I think we should break up.

Those six little words mean the summer after high school is not starting off the way Sadie Wills had planned. When her boyfriend of three years dumps her the day after graduation, she’s suddenly unsure of what the future will hold.

Serving up ice cream at Gigi’s Dairy Bar in downtown Abbyville proves to be a nice distraction. That is, until she finds out the old house across the street, which used to be the town’s flower shop, is being torn down to put up an ice cream franchise. Convinced the new store will put Gigi’s out of business, Sadie comes up with a plan. Her newfound summer resolution? Save that house and save Gigi’s.

Complications arise when she meets Eric and serious sparks start flying. The problem? Eric’s dad owns the company responsible for demolishing the old flower shop, and Eric is working for him over the summer. Even though she tells herself not to fall for him – he’s going to help run Gigi’s out of business after all, and besides, it’s too soon after her break-up to even think about giving her heart to someone else – Eric has other plans.

Torn by the arguments between her head and her heart, Sadie becomes very good at running over the summer. Running from her past. Running from her feelings. Running from love.

As the summer wears on, Eric slowly slips more and more into her life, and Sadie eventually realizes that she can’t run forever. But can she risk giving her heart to someone else?

The Other Side is a clean contemporary YA romance for readers who like sweet, swoony heroes and happily ever afters.

· “It’s okay to be alone, to not be with someone. What I really should be scared of is being with the wrong person.” ·

*I got an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review*

This book has the cutest cover possible and the plot line sounded so great that I didn’t think twice before requesting and ARC. And even thouhgh it was a very sweet read, at times I found it hard to relate to Saddie or to be on her shoes (entirely because of my personality). That is until the very end which, I must add, was very badass and made me very proud.

But let’s take a few steps back. After being dumped by the jerk (I’m sorry, but there’s just no better word for guys like Paul) she dated for the past three years, Sadie’s obviously feeling anger, vulnerable, and scared of letting anyone new close. But then, she meets Eric, the sweetest boy ever and her heart lets her know it’s still pretty much alive and willing to love someone like him.

Only . . . Eric turns to be the son of the man who’s working to tear down an historical building in town to open up another ice-cream shop—one that’ll no doubt leave her beloved Gigi’s out of business. So now Sadie’s got an important decition to make—save the building and Gigi’s or take a chance on Eric.

Some of the things I enjoyed the most about this book were the morals of the story. After all, Sadie’s forced to look back on her relationship only to find out what love isn’t supposed to do, but it’ll take a lot of courage for her to be willing to discover how amazing it can be. With the right person, of course.

I also loved the setting, Maddison’s character, the family dynamics, and the title (it makes for a great metaphor when reaching the end).

In spite of that, I couldn’t being myself to root for Sadie when she starts weighting the possibility of giving up the fight for what she believes in (a.k.a., saving the historical building) because she’s afraid to lose Eric (who, let’s face it, is very cute, but she barely knows him at that point). On that note, I also wished the story went into more depth when it came to the building and its heritage and when it came to Eric, too. But that’s just me being a sucker for history and love stories!

All in all, I have to say that “The Other Side” is a story about (good and bad) endings and new beginnings, so you should expect to feel a bit melancholic ♥ but it also made for a very cute summer read.

Oh, gods, I loved this book. It was such a cute book and well, the writing was great too!

I love the protagonist, Sadie and could relate to her in many ways. Her boyfriend of 3 years, Paul had broken up with her and had been cheating on her but she still liked him and wanted him back. She was overwhelmed with emotions and she broke down and ended up ranting to a complete stranger - Eric.

She makes up the most improbable situations in her head and that is something I always do! She is scared to date Eric because she is afraid of getting hurt again and I completely get what she is going through. Yes, it does get frustrating at times and I just want her to run to him but it is pretty realistic.

She cares too much, loves too deeply and 50% through the book, she thinks she's in love with Eric.

Yes, this is unrealistic in many ways but also not really. She doesn't know much about love but she does know that she likes him - a lot.

Eric is the love interest and well, I completely fell in love with him! He patiently listens to Sadie rant. He also brings her coffee and banana bread in the ice-cream shop later. He also makes an effort with Sadie's little sister and gets her to like him.

