Josie is a dark fantasy, paranormal romance and historical fiction author who writes about lost worlds, dystopian societies and morally-ambiguous monsters (vampires are her favourite). She has published multiple novels and short stories. Most of those are set in the Silverse, an apocalyptic world filled with vampires and zombies.
Josie is the founding editor of indie fantasy magazine Indie Bites (www.silversunbooks.com) and the writer of the urban fantasy podcast Jack Valentine, Vampire Detective (www.jackvalentinepod.com). She’s currently working on vampire murder mysteries (the Seekers series) and a YA series centred around Atlantis and the lost civilisations of the Mediterranean (the Deluge series). Researching the latter is the first time she’s used her Classics degree since university. Josie lives in Oxford with her husband and two cats (Sparky and Gussie), who graciously permit human cohabitation in return for regular feeding and cuddles. The resulting cat fluff makes it difficult for Josie to wear black, which is largely why she gave up being a goth. Although the cats are definitely worth it, she still misses her old wardrobe.
Vampiric nobles control the Earth and all of humanity. The last city standing is on the brink of destruction as the blood supplies become contaminated and the Blue has been breached by the outside Red. Is the Red really a land of death and desolation or have the humans been told lies to keep them compliant? Only the brave or the desperate would venture out there…
Josie Jaffrey takes us back into this dystopian world with another highly emotional, razor-sharp and magnetic read, THE SILVER QUEEN as the search begins to find the lost queen to save their world and their king while one brutalized human braves escape into the unknown when death is preferable to her existence within the Blue.
Loyalties will be tested, traitors will hide in the midst and the threat of contaminated blood, the unknown and failure loom. Will this be the end of the vampire rule? Is humanity prepared to take over or will chaos be the final master?
Forget about racing through your reading, the tempo will change and it brings another layer of atmosphere and depth to an already brilliant creation from this author. The unknown is always looming just ahead and I held on to each page as another layer was exposed, another twist unraveled!
Dark, gritty and filled with deviously delicious twists, Josie Jaffrey has taken center stage on another amazing read! She has, once again, managed to bring it all together with characters of depth, dialogue that screams natural and an atmosphere that makes chaos seem tame.
I received a complimentary ARC edition from Josie Jaffrey!

I received the ebook from the author in exchange for my honest review. This was an exciting second book in this series. I adore Lucas and Julia and we learn so much more about all the characters. With all the Weepers and blood drinking it has the perfect spooky vibe for this time of year. There is also a major cliffhanger at the end that left me excited for the last book
To say I was eager to dive into The Silver Queen is an understatement. My feelings were well beyond mere eagerness, as I was desperate to dive into the second book in the Sovereign series. In fact, after finishing The Gilded King all I wanted to do was devour more of Josie Jaffrey’s work. Therefore, as you can imagine, I devoured The Silver Queen.
The Gilded King, book one, set the standard for the Sovereign series extremely high, with The Silver Queen easily living up to the standard. As with the first book, I was addicted from the very first page. You’re thrown straight back into the story, with things moving at a rapid pace from the get-go. If you have yet to read The Gilded King, however, you will be at a disadvantage – so go back and read it now, you will not be disappointed.
With The Silver Queen, we’re thrown even deeper into the wonderful paranormal dystopian world introduced to us in The Gilded King. We have more of the dystopian society, more of the vampires, and more of the zombie creatures plaguing the world. Not only do we have all the goodies we were introduced to in the first book, elements are introduced that leave us curious about each of the aspects.
As with the first book, we follow two stories throughout, with them intertwining once more. They were very different kinds of stories, yet both were fabulous. It’s impossible for me to say which of the stories I enjoyed more, as both introduced so much. I loved all the characters, I loved watching the development, and I loved the twists. Usually with stories that follow multiple characters I can pinpoint a clear favourite, yet I’m head over heels for all the characters and events in this story, making it impossible to say who or what is my favourite. Everything is wonderful, everything is addictive, and I need more of it all.
Honestly, I adored The Silver Queen. It took all we’ve come to know about the world through the first book and make it even more intense. There was more action, more drama, the romance continues, twists and turns were thrown in, and I cannot help but internally squeal about the reveals. The things we find out in this book – wow. I’m even more desperate for the third book than I was for this second book, as some of the revealed details have left me shook. I could rant and rave for a very long time about the things we find out, how they impacted me and left me desperate for more, but I’m not the kind to leave spoilers – just know, this book introduces so much, promising us a mind-blowing final book in this trilogy.
Without a doubt, The Silver Queen was a fabulous second book in a wonderful series. Josie Jaffrey has a way with words, with telling a story, that sucks you in so deep that you forget about the real world around you. The story hooks you, the characters come to life, and by the end of the book the only thing you’re feeling is a desperate desire for more.
As you can imagine, the moment I get the next book I plan to consume it in the blink of an eye. The desperation and eagerness for the final book in this series is insane.
This book was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Josie Jaffrey!
The Silver Queen is the second book in the Sovereign series and continues the story of Julia and Cam.
The Silver Queen was yet another amazing book written by Josie Jaffrey. I was so excited when I got this book in the mail and I couldn’t wait to read it. The story is so fast paced and well written, it’s so hard to put down the book.
