“If you grew up playing D&D, Rifts, Spelljammer, or Starcraft, and want to see magic in space done right, then get ready to lose the next forty hours of your life.” — The Author’s Totally Biased Friend
By day I am an iPhone developer architecting the app used to scope Stephen Colbert’s ear. By night I am Batman. Ok maybe not. One can dream though, right?
I’ve been writing since I was six years old and started inflicting my work on others at age 18. By age 24 people stopped running away when I approached them with a new story and shortly thereafter I published my first one in the Rifter.
Wait you’re still reading?
Ok, the facts I’m supposed to list in a bio. As of this writing I’m 38 years old and live just north of the Golden Gate Bridge in the beautiful town of Mill Valley. If you’re unsure how to find it just follow the smell of self-entitlement. Once you see the teens driving Teslas you’ll know you’re in the right place.
I live in a tiny studio that I can cross in (literally) five steps and don’t own an oven. But you know what? It’s worth it. I love developing iPhone apps and if you want to work in San Francisco you accept that rent for a tiny place costs more than most people’s mortgage.
If you and about 2 million other people start buying my books I promise to move out of Marin to a house in the redwoods up in Guerneville. No pressure. Wait that’s a lie. Pressure.
Space Marines, Dragons, Demons, Spellguns and More
Disclaimer: I received a free copy of the audio book in exchange for an honest review.
Magitek Chronicles is a space marine story set in a Space Fantasy world. It has the normal military science fiction tropes but with elements welded in from fantasy. This is critical to understanding just what you are in for.
Some franchises I’ve enjoyed that do similar things include Star Wars, RWBY, Final Fantasy and Babylon 5.
If the idea of a space marine shooting a rifle that flings level 3 Void spells or a space dragon fighting capital ships fills you with delight then you are in the right place. Buckle up and enjoy the ride. All four volumes for one price is an insane value.
From the moment you are dropped into the world with an amnesiac hero, the brisk action keeps up a break neck pace to a rousing conclusion in the first book.
The second explains more of the world, mythology and develops the setting building up to another epic climax. By the third and fourth books there is better balance of action and plot development. The threats, powers and spectacle keep ratcheting up and by the end the entire scope of the war elevates to something mythic. That’s right. Books 1-4 are great but the series is still ongoing.
There are plenty of swerves, surprises, revelations, prophecies, betrayals and more to constantly keep you guessing just what will happen next.
The characterization is interesting because the main characters have no memory. We get hints of who they might have been and we learn along with them as secrets are revealed, past actions they can’t even remember catch up with them and they have to choose how much of who they were will determine who they want to be.
The tone balances levity with mind blowing magic sci fi action. The use of weapons, armor, ships, spells, potions etc gives it nearly a LitRPG feel but not in a distracting way.
The spectacle alone is enough to recommend the book. I hope the rest of the series continues to deliver on its large promise. There is plenty to enjoy in this volume. It’s quite the ride and is never plodding or slow.
The narrator did an excellent job. His voice is clear, easy to understand and helps guide you along, even while pronouncing the names of strange demons, dragons and old gods. He balances a number of accents so well he makes it look easy.
There is some strong language in the books (1-2 F bombs in each book.) The action is irrepressible but never gruesome or gory. There is no explicit sexual content. I think your average teenager would be just fine with this series and would get a big kick out of it.
The narrator was very good. He has some really great voices, good tempo and vocal inflections, and I love it when narrators vocalize the small sounds like laughter and whistles.
All four stories included in this set are very good and skillfully written.
The characters are very individual with their own quirks, and I love that the author didn't bombard me with pages of Backstory right at the start.
I have four major detractors that kept this from being a 5-star read (the first one is vastly more pronounced in book one, though it continues to be present in later books).
1, significant portions of the dialogue are simply atrocious. Listening to it, I couldn't help thinking, really? Are you serious? Especially with the way the Dragons speak.
2, length. Each book is only about 8 to 8-1/2 hours in length. Which is fine in heroic fantasy or other fantasies with relatively low stakes or scope. But with a story this expansive, I would have liked to see much longer books to really do justice to the stories. As they are written, many parts feel skipped over or rushed. Had the author spent twice the time (or even half again), the stories would have felt a lot more complete and far more immersive.
3, I just cannot suspend disbelief when I'm expected to swallow that a dragon can be a one-hit-wonder. I don't care how powerful the magic is, nothing short of a god (or a Dragonlance) should be able to kill a dragon in a single attack.
And 4, unless it's litRPG (which this book is not), then I just can't take you seriously when characters are referring to spells by level (as in, "normally he couldn't cast a third level spell"). Now, I admit that in the military the relative power of a weapon very well may be denoted by a "level" but in this context I just can't take it seriously.
All that said, I really enjoyed these books. I love the way the characters develop and the way the characterization and backstories are slowly revealed over the course of the books.
