My Thoughts /
Rounding up to 3.5⭐
A Dead Market is the second book in the Flamingo Realty Mystery series written by author, CeeCee James.
After finishing the first book, Mind Your Manors back in April of last year, I dropped some Flamingo Facts into my review (which I'm sure you all highly appreciated!!!!! hahaha). So in keeping with that theme, here are a couple of new ones:
🦩 One-Legged Sleepers: Flamingos often stand on one leg to conserve body heat, as they can tuck the other leg into their warm, downy feathers to reduce heat loss. 🦩 In the wild, Flamingos typically live 20 to 30 years, but can live over 50 years in captivity. 🦩 Flamingos primarily drink fresh water even though they mainly inhabit saline harsh environments. To counter this, Flamingos have evolved highly developed supraorbital salt glands which act as a filtering system to remove excess salt from their blood. 🦩 Despite their long legs and awkward, s-shaped necks, Flamingos are excellent, strong fliers.
And the prize for "best pun" goes to……..A Dead Market with: I was feeling about as jumpy as a long-tailed cat in a room of rocking chairs.
Now I know that real estate agents don't get the best wrap here in Australia – they rank right up there with dodgy used car salesmen – but let's just take a minute and feel a little empathy here for Stella O'Neil. I mean the poor girl has just gotten her first listing [yay, a cause for excitement!!] as a real estate agent and what happens??? She arrives at the property to zhuzh it up before her first lot of potential buyers turn up and what does she see? A cute cabin with a gorgeous lake on eighty acres of breathtaking land [yes!] but there's just one tiny problem: the body floating in the lake. [oh well, the excitement was great while it lasted.]
Unfortunately (for Stella), the body is not the only thing in the lake. It turns out that the original house on the property was flooded decades ago when a decision was made to build a dam to form Johnson Lake. The house has remained perfectly in tact, preserved in its underwater grave. Local lore has it that the original owner buried treasure somewhere in the house and that it has lain there unearthed all this time, until the sale of the property sparked a new round of rumours.
With the property becoming over-run with eager treasure hunters all posing as potential buyers, will Stella get her sale? Is there really treasure buried in the lake? Will the mysterious floating body be identified?
Her next words sounded as high and excited as a pig’s squeal running from wrestlers at a rodeo. “Are you serious? Next time call! Like right away!”
In my most humble opinion this book is most likely not going to win a Booker prize, or any other literary award for that matter. But what it will win is your heart - for a cosy-mystery series with some of the most quirky, relatable, humorous and entertaining characters you will find in a story; and a special shout-out for the cray-cray situations they find themselves in.
I really would like to rate this book higher, but oh the inconsistencies! First of all there is a scene where she makes tea and goes with it to the couch and then on the next page takes a sip of her coffee. Next her landlord was named Tanya Crawford in the first book and she said that the house Stella was renting was her first house when she was newly married. In this book, after Stella finds the poem written on the stairs by someone named Gaila, she searches her landlords name and then lets her know leading the reader to believe maybe it was Mrs. Crawford's daughter. Later, however, when she talks to Mrs Crawford she reveals that she herself wrote it at age 11. Am I the only one who hates stuff like this? Get an editor or review team who won't blow smoke up your butt.
Book two in this fun series was an interesting twist to selling real estate! Stella's first listing turns out to be a murder scene and bizarre location for a following of gamers who are trying to solve a riddle. While clueless at first, Stella catches on and does some research online that gets her answers.
I am fascinated about a house "buried" under water and the fact that it was undisturbed for so many years. Ms James made it into a story that held my interest up to the very end. I was glad that Stella's landlady was a part of this book again, as well as more interaction with her grandfather, Oscar.
Again I am looking forward to the next book in the series. It's not that the murders are incredibly difficult to solve (although since Stella is a total novice solving murders it is still impressive) but the total package of the property and people she has to deal with combined with the murder makes for an interesting book. I like getting to know Stella and her family members as well as watch how Stella handles whatever life throws at her!
All newly-licensed real estate agent Stella wanted to do was show and sell a house, was that really too much to ask? And what does a dead guy in the lake by the house have to do with a bunch of people suddenly searching for a strange sword? It all seemed like it was out of a video game to Stella. But with her uncle and Kari's help, she managed to crack this case too before she was framed for a murder.
I loved that when Stella finally figured out the killer, she had the good sense to do what she did (not gonna spoil it, nothing earth-shattering, just smart on her part). Grab the book or use your KU to see whether Stella got her first sale or not. It's interesting how these books end after solving the mystery by pulling the reader in with another type of mystery. It definitely made me download it the next one, lol.
4 stelle scarse Veloce lettura.
