Enrolled in an Army hostel to study Law, Saba is torn between her duty towards her parents and her newfound freedom. To complicate matters, she has more suitors than she can handle. Who will she choose? The old crush? The college hotshot? Or the mysterious Lieutenant?
Some of the words that aptly describe it - funny, witty, hilarious, quirky, classy, and romantic! This book delivered everything that I can ever expect from a chick-lit. I am eagerly awaiting the screen adaptation.
And, now the proper review follows Took me a long time to write it, but what the heck!
What to expect?
Expect a funny, light-hearted, and peppy read. Expect a book that is essentially a girly read. Expect a book that is witty and full of humor. One which is cozy and classy at the same time. Finally, expect a book that provides a sneak peek into the lives of defense families.
Who can read?
The language of the book is rich, flowy, and lyrical. Keeping that in mind, I would recommend the book for intermediate and voracious readers. Beginners who are still uncomfortable with popular culture and rich language would find it a difficult read.
The story as it goes
Set in the 1990s, Combat Skirts narrates the story of a bubbly and vivacious young woman, Saba Minhas. Saba has joined a law college in Calcutta, and has also enrolled herself in an army hostel (AWWA) in the city. While she had big ideas about her newfound freedom, she is disappointed upon her arrival in the city.
Why? Well, there are three main reasons for it.
One: All around her, there are multitudes of army aunties who know her and her family and are only happy to pass on the juiciest details about her life in the city.
Two: The army hostel is a well-disguised jail. The rules are very strict and should be strictly adhered to. And in the end, they don’t leave Saba much room to exercise the so-called ‘freedom’.
Three: Saba currently has three suitors. The college hottie, the old crush, and the mysterious army lieutenant. All three confuse her to no end.
So, Saba’s life is a mess, but then whose isn’t?
How good are the characters?
Most of the characters have a charming air about them, their personas vastly differing from each other. Special attention to detail has been given to bring out their dynamic personalities and their striking qualities. For example, we aren’t just told that Kabir is an exceptionally talented crossword maker, we see its proof throughout the narrative.
One particular character whom I was swooning over throughout the book is OIC Sajni i.e., Lieutenant Adil Singh. Extraordinarily charming, witty, intellectual with the perfect combination of brain and brawn, a complete gentleman to say the least – he is so easy to fall in love with.
Saba Minhas, our female protagonist, is eccentric but cute. The title is a clever dedication to her personality and passion. Her actions would often leave you wondering, but even then, they are hilarious and adorably so.
Let’s talk about the writing style
Sahana Ahmed makes generous use of humor in her writing. And it is not just the subtle type, but also the laugh-out-loud type. The usage is clever and makes it to the list of one of the best things in the book. One example of this sagacious use of situational humor is through the way of well-timed puns. ‘Butt of course’, and ‘it was turning out to be a note-able day’ are a few specimens. On one occasion, the protagonist has this to say about herself, ‘If success was ninety-nine percent perspiration, I was a champion already.’ Even the ‘Vikram Betal’ fiasco at the dance club was a hilarious addition.
This is one visual book that runs like a movie in front of you (and should be made into a film). This book is both character and plot driven. To get even one of the two aspects right is great and here we have a beautiful combination of both. Something only a master can do. It is such an easy read that it is a welcome departure from the heavy 'good writing'. This book is light yet not frivolous. You cannot keep it down because of how each chapter ends. You simply want to know more! It is word wizardry as each and every word has its purpose. You can see the author's dedication and brilliance. Congratulations, Sahana, for a stupendous debut.
What a refreshing read! I was looking for a good girls-hostel-book for ages. And this one was as good as it can get. The book is dabbed with fauji-factor through and through, and Sahana Ahmed's writing is spectacular. She creates these visions as she writes and leaves the reader to interpret them on their own. Perhaps, too much? :) I am so glad I picked it up.
A chance interaction with the author and having followed her fun posts, I was curious about the book. I wasn't disappointed.
Just as I enjoy her Facebook posts, I loved her book as well. The tongue- in- cheek humour makes you smile.
