In this book Sydney Srinivas presents a comprehensive account of the life and times of Einstein, perhaps the greatest intellectual of all times, and traces the various influences that shaped him and his scientific temper.
The biography, rather than being a mere chronological compilation of the highlights of Einstein's life, lucidly interweaves the socio-cultural and political ethos of his times. It delineates the greatness of Einstein as a path breaking physicist and his all consuming passion for physics, which did take a toll on his family life.
The transition from a scientist to a social and political activist comes alive, depicting him as a human being with a strong moral fibre who stood for justice at all times. Nevertheless, the author doesn't deter from touching upon the frailties and weaknesses of Einstein.
The inclusion of several interesting anecdotes from his life add colour to the narrative and the scientific theories formulated are also explained in simple style, devoid of complex jargon, making the book an ideal read.
The book begins on an adulatory note, almost matching the energy of a young audience who know of his mythology and have sought to learn more about his life and science. Despite being a quick read, the author has done laudably in capturing all the signal triumphs in Einstein's life while keeping him accountable for his self-centered decisions and flawed sensibilities.
This is a must-read for middle-school and high-school students as a way to explore science and history beyond their textbooks and as an introduction to reading non-fiction. The images complement the text very well and provide the much needed hook for new readers to hold on to, helping them read with fewer breaks. The author has not only detailed Einstein’s life but also summarised his research: from determining the size of molecules to general relativity, in a manner that is easy and accessible to all.
While not exhaustive, the book does what it set out to accomplish. The author provides a bibliography that the intrepid reader can browse and continue reading about his life with greater resolution and context. I'm definitely looking forward to collecting and reading the other books written by the author.
