Deborah Wilde is a global wanderer and hopeless romantic. After twelve years as a screenwriter, she was also a total cynic with a broken edit button, so, she jumped ship, started writing funny, sexy, urban fantasy and paranormal women’s fiction books, and never looked back.

She loves writing smart, flawed, wisecracking women who can solve a mystery, kick supernatural butt, banter with hot men, and still make time for their best female friend, because those were the women she grew up around and admired. Granted, her grandmother never had to kill a demon at her weekly friend lunches, but Deborah is pretty sure she could have.

she/her

Smart (ass) heroines. Epic magic. Red-hot romance.

The man on the other end of the phone spoke with such a broad Canadian prairie accent that he'd actually said "aboot". I could have smacked him for pandering to the worst American stereotypes about us. Then he added a "sorry" for good measure and hung up.

I have to admit.. this wasn't my favourite of the series. The final instalment of The Unlikeable Demon Hunter series had a lot of things to wrap up. It has been an incredible ride, and build, in this six-book journey and I honestly can't imagine the effort that Wilde put in to get this all wrapped up to satisfy not only her readers but herself.

"You two show a real lack of respect considering I could destroy you without breaking a sweat."
"We've seen you drunk and in yoga pants. It takes away the fear factor."

There are tons of great lines, some really great scenes, but maybe it was just too much? And maybe combined with being away from the world for (calculating..) over six months it was just hard to just get back into the flow with so much to tackle. Also some of the non-Nava moments (looking at you, Drio..) weren't my favourites. I definitely think I owe this series a reread, to truly appreciate this finale, but sadly I just didn't have time before now. But I will, one day, binge these babies.

"Who's acting as Satan now? Which demon's on the throne?"
"Hang on. Satan isn't a single demon? It's a title? Like the Dread Pirate Roberts?"

That being said, as it stands, I can't quite round up on this one. That might change on the second go-round but for now it's a solid middle three. But don't let that stop you from picking up book one in this series. It's been five books (plus bonuses!) of awesome, snark, swoons, angst, character growth, endless Canadian content and jokes, and the sexiest of sexy times. I have loved this series so much (as seen by all the fours and a five!) and highly recommend them. This might just be a case of 'not the right time'. But as mentioned I will reread these again, no doubt about it.

Dear lord, I was giving a demon a hand job. Again.

An electric finale to an exciting series. It was a blessing to be introduced to such a different world and such a special kick-ass heroine by the author who is one hell of a funny and inventive lady. #Rolita 😈

This series bowled me over for a week. I was totally surprised by how much I liked this series, as it's always hard to tell if a book will be great or totally suck...or just "meh" (those are very official literary terms). And there's just so many baaaad paranormal books out there.

Books 1-5 we largely dealt with Nava and then Rohan and their collective disfunction. They had all the angst and surprisingly, the unlikeable Nava was rather...not. Wilde did an excellent job of peeling back this character's layers to show us her soft underbelly. Similarly, we see her struggle (meaningfully!) with all of her relationships--seriously, not ONE relationship is left "unturned": parents (mainly her mother), Ari, Rohan, Leo, and most of all, herself. Wilde did an amazing job of fleshing out these relationships and inner struggles while keeping the plot chugging along with lots of action (of both the sexy and demon-killing variety).

Book 6, as others have noted, felt a bit scattered by comparison. Yes, Nava still had to work on some things within herself, but the Lilith storyline gave those efforts a disjointed energy, as you were never sure what part of "bad Nava" was really her, or Lilith's influence. Plot points that were built upon for books were resolved within chapters, which was deflating and a bit disappointing, most importantly the Mendalbaum stuff.

All in all, these things didn't ruin the book, but I did note I had a harder time getting through it than the other books. I had just lost motivation and there wasn't that special "sparkle" where Nava was concerned. I still highly recommend the series, because Nava and Rohan could argue about what song to listen to on the radio, and I'd still read it. They were just so great, even if in this last book a lot of that banter and hilarity was lost.

Things start out with Nava in Mandlebaum's custody, Ronan with black magic tearing him apart, and the rest of their friends held prisoner by Sienna’s witches. Almost immediately after escaping from Mandlebutt, Nava learns that she is now the target of yet another serious threat - the Devil himself. She rallies the gang and sets out to fix the world’s problems and has an interesting approach to how to accomplish that.