A cute cozy. Tella O'Neil has just started her career as a Realtor and has as her first listing a little cabin with a large piece of land. Unfortunately, in the lake behind the cabin she finds a dead body floating in the water. Apparently, an old house was flooded when the lake was created by a dam, and the stories of treasure are bringing lots of treasure hunters that are not interested in the house. Next thing she knows, Stella has picked up a stalker on the internet. Its just one thing after another! A cute cozy.
These books are really not well written. I said that in my review of the 1st one and I said that I probably wouldn't read any more of them. I lied. I have a thing for characters. When I like them I'm willing to put up with problematic issues like bad grammar and poor punctuation. The author has a problem recognizing the difference between plurals and possessives. It annoys the daylights out of me. But here's my problem: I like Stella. She's a plucky gal and a bit of an underdog. So I'm probably going to read the rest of these just to see where she goes.
Still in all, the story line, while intriguing and pretty original, could have been fleshed out SO much better. She just doesn't give it the detail and energy it (and Stella) deserves. Again, the word "perfunctory" says it best. The thing that really irritates me is that I can pretty clearly see her talent in the rest of the story, and it irks me that she's depriving her readers of what they deserve. It feels like she's hoarding her talent. For a "USA TODAY best-selling author," she surely leaves a lot to be desired.
New realtor Stella O’Neil has her first listing and can’t wait to make her mark. Unfortunately, the property comes with a floating dead body in the lake and a lot of strange potential buyers. As Stella works to solve the case she discovers an old legend that has been sparked by social media and game room chats groups. Can Stella uncover the clues, solve the murder, and sell her first property?
If you enjoy madcap adventures, quirky characters, well-written storylines, and a book with lots of twists and turns, then you are going to enjoy this new cozy mystery series by CeeCee James. I can’t wait for the next book in the series.
This was a cute book. I really hope there are many more to come in the series. The ending leaves off with a bigger mystery that I cannot wait to dig into. The story was really good, it was well written and interesting, the characters were good and I loved the small town, and especially that the main character is just starting in town much like the readers of the book are. Well, I have the next book in the series waiting for me so I have to go read it now.
Wow! What a fabulous book 2. Stella’s got her first listing and is amazed that everyone wants a showing. When she realizes there’s a rumor about a valuable piece of treasure on the property, she realizes why everyone wants to see the house. Finding a dead body doesn’t help things. Can Stella solve the murder crime, find the treasure, and sell the house all at one time?
I really got into it and could hardly put it down. Now I need the next one in the series to read. I love how she's trying to reunite her family together and hope that works out. And she sold her first house!! Awesome!!! I want to grow up to be just like her.............strong, fearless, driven, and thoughtful. Thanx to the author for such a great series, one of many she's written. I love them all!
Stella O'Neil finally has her first official real estate listing. The house is at Johnson Lake, where the original house had flooded many years earlier. What was originally the Johnson home was now at the bottom of a lake and Old Mr. Johnson had died trying to salvage some of his family's things. This lead to a rumor that the property was haunted, in addition to a rumor of buried treasure at the bottom of the lake. While checking the property and waiting for a prospective buyer to show up, Stella spots a body floating in the lake. The body is that of Lenny Johnson, the previous owner of the property. Following the discovery of the body, the property is overrun by treasure hunters.
Who killed Lenny Johnson? Why was he killed? Is the treasure really still at the bottom of the lake? Does the treasure really exist? Will Stella be able to get any valid offers for the property? Can Stella solve the mystery of Lenny's death?
CeeCee James has well developed characters and situations. This story delves deeper into Stella's background and explains more about who she is and why she reacts the way she does. Although not related to the mystery, the book ends with a slight personal cliff-hanger that leaves you looking forward to the next book in the series.
A treasure hunt turned deadly. This storyline of this second book of the series is fascinating. Stella is doing the prep work to show a new listing when she notices something, or is it someone, floating on the lake down the hill. Years ago, a house stood at the bottom of that hill before the flooding that created the lake. If local rumors are true, that same house still stands, underwater, and may be home to hidden treasure. Has someone died while on a treasure hunt? Once again Stella has happened upon a dead body and her curiosity sweeps her into the investigation. Will her observations help local law enforcement solve this crime?
Stella’s family has more drama and secrets than most. Will she be able to find out why the men in her family are determined to nurture a twenty-year grudge and estrangement? Why must they be so stiff-necked? Is it not enough that she must deal with the anxiety relating to a murder investigation without the added drama of her father, uncle, and grandfather refusing to communicate?
This is a fun, clean, and easy read. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys an entertaining whodunit.
In succession over the course of one afternoon / evening!