I'm definitely going to be picking up further books in this series. Hopefully book six will be released in audio soon.
Based on the reviews I don't agree with most people who read this book but I really disliked it. I have read a lot of almost every kind of sci-fi and fantasy that exists. I have read a few books that combine magic and sci-fi that were done well, and I don't agree that this was something unheard of or that Mr.Fox executed it very well. I had a lot of hope going into this since I have loved a few of the Sci-fi with magic books I have read, especially galaxy outlaws. I just felt like this one was trying to be goofy, was clumsy and not funny.
It started to lose me when early in the first book the main ground forces commander gave command to a rando they just met with a sassy attitude and supposedly no memory on a hunch that he would do ok then sent everyone into battle. I kept reading through book 2 or 3 (Audio book) hoping it would get better and it just didn't. I liked the spell armor and had high hopes that the talking weapons would be funny but it just felt like bad D&D humor that may have been funny when it was improved spur of the moment but in a written and edited book felt dumb and childish especially because they were delivered so poorly.
In the end I had to stop reading and return the book which I almost never do. It did show promise, and I really wanted to like it but I really could not. I know to each their own and I am glad so many liked this series since I feel bad that I am kinda tearing into it but I really disliked this series.
I'm not big on fantasy and this is mostly a fantasy book. I read a previous book from this author and it wasn't too bad so I decided to try a little more. The story was really spread across these 4 books and probably a couple more but I've had my curiosity satisfied. If you are interested in fantasy books then this one isn't too bad. The story is well written and the characters are developed. A couple of surprises involving the characters that I didn't see coming and there are numerous characters to keep track of so the story was entertaining .
I wasn't expecting much from a 99p quadrilogy, but this book really impressed me.
The writing style is funny, clever and well written. The story is great, constantly leaving you wanting more. The characters always felt interesting, even the 'bad guys'.
When I reach the end of a bargain like this and want to already buy the next two books, the author has definitely done something right!
I’m enjoying the series so far, though it feels a bit like an RPG being played out on the pages of a book. Some characters need more development to help the reader understand background motivations, and the universe could use a bit more fleshing out. Also, it’s a little bit repetitive and overuses terminology from gaming tropes, like “level”.
Overall a good read with a good idea. I’m interested to see where it goes from here.
Enjoyed the set but it ended abruptly without bringing the series to a conclusion. An eclectic group of characters an interesting blend of magic and technology. Could do with some better editing with some definitely odd word choices as well some grammatical errors that detracted. Guess there are other books available in the same universe. I will be looking for them.
The story is enjoyable and fun, and the writing is casual and approachable. This is also one of the few books that does multiple POVs well. He changes the eyes through which you see their world from chapter to chapter. Great mixture of magic and technology and deities. Done excellently, and makes you want to keep coming back again and again.
Chris Fox has managed to make an amazing space magic adventure into a non stop page turner with plenty of twists and excitement. The characters are compelling and their development from unknowns into integral cogs in the story is very well done. I was also impressed with the boxset being put together as this makes for a great deal and a must buy.
A tale of God's and magic that will leave you wanting more. Amazingly good in every way. Great characters with realistic situations and lots of action and adventure. A whole universe of wonderful adventures. I look forward to more from this series 😁
One of the great fantasy story weaves I have read in a long time
A lot of unsuspecting twists and changes well woven into a tail that's gripping and makes you want to turn the page and the page and the page excellently done easily one of the better fantasy series I have dug into in a long time
Where else can you get dozens of hours of entertainment for $ .99? Well written and thought out, possibly the best combination of magic and technology that I have read. Thanks, Chris! I am a fan.
Lovely, quite a read. Complex characters and their interactions has the reader wanting more and more. Wanting to figure out what the end game is. Plot within plot, masterfully done.
I thought that this was the whole series and that is the only reason why I rated 4 stars instead of 5. I thoroughly enjoyed reading these four books🙌🙌🙌🙌-applause
If you want a hellova ride reading a hellova set of books you need not look any further. Chris Fox has been in my top 5 since I first picked up one of his books and years later he hasn't disappointed me yet.
A great series . I just grabbed book 5 and if it's as good as the first 4 I can't wait to read it. Thank you Chris Fox for a tremendously entertaining series.
But, nevertheless a good book to read. The attention to make to the words the military might use slightly bumbling is annoying to one who did service in the army.
Not a bad fantasy albeit quality of language could be much better. Last book shows signs of stagnation so I wouldn't bother to read continuation of series. Maybe in next ten years or so author will refine own skills and create better plot and invest some time into development of characters until then I will eagerly await :)
First the issues, pricing at 99 pence was great however there is the 7 book collection at the same price, which is the next read. Also all 7 are available at full price! There are problems with the editing as there are repeated paragraphs in the ebook kindle version. The actual world (s) characters and stories are an excellent mix of sci fi and fantasy, well thought and executed. Am now reading the 5th book and will review whole series on completion.