Julia is definitely one of my favourite characters because she’s so strong and independent. I also cannot get enough of Lucas because he’s so special and I guess I’d fall in love with him too! I also really liked Cam and Felix. I wasn’t really sure what to think of Felix because The Gilded King ended pretty weirdly, but then at the end of The Silver Queen Felix told the truth about everything and that changed my opinion of Felix. I’m also really happy that Josie Jaffrey included an LGBT+ relationship in this story!
The Silver Queen ended with a major cliffhanger, just like all Josie’s other books and I keep on thinking who it could be. For those who’ve read the book, you know what I’m talking about and I think it’s someone we already know but I’m not sure if my guess is right.
The Silver Queen was an excellent read, and I cannot wait for the third book. The Sovereign series and the Solis Invicti series are both so addictive and I highly recommend them!
I was very excited to jump into this book after Gilded King, especially after reading that Emmy and Sol were back..... YES! Josie keeps to the original characters of this series, Lucas, Julia, Cam and Felix. However the character perspectives are Julia and Cam. I asked Josie on Twitter when will we be meeting these characters again, she has informed me February 2019, just in time for my Birthday. I did ask if Emmy and Sol will be the point of views, but we will continue to see this story from Julia and Cam's view. The ending though (oh my god it's cliffhanger material). What I liked about this book was the continuity, drama and growth. Cam and Julia are back, and facing more drama and destruction than ever before. The flip between each character in each chapter is fluid. I enjoyed Julia's journey more in this book, she to hell and back, as a result became a fierce independent woman.
The ending was very well done, throughout the book we're left guessing why Emmy is so reserved, secretive. When Sol and Emmy finally meet..... well you have to read to see it's an OH MY GOODNESS moment. This is why I am super excited for the next instalment. The name I do not know as Josie is still writing.
The book didn't really leave me with any feelings, apart from suspense, this book mainly focuses on their journey's rather than relationships. Can they save the Blue, and return their Queen back to their King.
What I disliked - I wouldn't say there was any real dislikes with this book, however I found the story slower than the first. I did find I skipped a few lines here and there (oops don't tell me off). However I can tell that Josie is trying not to rush, she wants us to enjoy the story and get to know these characters, as well as dipping into the other characters surrounding them. On the other hand, everything sped up in the last 75%.
I have always loved Josie's stories this year. My love for these characters kicked off with Emmy and Sol in the Solis Invicti series which I read earlier this year. Then the release of the Sovereign series drew me back into reading when I was in a funk. I do prefer the first book in this series compared to this one, only because I felt the pace was a lot slower and there was more action once we reached 80%. I am excited to read the next instalment. This series is suitable for younger readers, definitely plenty of fantasy, vampire creatures.
I gave this book an overall rating of 4/5 stars. But I hold high hopes for the 3rd book early next year.
“The last city on Earth is contaminated. Now blood is the only thing that can wash it clean.”
Book two in the Sovereign series picks up where book one left off.
After the grand battle in the Blue, Julia finds herself desperately trying to survive whilst the Nobles fight over the few remaining humans. However hiding out in abandoned houses doesn’t last long and Julia soon finds herself assigned to a new master. With Lucas gone and no one else able to protect her, Julia knows she needs to leave the Blue or die at the hands of a monster.
After Cam’s return to the Blue, he sets out with a group of Invicti to rescue his queen. However with an army to overcome and not all of his friends proving to be loyal or trustworthy, the mission Cam has dedicated his life to might not end how he hopes.
The Silver Queen felt much more character focused but I would have liked more of Lucas and Julia’s relationship. Although the story didn’t allow for much of this, I hope that we’ll get to see it develop further in the final book. Julia’s individual character growth has been fantastic though! She started off feisty and fairly weak, however in this book we get to see a different side to her and she shows just how strong and determined she is.
My only criticism of book two is that it was too slow at times especially in the first half. I felt like there was too much trekking through the forest and not enough action. However having said that when the action did start, it was full on!
Another well written story of blood, betrayal and bravery set in the fantasy, dystopian world we were introduced to in The Gilded King.
3.5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️.💫
Thank you to Josie Jaffrey for providing a copy. All opinions are my own and provided willingly.

Book review: The Silver Queen (Sovereign #2) by Josie Jaffrey (4 stars)
“I feel like I’m losing my mind.” “ Then we’ll find it together.”
The Silver Queen (Sovereign #2) by Josie Jaffrey Genre: YA, Romance, science fiction-dystopian Rating: 4/5 stars
(Review) (DISCLAIMER: This review is based on my opinion only.)
The last city on Earth, the Blue is contaminated and only blood can wash it clean. Julia is trapped in the Blue as the Nobles fight for rights over the little humans left and before she knows it, she is assigned to a new master. On the other hand, Cam has gathered his friends to go into the Red and retrieve the Queen but there seems to be some traitors in their midst.
I was so happy when Josie sent me an email for both the cover reveal and for an eARC of the book and immediately jumped in on the chance since I remembered loving every other book from both the Solis Invicti series and the first book in the sovereign series.
I still can’t remember who Charles was (Can someone tell me in the comments? Is he the one who kidnapped the Queen?) and spent a good 15 minutes trying to search through my old notes but to no avail.
