In this interlocking prose web of first-person testimony, novelist, poet, and playwright Ariel Dorfman relates the struggles of fifty human rights activists hailing from more than forty countries. Manifesto for Another World features the words and struggles of internationally celebrated activists including Vaclav Havel, Baltasar Garzón, Helen Prejean, and Marian Wright Edelman; and Nobel Prize Laureates the Dalai Lama, Desmond Tutu, Elie Wiesel, Oscar Arias Sánchez, Rigoberta Menchú Tum, José Ramos-Horta, and Bobby Muller. Equally moving are the stories of more than thirty others, unknown and (as yet) unsung beyond their national boundaries: Kailash Satyarthi, who has spent a lifetime working to free tens of thousands of victims of child labor in his native India, and Juliana Dogbadzi, who was sold into sexual slavery by her parents at age twelve, escaped after seventeen degrading years, and now is devoted to the liberation of African girls bound in the same terror. From their ranging voices Dorfman culls the message: freedom from persecution, and freedom of opportunity, for all. Manifesto for Another World is both a political testament and a work of art.

Vladimiro Ariel Dorfman is an Argentine-Chilean novelist, playwright, essayist, academic, and human rights activist. A citizen of the United States since 2004, he has been a professor of literature and Latin American Studies at Duke University, in Durham, North Carolina since 1985.

‎دوستانِ گرانقدر، این کتاب نمایشنامه ای است بسیار نارحت کننده و تأثیر گذار... عده ای زن و مرد، از جاهایِ گوناگون صداهایی را فرستادند و از ظلم و ستمی که به روش هایِ مختلف بر آنها رفته است سخن گفته اند
‎بدن هایی که این صداها از آنها بر می خيزد، یا خود شخصاً قربانیِ خشونت شده اند و یا شاهدِ ستمگری بر انسان یا یک گروه از مردم بوده اند. برخی دزدیده شدنِ پدر، پسر یا همسرِ خویش را در یک شبِ تاریک و دردناک، به چشم دیده اند... برخی شاهد این بوده اند که در بعضی از کشورها کودکان را برایِ قتل و کشتارِ دیگران، آموزش داده اند و از آنان در سنينِ پایين برای کشتنِ دیگران استفاده کرده اند... برخی دیگر، کتک خوردنِ دانشجویانِ معترض، مثله کردن یا همان تکه تکه کردنِ زنان، سرکوب و کشتارِ توده ها، به گلوله بستنِ کارگرانی که برای افزایشِ دستمزدِ خویش مبارزه می کردند، را به چشمِ خویش دیده اند... هرکدامشان دردها و بدبختی هایی از این قبيل را مشاهده کرده اند: کسی را به سببِ رنگِ پوست یا رنگِ عقایدش کشتند.. کسانی را به زیرزمينهای خفقان آور کشانده و سر به نيستشان کردند.. سربازانی را دیده اند که تفنگهایشان را بر توده ها نشانه رفته و بر آنان آتش گشوده اند، خشونت عليهِ زنانی را دیده اند که جرأت کرده اند تا خودشان شریکِ زندگیِ خویش را انتخاب کنند. زمينهایِ مورثی اجدادِ خویش را دیده اند که چگونه از دستِ بوميانِ سرزمينهایِ گوناگون به زور گرفته شده اند، جنگلهایی که ویران شده اند و زبانهایی که سخن گفتن با واژگانِ آن ممنوع اعلام گشته است. اینها، سانسورِ کتابها، شکنجهٔ دوستان، و به بردگی گرفتنِ کودکان را به چشم خویش دیده اند. آنها وکلایی را دیده اند که به خاطرِ دفاع از قربانيانِ دولتی به زندان افتاده اند و یا به تبعيد اجباری تن داده اند

Manifesto for Another World by Ariel Dorfman is a fantastic read by a great Latino writer. It is a play in its performative nature, but beyond that it reaches the part of yourself that simply likes to hear stories, even though these stories are of the hardships and traumas of significant human rights activists from all around the world. Eight actors act as vessels for multiple voices, while the ninth actor portrays "the Man," presumably the Man of Western society but also the Man who refuses to truly acknowledge all of this. If this doesn't solidify the importance of our voices in such tumultuous climate around the world, I don't know what does. This inspires me to keep learning and to keep speaking out.