I liked how some of the issues Nava was facing throughout the series came together at the end. I thought it was particularly brilliant that dark magic had to be eradicated in order for them to succeed, and the witches involved in dark magic were willing to sacrifice the power for the greater good. Of course, that was to balance out the power-greedy male character of Mandelbaum who was a nut job. Girl power triumphs, yay. Nava also gets her HEA and the world is rebalanced.

So, I binged this series over the last three days, but I have to say that my frantic reading pace doesn't necessarily correlate to high levels of enjoyment.

This review is partially for this book specifically but also for the series in general. And I simply can't 100% support the romance in this series. I loved the hero and heroine's dynamic in the first book, but the level of OW drama in the second book killed off all my enjoyment. I didn't stop reading - I was too hooked on the heroine's brilliantly sarcastic personality, plus the Jewish-based world-building is fascinating - but I could never relax after that enough to truly enjoy the characters' great banter and hot sex. Which is a real shame.

The heroine, Nava, is awesome and kickass, but she does develop into a Mary Sue with some rapidity. There are unique powers coming out the wazoo with this one. She also didn't put Rohan, the hero, through the wringer enough for the all the crap he put her through in book 2. He was cracking jokes about his ex Lily right up until the last pages, and in an ordinary book I could have dealt with it, but NOT in a book where they have the history of him kissing Lily after having had sex with Nava AND pretty much demonstrating that he cared for Lily's wellbeing a lot more than Nava's! Nava never calls Rohan out on any of this, it's never discussed at all, and I get more and more irritated about this the longer I think about it.

Sort of linked to the last point: there's a lot of choppiness. Scenes change without me realising it, dialogue doesn't seem to properly match up with each other. That was exacerbated in this book, which threw in so many twists and turns that it got very confusing. To be perfectly honest, I lost the thread of the actual plot about three books ago. Which is why - even though it's so fast-paced - I found myself skimming past quite a few pages.

Series: Overall

A great beginning, horrible second book, and picks up a bit towards the middle and end. I'll be reading the author's next series, but with some wariness to see what OW drama she throws in next.

Review - Nava Katz Series

Quick Sitch: Nava Katz finds out that she's a female demon hunter, and that's a problem. Mostly because misogyny and there's never been one before and no one knows how to deal with it. The story builds as Nava comes into her own and learns that there are certain players out there actively working their way towards an apocalypse and she's got to stop it. All while falling in love with Rohan Mitra, a former rock god turned demon hunter. Romance and apocalypses go together, like peas and bicycles. Whatever, it works, just go with it.

Overview: I'm digging Deborah Wilde's writing, and while the three series that I've read (yes, three in a row because when I obsess I OBSESS), have their similarities - paranormal stories with Jewish heroines and diverse characters set in Vancouver - I do love that each has their own spin and ythe heroines are at different stages in life. Nava's the youngest and most immature but also the one who goes through it in terms of the way she's treated by every misogynist in the Brasha organizations and basically everyone thinking that she's a twit, until they learn differently. The story goes to some fantastically weird places, and it stretches the bounds, for sure, but I still enjoyed most of it. My struggle was with some of the humor (some lands, some doesn't) and

Book 1: The intro is good, kept me interested, and her Pretty Woman-esque take on sex was a thing. I appreciate that she owned her sexuality and wasn't about to be shamed. I liked it but I'm never a fan of naming genitalia. Just not my bag.

Book 2 (Sting): Dives further into actual demon hunting, introduces some key players to the overarching storyline. There's some OW/OM contact, but in the context of this series, didn't bother me and was actually that kind of emotional push/pull that surprised me because of how much I enjoyed it.

Book 3 (Need): This one introduces Malik and I wasn't mad about it at all. The danger ratchets up even more and the blurring of lines, plus some emotional payoff for the romance.

Book 4 (Crave): The one where the story starts to go off on a tangent, and it definitely felt like the need to mess with Rohan and Nava was more plot point driven than not. Feels like the overarching storyline gets bigger but the small moments could have used more time to really make you care for all these characters in a way that can impact any big conflicts that are coming up. I liked them all, but I really felt the narrowness of of that first person POV holding things back.

Book 5 (Fall): The penultimate episode in this Buffy-esque takeoff and for sure I felt that Season 6-7 fatigue at this point. It's all danger but the need to pull back kind of kills the momentum a wee bit. And that final battle? Kookydukes.