This 2nd book picks up right after the first book and told in a similar fashion of alternating POVs between Julia and Cam. The characters and world easily sucked me back in and it was like an easy conversation with an old friend, one that you easily lose track of time because the things talked about was that good. I also liked how information was carried throughout the story through the characters meeting.
The pacing was slow, but not in a bad way, because it helped build up everything to the climax of the book. The stakes were higher than the first book and this one was even more action packed.
After finishing this book, I immediately wanted to read the next book because I had SO MANY QUESTIONS!
It was an emotional roller coaster and I absolutely loved it! I love that we already know the title for the last book and I really can’t wait for it! It’s definitely a bittersweet thing too because it would conclude the Sovereign series.
Really enjoying this series, I really need to catch up on the other Author’s work. The Author has a very great ability to immediately suck you into the story, to suck you into the world she has built. You feel for the characters, you want to see how they survive.
Everything is in grey, there is no pure good and no pure bad. The characters you see as the ‘bad’ guys you know there are multiple layers to why they do what they do. Survive, need for attention, need to feel something. Yes, they go about it the wrong way, but in a sense, you do understand why they are doing what they are doing.
Can’t wait for the next book. There is a next book right?!
(Disclaimer: I received a free copy from the Author. Does not affect my review)
The Silver Queen by Josie Jaffrey is the second book in The Sovereign Trilogy. It begins where The Gilded King had left off. It would be a little confusing if you start this book without reading the first one.
I’ve recently read the first book last January and I blame my short memory for forgetting a few things. I was a bit lost at first but I immediately found my way after reading a few chapters. The Silver Queen follows The Invicti as they search for the Queen and Julia as she fights her way out of the Blue.
Characters From the first book, Julia is a new attendant assigned to the young noble, Lucas. She was described as a naive one who never wanted to be an attendant to be fed on in the first place. The best character development award in this book goes to Julia! I am so proud of her. Jucas also seemed to be stronger and more mature. GUYS, THE BOND OF THE TWO!! God, I swear THEY REALLY BELONG TOGETHER. They’re both a little stubborn but they look good.
Julia was pictured in The Gilded King as someone who should always move gracefully and serves the nobles. But she was always curious about going out into the Red. Julia finally had her questions answered about her parents but her search for them continues. I’m so proud of her because she learned how to fight and she was able to fight her way in the forest all by herself. It was like a transformation from a graceful lady into a kick-ass one! I swear you didn’t imagine the innocent Julia jumping on rooftops in the first place. *winks*
Lucas is a freaking gentleman and oh boy who doesn’t love men like that (well, maybe some and idk why). Then he started to get even tougher. In The Silver Queen, he traveled with the Invicti and was also trained how to fight. But I still have a lot of questions about who he is, where he came from, more background! And I think I’ll get my questions in the last book in the trilogy and I’m so looking forward to more of Lucas!
Cameron, an Invicti has been searching for the Queen (yes, the silver one). Another adorable couple is Cameron and Felix!!! Loving the M/M romance here!! Though sometimes they frustrate me because there still are secrets and I just want them to be happy because they deserve it. But they’re too complicated sometimes aaaaaaaaa
More of the characters were introduced but some of you guys already know I have a problem in remembering too many names. But the idea of Cam’s team is so great. I enjoy reading how they each have their own roles. They compliment each other and the way they fight together, I’d love to see them in action! I can also imagine Attack on Titan’s Survey Corps because of them, lol.
More characters were introduced in here and fortunately, a bit of their backstory was told too! With this group of extraordinary and well-thought characters, I can’t wait to know and read what their final roles will be for the next book!
Setting & World-building The setting is still the same with The Gilded King. The land is divided into two: The Blue, which is supposed to be a safe place was infiltrated by weepers (zombies) in the previous book; and The Red which is the unknown (believed to be unsafe since weepers can be anywhere here).
The highlight of this very book I think is to show the readers what life at the Red is like. It was like being introduced to a whole new world. The spotlight was on the Red and how they lived outside the barriers. Because of course, the first book focused on the safety of the Blue and it’s now time to explore the unknown. I picture the Red as literally a red forest though Josie made the statement in the book that there’s no colors, LMAO. It’s the same land with forests and the colors were just how people labeled them. Still, I can’t help but imagine two sides with each a color of blue and red.
I also learned a few new things about its world especially the matter of the blood (which actually plays the biggest role in the trilogy). The story behind the contaminated and uncontaminated humans, the silvers (vampires) and the weepers (zombies) is really intriguing. Another kind was also introduced in this book, it was a tacitum, I think? And I’d want to learn more about them!
Actually my favorite part of this world is the story about The Gilded King and Silver Queen. It’s a wonderful love story but should be taken seriously. I live for mythologies including the ones in an author’s created world. By reading two books of Josie, I applaud her creativity and how she managed to weave these elements into one great story.
Plot, Pacing & Writing Style Okay, you see the pattern here now. Book 1 is about the (Gilded) King, 2 is for the (Silver) Queen and the last in the trilogy will be all about the (Blood) Prince. It was another thrilling read. Though it was a bit fast and a bit slow at some times. Still, I devoured the last chapters and wanted more!
Josie Jaffrey had written a wonderful adventure though it still is a little bit overwhelming at most parts. But ignoring that buy taking it all, you’re in for an exciting ride!
