Margriet de Moor
34 books30 followersMargriet de Moor was born in Noordwijk, the Netherlands, in 1941. She comes from a Catholic family with many children and grew up with nine siblings, six of them girls. The theme of sisterhood was to become a common theme in her work. She studied Piano and Song at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, and was especially interested in the music of avant-garde composers such as Schönberg, Satie and Debussy. She began to appear regularly on stage as a solo singer from 1968 onwards. Ten years later she resumed her studies again, this time in Art History and Archaeology at the University of Amsterdam.
Following her marriage to the sculptor Heppe de Moor she founded an art salon in 's-Graveland, near Amsterdam, in 1984. She made films and video portraits of the artists involved in the salon. One year later she began to write prose, which from the outset displayed a complex structure and atmospheric density. In 1988 de Moor's first volume of short stories appeared, »Op de rug gezien« (t: Back views), which was awarded the Gouden Ezelsoor for best selling first work. She achieved international recognition with her first novel, »Eerst grijs dan wit dan blauw« (1991; Eng. »First Grey, then White, then Blue«, 1994), which has been translated into eleven languages to date. The murder of a young woman, who disappeared years ago, is reconstructed from the perspectives of three different people.
Her musical preferences have always been modern, as is also true of de Moor's literary tastes, which include avant-garde stylists such as Beckett, Borges and Ionesco. »My creative thought is wrought from musical forms, yet I will never try to translate a specific musical form directly into literature.« In her work she is often preoccupied – against the backdrop of historical events and epochs – with the fateful powers which rail against human strivings to control life. Thus music and love are recurring themes. »De Virtuoos« (1993; Eng. »The Virtuoso«, 1996) concerns a woman's love for a castrato in 18th Century Naples. »Hertog van Egypte« (1996; Eng. »The Duke of Egypt«, 2001), similarly, describes the love story of an unusual couple, in this case between a gypsy and a female farmer, who get married in the sixties.

The destiny of two sisters with similar looks is played out, as they switch roles on the day of the catastrophe itself. Thus one sister dies at the place where the other sister was meant to be.
De Moor has been awarded many prizes, including the Lucy B. en C.W. van der Hoogtprijs and the Ako Literature Prize. She lives in Amsterdam.

This book was recommended to me by a music-lover friend. It is also mentioned in the 2019 Salzburg Whitsun Festival Notes as part of this year's program which is dedicated to the music of the castrati. The author is a musician herself, explaining the best part of this novel--which is the glorious and evocative descriptions of the long-lost voices.
This novel tells the story of a famous singer. I think the plot went along the lines of what ordinarily happened in this case. Muically gifted Garparo was born into terrible poverty and willingly and underwent the castration process when he was on the older side--nearly at puberty. There was a scene of the child seeing small shoes in the "clinic," where he was castrated and knowing they must be for him. His first shoes. After, he was immediately whisked off to the conservatory and trained for countless hours to become the most famous singer in Naples. Toast of Rome and London.
The book is really about the passion that an aristocratic woman feels for Gasparo and their love affair.
Illuminating a world I can hardly imagine, in the days when people --born high and low-- were crazy for opera. Aristocrats, like the heroine of the novel would attend the Theater of San Carlo several times a week in their boxes, where people gambled and ate meals; played games, held long conversations about philosophy, conducted love affairs --and sometimes even faced the stage to watch the performances! This was the day before Mahler insisted that audiences must sit quietly and watch.
How do you even evoke the world of these long-gone sounds? Today counter-tenors give us a taste of their world, but in fact, their voices (the timbre and the power) is not something we can really even imagine.

