A Puppy Play Romance

One accident has turned Jackson’s life completely upside down.

When Jackson’s sister inadvertently posts an ad for a puppy play book instead of his dog training business, his inbox explodes with the most interesting emails he’s ever seen. In a sea of kink that he’s never even considered, one sweet letter stands out. It’s polite and earnest, and something about the two men’s words touches him in a way he never expected…but they’re not just looking for a lover…they’re looking for a master.

If finding a master for one pup was hard, finding a master who wanted two was almost impossible.

Cooper and Sawyer know that they have a better chance of winning the lottery than meeting the man of their dreams. Mature, sweet, dominant masters don’t just drop out of the sky…and when they add in the fact that they’re looking for a man who will love them both, the odds are astronomical. When they see Jackson’s ad online, Cooper couldn’t be more excited. He’s confident that the mysterious man who hints at being a master will be perfect for them. Sawyer, on the other hand, isn’t so sure that everything will go the way Cooper imagines, but saying no to Cooper is like stopping an excitable, well-meaning train. However, when Jackson actually responds to their email, suddenly the impossible seems to be right within their grasp.

Sparks and laughter fly as Cooper and Sawyer get to know the man who just might become their accidental master.

After reading this book, I can say with certainty that puppy play is not my thing. Maybe because I have pups, and have worked with and trained dogs for two decades, puppy kink is right up there with Little play as a hard NO.

A grown man barking and carrying a ball with his teeth while naked, aroused, and wearing a butt plug tail is (at least to my sensitivities) disturbing, not hot. To each their own, of course, but I need brain bleach STAT.

But I'm not judging this book on kink alone. I knew what I was getting into.

Clearly, I'm very much in the minority, but I find Innes' writing to be amateurish and simplistic. Everyone talks like they're on an 80s sitcom! The dialogue is full of exclamation points!!

Even the premise of the mixed-up ad was ridiculous. I mean, how stupid was Jackson's sister?

I found myself skimming a lot because not much happened here; it was all exposition.

I just realized this is the first book of a series with the same MCs, so the abrupt ending makes more sense, but I won't be reading more.

So if you’ve been following me for a while, you must know that I stay the hell away from ménage and polyamorous relationships. 😂 Out of all the depraved and kinky things I’m into, this is my only pet peeve. That being said, I surprised myself when I found myself wanting to listen this book, and again in the beginning, mainly because it’s puppy play and the narrator is Kenneth Obi. 😁 And this book really surprised me because I found myself rooting for all 3 MCs and wishing that the relationship among them would work well. 🥰

Cooper and Sawyer are two hopeful pups who are finding a perfect master who will look after and love both of them. So when they found an ad online about this master, they thought they won the jackpot. But the thing is it was an ad mix-up and Jackson actually trains dogs for his business and not a master who’s into BDSM. Or is he? 😏 Sometimes the universe works in mysterious ways and the most hilarious and impossible mistakes can be the best and truest thing that could have happened to you in your life. Now, the journey to love, acceptance and belonging begins for these three men who needed each other to achieve that happily ever after.

I think I love Cooper most in this story because of his refreshing energy and optimism despite everything he had to go through in his life. And Sawyer is such a sweet sweet guy who loves Cooper with all his heart. 😍 But what they needed, they couldn’t fulfill for each other and that’s why they needed a third in their relationship. (They are both subs. 😌) and Jackson the master filled that role beautifully. It was lovely to see how these three characters came together to form a lovely, healthy relationship. Now I admit that may be I just haven’t found a right ménage book for me because I obviously loved this book. 😁 And wow, I’m especially impressed with Kenneth Obi’s narration in this one because he has a deep masculine voice and he nailed it to do Cooper’s very bouncy, energetic and youthful voice. Kudos to him! 👏 His narration conveyed the story beautifully and added a whole new depth to it. I’m very happy with this book and can’t wait to start listening book 2 now.

This was better than I expected!

I’ve read several M.A. Innes books now and while I liked them, they didn’t wow me. I always felt that some stories were sometimes a little too slow and 'instruction manual like' on the whole kink thing.