For some reason, my favourite cozies are stories of people starting over and Stella's story in Flamingo Realty is just that. She gives up a corporate job, moves back to the town she was born, and starts a completely new career.
James writes her characters well, makes you cheer them on to success, worry over their mistakes. Uncle Chris, Oscar, & Steve were protective as only family can be, and the burgeoning friendship with Kari is really fun to watch.
Great stories, well developed and - most importantly - believable! Numbers the and four are waiting on my Kindle, I know what I'll be doing tomorrow!
This is the second book in this cozy mystery series and I'm really enjoying it. Set in a small town in Pennsylvania, Stella has returned to her home town toi work at her Uncle's Reality company.
Her first listing sees a small cabin on a large piece of land, but rumour amongst the gaming community is that there's a hidden item in the lake on the property which causes her some issues. When a body is found in the lake, the area becomes a crime scene, can she find out who is the murderer abd sell the property?
They're is another storyline running throughout these books, the talk reason why her Dad took her away from the area at a young age, and what happened to her Mum?
These books are best read in order of publication to preserve continuity of the characters and series.
Naturally nothing can go easy as Stella O'Neil get's her first real listing. It's a nice cottage on a mysterious lake. The idea of the house under the water of the lake was intriguing. I'd have like to read some description about what the divers saw when they dove down into Lake Johnson.
I especially enjoyed how CeeCee James, the author, ended many of the chapters in this second in the series of her A Flamingo Realty Mystery books with a one sentence cliff hanger even if we could guess what was coming next. Short, sweet and cute. I'm starting to like the secondary characters more as we get to know them better too.
A feud by story but nothing happening in the book. A body is found in the lake of a property for sale. Thought to be ancient sword in the lake brings out people searching for it. The story ends too abruptly without much suspense. The characters are interesting with a broken connection between father and sons Stella, is trying to mend. Wish there would have been more mystery to the story.
Another delightful cozy mystery from CeeCee James. This new series is exploring new territory even though it is set in the same town as the Baker Street mysteries. It also has some wonderful new characters even though we will get to explore more of at least one character from Baker street. The feel of the books is familiar and yet fresh. I can highly recommend any book that features a hundred year old feud, a submerged house, and a mysterious floating corpse.
Stella is off to a good start and gets her own listing. The old house sits on a lake and there is some sort of old dispute with a neighboring family, but that doesnt explain why so many people are interested. But Stella digs up some internet gossip that a clue to an old treasure is on the property. She also gains a stalker that no one takes seriously. Stella figures it out of course and we lean a bit more about her family history
Book 2 in this series. While it stands alone I highly recommend you read Book 1 first. What is Stella's Uncle secret? Now we wait for Book 3 to find out. I gave this book 4⭐ as after reading Book 1 I felt it just lacked that "I can't put it down" little something that Book 1 had in spades.
Stella, has her first Real Estate listing, and there she finds another body.
Syria's journey in Pennsylvania continues. She's a learning her new job, making contact with her Grandfather and solving the mystery. If you want a quick interesting story you can read in a couple of hours, you will love this series of mysteries.
I love this series! It keeps me reading to try and figure out who the bad guy is. Will the grandfather reconcile with the sons? If you are looking for a good book without all the bad language, graphic violence and all that comes with it; this series is for you! I can hardly wait for book 3!
I purchased a copy of A Dead Market (A Flamingo Realty Mystery Book 2) by CeeCee James and this review was given freely. A highly descriptive story of family, good friends, murder, and a struggle to succeed. A feud, a riddle, a treasure at the bottom of the lake and a body floating on the lake complicate Stella's newest attempt to complete her first real estate deal.
I'm enjoying this series, except for the poor editing. Stella, the protagonist, finds a body floating in the lake next to her first real estate listing. She goes about solving the mystery of who killed Old Man Lenny in part by using the internet. I like how she and her father (and others) use text messaging to communicate... very realistic in today's world.
Cute story ..spelling and grammatical issues make this cozy mystery a tougher read
This story was a cute cozy mystery with way to many spelling errors. I will probably read the 3rd book in this series because I have enjoyed Stella and her life challenges. If it has as many errors as this one did, it will be my last. Won't begin another series by this same author.😣
This book kept my interest all the way through with Stella moving to Pennsylvania to work for her uncle Chris in the Flamingo Reality. The first house she was given to sell was old and the owner was drowned in the lake that the original house had been flooded. The rest of the story is filled with Stella's adventure.
I hope this takes off and we get to see tons of books in this series. I find this well written and a lot of fun. I can't wait for the next book to come out. Keep it up CeeCee.
I really enjoyed this latest cozy. The storyline was entertaining and I loved the quirky characters. This book is recommended for those who love cozy mysteries.
