Cy-Kill and his Renegades declare war on human civilization… and they’re winning. Go-Botics freshman A.J. Foster and cynical Go-Bot race car driver, Matt Hunter, along with their friendly Go-Bots Scooter and Turbo, flee for their lives as they desperately search for some way to stop the extinction of mankind and the dawn of the planet of the Go-Bots!
Sigh. I loved Go-Bots as a pre-teen and always thought they had a lot of potential comic story-wise. So I was very much looking forward to this reboot. But the writing is just bad. I think I could have written better as a pre-teen. The dialogue is ... simplistic would be the polite word, but really, just plain stupid is more appropriate. It tries to be more "adult" by, instead of any depth in story or character, injecting a more explicit level of violence. It's a modern comic, that's not unexpected, but it just feels more like little kids saying, "Oooh, look, we can make Go-Bots bleed! We can kill humans! Tee hee." The art seems an intentional throwback to the 80s with ink and pen on paper style. Cool concept, but the sometimes crude art coupled with the inane dialogue just makes it all feel very subpar. Issue one was the same, but I wanted to give it a shot. I was really on-board for bringing back the Go-Bots but I'm not compelled to read any further and that's a shame.
The Renegades Go-Bot revolution has begun. The first thing Cy-Kill does is burn down a Big Pharma building, and take out power plants and dams. Cy-Kill's posse goes around kicking humans and eating them. For the first few pages the story was somewhat coherent, but immediately stopped when the focus was shifted away from Cy-kill's gang.
Things just happen randomly that doesn't follow the prior page or panel. It's almost like Tom Scioli did all the art first without having an idea of what the story would be about. It's like he's playing mad-libs with his own work. It could be why the writing is so stilted and as if an 9 year old wrote it.
A really solid and dramatic follow up to the first issue that features some more of the interesting old style science fiction ideas I liked from that and one of the most brutal one on one robot rights I have ever seen. It will be interesting to see where things go after that cliff hanger.