Book 6 (Burn): The finale that had ALOT of ground to cover and it felt like it. It continues that feeling of nothing but danger everywhere you turn but a lack of commitment to it that takes it down a notch. Now, I'm a romance centered reader at heart, so I didn't mind that alot of this is about pairing up the couples that you felt connecting in the background of Nava and Rohan's lives. I just wish I could have seen more of it. And the Deus Ex Machina vibe to the ultimate resolution was an "well...*blinks* alrighty then" kind of moment. I mean, look I'm all for suspension of disbelief. I LOVE the OTT moments I am right there willing to buy into what you're selling....I just wish the pitch was a little more solid.

Bottom Line: In the end I liked this, even though some of the humor didn't work for me, but I do think it's something that is more for fans of UF-PNR who prefer it a little danger but mostly safe when all is said and done.

And that's all I got.

What a lovely ending to the series.

I have binged all 6 books in about a week and I have lived the wild ride and Nava and Rohan are definitely in my top ten fictional couples list.

The final book was a little chaotic for me, but I highly recommend this series.

Move over Charley Davidson, Nava Katz is in the house and kicking demon a$$! Nava is back and fighting her greatest battle. Luckily she’s got some help from her friends. I am so in love with this series and so sad to see it go, but it went out with a bang. Or a burn! I’d give this 10 stars if I could! 5 measly stars will have to do. Fantastic as always, Ms. Wilde.

We have demons, witches, evil Rabbis and even the Dread Pirate Satan making appearances as say good-bye to Nava and the boys in this final installment.

The first time I saw the movie, The Fifth Element, my only thought was "there is just too much going on to keep track of it all." Since that first viewing, it has become one of our favorite movies to quote and now I can see how all of the on screen chaos is needed to complete the story. I say this because while I was reading this final installment of Nava Katz, I kept thinking the same thing...there is too much going on. It never stopped. Why do we need all this?

What started out as a simple story of a girl receiving a magic power that has, so far, been reserved for the all-boys club and how she had to deal with the prejudices of the old school Rabbis, is now a final story full of chaos. We have evil Rabbi Mendelbaum and his plot to be the prophecized Mashiach, which makes him just another jerkoff pretending to be about world peace as long as he is in charge of world dominance and everything is done his way. We have witches holding the Rasha hostage and trying to steal back their magic also believing they are doing the right thing in order to reinforce the veil between demons and humans. We have Rohan dealing with dark magic after being whammied by the witches in the last battle. We have Nava who is also dealing with the residual dark magic of Lilith and who is now broadcasting Lilith's magical signature making her the target to witches and demons alike. We have Satan who has decided he wants to forcibly mate with Lilith for stronger prodigy although Nava doesn't actually have Lilith's magic. And we have Nava who wants to put her frenemy Malik onto Satan's throne since Malik likes humanity and doesn't plan on wiping us out.

So much  was happening to keep track of and I know that I should have stopped and re-read the battle at the end of Book 5 just as a refresher.

There was just so much going on in this last novel, I was starting to miss the simplicity of the first novels which were just about Nava become a Rasha and her middle school does-he-love-me-like-I-love-him romance with Rohan. But, as the story began to wind down, I could start to see where all the pieces were falling and why all these different plot points were necessary to the final battle between Nava and the evil Rabbi. So, like my first viewing of The Fifth Element, as I finished Burn I needed time to absorb and digest all the many elements and how they fit into the final battle before I could sit down and write this review.

I enjoyed my time with Nava Katz, especially once we got past the high school romance drama between Nava and Rohan and got into the meat of the series.  It was an Urban Fantasy series which was derived from Jewish history and teaching and that is somewhat of a novelty in this genre.

My favorite plot point in this final story is the nod to The Princess Bride and a running joke in this novel.    It turns out Satan isn't one demon.  Whichever demon can hold the throne is given the title of Satan sort of a perverted Dread Pirate Roberts.

I am sorry to see the end of Nava Katz and the Unlikeable Demon Hunter but it was fun and it most certainly goes out with a bang.

I received this book for free from Publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.The Unlikeable Demon Hunter: Burn is the final book of the Nava Katz series by Deborah Wilde. It was highly anticipated for me as the previous book left off with a bit of a cliffhanger. That's going to make this book pretty hard to review, especially for those that have yet to read that book.