But… we have a winner here!
I really liked this. This felt less like an instruction manual on puppy play and more like a story about two cute guys and their sweet master.

Jackson is quite surprised he is getting all kinds of offers in his email. Offers of the kinky kind. Turns out his sister mistakenly placed his dog training add in the kink section, so people think he is teaching puppy play classes for unruly ‘pups’.

But when Jackson is writing rejection note number 500, he comes across a very sweet email of Sawyer. Sawyer and his boyfriend Cooper are both submissive pups and are looking for a master. Jackson can’t get the two out of his mind after seeing their picture and the 3 end up emailing quite a bit.

Cooper is convinced Jackson is curious enough about them to meet them, but Sawyer isn’t so sure. The guy isn’t even kinky. But it turns out Jackson just didn’t know that side of him existed yet…

I really liked these guys together. Sawyer was the sweet worrier who had trouble letting go, Cooper was the bouncy pup, and Jackson the sweet, but firm master. I thought these guys were perfect for each other.

The beginning was a bit slow because quite a bit is about the 3 exchanging emails and Jackson looking up if puppy play is for him. But once they all meet, we got to the good parts.

This was sweet, slightly kinky, and overall adorable. With some hot sex scenes I might say.

Yep, that was 100% perfect. From the initial set up all the way through to the final scene, this story is beautifully crafted... M.A. Innes makes it look so easy!

I love a triad with two submissives and one Dom and these three men go so well together. When it’s just the initial pair of Sawyer and Cooper, the way Sawyer takes care of Cooper, even though it's not what turns him on the most? He’s doing what his partner needs, to take care of his family. Then the scene where Cooper steps up to do it for Sawyer 'just to be fair' - damn that’s sweet.

Bonus erotic moments: The way they play with their fantasy Master is so intimate, I love it.

As Jackson enters the picture, and they slowly add the idea of him into their scenes, it adds some serious spice and the anticipation builds - I could hardly wait for the three men to get started on the physical part of their relationship.

Level up: the extra *super sexy* accidental aspect.

For Jackson, the idea of exploring his more dominant side is appealing, and the more he learns about puppy play the more he wants to know. Though the whole thing basically lands in his lap, clearly the timing is perfect.

The primary focus of this episode in the trilogy is on building a foundation, establishing a bond, and making sure each man feels comfortable. Don’t get me wrong, the sexual tension builds, and is always part of the story, but the relationships take a front seat. M.A. Innes does a fantastic job building this triad and the dynamic between these three men really works for me. I can’t wait to start Master By Choice.

IMHO the best way to enjoy The Accidental Master is as an audiobook. It’s clear Kenneth Obi put some serious thought into the story, he gives each character a distinct personality and I love how his narration helps to build the anticipation. While some audiobook narrators simply read the book, Obi gives his all and always adds something extra… I promise, you’ll notice.

This was unexpectedly sweet - Cooper & Sawyer, two beautiful guys deeply in love with each other but needing a Dom to take control. By accident Jackson’s misleading “puppy training” ad catches their eye and an email / text friendship begins. After finally meeting Jackson realizes how much he adores Cooper & Sawyer and appreciates how different their sub needs are. I really would have loved more time with them as they built their relationship... it just finished too fast for me !

Review for the whole series. Kind of. For the first book, the beginning of the second and my decision-making process about abandoning the series.

I wasn’t sure about the puppy play part of this book, but I thought I could take it or leave it and I chose it anyway because I wanted to venture outside my comfort zone and try reading about a relationship between three men. While I like the idea in theory, it’s easy for the dynamics to feel unbalanced and to get too much focus on the relationship between two people with the other man left more on the sideline or there are jealousy issues or something else that doesn’t make it work for me.
I had a good feeling about this book, though, because it had a similar structure (two subs already in a relationship finding a master) to an MMF relationship I’ve read before and liked a lot. This one didn’t reach its potential, though.