For anyone growing up in the 90s this would take you back to your heady high school/ college days when technology was still limited to internet cafes and the hostel phone was sacred. Some of the events have been seamlessly interwoven in the narrative that makes it even more relatable (The Laxmi Mittal wedding or the war). For me it was a nostalgic dive into the carefree college life that seems like a lifetime ago. Thank you for the ride.
PS: It's available on the Juggernaut app. That's where I read it but frankly the app sucks and the cover doesn't do justice. Even the cover page on the app doesn't do justice to the book. Get the Paperback, I'd say.
I read this book in one go because it is quick paced and has enough twists and turns to make one want to read the ending! The book starts with Saba Minhas leaving home for the first time at 18 and staying at the AWWA (Army Wives Welfare Association) hostel, Calcutta. Unlike most other young women of that age who are assured and know what they want, Saba has lost her way due to a trauma in her past, and unsure about herself. Through the story, she navigates the vagaries of hostel life, quirky and sometimes downright nasty hostel hostel mates, her dreams versus her parents' expectations. There are also possible romantic options: Kabir who likes her and treats her like a gentleman; Faraaz who seems a perfect match, and Adil who is an enigma, but makes her experience that mystery called chemistry! All through the book, there are also delightful descriptions of the city of Calcutta as well as the camaraderie and its twin, competitiveness, within the army families. There's also a chase towards the end, making for a complete romantic ending. I would like to see a sequel because who doesn't like love and lovers, especially star-crossed one!
One of the last ones to finish reading Sahana’s debut novel- “Combat Skirts”…I am guilty as charged! What do I say what has not been said earlier … This is a cleverly plotted, fast paced love story. Sahana is a natural story teller and her novel transported me to my college days. She has kept tiny details in mind and you can’t help but relate to every situation and character in this novel. Being a fauji kid myself, and stayed in a hostel, this novel made me relive my college days away from home in Calcutta and I can’t thank Sahana enough for it. Sahana writing is crisp, truthful, yet amusing. Cannot wait for her next... and I promise I will finish it sooner!!!
I'm not an avid reader. I mostly pick books at random or recommended by people whose opinion I value. "Combat Skirts" caught my attention on a friend's facebook post and I decided to give it a try. From page 1, the freshness of the description, the crisp narration style had me hooked. The plot is attention-holding; you actually race with Saba, the protagonist, who flits among three young men with - thanks to the author's brilliance - an effortlessly visualizable elan of a young girl. The good old Calcutta comes alive owing to careful detailing of the famous spots viz., Fort Williams, the AWWA hostel; the "Jonga" and other 'icons' of that era lend an endearing quality to the location. A temporary glitch in the e-book had me all worked-up till a solution was found -- such is the interest the content generated. I'm truly impressed with Sahana's debut novel. Sincerely, I wish her the best and do look forward to more offerings from her.
loved the way the story was spun.....characters and moments which come to life through sahana's fresh and captivating writing. An absolute page turner, especially love the whole crossword gift idea... so romantic!!!!! Kudos to you Sahana on your debut novel... looking forward to the next one. Fresh Fun and Breezy.....
Loved it !!!! brilliantly written book. Well developed characters and plot. It's a complete entertainer. Having grown up in Gangtok this brought back a lot of memories. A very very impressive debut novel...looking forward to reading more from you .
This book is so refreshing as I felt like one of them and enjoyed every character of this book . I enjoyed a lot to read this and remember my old school/college days spend in hostel. I am waiting for your next book
I have read “Combat Skirts” page by page and finished within 1 and half day. I was excited to post my review on whatsapp/facebook. However, I restrained myself time and again because describing the book in a few lines would be gross injustice to the masterpiece you have written. Further, I was apprehensive whether I should altogether write a review of your book. First, beyond technical stuff, Dan Brown series and Anton Chekhov, I haven’t read much of literary stuff. Second, I think, I don’t possess the caliber to review the literary masterpiece – “Combat Skirts” and third I don’t have a good flair for writing. Me reviewing a book would be something similar to Saba Minhas trying to interpret the meaning of “alginate” 😊
Now that I have made my intentions and drawbacks clear, please take a while to go through the review for my take on “Combat Skirts”. Hope you would as much enjoy reading the “review” as I have writing it. Also you would know we share a common connection. “No labels, no tricks, no games” as Saba describes Adil. And pardon me for the grammatical mistakes ( I know you should not start the sentence with “And” and that someone told me early in school to pronounce “corps” in NCC as “core” 😊 )
I had an instant connection with Saba after reading the first few pages, probably because she shares the same zodiac sign; Virgo, her connection with Kolkata, Army, colonial bungalows and her disgust for mathematics 😊
“simple colonial bungalow: thick walls, pillared verandeh, raise plinth…”, reminds me of the British era Railway Bungalows at Adra where I spent my childhood.