We were left with the fate of Nava, the Rasha's and the witches pretty up in the air. Burn picks up not long after and takes off like a shot. We are taken on an exciting, adrenaline filled ride for much of the book. "Bullshit, bullshit, bullshit, bliss" is the mantra for Nava. So much has happened to her that she is left with a bit of PTSD.

I was so happy with Nava's growth through this series. I felt a lot of frustration through earlier books with Nava's maturity and decision making skills. She's grown up a lot and is ready for her life to just settle into something normal. She just wants to help people. Despite my issues in previous books of the series, I'm so glad I picked this up. It was an exciting, adventure filled series and I was completely satisfied with it's ending. There is a novella after Burn that is for Leoni and I'm excited to listen to it!

Cris Dukehart narrates the Nava Katz series and does such a great job with all the accents from all over the world. I was especially pleased that Dukehart showed the difference between the accents of different parts of Canada. Cris Dukehart is one of those narrators I will actively seek out her work to listen to. I really enjoyed her narration of this series.This review was originally posted on Rantings of a Reading Addict

In the last book, Nava was caught by Rabbi Mandelbaum, the fate of Ro and other Rasha unknown, and everything felt hopeless. But our girl isn’t down for long.

The author weaves a brilliant tapestry of wit, romance, and girl power sprinkled with demons. Nava has come so far since her first PD; coming into her power, her confidence (and intestinal fortitude) despite everyone doubting her, and of course the unparalleled love story with Rohan Liam Mitra. Now, she faces her greatest “adversary” (you’ll get it once you read it) and hope she comes out on the other side with enough of herself left for a HEA.

What an ending to this story. The chips were still down and stacked against the band of Rasha-witch misfits. But despite some tough losses, close calls, and a ton of Jewish history lessons, they were able to.... hahahahaha not telling!!

One of my favorite passages of this book, that brings us back full circle to book 1, and gives a taste of the type of humor you will encounter in this story:

“Dear lord, I was giving a demon a hand job. Again. Nope. This was my all-time low. Catalina should have prepared me for this client like a good pimp. The bulb jerked in my hand and I shuddered. That’s it. Next time I had to jerk off a demon, I was getting an hourly wage. High-end escort pay, not “will blow for spare change.” Only the tip of the venom bulb remained in sunshine. Just the tip, ma’am. It throbbed in my hand, then with a convulsion, gooshed all over my arm. I strangled my hysteric laughter.”

Nava is a tough MF’er with a squishy marshmallow interior, a high sex drive and penchant for crude humor and doing the right thing. Her love for her family, friends, the truth and Rohan especially, is what makes her so bada$$. Bring on Leo and Drio!

I received an ARC of this book for my honest review.

I can't believe we are at the end of this amazing series!

What a wild ride this has been following from Deb's first book right through with Nava's journey. I thought that this book was amazing and Deb knocked it out of the park as usual. I had no idea what to expect with how everything left off in the previous book, but this book was everything I had hoped it would be.

I loved the humor/snark that is used through this book, which has also been a continuous theme throughout this series. You can't help but fall in love with Nava, Rohan and all their friends. The story and character development, along with the relationship growth that we have seen throughout this series was fantastic. Bringing everything together for such a spectacular battle and bittersweet conclusion.
It was an emotional roller-coaster for all the characters and their perspective relationships.

I'm sad to see the end of this amazing series and say good bye to these amazing characters. I highly recommend this book and series.
Thank you Deborah Wilde and I can't wait to see what's next.

Epic ending

This book kept me on the edge of my seat. I loved it.
Deborah did a brilliant job with this book, the amount of growth for these characters especially in this last book was epic, from the ashes they rise and become some of the best characters I've ever read.
I ❤❤❤❤❤ so much.
Great job, I felt like the conclusion was so well handled and although I will miss Nava and Ro dearly this book did justice to their story and left their story in an amazing place.
I highly recommend this series as a whole 🙂

Oh my goodness, what to say about this. It's a wonderful feeling to follow an author's growth from the beginning to the series to the last book of it and see it coming back better and stronger. Burn is, to be honest, the culmination of an incredible journey for the characters, the readers and the author.
It's action-packed, fast-paced and it features all of our beloved usual suspects. The author is able to tie magic, tradition and a world of intricacies in a wonderful resolution where she pulls at the threads of the story and weaves them in in a magical ending.
An in the center of this entire world stands Nava.. stronger, more powerful, still making mistakes but knowing that she is loved and treasured and that she can overcome anything life throws at her, because she's learned, she's evolved and she and Rohan have everything to look for.
A wonderful book from beginning to end and the perfect culmination of a wonderful series.

all the other thoughts under the cut include spoilers

I've put this book ON HOLD.