I can’t really point out something I actively dislike, it was more average than anything else.
There’s a lot of puppy play talk but the actual play is pretty tame, which is a plus for me; if you’re expecting people eating dog food out of a bowl, don’t worry because there’s nothing like it. Not in this book at least, I can’t vouch for the rest of the series, but Cooper mostly likes running around chasing a ball and Sawyer cuddling and being petted.
The characters aren’t bad, although Jackson doesn’t seem very dominant to me and Cooper is a bit too much on the brat side for my taste. My favorite is definitely Sawyer, but I felt like the focus was mostly on Cooper and that wouldn’t necessarily be a problem if it was a temporary thing. Sawyer and Cooper move at different speeds and it makes sense that Jackson would adjust things accordingly and give Sawyer time to get used to the new situation while Cooper pushes ahead at full speed.
The problem is that I expected things to even out in the second book and at the beginning it didn’t feel like it was going to happen any time soon.

Cooper is still is exuberant self, meddling and pushing, and Jackson seems to follow while making sure Sawyer isn’t left behind. While things between Cooper and Jackson move along because Cooper wants it and Jackson is on board with it, it seems like every time Sawyer and Jackson make progress is because, and only because, Cooper puts things in motion.
It’s done in a very inclusive way, with Cooper talking to Sawyer about it and all, but it still feels like without Cooper there wouldn’t be much happening at all. And maybe it’s just because Cooper is the exuberant, sharing one, but it also seems like there isn’t much balance on the off-page things the two subs do separately with their master, with Sawyer learning things about Jackson because Cooper tells him what they talked about or did together but never the other way around. The stronger chemistry and bond seem to be between Jackson and Cooper with Sawyer worrying that it's too soon to get serious, although he wants it and despite Jackson and Sawyer being pretty great together, the rare times Cooper is pushed aside long enough to see what it could be like with a little more balance.

Like I said, it wouldn’t be that much of a problem if it was only at first, if a time was coming when there was some progress with Sawyer and Jackson taking the wheel (although, really, it should be Jackson, since he's supposed to be the Dom in the relationship), but reviews for the other two books point out that the focus is still pretty much on Cooper and Sawyer is still pretty much taken for granted.
Definitely not what I’m looking for.

Not quite 4 stars but better than just 3...

I LOVED the slow build up to intimacy, and that there was a concerted effort to make "couples" time in this triad.

And of course Kenneth Obi did an amazing job with the narration.

This was my first M.A. Innes book and I wasn't expecting so much adorable puppy cuteness. The only other puppy play I've read was part of one of my long-time favorite books, The Good Boy, which I first read in 2013. I'm not sure why it's taken me so long, but I'm glad that this was the story that brought me back into it. I was smiling most of the way through this one. It had a nice balance of story, romance and sex.

Cooper and Sawyer are a young couple that are looking for a more mature third who would be willing to be master to both their pups. They've been through a lot together and are willing to wait to find just the right person to complete their family. Cooper is an unrelenting optimist, full of energy. His personality matches the excitable pup he is. Sawyer is a worrier. He's quiet and thinks through things. His first priority is that Cooper not be hurt or get his expectations up too high when Jackson enters the picture.

Jackson (who is an actual dog trainer) is intrigued by the boys' emails and something calls to him about what they are looking for. He does his research and through texts and emails the three start talking about what they are looking for. This start of the relationship builds slowly, but it made sense between Sawyer's nature and Jackson's inexperience.

Once the men agree to meet up, things really start moving. Jackson is the perfect Master for the excitable Cooper and the more subdued Sawyer. He is also appreciative of their different needs outside of the play and makes time to connect with both of them. It does take a while for Jackson to actually meet one of the pups, but I loved the scenes once we got them.

I enjoyed so much of the story, even though things did ultimately go very smoothly and Jackson was almost too perfect. Luckily all the characters were engaging, the sex was hot and the story moved quickly. Not everything is wrapped up here, it's not a cliffie but is a "to be continued" and I'm looking forward to it.

Well, this was all sorts of adorable, sweet, and sexy, too! This is my first book dealing with puppy play, and it's not something I ever thought I'd really read about! It was interesting, and I felt like this book dealt with it in a realistic, serious way.

