters offer nearly no information or value, somehow every conclusion a character jumps to… ends up being correct. Even the conversations between the CIA agents are painfully dull. Which when you really think about it for a moment breaks the 4th wall and the illusion of the storytelling. Another thing I found funny was how ill-prepared the terrorists were. They supposed spent months training for the mission… but then it all comes apart when they can’t name the city they are supposedly from correctly.
The entire investigation has a lot of issues. First, all of the male characters are not kind to say nicely, but the CIA agent assigned to the case is pushy and makes the entire situation feel uncomfortable. If this was the author’s intention… then congratulations, they managed to make even me feel uncomfortable. There are plenty of different way he could have used to gain information, instead of annoying women. While I’m on the topic, the book sadly lacked strong female characters. The main character, Kelly, is alright but I could not form any attachment to her. Nor did I form any attachment to Tom. I couldn’t care less about what happened to the both of them. When two other women are introduced into the investigation, they are far too frequently described only as two “lovely ladies”. And Tom seems to hold a grudge against them for no good reason, maybe they were just far too lovely for him.
As for the main antagonist… DL as the book calls him, is the worst evil mastermind I have ever read about. It is said he had planned this for a long time, that he has all the details worked out… and yet he couldn’t tell you where D.C. is located. Has he during his planning never glanced at a map?
This book was not the worst one I have read… but it comes up close. It is definitely not a book that I would recommend to anyone. It started out as a very interesting concept and the first chapter with its lovely descriptions pulled you into the plot… but then quickly became confusing and dry. I lost interest about midway through the book. Unfortunately I’m giving it one star out of five.

The title “EMP Honeymoon” piqued my interest, and I decided to give it a read. This suspenseful story has elements of international intrigue, espionage, and romance to make it a quick page-turner. Author Dorothy May Mercer seems to have put extensive research into the world of international geopolitics, military training, dictatorships, and atomic explosives. The story is set largely in three locations: Honduras, the mainland United States, and another location in East Asia.
Newlyweds Kelly and her husband, Sgt. Tom Turbulo, are on their honeymoon on a sunny Caribbean island when an innocent shopping trip leads Kelly down a rabbit hole. Throwing caution to the wind, the couple decides to explore further and discover a sinister plot to destroy the United States with an electromagnetic pulse (that’s the EMP referred to in the title). They swing into action, and soon a US team is set up with other players flying into Honduras.
The story simultaneously switches locations to a country in East Asia where an unhinged dictator called DL (Dear Leader) presides over the making of a bomb in a secret location. Unlike the other characters, who are pretty much vanilla, DL’s character is inscrutable, as is the lady spy Su-jin, whom he appoints to carry out the operation in Honduras. It was interesting to read how spies are selected, trained in certain behaviors, and even undergo lip plumping and breast implants to fit into their covers.
CIA agent Steve is the most endearing character in the story; his crackling chemistry with agent Sharon is more convincing than that of the newlyweds Tom and Kelly, whose passion appears to center solely around calling each other "darling," "sweetheart,” and “honey.” It’s not too convincing, so thank God for Steve and Sharon and their playful banter!
I would rate this book 4 stars because it was a short and easy read. At times, however, it felt as if too many characters with similar-sounding Western names were thrown in all at once, making it difficult to tell who was who. The points of view shift frequently throughout chapters, and short paragraphs are occasionally given headers in bold, such as "Washington Panics," "Pentagon Reacts," and "Cynthia's USA Team Examines Launch Platform." It felt like unnecessary handholding.
I did not detect any obvious flaws in the editing, and there were no sexually explicit scenes. Older teens and young adults will enjoy this book, as will readers with a penchant for Intel agencies, spies, etc.

"Do not judge a book by its cover," as the saying goes, and this book is no exception. Kelly McBride and Sgt. Tom Turbulo's idyllic honeymoon in "EMP Honeymoon" takes a sinister turn when an apparently innocent shopping trip reveals a global plot to destroy North America. As Kelly and Tom negotiate danger and intrigue, readers are kept on the edge of their seats by the story's surprising turns.

Positives: A Smooth Combination of Thrills and Science Fiction
"EMP Honeymoon" has a narrative that flows well and skillfully combines science fiction tropes with unexpected turns. Readers are captivated by the story from the start and are kept interested all the way through. Because the author uses scientific terms to enhance the plot, this science fiction book is among the best ones out there. It also includes a description of those scientific terms to help readers understand and expand their imagination. The captivating plot and skillfully written descriptions enhance the overall reading experience.

Surprisingly, "EMP Honeymoon" is flawlessly edited, with no flaws. Nothing, in my opinion, detracted from the overall quality of the book. The engaging plot and seamless narrative flow ensure a satisfying reading experience.

For its captivating storyline, seamless narrative, and successful fusion of science fiction and suspense, "EMP Honeymoon" deserves a five out of five star rating. The book is a page-turner with an unexpected ending that will leave readers speechless. This book is a must-read for fans of the genre because it demonstrates the author's skill in crafting an enthralling and memorable story.

The audiobook E M P Honeymoon by Dorothy May Mercer tells the story of Tom and Kelly, who are on their honeymoon on a Caribbean Island. While Tom is on a diving boat checking out the coral reefs. Kelly goes off on the Excursion bus. Whilst out, she discovers an exciting shop where she hopes to buy souvenirs for the family back home. Kelly spends a while choosing gifts, and when she is ready to pay, she realizes there is no one else in the shop, not even a shop assistant! Peeking around a door at the back of the shop, she is shocked to see a strange hi-tech lab. A burly man sees her, grabs her and tries to drag her away. She fights back and gets in a taxi back to her holiday villa. The first thing she does is shut the windows, pull the curtains and then call her brother Senator Mike McBride. Kelly is so scared that she does not make much sense and hangs up before Mike finds out what is wrong. He is worried and calls Tom, who gets in touch straight away. Kelly does not want to spoil Tom's day, so she dumbs down what has happened. Their honeymoon is not the romantic and relaxing holiday Kelly and Tom had hoped for as they find themselves caught up in international intrigue and a plot to blow up North America using an electromagnetic pulse.