My Kindle Unlimited membership runs out in a few days and I've been struggling to get into this, which is strange considering I read the fifth book not long ago and love these characters.

I'll try again in a few months, start from the beginning again and see if I can get into it then (I really hope so!)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
14th April
So, I'm trying again--not from the beginning--and hopefully after a few other good urban fantasy stories, I can get into this...
And I did, sort of.
2.5 stars.
I think this book has way too much going on. We skip a lot of little extra bits that would have been explained fully in earlier books, but just get a short paragraph that paraphrases into the basic facts.
The rest of the series has been long, and let it be known I'm not a fan of books longer than 350 pages, but this one seemed to go on forever. It seemed to take an age for 1% to pass and considering we get bombarded by stuff happening, I expected it to go quicker but in my opinion it went slower.
I lost interest in parts and skipped paragraphs just wanting the major fights to play out so when that had ended at about 88% (I think) and the story carried on...well, I started to lose interest once again. The main thing I was waiting for in those last few chapters was Drio to pull his finger out and tell Leo how he felt.
Burn #6 - Do not read this book without reading the previous books! All good things must end and I really enjoyed this series. Burn picks up where Fall ends and the pace is fast and hard. All the storylines come together ending the series perfectly. Nava and Rohan having grown throughout the series, mesh well together and with all the factions in their joined fight against evil.
Nava is not the Babyslay of the second book, but a well developed woman confident in her abilities and recognized by others as a proven leader. Even Rohan keeps getting better and works perfectly for and with Nava. There's plenty of the usual and unusual characters to keep every reader's interest, along with the humor.
Ms. Wilde has done a wonderful with this series. Her talent for writing, along with her intense storytelling and vivid descriptions, topped with plenty of imagination and humor makes it difficult to put one of her books down. Leonie is one of favorite characters and I'm glad to see her story continue on from here. I contacted the author to review her books. 5*
The Unlikeable Demon Hunter: Sting #2 - Babyslay vs. psycho spawns. I missed the first book, how sad! Not reading book one did not take anything away from book two. She's an abrasive, smart mouth with an over-sex-drive, which is OK, because she can kick butt. I love the way Rohan trains her as she's fighting for her life. Ms. Wilde is a wonderful author: her colorful descriptions; the humor; a reasonable amount of vulgar language. It's true that not all real people use vl, much less curse. The action, fast pace, humorous plot along with the good descriptions holds the reader in a tight grip. After the first sex scene, the story kicked into overdrive. There's sex, but don't let that stop you from reading this entertaining book. All sex scenes boremeoutofmyeverlovingmind, I'm not a prude. Paperback. 5*
The Unlikeable Demon Hunter: Need #3- More Babyslay. More of the well written series, with the humor, the colorful descriptions and twisting plot that makes Need almost as interesting as Sting. The action and romances continue and it's hard to put the book down. The vulgar language is kept to a reasonable level and the sex scenes still boremetodeath (not just this author's, all authors). I contacted the author to review this book after reading Sting. 5*
The Unlikeable Demon Hunter: Crave #4 – Another well written, action-packed, fast-paced, intrigue filled book. This must the best so far with the well thought out plot of nonstop twists and turns and surprises that keeps the reader glued to the pages. The characters show growth and even the minor characters have enough to them to keep the reader interested. The vulgar language is actually toned down quite a bit and there’s plenty of graphic sex – skip them if GS is not your cuppa, I find all GS boring. While not a cliffhanger, there’s more coming. Ms. Wilde does an excellent job with her descriptions. 4*
The Unlikeable Demon Hunter: Fall #5 - I did have a problem with the chapters about the Pride parade. I'm not sure if I was getting a lecture or Pride forced down my throat, but I got bored quick with much of the information that didn't matter; clothing, repetition, etc. (You don't know me so don't think I dislike gays; boring is boring regardless of subject matter.) I love this series but this book didn't have the magic like the previous books did. Maybe it was too much unimportant information (or filler is the impression I sometimes received) and not the usual fast paced intrigue that this series has in bunches. The book is still good but I had to work at reading it over several days; either too wordy or sometimes I was just confused. I usually finish one of Ms. Wilde's book in one day; you can't put them down, they're so entertaining and addicting. Still, I'm looking forward to the next book. 4*
So sad this fabulous series has ended but what a wild ride it has been