It’s easy to get absorbed into the stories because it really is interesting and I guarantee you that you’ll want to learn more. Well, it’s not every day that you’d stumble into a book with zombies and vampires in it. And oh, it’s not just fighting and myths. There’s politics and a kingdom is at stake.
The last chapters did great in building up the hype of reading the last book in the trilogy.
Wrapping it up, This really is an exciting sequel for the first book and I can’t wait to see how the trilogy concludes! I also think that Josie’s books are a bit underrated and everyone should at least try them out! I swear it’s worth the read! I recommend this to fans of vampire and zombie reads. This would also be a great read for people who craves for adventures!
Overall, I rate The Silver Queen by Josie Jaffrey, 4 out of 5 stars!
I RECEIVED A COPY OF THIS BOOK FROM THE AUTHOR HERSELF IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW.
Any of you who have been here a while will have seen my review of The Gilded King and will know that I had very high hopes and expectations for the second installment of the trilogy.
Well the day has arrived! I finally got to read more, and I am so very happy. Josie Jaffrey’s writing is an absolute pleasure to read. This series perfectly toes the line between humorous and serious, bouncing between moments of pure fear where blood runs in the streets and moments where a group of highly trained vampiric soldiers see someone flirting with their friend and suddenly remember that important thing they had to do somewhere, anywhere else. Each character is fleshed out and made real with their own ways of speaking and behaving, their own motivations, fears and weaknesses. In short, these stories just make me happy, and in the second installment of Jaffrey’s dystopian vampire trilogy my love for Felix the rugged woodsman remained strong, and Julia – already wonderful in her own right – secured her position as an absolute hero by fearlessly shooting a vampire in the face with a crossbow.
Iconic.
“She knows her own mind, and she doesn’t need you to make it up for her.”
The Silver Queen picks up just moments after The Gilded King left off. Red and Blue have collided with bloody and devastating consequences. Chaos reigns supreme as contamination threatens the tenuous order of things, and as the Nobles fight over their claims to blood and power, Julia and her fellow humans can hope only to survive. Julia is really the star of this book. Without Lucas acting as her vampiric protection, she fends for herself with determination and strength. In a world where blood is the ultimate currency, Julia takes her perceived weaknesses and turns them into strengths. Nobody will expect the fragile young serving girl who struggles to walk wearing shoes to be dangerous, and that knowledge is what she uses as armour.
“Neither of them was paying the slightest bit of attention to her, probably because neither of them actually considered her a threat. In the circumstances, it wasn’t difficult to take a moment to sight the crossbow correctly…”
My hero.
Continuing with the dual storylines, stretching towards each other through the contaminated woods, Julia’s fight for her life is juxtaposed against Cam’s fight for somebody else’s. Deep in the mountains lies Emmy, the kidnapped Queen of the Silver. He has hunted for his friend for centuries, and now he has found her no man or woman, Silver or not, will stand between them. But years chained away in the shadows have left Emmy hollow and tortured. What they have taken from her, she will take back, with teeth and death and blood. An army marches towards the Blue City, and the Invicti fight to reunite their monarchs before war decimates them all. Without blood, without an army of their own, they have to get back to the Blue – but do they all have the same goal?
“He wanted to scream. He wanted to cry. But instead he stuffed the monster down inside himself and pushed his fist against his stomach to keep it there, while he prayed for sleep.”
The pacing of this story is well-maintained throughout, and I loved watching the two tales I’ve been following for so many pages approach one another and collide as the story progressed. The juxtaposition between the strictly maintained city and the wildness of the Red made it easy to recall who was where doing what without be having to flick back and forth, and most of the notes I took while reading it are things like ‘Sexy German flirting’ and ‘Julia literally cut their attacker up so he’d heal slower what a hero’ as opposed to me keeping tabs on timelines. We meet more of the Invicti as the fight for Emmy takes off into the Red, and this has only cemented my need to read the series before this (I’ve been dropping some pretty heavy handed hints about potential Christmas presents), they trained together for centuries, but so many years of stagnant peace in the Blue means they have forgotten much of the urgency of battle and must re-learn how to fight for their lives in a world where they have been the unchallenged top of the food chain for so long.
I love this series, and I’d highly recommend it! With action, romance, political plotting and supernatural fights for dominance, there’s something in there for everyone!

“What blood contaminates, only blood can cleanse.”
★★★★★
I was offered this book by Josie Jaffrey in exchange of an honest review.
This is the second book in this trilogy and even though part one was already absolutely amazing, somehow it got so much better and I just??? I was just talking with someone earlier this week about the whole stigma about self-publishing and the quality of the book and I can really say that Josie Jaffrey is the living proof that the way of publishing says nothing about the book.
It is really hard to write a review about what is so good about a book when you love everything in the book so much. I don't know where to start, as there is so much. Different sorts of love and romances, LGBT+ representation, every character (even minor ones) having strong and unique personalities and realistic turns of the story. Emotions are displayed very well, for each character and in every situation. People are hurt or mad and don't suddenly drop it for whatever silly reason. What everyone feels is realistic in their current situation and I think that makes this book really strong. The pacing differs from event to event to give everything the right energy, but it is never dull or too rushed. No pagetime is wasted and it creates the perfect vibe to just keep reading and reading. I don't know what else to say as I might just be repeating myself from when I wrote my review of The Gilded King, so I think I can suggest you to read that one aswell.