He likes her and so, he doesn't give up on her. He waits for her.

Oh, god, the second that they finally kiss is so amazing! Even though I've been waiting for the entire book for it and the kiss is not a moment too soon.

Then, there is the entire plot related to the selling of the flower shop which was Paulette's house in front of the ice-cream shop. I love how that is handled and how it is resolved.

Everything doesn't end with a 'happily ever after' but it is very realistic and I loved it!

This book is the story of the aftermath of a teenage break up where the girl learns that there is more to life. She enjoys the summer and finds that there is more to life. We join her on an adventure of finding new love and experience great things!

I’ve debated whether or not I should review my own books, but you know what? I’m going for it! Some of my favorite new and indie authors rate and review their own books, so I’m taking their lead on this. I love Sadie and Eric’s story, and I hope you do, too!

The idea for The Other Side grew from a particular trip I took to a small Tennessee town. There was an old ice cream stand just off the town square, and just seeing it there, in all its old-school glory, really warmed my heart. A couple years later when I started working on this manuscript, that ice cream stand popped into my head. I just hit “play” and let the story grow from there.

Sadie is a typical teenage girl dealing with the aftermath of a break-up. I hope she’s someone that many young girls and women can relate to. She can be insecure and scared. She feels deeply and loves deeply. She runs from herself and her problems. But, with the help of her friends and family, as well as her new love interest, there’s a point where her journey leads her to the other side of it all. She grows immensely, learns who she really is and how to be less afraid, and finally realizes what kind of love she deserves. I very much hope you enjoy riding along on this journey with her!

(3.5 stars) Netgalley gave me an ARC of this book for an honest review.

As I read Sarah Hocut's idyllic teen romance novel, I couldn't help but think of the old First Love series by Beverly Cleary, especially Fifteen, which was published over half a century ago. Sadie lives in a cute little southern town, scoops ice cream during the summer between graduation and her first year at college, and lives a relatively carefree life — until her boyfriend Paul unceremoniously dumps her. Sadie is crushed, but finds new purpose when she works to prevent a corporate ice cream store from moving into the old florist shop across the street. The developer's cute son, Eric, complicates her summer somewhat...

This is YA without modernity, which can be good or bad depending on what you want. If you're someone who wonders why "books these days" strive to include diversity, if you think there's "too much politics" seeping into novels, if you prefer your YA to be squeaky-clean, with a happy family life, and the most delinquent a person can be is by vandalizing golf holes with kitchen condiments, you'd probably enjoy this book. It felt like an extension of Cleary's 1950s series, where the worst thing that could happen is getting dumped, the worst faux pas you could do is spill soda on your dress, the worst confrontation you would have is with your ex in the town square.

I think my biggest issue — aside from the homogenized, white, heterosexual characters that make up every person in this book — is that the central conflict is resolved so easily and happily.

If you're fine with turning off your brain and thinking back to YA as a genre where two people are tug-of-warring with their emotions before they get together, this is pretty cute and fits the bill. I just think that a little more conflict would have boosted the story, given us more to chew on. As it is, it's a quick read, with a simple writing style that I think would appeal to younger YA readers (12-15).

Thank you to Netgalley!

Following a break up that she never saw coming, Sophia focuses her attention on keeping GiGi's - the town's one stop shop for ice cream - and the former flower shop across the street open when bigger competition comes to town, threatening demolition and shut downs in its wake.

Still reeling from her break up and the uncertain future of GiGi's, Sophia meets Eric, who proves to be a nice distraction - sweet, caring; an overall nice guy - who's father just happens to be behind all of Sophia's current worries.

The Other Side is an easy, sweet, swoony read that shows how change isn't always bad and how we need to learn to focus on the possibilities that comes with new beginnings rather than the losses of what we've grown comfortable to. You might just miss out on something - or someone - pretty great!

This isn't what I expected.