The description of people and places ( ..the visitors’room was like any other anteroom…”) are so vivid as if the words are getting transformed into objects and characters on celluloid. Around 20 years back, in 1997-1998, when I was still in school, I met this girl jise “pyaar se log Tina bulate hain”. The protagonist, Saba Minhas, shares many of the traits with Tina. Take for instance her connection with Gangtok, Udhampur, KKHH, Sushmita Sen, Masoom. She should know that I still have the “green diary” as one of my prized possessions in which around 20 years back she scribbled her likes and dislikes. Does Saba think like Tina? Maybe, maybe not. Maybe it’s just a coincidence or “vaham” something similar to what that fortune-teller told to Saba that she might have killed a snake one fine evening.
What I have liked most about the book is the smooth transition from one page to other, from one chapter to other. Every chapter is well written without the usual fanfare of antics and word play which most authors fall trap to. The reader can instantly connect with Saba, for she has not been shown as a “demi-God”. She goes through the same turmoil, trauma, disappointments, infatuations, dilemma and low self-esteem which most of us have gone and going through every day. That’s the beauty of the character, it helps you to connect with her instantly, share her joy, sorrows, failures and accomplishments. As Khaled Hosseini describes “They say, Find a purpose in your life and live it. But, sometimes, it is only after you have lived that you recognize your life had a purpose, and likely one you never had in mind.” Saba too in her constant endeavor tries to find purpose of her life, her identity, existence and a small place for herself in the Universe.
There are times the novel reminds you of adventures of hostel life like for instance the meeting of Charu and Aman at girl’s hostel at midnight hour or the drama and confrontation with police officer at the police station. That episode shows that contrary to what her roomies believe, Saba can rise up to the occasion if situation demands so.
I don’t know what else to write or shall I say some feelings cannot be expressed in words.
First of all, congratulations to my dear friend Sahana Ahmed who has written this beautiful novel 'Combat Skirts' and has made her mark felt. For sure has she emerged an ace writer of my time. God bless her and best wishes to her for many more such successes, even greater ones than this one in future.
This book, I was able to read in 3 sittings reading about 50 pages in a go and found it extremely readable and easy to comprehend. Speaks volumes about her ability to convey an idea so lucidly.
Like the movie 'Lagaan', which I felt was intelligently made and has all the right notes in it, this story too has all the right ingredients to make it a superb plot- a love story weaved around a girl's search for something to be valued for. A beautiful sentence in it sums up, 'I gave up the need to be a good girl'. Now, I wish to see a movie made on this.
Whoever has been in Army Cantonments, lived there or lived among children of defense forces, as I did, would be so easily able to relate to the life there. The author coming from SODA (Senior Officer's Daughters Association) background definitely helped her piece together the minute observations from that side of the world, from inside of #FortWilliam, #Kolkata to be precise and when things were heating up in the Northern Sector. The year 1999.
But apart from that her ability to make all those observations so vivid through the crafty use of words for rest of the world to see is something extraordinary. What a beautiful language has she used. An amazing talent she is and then what an underlying philosophy behind all those romantic escapades of the '90s! Absolutely charming.
People my age who are children of '90s are surely going to find this a trip down the memory lane and I believe this book will liven up their own teenage and college days and will continue to do so even when they reach the age of 90. #CombatSkirts isn't going to get old for the next 100 years. Please mark my words!