Do you know that feeling when there are multiple POV's, but those people haven't met yet and you want the POV's to cross? Well, in book one both MC's were close to eachother, but they didn't meet and in this book they do and the buildup to that was so good! Parts of both POV's were already bleeding in eachothers chapters, but the moment Julia and Cameron finally crossed paths just made the story so exciting. The best thing is that is was clear at a very early point in the series they weren't eachother's love interest and I think that made the excitement even better.
I would definitely recommend this series. It has strong main characters in a dual-POV, LGBT+ rep, vampires (though not called that and better in so many ways), zombie-like creatures written so much better than the average zombie story and beside all that, the journey on its own is so well written that you are just swept into the story everytime you start reading.
I really loved reading this book and it holds so much promise to the grand finale coming in The Blood Prince month and I look forward to be participating in blogtour tied to it! Oh, and great news: The cover reveal is TOMORROW, so keep an eye on my blog!
Blood was spilled. Hearts were broken. And the intoxicating FEELS in this sequel will have you reeling!!!
This book left me absolutely stunned! And I mean that in the most wonderful way. Josie Jaffrey brought me back into this deliciously dark and terrifying, but undeniably fascinating dystopian world without holding anything back. As I’m thrown deeper into this world, I was postively engrossed by Jaffrey’s beautiful writing, her creativity, and the perfectly broken and flawed characters you can’t help but love. The plot was wonderfully paced, utterly thrilling, and there was never a dull moment. I loved the twists and turns, the faboulous fighting scenes, the secret and lies, the confusion and heartbreak, the romances, the drama, the few lighthearted moments sprinkled here and there, and everything else in between. It was truly an addictive read and I enjoyed every second with every beat of my heart.
I enjoyed both the POVs. They were both different journeys, but still had the same intensity, thrill, and excitement. I loved the way Jaffrey merged them and how everything came together in the end. The story consumed me in ways that I never expected and left me incredibly concerned for the characters I’ve come to know and love. I really want to rave about EVERYTHING that happened in this book, but I’m not going to do that. You’ll just have to continue this adventure for yourself if you’ve already started, and if you haven’t, then you should cause this book… this series… it’s just so damn good!
The Silver Queen was a fantastic and thrillingly twisty emotional ride that I never wanted to end. With plenty of action, betrayal, mystery, romance and danger lurking at every corner, this book had me gripping the edge of my seat. The cliffhanger in the end left me desperately and in dire need to be back in this world and I’m so glad I don’t have to wait cause I’m sinking my teeth into The Bloody Prince as soon as I finish this review.
I received an advance e-copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest and fair review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I read the first book in this series - The Gilded King back in September and was instantly sucked into this unique, dystopian world (it also awoke my love for Vampire YA again!), so I couldn't wait to read the sequel - The Silver Queen. As the first book had set the standards high for this series I was slightly worried that The Silver Queen wasn't going to live up to my expectations. However, as you will see, my thoughts were utterly wrong! This was an incredible follow up.
As soon as you start reading you are put right into the action. As this picks up where The Gilded King left off you are thrown back into the story at a fast pace, which will get the adrenaline pumping. There were points throughout the book where I just didn't want to stop reading - you could say I was hooked. I also felt like as we were thrown straight back into the story that I didn't feel like I was forgetting anything that happened in the first book.
Just like The Gilded King there is a dual POV between Julia and Cam, this made me incredibly pleased as I really enjoyed alternating between both characters. This didn't deter at all from the pacing, which in my opinion, was very well-maintained. I really enjoyed the alternating settings from the city like atmosphere of the Blue to the wildness of the Red. I felt like I got to to know more about The Red in The Silver Queen and this in turn heightened my love of the series - the descriptions of each setting were so detailed and a lot of thought and world building must have gone into this.
Julia really is the star of The Silver Queen! Her character development was next to none. In The Gilded King she was seen as this fragile, weak servant. However, in The Silver Queen she is a fully fledged bad ass heroine! Her determination, strength and power really brings her into her own. Without Lucas to protect her she is forced to fend for herself and this is definitely one of turning points in her character arc. I also found Cam a joy to read in this book, too! His inner battle with his feelings for Felix and wanting to protect Emmy - the queen, really did get to me. I can't wait to see how this develops in the final book of the series.
The Silver Queen was a fabulous follow up in this incredible series. The story had me hooked, the characters just leapt from the page and the action had me wanting to read on and on. I honestly cannot wait to read the final book in this series..in fact I want it NOW!
I have developed a full on girl crush on Josie Jaffrey. She’s a great story-teller and a wonderful writer. She has created a vivid world where the smell of the streets, the look of the buildings, before and after the last war between the vampiric nobles fight for the remaining uncontaminated humans, becomes real...a world of characters I’ve loved from the beginning.
This book starts immediately after the events of book one, The Gilded King. Cam has gathered his closest friends to go into the Red Zone, on a mission to find and rescue Emmy, their Queen. Their journey is treacherous with potential enemies hiding and weepers lurking. Their worst problem, limiting their vampire speed, is limited clean blood. Many humans were killed or contaminated in the last fight between the nobles. They had an unexpected addition to their troop when Lucas, the young noble who had claimed Julia previously, is sent to join them.