Cooper and Sawyer are a couple who are looking for a third - more specifically, a master who can be their dom and take control over their puppy play. They think they may have found their match in Jackson - whose sister "accidentally" posted an add for his K9 dog training in puppy play groups instead!

I love Jackson's hesitant interest in this, how he is attracted to them as people and is totally willing to see if domination and puppy play is something that would interest him. Although he's definitely out of his comfort zone, he's willing to listen to Cooper and Sawyer's needs and see if they match with his. And I LOVED Cooper! Ahhh he was adorable with his bounciness, his pep and positivity, and his sweetness. Sawyer is a bit more reserved, guards his feelings and thoughts, and they are a perfect balance for the other.

I do wish we had gotten to actually READ some of their texting conversations rather than just hearing about them, however. That was the one thing I felt like was missing.

Although it doesn't end on a scary cliffhanger, the story for this threesome is definitely not finished. Luckily, the next book comes out in a few weeks! Can't wait!

I'm really getting into this author's kink books. The characters and their experiences fit. Scenes flow seamlessly and there's never a rush to get to the finish line. In other words, the stories are really stories, not just an excuse to string a few sex scenes together.

Cooper and Sawyer are best friends who are into puppy play, each in his own way, but they haven't found a master yet. When they see Jackson's ad describing his (real) puppy training, they mistake it for an ad for a master looking for a pup and respond accordingly. Jackson is intrigued and can't get them off his mind so he reaches out and they begin a text and phone correspondence that builds to an in-person meeting and finally to several dates--together and separately.

Jackson seems a little too perfect for an "accidental" master who's never been into pup play but we'll see. The story gets better with each page and by the end there's a commitment to go further. Onward to book two, which I understand has a continuation of this threesome.

I read the kindle version of this book at the beginning of the year and adored it, so when an opportunity presented itself to listen to the audio version, I didn’t hesitate.
The story itself is so adorable but still pretty believable most of the time. Jackson, the accidental Master, takes to everything so well, that it is clear he is a natural. Sawyer just makes me want to hug him. He was very insecure sometimes, but he was always brave in his actions. And Cooper! Cooper was an absolute joy!
Kenneth Obi captured these characters perfectly. I was never confused about who was talking, which can sometimes be difficult in audio books with poly relationships. And his rendition of Cooper just made me adore him even more.
*full disclosure: An audio copy of The Accidental Master was provided to me for the purpose of my honest review.

This book is super sweet and cute. With the most loveable characters. The first part of a three book series. We get to see these men meet in unexpected circumstances when Jacksons dog training business advertisement gets mistaken for a kinkier version of "pup training". Sawyer and Cooper have already made a relationship together for the past few years but they are looking for a third. Someone who can be the stronger glue to help them find their way. Since they are both pups, what they really want is a master to care for them both together, equally. They end up finding that third in Jackson. Sawyer and Cooper are completely adorable, you can literally not help but fall in love with them. Once they learn to trust Jackson, and realize that he is there to stay they form the best connection together and have the hottest chemistry when the three finally get to that last step in their relationship together. Cooper is the sweetest, super excitable and bright like the sun. Sawyer compliments his personality perfectly. Jackson is the strength that can keep them both in line, but will make sure they both get what they need as well. The puppy aspect of the book is written really well. We get to see Jackson learning from scratch how he feels about pup play and being a master to two pups. This book is so sweet I cannot wait for the next few books.

Audio – Kenneth is the best narrator when it comes to super sweet and playful characters. He does a fantastic job with Cooper and Sawyers voices, keeping them separate but also keeping them fun light and playful compared to Jacksons deeper and rougher personality. I also think he did great with all three characters. I loved this book and cannot wait to get my hands and ears on the next two audiobooks.

A misplaced ad on Facebook for Puppy Training, made for a delightful story of a man who does not know that he is even looking for something but finding it anyway. The witty dialogue and the differences between Cooper and Sawyer’s personalities and how Jackson deals with each is absolutely priceless. I love how Kenneth Obi, the narrator, made the guys come to life.