Where to start? This series is one of the best that I have ever read, and I've read plenty of great series over the years. Deborah's skill at writing leaves me in awe. Her characters, her imagination, her descriptive powers, her story-telling, her ability to pull you in and not let go, all astound me. In fact, her chutzpah matches Nava's perfectly!
Nava has grown into herself over the course of the series and is finally comfortable in her own skin. She is so much more than when we first met her. After all she has experienced, she has emerged as a leader. someone that the different communities she belongs to can count upon. She is a unifying force and a whirlwind, fighting with every fibre in her being for what is right. We have been with her every step of the way and it has been gripping.
I have to say a few words about Rohan as well. He is the ultimate book boyfriend, witty, caring, sexy, thoughtful, strong, intelligent, romantic, handsome, loving, a fearsome fighter, a loyal friend, a rock for all his friends and family, not to mention a bona fide rock god, to boot. He makes Nava better, and he makes the series better by his mere presence. Everyone should have a Rohan in their life, and in their books too.
This book is everything I'd hoped for. It picks up from the cliffhanger that ended Fall and we're straight back in the action. The different factions of the Brotherhood, good and evil, and of the Witches, also good and evil, are ready to fight it out to the end - which could well be the end of everything. Throw in the Devil and the demon horde and you'll get the idea. The story advances at break-neck pace, with hardly a chance to draw breath, although I was holding my breath half the time anyway. No spoilers but the ending is just perfect.
Although the series has ended, there is a treat to come in the shape of a book starring Leo. She has been one of my favourite characters in the series, along with Drio, who I hope will feature in her book. I hope that Deborah will also treat us to books about Kane and Ari, and Ms. Clara and Bruch as well, But whatever Deborah chooses to write next, I will read it and I'm sure it will be just as amazing. Thanks for sharing your talent with us, Deborah, and please don't keep us waiting too long for more.
This is the end... Nava's last book...
At first I didn't want to start reading because, you know, it would be real, the serie would be finished :(
But after the cliffhanger we got in the last I needed to know how it would all go down and boy did it deliver!!!! (yes! I need to write so many ! because omg!) :D
I have been a fan since the first hour, devouring the books, laughing my ass off, yelling and raging at the author, crying in the middle of the night, yet this one truly is one of the best (if not the best) book of the whole series.
The usual snarkiness we know and love, the ups and down, the twists that made me facepalm because... yes, why not throw that in too... But it all fit perfectly.
I think that beside all the stuff already said, I love this series because its everyone pulling their weight. It's not always Nava saving the bloody day by herself. No, its her fellow Rasha, her friends, the witches and even a few demons who pitch in and fight the good fight.
Nava goes through the whole spectrum of emotions and it's written so good you can relate to it easily. On many occasions has she been an inspiration to me, to look at a problem and just give it the finger (kidding! well.. sort of).
The book was well written, dont think I saw any errors and yes, there was some sex described (wink wink).
Loose ends are neatly tied up, we've moved on from our usual scenery and everything is now set up for Leo to take the stage.
I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book and I beg forgiveness if this review seems a bit out of sorts, but this is pretty much how I feel after finishing the book :)
If there is one series or even one new book you want to try out this year, start this series, you wont be sorry!
Wild ride, yall!
This was a wild ride. I'm so very glad to have seen the adventures of Nava Katz and Demon Club. But it reminds me of why I don't read books with the same character development-- you get too attached. That being said...
Nava went from hot mess in the first book, to still a mess lol. I think when she went rogue in here and demanded that Rohan get therapy, she should've probably told that to herself too. We saw a lot of conclusions, but no epilogue. I want to see what happens later on in Nava's life. Does she end up having kids? Does she and Malik have their final battle? How successful is Rohan at his solo career? What about Ari and Kane, Baruch and Ms Clara? Like, details sister! I need that HEA!
The only issue I had is in this book is... Sometimes the characters would do something or be somewhere.... And then be somewhere/do something else. Like, the transitional period. It felt kind of assumed you'd know a characters actions, where they were.
I think my most favorite part in here was Nava going back into her childhood home and seeking comfort in her room. Because it really reminded me of everything Nava had happened to her from book one to then. From girl who was making a lot of bad mistakes, to a girl trying to fight for her own place in this new world, to a girl trying to be better but still needing work, to being a girl who still was a mess but loved her world and her people and would do anything to save them.