At the same time, Julia and her best friend, Claudia, have had to run and hide in the aftermath of the destruction in the Blue. Eventually caught, Claudia is sent to the palace, while Julia is claimed by the brutal Rufus. With Lucas gone, Julia had no choice. Fearing that Rufus would eventually kill her, Julia makes plans to escape into the Red. She’s afraid of the Red, but more afraid of Rufus.
I have been following this world since book one of the Solis Invicti series where we first meet Emmy and many of the characters still being featured in this follow-up series. This is not, in my option, a stand-alone. My recommendation is that you start with book one of the Solis Invicti series, A Bargain In Silver, which is free right now on Kindle Unlimited and only .99 cents if you choose to buy. This is not an expensive series, and it’s one of my favorites. Get started now and...
I was really excited when Josie Jaffrey mailed me asking I wanted to review her second book in the Sovereign series. I loved The Gilded King and I knew The Silver Queen would be an enjoyable read. Since this is the second book, if you haven't read the first one yet, this review might contain minor spoilers.
The characters are now familiar and their alliances become apparent throughout the book. The two sides are clear now and war is brewing. Cameron is out to save his queen, while Julia tries to survive the changes in the Blue. I like where the story is going. The air of mystery is lifting, alliances are clear and a war has started. Jaffrey knows how to keep a strong pace even when there are larger time jumps. She's an excellent storyteller who knows how to use the tools at hand. Be prepared to read deep into the night to finish the book.
The storyline of Julia and Cameron have finally crossed, which is a good development. It does make the alternating perspectives harder to do. In one of the last chapters, the points of view switch halfway through the chapter. It was needed and made sense, but it did feel a little awkward compared to the rest of the book. Maybe it was better to have two small chapters to keep the consistency of the alternating perspectives.
I still loved The Silver Queen. Emmy, the queen of the silver, is back, and how. She reminds the silver around her why she is queen. I love how she's written. Strong, but still vulnerable. Most women in the Sovereign series are strong in their own way, but Emmy is different. Maybe because she already had power before she was a real character, maybe not. She clearly knows what she has to do to remind others of their place without being backhanded about it, like some of the others. I'm looking forward to seeing how Emmy grows in the third book.
I give The Silver Queen a 4,5 stars. I don't think it's as good as The Gilded King, but that has to do with the mystery. All of the mystery that was built up in the first one, is now resolved. Only one remains, but I think I might have figured it out. I'm definitely looking forward to the next one.
The Silver Queen is a very well written book by Josie Jaffrey. This book is the perfect second book in this Trilogy. In this book the action does not seem to stop and our Invicti seem to battle against all odds. The author came up with a riveting plot that had me glued to the pages. I had a difficult time putting this book down and was disappointed when I was at the end, that ended at a cliff hanger. I for one can't wait to read the final installation of this one to see how it all ends, unless of course the author will add more to the series.
The plot is very well developed with quite a few twists hidden within this book that work quite well. The book follows a great pace never dragging out the story nor does the author ever rush the reader through the book. There are a few surprises I didn't see coming which are always a huge plus in my eyes. There were definitely a few surprises the author made in regards to her characters so that is always big in my eyes.
Cam is by far my favorite character and I am not sure how I feel about Felix after finishing book two. So the jury is still out on this one and will have to wait until book three I guess. Em was a bit of a let down I have to say so we will have to see if she will rise to the occasion in book three as well. Sol really didn't get that much of the spot light so what he did get, gets mixed reviews from me really. I am still also a fan of Tommy and really did enjoy Viv.
All in all I had a great time reading this book and am curious to see how the author will tie it all together in the last book! There are still a ton of questions she has not yet answered so I am curious to see how she will get those all taken care of and I am sure she still has a few lined up that I am not even aware of yet.
And she's done it again! I seriously love Josie Jaffrey's writing. This series took me by shock in the first book and now that I knew what to expect this time around, I was not disappointed!
It's been a long time since I've been into vampire books, and I'm 98.9% sure that I'm still over them beyond this series. Jaffrey gives the human/vampire dynamic a new twist that makes it fun and interesting. For instance, the romances in this book are something out of a very imaginative and creative mind! The different relationships between humans and vampires, vampire and vampires, etc etc is a lot different than the kind I'm used to seeing and I love it. All of the characters continue to be really well written, and we get to see more of some people who were on the sidelines in the last book. The story line is great and paced much differently than I expected it to be, but not in a bad way. Somehow, Jaffrey can drag out the plot lines without making the story itself drag.
I love that the book is split into two viewpoints from characters who have absolutely nothing to do with each other (until the last 10% of this book). I am so used to forced romantic relationships between male and female main characters and I'm really pleased that Jaffrey took a different route and even gives us some ship-able LGBTQ+ relationships. The story is a lot of action packed in with just enough love, lust, and non-cringey romance to make everything flow really well.
This series continues to amaze me and I think I'm dubbing it my favorite from 2018. Yeah, you know what, I am. This is my favorite 2018 series. I can't wait to read the next one!
This book had its fast and slow paced moments but honestly there was never a dull moment. I didn't expect to enjoy this book as much as I do that even as I'm writing my review of this book, I can't stop thinking about it.