Finally a big thank you for her for sending me a signed copy. I have been pestering her to write for over a decade now. My association with her since my schooldays in #KV #Gangtok, surely makes this book special to me and close to my heart. I could see where from all the characters and places mentioned here emerged. I could relate so effortlessly. This has been a great gift to me right at the start of the new year and now I plan to buy a few more copies available at #Amazon and send those as new year gifts to my younger cousins in their colleges, first to let them enjoy the book and make their days like that of the hidden talent Saba - the law student protagonist and second, to feel inspired by Sahana, to be able to write so well. Feeling proud to now have a writer friend in her.
As a reader first I would like to share my wonderful experience after reading this Novel. This Novel is not like any other novel in the Market. It is a completely different experience and believes me you would love it. The novel starts with the 'saba who is the protagonist of the story. Yes, she is the main and important character of this book. Other characters are Anika, Kabir, Adil and Faiz also play important role in this book. It is a novel from a saba point of view who tries to adjust in her army hostel life and with her family. Saba, excited about her recently amassed branches of freedom. Resolving in the army hostel, a new life, new challenges also a new journey of university life, new friendships. What happens next grab your copy now and read it. To more about this book 📚 .
The narrative hit me hard from the very first line. I liked the spirit of saba, who kept a positive attitude even in hopeless and traumatising situations. I also liked the fact that the author has given multiple points of views in this book. Although the book is written for young readers, I feel that it has a universal appeal. I laughed and I cried while reading this book. There are wonderful lessons about friendship and kindness which everyone should remember and apply in their life. Combat Skirts is a wonderful book that will touch your heart and soul. I quite loved this book to the core. Overall Excellent book. It will keep you glued till the very end. You'll be left wanting more by the time you finish this. Language can be a bit tricky, nothing a dictionary app cannot fix. The acrid language, piercing detail and vivid picturization make this a worthwhile read. I'll probably read it, again and again, many times just for the pure joy of reading - there is something of the nice and pleasant flow of her language.
Now i talk about the page quality of the book and its printing - very nice. The font used is Sabon instead of something ghastly like easy for reading. Text size is quite comfortable. Paper quality is nice and has a smooth texture to it, although people accustomed to the bright off-white pages might be a bit disappointed at the not so bright pages.
This book has my heart. I started reading this book one week ago and I found this book unputdowable because this book will make you laugh and will keep you entertained till the end. The story talks about the life story of the protagonist Saba who is enrolled in an Army hostel to study Law. The story focuses on Saba and her choices. Saba is torn between her duty towards her parents and her newfound freedom. To complicate matters, she has more suitors than she can handle. Who will she choose? The old crush? The college hotshot? Or the mysterious Lieutenant?
I really liked the character of protagonist Saba because she really showed up as a great personality. The story share about her experiences which are really good to read. The college life, the fun and everything related to college days will make up smile and you will find yourself lost in your college days. The conversation over boys and the usual hostel fights over boys is just so funny and relatable. I can relate to so many things which are described here about the girls hostel life. There are so many other characters too in the story like Anika, Kabir, Adil and Faiz and they all really played their best roles to make the story more entertaining.
Overall, the plot is satisfactory and engaging. I love how hilarious this book turns out! It will work as a stress buster because the smile on your face while reading this book will continue throughout the story. This book makes you laugh and forget what's going on around you, you will forget your life problems and get lost in this happy world. The characters are well described and looks so real. This book will make you remember your college days, your first crush and your college life. Highly recommended to everyone!