I feel a bit let down with this one. I thought The Other Side would be a cute summer read for my post-university reading binge but it's put me in a slump. The protagonist annoyed the shit out of me. God, she was so incredibly annoying. She spent so much time crying and whining over some guy that treat her like a piece of shit. And something else about Paul actually, everyone around her (i.e. family, friends and colleagues) all mutually agreed that they never liked him and yet didn't say anything about what trash he was or how she changed because of him, but okay.
But yes, a lot of this book is her whining about Paul and I got 40% before I was like

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

NOBODY CARES. You're annoying. Why does Eric like her, I don't even know. He was written to seem edgy too and it was very clique, like a lot of this story. I mean, of course he likes The Beatles and vinyl records, he's so incredibly original.
And the constant mentions of her sister being smart anytime she is brought up. We get it. Your sister is smort. We read it the first time.
Also, as I was reading this, I came across something that I was surprised to read. Sadie, our protag, says to herself 'God. I'm such a spastic' (or something along those lines). Um, is it okay to say this? I don't recall this being a word that's appropriate. I remember being told as a child that it's not a nice word to use. Hmm. Not cool, Sadie.

The overall storyline about the ice cream rivalry was a bit boring too, I just wasn't invested in it. It wasn't as fun as I'd hoped, I grew tired of this book very quickly. This isn't to say that you shouldn't give it a go though, it's just not for me.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

It's not a cliché per se but it's not exactly refreshing either. That being said, I think the author had a way with words which is a good thing but there were instances where the story telling wasn't vivid or even descriptive enough where it should've been. On the other hand, there were long descriptions of events that didn't need such attention like Sadie's daily routine or how she gets ready etc.

de them one dimensional. For instance, Sadie's breakup, that really should've been a moment where we should've seen her evolving from her naive self that got her heartbroken was not handled well. Instead of, taking the reader on the journey with Sadie, the author just told how she was a different person back then but never showed any traits that would've provided a contrast and would've helped the reader understand exactly how much she has changed. There were some grammatical errors that I found distracting.

That being said, it was a good read with smooth writing style and circumstances that most people can relate to. The language is easy to read and the narration flows easily. I would also like to give credit to the author for good timing when it comes to some light comedy.

“Remember, when things end, that just means there’s a beginning somewhere nearby.”

I read this ARC thanks to NetGalley and I have to say, I really enjoyed it. Some parts were your typical teen romance and some parts really tugged at my heartstrings. This was a quick read and I'm glad I discovered it. Also, I really loved Frankie and Sophia!

What a cute read. I loved the relationship Sadie has with her sister and parents. What a close family. It was great to see them interacting in a wholesome very loving way. Most of the books I read, the family has issues, so it was a nice change to read a book with a stable, loving, close-knit family.

Let me start the review off on this note... THIS BOOK WAS SO PERFECT AND I’VE ALREADY RECOMMENDED IT TO EVERYONE.
Sadie just graduated from high school, works at Gigi’s Dairy Bar, and is ready to take her summer head on, with her best friends Madison, Adam, and Sadie’s boyfriend Paul. But when Paul tells her he thinks they should break up without explanation, and a sign goes up in the yard of the old abandoned house next to the stand saying a Creamy King franchise is going to be built where the house is, threatening to put Gigi’s out of business, Sadie’s whole summer mood crashes around her. The owner of the Creamy King has a son named Eric, whom Sadie gets close to and starts developing feelings for. As she goes on her journey of trying to save the old house and Gigi’s while trying not to like Eric too much, she has to choose the route that makes her the happiest, while trying to figure out where she wants her life to go.
Oh. My. Goodness. This book was fantastic and I want to shove it in everyone’s face so I have someone to talk to about it. I just got Sadie on a level that I never thought I would with a character, even though I’ve never been through a breakup. She was just the most relatable character ever, and I understood her feelings toward wanting to do what is right and what makes her happy, especially when she doesn’t know which choice is the right one. Sadie is a very family oriented person, and I love it when books have a side focus of family. Her parents were awesome, and I wish I had a little sister like Sadie’s.
Eric is like the guy of every girls dreams. Sweet, understanding, and totally dreamy. A total catch. I have always loved the meet cute/girl has anxiety attack and guy comes to save the day trope. Eric is seriously the best gift giver ever. He just does it so naturally and he knows exactly what to get people, and I would honestly like to know why he isn’t REAL?! I mean, come on people. I’m waiting.
I hope that one day I get to see Sara Hocut’s books in the bookstores, because I think she’s one of the best contemporary authors out there. She definitely could give some of the authors a run for their money, that’s for sure.
To conclude my review, I just want to say that I want to give this book a 10 out of 5 stars to this book, and I think everyone should read it. I think everyone will thank me later.

