It's 2012 and David Cameron is Prime Minister of Great Britain, but his position is tenuous. He is the leader of a Coalition government, and people are plotting his downfall, (many of them his friends). It's not a good time to leave Parliament behind in London and take a trip up north to Manchester, but Mr Cameron is desperate to show his administration is succeeding. It seems a gold opportunity to open the new Digital Media Centre at Salford University, just the sort of project he wants to see more of. Unfortunately, other people know that he's on his way and have laid their plans. They are terrorists, but not the sort that usually make the papers. They aren't even foreigners, just home-grown Brits, with a grievance against the media. Kidnapping is a serious step, but they are at the end of their tethers. They want action, and any means of getting the publicity the so crave seems worth while. It shouldn't involve Melia - she hasn't been asked to help, this time, but an unfortunate series of coincidences has placed her in the same building as her erstwhile boss, and she just can't help but get involved. That would be easy, but there's more bad luck for her, a lack of weapons and resources and the worst handicap of all - the self-styled Leader of the negotiating team is none other than Caulfield, Deputy Director of Melia's unit. The man is so glaringly incompetent, there is a serious risk her could get them all killed. It's going to need a far more stable head than his, to bring this siege to a satisfactory conclusion, but in the heat of the action, everything that Caulfield does only seems to make the situation worse. So, how, Melia asks herself, can this mayhem get even worse? Why, only if the next body out of the lift belongs not to a rescuer, or even another kidnapper, but the drug addled younger sibling of David Cameron himself! With the Prime Minister's loyalties and attention being dragged every which way. Melia is forced to try all manner of means to save lives, even if it involves lowering herself out of a window on a rope. Never the best idea, when no one else in the whole building has any interest at all in saving her. Worst of all, of course, is that the fact this this stand-off is Big News, but in the country and round the world. The vultures of the media have gathered. Melia is anxious to deny them the sight of any scraps, failures or defeats, but it needs a decent plan to pull off a rescue. Maybe, she can do that, with the aid of a few families of gun-toting neighbours. The people of Salford - those are the only people Melia can count on, at the climax.
Born in the Delta, south west of England where the curlews fly and the marigolds vanish, Mike quickly read through his local library and went looking for where the Industrial Revolution started in Britain. He arrived in Manchester in 1974, carried on his education at the local Polytechnic and was thrilled to be encouraged to read books and talk about them: writing the essays, however, was a chore. After a bit of teaching and years of Community Development, (where he helped people do what they wanted to do but sometimes didn't know it), he moved on into semi-retirement and found the time to construct more than one novel. Fashioning stories out of the clay of mortal men and the dust from the Inner City streets, he spins yarns that are always partly true but mostly happen in a universe where being 'fair' is fine, and being generous is expected. It's a moral place (with no swearing.) Sorry if that's confusing for people, such as; the 'Mickey from Manchester' series is not set in Real Manchester. It's more like a Mythical Manchester or a Make-Believe Manchester. And his real name's not 'Mickey' !