Book: Combat skirts Author: Sahana Ahmed Rating: 4.9/5
My Take: Combat Skirts is an atypical books set in the late 90s in Calcutta. This is Saba's story, when saba enrolled in an Army hostel to study Law, she was torn between her duty towards her parents and her newfound freedom. To complicate matters, she has more suitors than she can handle. ______ What made me buy this book is the extraordinary cover of Combat Skirts it clearly represents the entire story undoubtedly. It's like a little preview. A book cover is the book’s billboard, and even without the reader or author knowing, it causes expectation and the book stood strong on my expectations. Not only the cover the plot of this book is extremely exquisite and realistic. I love how this story turned out my mind was just asking for more and more, I might read this book again. The scene setups are so detailed that they are shockingly faultless this story has so much depth, I don't know if it is just me who sees it or other people are also noticing it. The protagonist's character buildup is done keenly Saba is like The Girl next door who is full of life, her eyes are full of passion, a kind hearted and has an attractive persona. I personally love her because her life was full of chaos and despite of all the predicaments I found her amusing clever and capable character is hopeful above all. ______ More than anything I loved how Saba dealt with the whole confusion and yet not let her work get affected by it is commendable and so inspiring. Combat Skirts is sometimes comical, sometimes heart wrenching and an always exciting novel. Her story is quick and exciting, a story i would strongly recommend you to read.
This book is about Saba Minhas, an army brat. It is set in the time frame of late nineties. The story begins when she has decided to enter an army girls' hostel . Her first day, introductions, washing clothes for seniors in return of a help, about the different girls found in a hostel, the stylish one, the bully one, the calm one to the drug addict one. She has all of them in her hostel. She is new to the city and has some acquaintance families in the city, but she prefers not to be too close to them. There is hostel fun, ramp shows, birthday parties, motherly warden, sneaking boys inside hostel and what not! The main character Saba has a sprinkle of army brat, sprinkle of humour, and sprinkle of charm which she goes about throwing on every boy she meets. She gets multiple coffee offers by boys of her college and the special Adil Singh. Loved reading the book, a different story than the usual ones and the title and cover are also unique in their own way. There's only one thing I thought could be improved was, at some places the author forgot to give reference of the event and it seemed discontinued. But this was at very very few places, and storyline and all the fun and tale of an army brat makes up for it. If you are looking for a light read, definitely go for it!
Combat Skirt, the first thing that appealed to me to read this book was its title. I felt it's unusual to see a book on a shelf with a strange title and was keen to learn more about it. When I started reading this, it was so interesting and fun to read. I fell in love with Sahana’s writing style. Her words are so fresh and her narrative is so relatable. The story revolved around the main protagonist Saba who is excited to get into the army hostel starting with her new life. The story is set in the late nineties which were the beginning of the internet era where emails are not new anymore, and letters have become old. This made me feel nostalgic to read and brought in several instances of my old memory back in a flash.
The story induces different essence of human emotions, friendship, love and self-confidence into the life of Saba. I appreciate the author’s efforts to bringing in such an intriguing story which where some part of the story is comical and at the same time it is also heart-wrenching. The language is simple and easy to understand. The cover pic is designed very creatively and the title and book cover blends well with the story. I am so much impressed with Sahana’s debut novel. It was a short quick read and gripping novel. I would honestly rate this book with 4 out of 5 stars and look forward to Sahana bringing in more such works like this.
Having spent all my graduation years in hostel, I usually look forward to things that can help me recall those memorable days. Though girls and boys differ considerably in the way they deal with their mates in general but the common issues like back bitching or fighting over trivial matter or finding creative ways to keep the entertainment quotient high are some of the things experienced by both genders during their stint at hostel and this book beautifully captures that very essence.
The story encapsulates variety of themes ranging from romance with a pinch of humor added on the backdrop of vagaries of army families. In a hilarious manner, it puts across the problems faced by a teenager and how today's generation finds it really tough to make a decision and more importantly stick to it mainly due to myriad of options available at their disposal.
There are not many novels which are both plot and character driven and this certainly stands out on that front. The narration is impeccable and every reader can feel everything happening in front of his own eyes as author has incorporated a very visual way of writing. The tale makes you nostalgic and yearning for more once one reaches the fag end.
Certainly a feel good read which can be given a try.

*********
Reading this book was like watching a rom-com movie. It was cute, sweet and warmed my heart.
