Annette Marie is the best-selling author of over thirty books, including the expansive urban fantasy series The Guild Codex, epic urban fantasy series Steel & Stone, and romantic fantasy trilogy Red Winter.
A 2015 Goodreads Choice Awards Finalist in Fantasy and an Amazon Charts Bestseller, Annette has sold over 2 million books. Her books have been translated into French, German, Polish, Ukrainian, and Russian, with readers coming back again and again for her addictive blend of fast-paced adventure, tantalizing forbidden romance, and unforgettable characters.
Annette lives in the frozen winter wasteland of Alberta, Canada (okay, it’s not quite that bad) with her husband and their furry minions of darkness. When not writing, she can be found elbow-deep in her garden or an art project while blissfully ignoring all adult responsibilities.
This is a super short story about one of my favorite characters in the Red Winter series. I recommend reading the trilogy, or at least the first book of the series before reading this novella.
I really liked Yumei in the trilogy, he is mysterious, secretive, and quite appealing. I wouldn't mind reading a whole book about him! Prince of Shadows explains how he became the Tengu, and how he came to have his unusual powers. Still, there is an aura of mystery that remains around him, even after finishing this novella about him.
Yumei! Possibly the most intriguing supporting character in a series. Ever. Finally gets his own little story. The first short story is his origin tale. It raises questions about what makes him so special when compared to the others of his kind. The only way to read this, and get more of his story, is to subscribe to the authors newsletter. Loved it! One thing I do hope for is a full length novel featuring Yomei in the future. A girl can dream.
Ugh. Yumei. And here I was thinking I couldn’t love you more than I already did. Well I was Wrong AF. Ahhhh so happy rn.
[Honestly, it was instalove anyway, as my married name means raven, and so I have an obsession with them (funny that I have always been like that with only just foxes & ravens, given the original story). Haha.]
But he, as a character, is just so absolutely addicting & fascinating; the more I got to uncover about him in the original trilogy the more enamored I was. This story increased that to the nth degree. He IS STILL a huge question mark and so I was over the freakin moon to learn about this story coming about & that Part One had already been released.
***OKAY, so;***
This is the first part in a larger story about Yumei’s (from the Red Winter Trilogy) origins and I am here to tell you that it is an absolutely freakin’ fantastic start to his story! You also get to see more beloved characters again (yay!!!) in another light, and the best part is...
I GOT TO RETURN TO THE WORLD OF THE RED WINTER TRILOGY.
I absolutely cannot wait for Part Two! Gimme gimme!
How Annette managed to write such an interesting beginning to an undiscovered tale within less than 40 pages is beyond me. This is exactly what every Red Winter fan knew they needed and more.

I received the first few chapters of this through the author's newsletter and OMG I need to know more! Yumei was a prominent and secretive character in the Red Winter Trilogy, so I'm ecstatic to know more about him as a whole. I can't wait for the full story to get released. It's got a promising start from the few chapters that I've read so far!
Considering the book is being released in installments, I’ll have to wait to give a proper review, but so far, although I liked it and would keep reading, I’m not enjoying it as much as the main Red Winter series.
But I definitely love where the book is starting! Yumei must have come a looooong way from this book to where he’s at in Red Winter! Now it’s even harder to see him as anything other than a bird in a human’s body!
A short story about the best side character ever, my favorite Yumei!! He deserves his own book or spin-off series, anything... Fingers crossed for a full-length book!

The Red Winter trilogy is one of my favorite series from this year and I am constantly recommending it to everyone. So I was thrilled to find out that Annette Marie was releasing a multi-part short story focused on a much-loved character from that series. Even though this installment was over too quickly, I really enjoyed this brief look into Yumei's past and his life within the shadows and darkness. The appearance of two Kunitsukami was also fantastic and I cannot wait for future updates.
There is absolutely no reason to not give this 5 stars.
Sure, it’s teasingly short. But it’s a very good short story! Ok, I might be 100% biased because of YUMEI, but seriously, it’s gold. I can see the proper book progressing from this and I can barely contain my excitement!!!
I love my cinnamon roll, grumpy prince of shadows 🖤
This is a novella spinoff of the red winter trilogy (which was my favorite read of 2018) and it follows Yumei. All I can say is that Annette Marie just blessed us fans of that trilogy with this new work. I cant wait for the next one.
Yumei has always been an intriguing mysterious character that I longed to discover more about. I enjoyed this little short and how to uncover more about his story.
i was so confused on how to get this digital novella but i loved the red winter trilogy more than my life so i was determined. this is a really short story on how yumei became the elusive raven prince . i think there was meant to be more but i'm so late to reading this series so i don't think i recieved everything from her newsletter? i love love love yumei so this was a cute little read with annette's captivating writing as usual. but it's so short 😞 more emi shiro and yumei scenes when !!!
Although it was a short story, it shows how a mere raven became The Prince of Darkness and then transformed into the Tengu named Yumei. This short story reveals a little about Yumei’s backstory. I enjoyed it because he is my beloved Prince of Darkness.😍😍😍🫠🫠🫠
Gosh, Yumei! I really really hope we get more of your story now that you are free! This is a super short novella just giving us a brief glimpse into the beginning of Yumei.
A really interesting introduction into Yumei's past. My issue? IT'S SO SHORT :'( I know there are more installments to come but I'm too impatient for that!!
This is the first in a set of short stories that Marie said she is going to release about Tengu. It was very very short and talks about how Tengu was drawn out of the shadows.
The story was well written and the background was interesting. I would recommend to those who have read the Red Winter series and want to learn more about Tengu.
Overall this was a very quick short story but provided some interesting background to the Red Winter world. I would recommend reading after you read the Red Winter series so that you understand the impact this story has on Tengu.
If you found yourself smiling at the way Yumei changed in the Red Winter trilogy or you just can't get enough of this fantasy world of yokai and kami, you need to get started reading this first (of, with any luck, several) short story that focuses in on our favorite grumpy crow. I personally cannot wait for the next one. If you aren't subscribed to Annette Marie's newsletter where this little gift came from, why not? Get to it.