So, the story continues exactly from the moment the first book, The Gilded King finished. Everything was answered and just being back in this world where the Nobles are rescuing their queen, Julia is fighting for her freedom (I really love this because it just shows that she doesn't take crap from others and run away from it. I really admire her) and so many other things going on. It truly was a journey and an adventure!
The one thing that I was a tad disappointed was that when Lucas was back in Julia's life, she was willing to drop everything to be with him and I think that's just love but she got so independent being all by herself that I just wish she had even a little fight for what she really wants. But other than that, everything was just so good. Especially that last scene where the fought in the city back in Blue. It's like if people were doubting of Emmy being queen, then she's there ripping people apart and being all 'I darr you to fight me.'
I really thought that once I finish this book everything started to make sense and all. But then, another unexpected twist appeared right in front of me and I'm just pushing it all in not to be mad about that because I have until February which seems so far away that I have to wait that long to know what will happen next. But I'll wait patiently because this series is too good not to miss out on!!
Thank you again to the author for the ebook in exchange for an honest review!
The Silver Queen takes us back into the dystopian world of the Blue versus the Red. The Invicti find themselves in a race against time to find their Queen who has been lost for centuries out in the Red. Cam reunites with Felix who’s past isn’t as clear as he has been making it out to be.....and Cam is forced to make a hard decision. Trust the man he loves or force him to leave? Julia on the other hand is left in the Blue. Lucas is gone. The King is awake and calling for re-allocation of the remaining Attendants. It doesn’t take long to figure who she is assigned to. When he almost kills her, she makes her escape into the Red. Where she bumps into Lucas on his way back to warn Lorelei of the upending army. Little did they know she was the head of that very force. I definitely enjoyed this book. Especially the changes in each of the characters. Julia grows into this incredibly brave woman who realizes she has a lot more to offer then just her blood. Cam can finally breathe now that Emmy has been found.
But what happens when Felix.....disappears?
Unfortunately we won’t find out until February 2019, when the conclusion of this paranormal dystopian is released!
It's been a minute since I read the first book in the Sovereign series, but one chapter into The Silver Queen and it all came rushing back. It was like picking back up with friends who I hadn't seen in a while. There is no time lapse between this book and the first, but it is one you most definitely need to have read the first one to understand this one. It's a complex story line and readers jumping into this one would become easily lost. The Gilded King ended with the last uncontaminated city becoming tainted by treachery and blood. Julia is one of the few uncontaminated humans left and chaos is breaking out as the Nobles fight each other over the quickly dwindling blood supply (uncontaminated humans). Outside the walls of the city is only more destruction; Cam has taken several trusty silvers with him to go out into the Red to rescue his Queen and try to bring order and safety back to the city. Operating with the same alternating story lines (Cam and Julia); it's great to see the view of the world through such different perspectives. Action packed and full of betrayal, death, romance, and adventure. This is a high fantasy that readers won't want to miss out on! I can't wait for the third installment!
I loved reading this! The first book surprised me with how gripped I was from the first page, the first book I had come across by the author and I loved it enough to buy the complete set for her other series.
Having enjoyed book one so much, I had high expectations for book 2, and I was far from disappointed, rather surprised at how much I also enjoyed this! I love the stories that intertwine and run alongside one another, neither of which is ever predictable.
The story has many twists and turns, unexpected changes in situations and new threads being added, yet it flows so easily. I adore the authors writing style, which hooks you to each word, pouring over page after page as the images she conjures flash like a hot fire through your head.
Seriously though, the descriptions feel so real it’s as if I have been there, I’ve sat with the Characters through the challenges they faced, I’ve seen the friendships and trials, I’ve seen the Characters overcome so much.
If you enjoy Dystopian Fantasy, Vampiric tales with a different twist to them, then you really need to read this. I cannot say whether you should read the Solis Invicti series first, as I haven’t yet read it. I do know that they are of the same world, and yet I have fully understood the scenarios I have been given in THIS series regardless of not having read the others. They work easily as stand alone. What I can tell you, is that I am eager to get stuck into the other series, and I can’t wait to see what happens in book three!!
Nothing in this series goes as you expect, so enjoy the ride! I love the Characters, their realistic responses that are (haha) so very human, and their bad decisions that mix in with the good. I am so looking forwards to seeing what happens in the conclusion!
This is a series you need to set aside a few days and really get stuck into, have your snacks ready, a blanket, drinks. Grab a soft chair, and maybe a warm fire to snuggle in-front of, and maybe tell everyone not to speak to you. You won’t want to be disturbed!
A truly amazing book, I’m not feeling even slightly patient for book three!
Josie absolutely blew me away with The Silver Queen. It was kind of a slow start but once it picked up it took of running!! We once again have the dual point of views through Julia a servant in the blue and Cam one of the Invici a noble chosen by the King to be one of his most trusted guards. Servants are humans and nobles are the Vampires they serve. When Lucas Julia’s first noble abandons her and leaves the Blue to journey into the Red, she is placed with Rufus a ruthless master. In order to survive Julia makes the must difficult choice leave her best friend Claudia behind and escape into the red or stay and be murdered by Rufus. Cam is on a journey with the rest of the Invici journey into the red to find Emmy the Silver Queen to wake up their King, little do they know the King has already awaken. While there they are faced with many betrayals and they no longer know who to trust. I’m not gonna lie I was really bummed that Lucas didn’t have a bigger part in The Silver Queen as he did in The Gilded King. I love his and Julia’s relationship so much and I really missed it. However that being said I got to see more of Cam and Felix’s relationship and that made my heart so happy! I can’t wait to get my hands on the third book in the series The Blood Prince!! It releases later this year!