Saba has been dreaming of leaving her family for a very long time. Her parents were toxic and harsh to her. When she finally leaves her home and enrols in an army hostel to study law, her life changes forever. The newly found liberty is like a breath of fresh air to her. But what happens when she's torn to choose between 3 different suitors? Whom should she choose? Her old crush? The college hero? Or the hot lieutenant? She has to make a decision. Which one should it be? What awaits her in the future? Will she make the right choice? Grab a copy soon to find the answers.
The writing style was awesome. It made reading the book like watching a movie. It was well described and explained. I loved how perfectly the main character was developed. She had a certain charm to her. The love triangle trope was subtle yet enough. I'm glad it wasn't exaggerated much. The language was modest and fair.
If you enjoy a good romantic book here and there, this book is perfect for you. It is fast-paced and entertaining.
Combat Skirts is a smart and sassy romance with dollops of army humour. Set in AWWA hostel Calcutta this rom-com is as clever as it's funny. We meet Adil (him of the lush eyelashes , chiseled cheekbones and a cool voice ) ,Faraz (the heart breaker from Mayo) and my favourite, Kabir , in quick succession and are left wondering which of these dishy young men will the heroine end up with. But before that our girl who is a little lost and cofused has to find herself. And who better to help her in this mission than her mates in the hostel. The girls are a hoot , each one a character so familiar it's like you have met them all . As are the uncles and aunties. Drawn with a sharp , but never malicious, pen the colonels and their wives are people you almost know . The fauji references are nostalgic Dulhabari crystals ( that infamous little town) 'That rare fauji lady who understood restraint ( hahaha! Brilliant observation Sahana! !) Hierarchy of the hors d'oerves (of course ) And the twists in the tale that finally lead to a very satisfactory ending . A lovely debut and just what the doctor ordered after all the heavy duty reading I have been doing lately.
I love the shadings that are utilized on the cover and when I read the snippet I was completely energized it appears as though an account of a renegade and I was totally interested to find out with regards to Saba our main protagonist.
The book was promising and after so long I was perusing a chick book and yet not cheesy. The book shipped me back to my college days. It's a pleasant interpretation of teen school life particularly hostel life and furthermore a slip top into the existences of lives of Defence Army. Every one of the characters and the plots are so elegantly composed by the author that they all keep you snared on to each page. I love the psychological prattling that Saba has with her self it makes her character more genuine and fun. I cherished the writing way it was straightforward and fun.
I read the book in one go in light of the fact that it's very paced and a simple go ride. It was a very invigorating book and I would recommend this book to even voracious readers as it's a decent breather and gives you an adrenaline rush towards the end with its twist and turns.
Combat Skirts by Sahana Ahmed is a tongue in cheek romance that leaves you wanting for more. The protagonist Saba Minhas, an army daughter and a hard core vegetarian, spurns out Pig Latin with elan and she is not the only one who delights. For readers who have had a taste of hostel life and even those like me who haven’t, the book has so much to offer; take hostel ghost stories, dope-heads, friendships and secrets, lover trysts, crank callers and the hierarchy that is so ingrained in hostel living. Ahmed takes her sentences seriously; each one of them reflecting the milieu. Her dialogues are crisp and funny: “I was so angry I thought I would lose my syntax!” The biggest takeaway from this read is the judicious use of anagrams, riddles and crossword puzzles – the perfect accompaniment to a love story. The only shortcoming of the book was that it ended too soon! Looking forward to more from India’s own Jane Austen.
They called themselves bonkers, they shared their combat/camo/flouncy/skater/maxi skirts , they spoke piglatin, called boys secretly to their rooms late at night, they were obsessed with sun signs, they made fun, giggled, entertained each other, shared dirty secrets and what not. That was a hostel fun, I wish I could experience in my life for once but author Sahana Ahmed made me experience it through the voice of Saba.
I enjoyed the entire story, there is a mix of drama, romance, crush, friendship, stories, boys, boyfriend, family, hook-ups, train journey, sister emotions, college, first day of college, army kids and parents... there is so much in one story.
All I can say about this book is that it’s beautiful, well narrated and splendid! I hope it catches the cynosure of a famous film director. Good work author Sahana Ahmed for your beautiful real narration. I loved it till the end.
