Who the Hell is Ricky Bell?

Rate this book
Together they were going to raise some hell. He scowls, he's moody and he's kind of cute. When the new kid with the mysterious past arrives at school, Sammy Jones thinks he could be the ideal person to join her one-girl campaign against parents, teachers and the whole wide world. But Ricky Bell has got hidden depths and takes Sammy into an entirely new way of thinking. Thinking which leads to the truth about Ricky Bell and herself. It's why she begins to see everything in a completely new light and why she falls for the mysterious newcomer. This is a novel of redemptive love.

Ricky Bell. Ricky Ricky Ricky. What’s there to say except that he is a beautiful person. I have no idea about his looks, but I mean that he’s a beautiful person on the inside. The protagonist was deeply in love with him and fair enough, he was a breath of fresh air in this book.

The story was not at all what I expected. The cover seemed to suggest a different kind of story, but still, I was pleasantly surprised by it.

The twist was expected, but only because things can’t be happy for too long. The ending was done well in the sense that it was not rushed and had the right amount of closure. Although there was nothing left to be said for this story, the characters were well-constructed enough that I would still like a sequel.

Appearances can be deceptive… what starts out as a typical teenage romance story builds steadily into a profound and heartwarming novella daring to encompass both prejudice and loss.

When I first read this book I was so hooked I read it all in one night.
Now, reading it four years later, I have enjoyed reading it again and I appreciate more of it.
It involves the following;

Teenage romance doesn't go the obvious route, in fact, it has several twists and turns and goes to hidden depths.
Characters that aren't shallow or predictable, in fact, this book rises against that.
Romantic moments are more subtle than showy, although there are several images and parts that are very romantic that can captivate the soul.
Little pockets of wisdom and insight, with gentle humour balanced with sparky teenage angst.
It speaks of the importance of discerning the truth from the media and idle gossip, the most important relationships in your life and what young love can be.

So overall, I would say, this book to me, is about anguished but tender teenage romance, the beauty and magic of our avian friends and the frailty of life and its precious moments.