I opened the pages of this novel eagerly as the last novel in the series had left me wanting more. Jaffrey dove right into the story, picking up where she had left off. Once again I immersed myself in the world of the Noble vampires, and in the experience of my favourite characters. The answers to my questions were weaved expertly into the tale as the experience of the vampires and humans were described. I found myself figuratively biting my nails as I read what happens to Julia; my heart beat just a little faster as I read Cam's adventures.
The second novel in The Sovereign Series does not disappoint. I eagerly turned the pages, and I found the story difficult to put down. As I read, I could imagine the events playing in my mind. The Silver Queen is a well written and well-crafted story that deserves a place among the best of the Dystopian novels. If you have not yet given this series a try, I recommend that you do so - especially if you enjoy dystopian stories, vampires, and tales of fantasy.
Earth's last city (the Blue Zone) is contaminated so the vampire nobles are fighting over the remaining clean humans in the zone. With Cam with a few comrades in the Red Zone searching for the missing Queen, with the absence of vampire Lucas human Julia is forced to be with a new master. This convinces her that she has to escape or die. Can Cam find the Queen even with treachery from from some of his comrades, and will Julia escape her new master?
This is an explosive second instalment in the dystopian vampire trilogy. Well written, you can easily understand what is happening and at times work out what might be about to happen (although I was wrong a couple of times when I tried to do that). There are some slow moments that are a little boring and then it picks up and is full of action again, so my advice to any potential reader is stick with it as it will be worth the time investment. A great epic story that paints the world there very vividly.
I'm sure that we have all read series that we have become invested in; that we have been content with the happy ever after that the author has given us. And although we might want to read more of those characters' stories, we know that, at the end of the series, that is it.
Not so here. I deeply enjoyed the Solis Invictis series. Happiness and soul mates? Check and check. But now, this is being unpicked. And so I find myself rooting for the Emmy and Sol again. But not just them - Cam and Julia are also in there. All with their own path. Each intersecting.
You can feel the climax coming - the build up to the ultimate reveal.
Fast paced, edge of your seat stuff. I found myself turning the virtual pages more and more quickly to find out what happens next.
This is an accomplished bit of story telling.
Now bring me the conclusion .... please!
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.
Josie Jaffrey is back with the second book in her Sovereign series. We're thrown deeper into the dystopian world that Jaffrey so beautifully created. The story picks up right where The Gilded King left off, easily living up to the first book. Jaffrey's writing pulls you in and keeps you hooked. I do feel like the pace of The Silver Queen was much slower than that of The Gilded King. There were some twists here and there, especially the cliffhanger at the end. I was also a little disappointed in Emmy, considering the book is named after her we didn't get to see much of her. I cannot wait for the third book.
Josie Jaffrey has given us a great original story. I love the idea of the Nobles (vampires) being able to become healed. The fight that then ensues to save the Blue is inspired and Lucas! The tenacity of Julia on her fight to try to get the Red is really inspiring and you find yourself rooting for her to succeed!
It’s fantastic to come across characters that really make you root for them or even to root against! I’m always looking for characters that I can empathise with/for and it’s so rewarding to find them.
I can’t wait to read the third instalment as I know it’s going to be excellent!
Warnings: physical assault and violence, slavery, torture, implied sexual violence, blood and gore
Rep: One of the main characters is gay, has a queer love interest.
In the aftermath of the Blue getting invaded by the Red, Cam and the Solis Invicti head out again to find and bring Emily home, with Lucas in tow. Meanwhile, Julia is trying to survive a city overrun by Nobles in open war, and with the rise of Sol, peace comes but very topically; she now has no protection from Rufus, who revels in his violence. When getting out of the Blue becomes her only choice, she has to be brave, to fight the conditioning and realize she wants no part of being in the Blue.
This book has a lot of vampire politics in it, because the vampires back in the Blue are aiming for a coup, and Cam and the Solis Invicti are unaware of it. As they chase down the army that is to support the coup, they find that traitors abound. Now, it was also a bit confusing with so many characters (I don't know like 80% of the Solis Invicti tbh) and then the book also calls back on events from the Fall, which for a person who started the series without reading the original one meant that I'd be lost with the references. The second half raised so many questions - especially with Emily being cagey with Cam, and then there were so many timeline-related questions. I am hoping the next book will get me those answers.
Another exceptional book by Josie Jaffrey. This astonishing sequel to The Gilded King had the return of my favourite characters Cameron and Julia. Once again, this novel was filled with action, romance and suspense. I was constantly on edge throughout wondered what was going to happen. The ending left me completely shocked because it went in a direction that I was expecting but I loved it! I need the next book already.
Once again, highly gripping and the whole book was full of suspense. I truly love this series and cannot wait to see what book 3 brings - I'll definitely be picking it up! The characters are just as loveable. The settings is well explained. One of my top 5 books! Everything is explained well and clear, not at all confusing (I have been confused in the past with books with a complicated magic system and world). The storyline is one of the best I've read, I truly love it!