What I Liked:

This was a really sweet (no pun intended) summer romance book. I am a sucker for a good YA summer romance and this had a lot of key parts of that. I enjoyed Gigi’s Dairy Bar as a setting, and found myself easily becoming invested in the outcome. Sadie was a good main character for this story and it was nice to see her growth. However, the character that truly stood out to me the most was Eric. He was such an excellent character. I loved him.

What I Didn’t Like:

The plot went pretty quickly and ended up being a little anti-climactic. I would have liked the book to be slightly longer with more relationship building between Sadie and Eric. It was hard to be fully invested in their relationship at the end of the book because there was so little of it developed in the story. A main portion of the plot seemed to revolve around Sadie trying to save Gigi’s but then that part kind of disappeared. It would have been nicer to see Sadie put more of her time and effort into instead of just being told that she had worked really hard on it.

Overall, this was a light and fun summer romance to read that will be perfect for a day at the beach.

The Other Side is about Sadie Wills, a girl who had just experienced a breakup from her boyfriend of 3 years. Sadie wonders how things turned this way when the week before, they were both taking cute selfies together. To make matters worse they broke up the day after high school graduation, and it seems like the ex already has a new girl. Then we meet the cute guy working across the street at a flower’s shop, Eric. Feelings arise and sparks fly, but the problem is Eric’s Dad is behind the company who’s planning to demolish the old flower shop, which Sadie was planning to save, and will probably be steering customers away from the ice cream shop where she is currently working.

“Torn by the arguments between her head and her heart, Sadie becomes very good at running over the summer. Running from her past. Running from her feelings. Running from love.”

First of all, this book cover is so cute. I love book covers that actually relate to the content of the actual book. From the cover alone you can probably tell that this novel is a Young Adult contemporary romance. I don’t usually reach for contemporary romances, but these days I’ve been needing my fill on cliche romances and swoon-worthy-boy-next-doors. This book gave me some of that.

It was definitely cliche. There wasn't an instant-love trope but it was weird how it was only the second time that they've met and the girl's already wondering if Eric is like her ex Paul- texting some other girl while she's sitting right next to him. Then, she's on this whole swooning fest about his "messy but perfect hair". As for the swoon-worthy-boy-next-door, it definitely was not Eric.

This is more of a personal thing, but something I don't like in books is when the character is subconsciously talking to him/herself in their head-inner speech- and the thoughts are written in italics. I find it really cringy at times, especially in this book.

46% into the book and she already thinks she loves him.

The plot was kind of all over the place and the writing style did not really work for me. At times I felt like some scenes were just fillers and the book could make do without them. Because of those fillers scenes, I found myself getting quite bored and was reluctant to continue reading. The author's writing style does not seem to be quite descriptive, and because I'm the type of reader who wants to be immersed in the book, the writing style did not appeal to me.

On a more positive note, I liked the friendship dynamic between Sadie and her best friend Madison. I liked that Madison was there for Sadie when she needed her and really did try to cheer her best friend up. We got to see Sadie's little sister Sophie, who is the cutest and silliest little thing, set her sister and Eric up.

I would only recommend this to very specific people. I'd recommend this to someone who is starting out with YA contemporary romances for the romance aspect and not the plot.

A special thank you to Netgalley and Sarah Hocut for providing a free advance digital copy of this book in exchange for a honest review.

This book follows Sadie's summer after high school graduation, focusing on the past while moving forwards towards her future. I love the premises of this and the portrayal of a small town. Like, it felt realistic and everyone was invested in everyone else and knew it. There is so much personality within the town itself and I liked the descriptions of all the little shops and activities that were able to make this town be unique and at the same time just like every other small town.