Ich bin froh, dass ich mit diesem Buch endlich durch bin, obwohl es so schmal ist.
Ich weiß nicht, ob ich dieses Buch nicht verstanden habe und mir etwas entgangen ist, aber mich hat es zu 80% nur gelangweilt. Stellenweise habe ich es nur überflogen, schließlich passiert 180 Seiten eigentlich immer das Gleiche: Opernbesuche, Sex, Opernbesuche, Sex.
Die Sprache hat zwar irgendwo ihren eigenen Reiz, wirkt aber irgendwie diffus und verwirrt, zumal die Szenen sowieso so schnell wechseln, dass man kaum hinterherkommt.
Immerhin wurde die Atmosphäre Italiens im 17./18. Jahrhundert gut eingefangen, was ja schon mal die halbe Miete für einen historischen Roman ist. Auch die Einzelheiten der Musikbeschreibungen wirken auf einen Laien wie mich sehr authentisch, eher sogar überfordernd, da ich mich mit Opernmusik überhaupt nicht auskenne, und es mich offen gesagt auch nicht interessiert. Von daher fand ich die detaillierten Beschreibungen von Musikstücken eher störend, vor allen Dingen, weil sie sich ständig wiederholt haben.
Insgesamt kein Lesegenuss für mich. Das Thema Lieb zu einem Eunuchen hat mich zwar interessiert, wurde dann aber viel zu sehr von musikalischer Beschreibung und kitschigem Anschmachten der Protagonistin überlagert. Im Übrigen finde ich, dass ihr geliebter Eunuch, Gasparo, ein richtiges Ekelpaket ist, dass ich oft gerne in den Orchestergraben geschubst hätte.
Obwohl die Autorin hochgelobt wird, werde ich ihr wohl eher keine 2. Chance geben.

Een wonderlijk boek, de Virtuoos. En al wat ouder, uit 1994. De Virtuoos gaat over een liefdesgeschiedenis tussen Carlotta, Gravin van Rocca d'Evandro en castraatzanger Gasparo Conti. Carlotta is verliefd op Gasparo sinds ze hem voor het eerst zag zingen in het dorp waar ze geboren is. Op een dag verdwijnt hij, en er wordt gefluisterd dat vanwege zijn uitzonderlijke stem hij geopereerd is in Norcia. Carlotta, dochter van een edelman die zijn (en haar) fortuin heeft verkwanseld met gokken en drinken, verlaat zelf het dorp als ze door de graaf van Rocca d'Evandro ten huwelijk wordt gevraagd. Het is een verstandshuwelijk. De graaf valt meer op jongens. Carlotta verlaat haar dorp Croce del Carmine en denkt niet meer aan Gasparo.
Totdat haar man Bertho haar toestaat om een seizoen in Napels mee te maken. De adel in Napels gaat elke avond naar de opera en luistert uren achter elkaar, onderwijl pratend, etend en drinkend. Carlotta ziet daar de inmiddels bejubelde Gasparo. Ze is uitzinnig verliefd en rust niet tot ze hem in haar bed heeft. Gasparo ondergaat de verovering.
Het verhaal heeft een prettige cadans, vol sierlijke zinnen, geschreven als een muziekstuk met een voorspel, intermezzo en finale. Het grootste deel van het boek is geschreven vanuit Carlotta en heeft de vage, dweperige sfeer van een verliefde tiener, waarbij alles moet wijken voor de liefde en ze blind is voor wat het onderwerp van haar liefde er eigenlijk zelf van vindt. Gasparo Conti is de virtuoos uit de titel. Als hij zingt, dan valt de wereld stil. Niemand zingt als hij. Daarnaast is hij als castraat ook fysek anders dan anders: geen hoekige man, maar een man met ronde schouders en kaken, een hele witte huid en rijzige gestalte, zonder baardgroei of andere beharing. Zo anders, dat iedereen verliefd op hem wordt. Gasparo lijkt dan ook niet verliefd op Carlotta. Ze amuseert hem en hij vindt al haar aandacht heerlijk, voor één seizoen.
Dat is gelijk ook de zwakte van het boek: geen van de karakters heeft het diepgang. Carlotta is wat ongeloofwaardig als 15-jarige die een wandelende muziekencylopedie is, met verwijzingen naar allehande filosofen. Nergens gaat het verhaal echt de diepte in. Gasparo houdt vooral ellenlange saaie monologen over zangtechniek, die voor een leek niet te volgen zijn. Naarmate het verhaal vordert, vraag je je als lezer af wat Carlotta in hem ziet, behalve de puur fysieke aantrekkingskracht.
En misschien is dat ook wel waar dit boek over gaat: de eerste en enige liefde van een meisje van 15, dat haar haar hele leven bijblijft. Een verhaal vol passie en met maar één focus: die van Carlotta op Gasparo. Een liefde van één seizoen...

Eine andere Rezension beschwert sich, dass es in diesem Buch nur um Oper und Sex geht. Das stimmt, und deswegen liebe ich es. Margriet de Moor schreibt so liebevoll und eindrücklich über den Gesang des Kastraten Gasparo Conti, wie es nur eine Sängerin kann. Ich habe mich wirklich ins Neapel des 18. Jahrhunderts versetzt gefühlt. Einzige Kritik: Leider hat die Übersetzerin keine Ahnung von Musik und nennt das b konsequent „bes“.