“But she wasn’t joking when she made me wear my combat skirt. ‘It’s so awesome!’ She also insisted on painting my face. I blotted my lipstick when she wasn’t looking. “
It’s a story of Saba, a law student staying in an army girls hostel, it’s about her getting along with her hostel mates, the time she spends with them, the life lessons she learnt from them, sharing clothes and daily stories.. then there is a law school story with Kabir and Nimai, a secret love and admiration for Lt. Adil Singh, old time friend Faraaz Mirza and as the story moves some more characters add to it. There is so much in this story that cannot be just summarised in few words.
I just loved the plot and the way it is narrated as it seems so close to real. The characters are so full of life and peppy. Language is fresh and lucid. Author Sahana Ahmed has done a commendable job in scripting it. I definitely recommend it to all the readers.
I raced through the book and my 1st reaction was 'wow - I could have also written this' but then when I cooled down I knew that the author while writing would have really grappled with complex themes and taken a call to write this in such a lucid and page turning manner.
Once I finished the next questions was when will this book be made into a movie? Who would be cast? Next was when will the sequel come out? All characters were very interestingly poised and it would be an injustice if the sequel was not penned.
Read it for understanding the army's world and its peculiarities and the how army's young adults [or even just young adults] deals with life impacting situations. While signing off 'I await the sequel' Combat Skirts
Sahana Ahmed im still waiting for the sequel of combat skirts.. For those who have not read it.. the book has quiet a realistic side to it.. it will definitely take you back into the youth.. it's refreshing.. light and a very warm read. For those especially from the forces will connect more.. I'd say perfect for a short weekend getaway.. or over the weekend trying to escape the chill feeling comft in bed with ur tea.. coffee or beverage.. We all read n rave about the popular authors with a serious writing.. or something too long n engaging.. n it's one thing i loved about combat skirts.. it's crisp n short.. My words can describe the book or what it is about even closely.. read to feel it...
Let me preface this with an apology because this was long due. Three-quarters of the way through Sahana Ahmed's debut novel, i had to take a moment to pen this down. Oh My God! What a fantastic debut you made!!! The characters are so relatable that I got to relive all those memories from college days through your lucid writing. It completely blew my mind and managed to surpass my high expectations because i have zero attention span when it comes to reading. I have never been a voracious reader but i was glued to your book and it kept me engaged till the very end. Somehow you have always managed to set a very high bar for yourself. The day is not far when you will be the "Next Big Female Novelist" So proud of you my friend~ more power to you gurl!
What a promising debut from Sahana Ahmed! And yet in so many ways, you can't say it's her first book, because she writes like an accomplished author who knows her strengths.
The book is highly satisfying and was pretty much unputdownable to me. Sahana's characters are well fleshed out and so relatable. The subtle romance, especially during the train journey, was so nostalgic and precisely that's why, so refreshing for me. I can already see a Hindi film being made on it. It has all the ingredients for a highly watchable movie. The book is just the perfect start for Sahana, who is destined for greater literary successes.

Combat Skirts is a great read, Sahana effortlessly combines the chiklit, romance, drama and a coming of age story. The book is potpourri of themes and it also brings to life the struggles of a young woman who is trying to find herself. The characters are quirky and very very very relatable (😉), another thing that stands out for me in the book is how Sahana has tackled various social issues as well with ease. The book does everything for me, it takes me back to my hostel days, my growing up days as an army brat and of course takes me to one of my favourite city Calcutta. I am eagerly looking forward to the next Sahana.
Combat Skirts authored by Sahana Ahmed is an unputdownable book. The book starts with intrigue and finishes with aplomb, a total of 177 pages. I completed reading in flat 4 hours. Language is good and fluent. I could paint a clear mental picture of every episode that has been interwoven in a logical manner. Hats off to Sana's mother who has been depicted as a typical Indian mother. Also big thanks to Sana for showing us faujis in good light. The best sentence for me is on page 156, "Thanks, and I'm Sikh Regiment girl. I am language proof". I am looking forward for more such books from this Sikh Regiment girl, now a matured lady. Thanks. 🙏🙏🌹🌹🙏🙏