I'm so very happy for this finale (despite no epilogue). Lady Shock and Awe wins!
Still coming down from the rush of reading books 3-6 back to back over the past 4 days... I know I've said it before with the previous books, but seriously What A Ride! So much fun yet right now I'm totally drained emotionally...
I have to admit that about half way through I was very tempted to rate it 3 stars at most due to Nava's power/ego trip even though objectively I understand that it needed to part of the story it still sucked the fun and joy right out of it. Then again I found this whole book a lot harder to get through then the previous 5 books. Might have been due to all the different threads that needed wrapping up. Also, it had a lot less of those sizzling sexytimes that we'd come to love. *dirty grin*
Still, all in all it was a satisfying conclusion.
I'll definitely be re-reading this somewhere down the line and most likely check out some of the author's other work, but for now I need to catch up on some desperately needed sleep and give my poor heart some room to breathe again hehe...
I was disappointed with this book. I have read the whole series now (this was part 6, the final installation) and it was a struggle to finish. I think I enjoyed the first few books more because it had a light, fun tone, feisty female lead, lots of humour and flawed characters. But after book 3 and it was all still the same - same flaws, same graphic sex (yes, same old same old!) the only thing changing was the demons they faced and, suffering from the same issue as many a series and TV show previously, the bad guys have to get bigger and badder to provide more of a challenge. When, near the start of this book it was pronounced that Satan wanted our heroine's babies... Well I am afraid I just rolled my eyes, Nava style. You never actually believe any of the main characters will die.
I pushed through, and it was just more of the same as the previous books. Which are fine. Not too challenging, easy to skim read. Massive redeeming feature is the use of Jewish culture and mythology. It was very interesting to learn about (I googled stuff to verify as I went along!)
The final showdown was quite short, considering the build up, but it did suffer a bit from 'Lord of the rings' endings! But it's OK, we rounded it up with a nice bit of anal and a celebrity party.
Not sure I would recommend this particular installment, but book 1 was fun, so give it a go and see how far you get!
I'm going to do a blanket review for 1-6. I read them in such quick succession that it'll be hard for me to separate.
For the first few pages I wasn't sure what to think. I don't normally go in for YA books because the maturity level of the MC isn't usually my taste. This girl is a hot mess in a pretty realistic way. I was quickly sucked in to this world and read books 1 through 6 back to back in a little over a week I think.
I enjoyed the world building and the characters were realistic. The dialog was good which is very important to me. There's an element of the breaking the glass ceiling, turning the boy's club upside down zeitgeist, but it wasn't overbearing or preachy really.
I liked how the interpersonal relationships played out, but there was one part during the middle where the angst and drama was a little thick for me. I lost interest for a bit because, like I said, not a big fan of YA for just that reason.
Overall I really enjoyed these books and would recommend them to anyone who is a fan of urban fantasy.
Wow, Ms. Wilde gets dark in this last installment. Nava has grown up during all this turmoil. It has been a wild year or so for her. This is the final battle between Good versus Evil, Evil and Evil. Although the good side is also questionable with their goodness.
I enjoyed this ending and it was fitting. I liked how Nava isn't perfect and her mistakes caused real set backs for the Good side. This gives the story more depth and Nava the opportunity to learn from her mistakes. The ending comes all too fast yet takes a while to get there. All the various subplots and dangling relationships are tied up and we end up with a compromise of an ending. Throughout this series, Nava has been irreverent and tap danced to her own beat. This ending matches her to a T and I couldn't be more pleased. This is a good series to get sucked into. I lost an entire weekend but it was worth it. I recommend this series to new adult readers who enjoy snarky female leads and root for the underdog.
Let me start off by saying I typically read books with lots of action and slow burn/little sex scenes. I had a problem with the pacing of this series. As a beta reader I would point out that it would be 3+ pages of sex scenes and about a page of the final battle scene, especially once the heroine learned to (basically) teleport. She’s one place and the next paragraph she’s face to face with the big bad. And after the big battle it would be a couple of chapters wrapping up the romance angle. Not really my typical read. Overall the story was interesting. Would I read it again? ...maybe. While interesting, it didn’t evoke an emotional response in me. There wasn’t anything that really surprised me or connected with me emotionally. I didn’t feel moved to tears when a character died. But I kept reading... part of it was perspective - I’ve never read a series based on Jewish mysticism/mythology(?). Once you introduce “satan” as a character it tends to read as cheesy. Even though I liked that “satan” was a title more than one specific demon, it made me go “meh.”