De Virtuoos is een typisch Nederlands boek, waarin je de hoofdpersoon alleen van de buitenkant leert kennen, in veel - in dit geval muziek- en Napelsgerelateerde - bewoordingen en weinig wol

This book is great if you have a lot of knowledge about classical music and operas. I did not and found the story difficult to understand at times as it can get quite theoretical. It's not very clear at all times from which person the story is being told.
It switches between the main character watching her lover perform at the opera and the main character between the sheets with her lover afterwards. This is basically the entire storyline and can get a bit dull. Although the romantic scenes were quite exciting, for me, it was spoiled by them conversing endlessly about the opera in the heat of the moment. Conclusion: It's not a book for me, but I still enjoyed reading this short novel.

I knocked this out in an hour and a half. It was enjoyable, about a castrato in 16th or 17th Century Naples and the countess who loves him, but it was a little weird. Very...reflective. But it does give an interesting perspective of life in that culture.

Ich weiß nichts über Opernmusik und über leidenschaftliche Liebe auch nicht wirklich, aber irgendwas an dem Buch hat mich nicht losgelassen (vllt weil ich eigentlich was anderes machen müsste). Es ist ungezwungen, voller Emotionen, aber doch unfassbar simpel. Normalerweise kann ich mir Bücher nicht geben, die im 18 Jahrhundert spielen sollen, aber dieses war irgendwie okay. Möglicherweise weil es in Neapel spielt oder weil der Schwerpunkt auf der Musik und Carlottas Obsession mit Gasparo liegt. Vielleicht auch weil das Ende von Anfang an irgendwie klar ist. Vielleicht weil Carlotta als Hauptfigur nicht dumm ist und die Personen um sie herum sie aufrichtig lieben. Vielleicht auch, weil es so weit entfernt ist von meiner Lebensrealität, dass ich während des Lesens einfach nicht mehr sein muss, als stumme Beobachterin in einer anderen Welt.

Onder verwachting. Wat muziek met je kan doen is goed uitgelegd. Er zijn ook een aantal ontwenningstechnieken gebruikt zoals een mannelijke sopraan of buitenechtelijke liefde wat geen conflict oplevert met de echtgenoot. Helaas mis ik de echte diepgang in het verhaal of een soort conclusie. Misschien had ik een ingewikkelder boek verwacht en viel het daarom tegen, want ik werd wel meegesleept in het rumoerige leven in Napels. Ik miste een conflict, mentaal of fysiek, waardoor het vooral een beschrijving werd van hun perfecte liefde.

Die Protagonisten ist mir unsympathisch. Der Schreibstil ist sehr romantisch und mehrere Situationen/Gefühle wurden in Worte gefasst, wie ich es vorher noch nicht gelesen habe. Vor allem die Begierde.
Intensive Sexszenen und viel zu viel technisches Gerede über Gesang, leider nicht mein Gebiet und wenn man sich nicht gut auskennt, wird man nicht durchblicken.

Mooi en intrigerend verhaal over het fenomeen van de musico's of castraten in de 17de/18de eeuw. Geschreven in erg wollige taal, waardoor ik het verhaal niet altijd zo goed kon volgen. Wel een sublieme sfeertekening, maar niet zoveel plot.

Lust and music are intertwined in this beautiful translation. Non musicians who don’t know the difference between an inverted mordent and descending acciacaturas might have problems with the technical descriptions of vocalisation. Don’t worry, the rest of the plot is also unfathomable at times.

Intensely reflective, sensual prose. Rather different from anything I've read recently; this is a little hard to categorise or organise my feelings about. I mostly enjoyed just taking in the protagonist's sensuous (often joyfully horny) narration, though there were some moments of rather abstracted writing that were somewhat hard to follow (maybe an artefact of translation from the Dutch?).
The passages relating to the experience of hearing music were quite wonderful, those of the castrato character discussing musical technique and theory were rather less moving (perhaps a little annoying even), but I could be convinced that this contrast was intentional. I was also a little puzzled by the sequence of time in the book - I'm unsure, for example, whether the events of the Intermezzo come before or after the ending - and by the rather abrupt departure of the husband Berto.
Whatever flaws it may have, however, I undeniably enjoyed spending time in this rich and unusual novel.

I didn't like this book. I think the writer could've gotten more out of the book than what she really did. I'm sure there must be more to a story then just what happens between the sheets? Sure, there were some other things that happened, but not too much.. The intermezzo which predicted the end was very annoying as well.