There was not much I liked about this audible book, and I only managed to read 50 pages. The idea for the story was good but poorly executed, even though Dorothy May Mercer has obviously put time into researching areas of the book. I did like that there were no swearing or sex scenes.

The narrator Scott Ellis has a dreadful voice, so staccato. It is also extremely annoying that this has the title, chapter, reader's name and author's name at the beginning of every chapter. This really interrupts the flow of the story. It was also very odd that Kelly's brother. Senator Mike McBride does not recognize his sister's voice when she calls him at work. Su -Jin, the young commander of a top-secret mission for the People's Army, does not make sense. Who has undergone meticulous training, including how to throw a frisbee and facial reconstruction. She gives herself away when she is unsure how to wear Western clothing.

The story changes direction all the time to the point that I had no clue what was happening in some areas and had to rewind this audible book to relisten.

I would suggest this is aimed at older adults looking for a book to read on the beach.

I would rate this book 0 out of 5 stars as I did not enjoy it and would not recommend it to anyone. I feel that if this book had been adequately proofread and edited, the things mentioned above I did not like would have been picked up on. Dorothy May Mercer has proudly written 5 novels in 7 months; sadly, it shows in this audible book!

"Dorothy May Mercer's novel, 'E M P Honeymoon', takes readers on a thrilling adventure as newlyweds Kelly and Tom navigate unexpected dangers on their honeymoon in Honduras. The story begins idyllically but quickly turns into a world of espionage, danger, and moral dilemmas, set against the backdrop of an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack.

Mercer skillfully combines elements of espionage, science fiction, and romance, creating a gripping narrative that explores teamwork, sacrifice, and the power of individual contributions. While the ending may feel a bit rushed and there are minor errors, the engaging plot and compelling characters make this a standout read.

'E M P Honeymoon' is a masterful blend of humor, suspense, and adventure, perfect for fans of both science fiction and romance. With a thought-provoking exploration of an EMP disaster, this book is a must-read for those seeking a literary masterpiece that's both entertaining and thought-provoking. I highly recommend it, giving it 4 out of 5 stars."Okay

What Dorothy May Mercer has created here is a light-hearted adventure combining the elements of a newlywed couple (who are not all that romantically inclined having just been married) and the fast-paced “save the country,” theme as Americans verse the evils of a tyrannical dictator. While spending their honeymoon in Honduras, Kelly, and Tom stumble upon a plot by a terrorist third-world country to launch a weapon of mass destruction at the United States. Tom, a police officer, is quickly joined by two top notch female agents when it is learned that Kelly, the daughter of a high-ranking U S official, may be in trouble. Meanwhile a CIA agent, Steve, is tracking a small cell of terrorists--the lead of which stumbles along near comically in her attempts at blending in--lurking in the Caribbean resort from which they are to implement their attack. Yet this was only half the evil plan, for controlling their entire operation is the demented dictator, overseeing the entire operation from his homeland . . .
The cast is typical for a plot like this; the characters interchangeable with any in the trendy genre. Its transparent plotline and character arcs left little to the imagination as it had all been done already thousands of times. In addition to this, nearing its conclusion, I found the storyline thinning as the author pressed ahead with the action and ultimate climax, seeming to leave behind pertinent details as to plausibility when it came to such a terrorist endeavour. I did, however, find the novel to be quite entertaining, deserving just shy of 5 stars—giving it the full 5 anyway. It was the type of something that takes you away for several hours, planting you firmly in the exciting world of “could something like this really happen?”

Kelly and Tom are on their honeymoon in Honduras. They stumble upon the operations of terrorists plotting to destroy North America. They join forces to solve the mystery with team members from Senator McBride's office in DC, the CIA and the top secret Space Force. Any person who enjoys light romance with a twist of intrigue should read this book. The vast array of colorful characters make the plot flow easily and without a single boring moment and each one of these diverse characters provides a perspective into the conflict and delights the reader with witty dialogues. There is no sex or bad words in this book. It was a good read!

Passive but anxious story

The story took off quickly. I liked the headings except some kind of gave away the content... spoilers. The anxiousness I felt was intriguing for me as although the USA team came up on many occasions a possible gun fights as I was expecting now and then they got away with their stealth activities quite well. A good read.

Electromagnetic pulse Adventure

I really enjoyed the "what-if" plot and the interview part with Dr. Peter Kinney and his explanation about a solar flare which is strong enough to cause major damage.
I also found General Lee to be a smart guy who had his safety ensured. If you want a feel good read, a light novel or another Mc. Bride series book then you should read this book.

EMP, A terrifying threat by a rogue nation.

A charming thriller about the honeymoon of Kelly and Tom, turned into an action packed adventure, when Kelly stumbles on a plot by North Koreans to launch a missile against the United States which will neutralise its entire electronic infra structure with an EMP pulse, rendering it helpless in the face of an invasion by a hostile army. This is another book in the series of senator Mike McBride and his security team, headed by the capable Cynthia. She sends out two of her agents to help Kelly and Tom, but in the meantime, her new husband, Colonel Sky Easterman also has to combat the same threat with the newly established Space Force which has been placed under his command. Apart from being an exciting plot with plenty of action, it also includes a dose of romance and light humour. The scientific and procedural detail included, also combine to make this a realistic and absorbing novel to read.