I love this genre but this book was just too much, even for me. There just didn't feel like there was a whole lot there beyond this. At one point, I just turned off my device because I was so irritated with how just not it was. No realizations, not a whole lot of growth, and not even the lead couple was that cute or anything. I was not invested in the characters. Sadie annoyed me and was just full of contradictions. You don't get a full academic scholarship to a school and then talk about your first grade sister like her IQ is 50 points above everyone else in the family. Now, Sophia was adorable but still. The interactions felt really plain and dull and I just wanted more there. I wanted more lively and interesting main characters that I would find myself caring about instead of just not really caring.

I realize that sounds a little harsh, but the book is still a fun and easy read within the YA romance genre. I just definitely would not recommend expecting to get a whole lot out of this book like I typically expect from other books within the genre.

Received from Netgalley for review.

This book is... okay. It's not bad, necessarily, and the author does have some really good things going for her in her writing. For instance, she's really good at showing instead of telling when she wants to be; she didn't have to state that Abbyville is in the south because the mannerisms of her characters show this as a quaint little southern town

Unfortunately, she does tend to fall into the trap of telling instead of showing a LOT. Telling us that Sophia is clever instead of showing her doing things that prove she's clever, telling us that she loves Paul instead of giving us time to see it for ourselves, going right into the epic breakup. Telling us, then, that Paul is an awful person instead of giving us examples, telling us that Sadie was a completely different person while she was dating him instead of giving us a way of seeing it for ourselves and coming to that conclusion.

Not to mention that this book tends to have weird pacing. It spends an inordinant amount of time describing mundane activities like getting ready in the morning (Sadie takes so many flipping showers!) and then skipping right over important events like her quest with Pete to find evidence of Paulette's house being a historic landmark.

It's also peppered with typos and formatting errors. Not a TON, but they're somewhat consistent enough that it can't really be forgiven as typical human error; misformatting dialog tags and things like that. Not to mention really newbie writer errors like using things as dialog tags that aren't physically possible (they smile a lot of dialog).

It's a good effort and, like I said, not terrible, but not particularly engaging, either. I'd put it as just below average.

Oh i loved this book so much! It's the perfect summer contemporary romance!

After being dumped by her seemingly perfect boyfriend of 3 years - Paul. Sadie is devastated and doesn't know how to be alone. She is so confused, angry, upset she can't see her life without him and can't see how she can move on.

Enter the beautiful Eric who takes her breath away one day in a record shop when she's having a panic attack. Eric is a sweet, charming and thoughtful guy who never gives up on being a friend to Sadie throughout the turmoil of emotions she feels. He cheers her up and stops her thinking of Paul and they start to fall for eachother. I can't forget to mention her brilliant friends Madison and Adam who are always there for her and will be honest when she doesn't want to hear the ugly truth.

I can't begin to describe how much i needed this book right now. I have had my heart broken in the same way and you can't imagine the pain you feel when the person you loved just discards you the way Paul did to Sadie. They always say time is a great healer and although it's painful you start to see how things really were in your relationship and something 100x better and more real comes along.

I highly recommend this if you like cutesy romances set in summer and brilliant characters.

Sadie and Paul have been together for three years. She thought they were happy until the night he told her “I think we should break up.” Just like that what should have been her dream summer between high school and college was ruined. Sadie can’t imagine life without her ex-boyfriend, at least until Eric shows up.

But the problem with Eric is that he just might be working with the enemy. His dad is about to run Sadie’s employer and friend out of business. How can she fall for someone who would put an established company out of business? How can she fall for someone so soon after her break-up?

I enjoyed this book.

*** Spoiler ***
It was a fun read and I liked how Sadie was able to see the differences between the two guys. What I didn’t like was the fact that she had spent three years with Paul thinking they were the perfect couple when apparently they weren’t. The relationship between Sadie and Madison (and even Adam) was very sweet.

It was a good, clean read that I’d recommend to Christian teens who want something to read for the summer.