She has always been a ticking time bomb and now she’s ready to explode, beware evil doers Nava Katz is coming.
With the Apocalypse fast approaching it is up to Nava to bring everyone together to stop the power-hungry Mandelbaum and his band of crazies. Witches and Rabbis must find an understanding and start working together for the world to survive even if it requires following one of Nava’s half- baked plans. But it has always been said, “Never make a deal with the devil” or demon same diff.
This has been a great conclusion to an awesome series that was beautifully written. Deborah Wilde did an amazing job of pulling us into her world and keeping us coming back for more. She provided us with some truly great characters who were not only sarcastic and humorous but also very entertaining. This magical action-packed series wasn’t just funny, but it gave us a real adventure and mystery with many great twists, an absolute joy to read and I look forward to reading more from this author.
I am really at a loss as to how to explain how awesome this book is. This book had me crying, holding my breath, laughing, freaking out and so much more. It has taken so long for Rohan and Nava to get to a good place, but the fight's not over yet. This book doesn't even give you a chance to take a breath. When you think Nava has gotten to a point where she can breathe for a minute, guess again another big bad is after her again. This time not only does she have demons after her, she also has dark witches and rogue Rasha trying to end the world as we know it. She is kidnapped, tortured, rescued and attacked by demons and that's just the first chapter. It only gets better and messier. I LOVED this series and if you like demons and/or witches you will love this series. I will miss Nava and her unique way of thinking. I requested an advanced reader copy and am under no obligation to leave this review.
And with this book, we have to say goodbye to the queen of snark :(
Nava is just all kinds of kick ass, and during the course of the series we've gotten to see just how amazing she is. Not that she is without faults, but it's the way in which Deborah Wilde handles the flaws of her characters that made this series one of my favourites.
As with the end of any series, there will be things that don't go as we'd like it to be. And while I'm pretty darn happy with how things went this was just slightly off centre from perfect for me. I'm not sure what it was. And really it doesn't matter things are still pretty darn good.
The end state for Kane is tied for best moments with the cutest couple lines in the book...okay, and maybe Ms Clara and Burach too, and cookies! Happily ever after ftw!
This book was well worth the wait. Deborah has not let me down yet, and after book 5, I had high expectations for this one. Throughout all the books Nava has grown, but has still stayed true to herself, she is still unpredictable and hilarious. One of the things that drew me to this series is how different it is from other urban fantasy, the mythology and the characters feel new and unique, not like I have read them before. This book is the conclusion I was hoping for (if the series has to end), and it also sets us up for a new character to take center stage. I would not recommend starting with this book, you should read all the books in the series in order to get the full story. I loved the book and I cannot wait to see what Deborah comes up with next. Go read it!!!
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. (seriously, go read it!!)
This review (and other bookish shenanigans) also appear on my blog, My Bookish Escapades.
This series will now forever hold a special place in my heart.
I can't believe it's done! So many unexpected things happened and the end was just... it's... I'm gonna miss this SO MUCH. Most especially, Nava's kickass and smartass self. And of course, the smexy times. THE SMEXY TIMES. Rohan now tops my ultimate book boyfriends list. My heart now belongs to this soulful, sexy, rock god. Lol. And can I just say I wouldn't mind if we get a Baruch x Clara series too? Because I think that will be all sorts of AMAZING.
This definitely deserves to be read over and over again. Looking forward to Leonie's books! (Can we get lots of Nava and Rohan cameo, please??)
This story wraps up the Nava Katz series – and it’s going out with a bang. I’m very sad to see this series end, but also very excited for this book. This book is a fitting end to the series and the author unbelievably wraps up all the loose ends without rushing or sacrificing the storyline in any way. Action packed with witty dialog and a perfect romance, this series has it all. But don’t cheat yourself and not read this series from the beginning, you really need to get to know how it all begins with these fantastic characters.
Even the supporting cast are as likeable as the main characters. I have to say, the author threw in a couple major curve balls on this, and had me gasping and furiously reading and turning pages to get where it was taking me. But the author won’t let you down – and I plan on going back and reliving in Nava’s world again one day. Reviewed by Cyrene