Thanks, NetGalley for an ARC.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

I didn't know what I was getting when I requested the ARC to "The Other Side". All I knew was that the book was a YA novel and I wanted it. What can I say, I love YA novels. "The Other Side" tells the story of Sadie and her last summer before college. Sadie thinks that she has it all figured out. The perfect boyfriend, college in the Fall, working at an ice cream store, sounds like a great summer story. Well Sadie's boyfriend Paul breaks the news to her that he wants to break up. Why? Turns out he has been cheating on her? Crazy right! Well Sadie is devastated and in order to take her mind off of it she focuses on a new business that is trying to open that is an ice cream store. And cue Eric. Oh Eric. The cute boy next door...literally.

This novel captivated me from page one with it's cute story and great characters. This is the perfect Summer read, or anytime read actually. Just read it, especially if you are looking for a great summer plot and romance.

Firstly, I would like to say that although you should never judge a book by it's cover, I think this one is adorable! When you get inside, the story is also well aligned with that notion.
I really enjoyed reading about Sadie's summer, which really took me back to being that age with the same worries.
While there were some really nice moments for Sadie's relationships (I loved her family dynamic, sense of belonging in her town, friendship with Madison and especially the one with her younger sister), I did find some of the plot a little bit predictable.
That said, I would definitely recommend it for an easy read and found it enjoyable.

When I started this book, I didn’t have much expectation. I just wanted an easy YA read to finish quickly. The beginning didn’t grab me that much, even though the break up rang true to me - I remember being 18 and feeling like the world was over when a boy ended things. I felt like Sadie acted just like I remember! But the more we got to know the characters, the further I started falling for this book. I really loved Madison and Eric in particular, but to be honest, all of the characters were delightful.

I wouldn’t have given this 5 stars if it wasn’t for the ending. It didn’t stop with the perfect kiss or when two characters finally realised their love for each other. Oh no. Sadie managed to prove her worth as a main character and DAMN I loved it.

I received an ARC of this from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions in this review are my own.

A book of endings and new beginnings. I laughed and I cried. The summer after graduating high school starts with Sadie’s boyfriend dumping her. She then finds out that an ice cream franchise is planning on demolishing an old house across from Gigi’s ice cream shop and Sadie has convinced herself it will put Gigi’s out of business. To forget her broken heart Sadie fights to stop the demolition of the house. She suddenly finds herself falling for Eric. The only problem is his dad owns the company in charge of demolishing the house.
Definitely a cute read. It made me reminisce of my first breakup, graduating high school, and the last summer before college.

I really enjoyed this book! It’s a cute and sweet read. I loved reading Sadie’s character development throughout it and the realisation that her relationship with Paul wasn’t as picture perfect as she once thought. I loved her relationship with Madison, it makes you long for a friendship like theirs. I also loved the family dynamic and found it to be relatable and loved every part that her little sister, Sophia, was in! Eric is the perfect book boyfriend and he is putting the standards up pretty high. He is so sweet and kind. This was a very cute and cheesy romance but I loved every part of it!

I mainly chose to read "The Other Side" for its delightful cover, however, once I started to read the story I found it to be a beautifully written romance. It was a gorgeous read about first love, finding yourself, heartbreak, working out those things that really matter in life and understanding what is important.

I recommend this pleasant and wholesome read.

I received a complimentary digital copy of this novel at my own request from the publisher via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

The Other Side is a fun romantic novel that is sweet.

The characters are lovable and the setting is just perfect. Love this book and can’t wait for more from this author.

Wasn’t sure about this at first, but I quickly found myself falling for it. The protagonist and love-interest were very likeable, not to mention everyone else that lived in the small town. It was a fun, short read that I would have enjoyed at any time of the year, no matter what mood I was in!
Also want to add that I LOVED the relationships between the protagonist and the older members of the town - so cute!!

This book was a classic romance book. I loved the story line, the concept was unique and the characters were quirky. The romance in the book was nothing new but it was really brought to life through the characters. Although I would to have read more emotion from the characters. Overall it was a nice, quick read, 4/5 ⭐️

I was looking for a breezy, light read and this book did the trick. I enjoy YA books due to their easy reading quality. However, this one was definitely a REALLY young, YA book. Nevertheless the characters were likeable, as was the story line and it gave my mind a break from the twisted thrillers I usually read.