This book was incredibly slow with tons of narration and mundane domestic scenes that started to bore me very quickly. The three characters all felt distinct and I could see them fitting well together, but since the book was so slow we barely got to actually see them all together. I also thought the puppy play would be a bigger part of the story, but while it's discussed a lot throughout the book there isn't actually much of it on-page.

To me this book didn't read as the first in a trilogy, it read as the first third of a single book but with a bloated word count. The sister was also one of my least favorite types of characters - meddling, nosy, manipulative and overstepping. I also have a pet peeve for when romance writers go meta and write about romance writers, which didn't really help things.

PUPS!! 🐶🐶...The human kind, not t the canine.
This was a very sweet intro to puppy play & dom-ing story.

I liked the characters—everyone was very distinct. I liked the pacing. I liked the scene with all three together—🔥🔥🔥

What I didn’t like:
Cooper was a bit much on the energy level.
A dog trainer who doesn’t own dogs?? Weird.
Nosey sister.
The voice Ken Obi chose for Cooper.

I think I would have enjoyed this much more had I read it. I have the whole collection on audiobook, but right now I don’t feel compelled to LISTEN to the next one. However, I do want to read it.

Note: no HFN/HEA here since this book only portrays the very early stages of the relationship between two submissive pups and their master.

My rec? A GREAT choice for those new to puppy play or for those who already love it!

This was a good read I don't get the whole puppy play, but this book was good. Jackson’s life gets turned upside down when his sister posts an ad for a puppy play book instead of his dog training business. Jackson begins getting all kinds of kinky emails he gets one from Sawyer and Cooper who are a couple looking for a master both of them are into puppy play with Sawyer being a submissive. This was a good read both Sawyer and Cooper have been through a lot and only have each other both of them were kicked out of there families Sawyer for being gay and Cooper for being gay and kinky. Jackson who is gay and an alpha male in bed always thought that he was vanilla but as he looks back on his past relationships he can see that he is dominate. I really liked his sister Melissa she writes erotica but won't share what kind with him. Jackson wants to take it slow with these two but Cooper who is the more playful of the two knows that he wants him. Sawyer was more cautious of the two he knew growing up that his father was going to kick him out so he worked and saved Sawyer wanted to submit to Jackson to not have to think about being in charge but he was afraid of being hurt and of Cooper being hurt. This was a good read I have read this author before this book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

It’s very slow burn and I didn’t realise it was part of a series when I picked it up so I was disappointed to not really see Sawyer as a puppy but I expect that’ll happen in future books more as their relationship gets more established. Really cute though! I liked the focus on open communication and moving at different speeds for the different guys. If you like pet play and two subs with one dom this might be for you!

I was super confused by Jackson. Early in the book it seemed like he was a 20 something rather than a 40 something. The inconsistency distracted me. Also I feel like Sawyer didn’t get enough attention from him. Sawyer didn’t seem to mind but I do. I just want to hug him.

Dog trainer Jackson has his ad mistaken for the kinkier version of dog training. Connor and Sawyer are pups looking training and a master.

I liked all of these characters right from the start.
It was fun watching them all get to know one another. I really enjoyed the getting to know you emails.

I loved everything about this book!! It had all the feels. It was hot and sexy but romantic too. I was able to connect with all of these men & was taken along for the ride as their relationship progressed.

Highly recommend!!

Puppy play isn’t my thing at all, but it also doesn’t completely tank a story for me and this one just looked too cute to pass up. And it was definitely cute, but for some reason just didn’t completely work for me. I think Cooper just came off way too young for me to really enjoy it.

Well done! Age-gap, mmm, BDSM and puppy-play. A story about two submissive, yet established couple, looking for the perfect third who will become their beloved master in a long term relationship.
There were lots of sweet moments, funny ones and lots of smex. Well developed characters with extreme personality difference, yet it worked so beautifully with this threesome. Cooper is the over active “energizer bunny”, where Sawyer is the careful, thoughtful, worry wart. Although this story is about the three of them coming together as a family, by the end of the book I felt it was really about Cooper finally finding contentment and feeling whole. I expect the next book will be more focused on Sawyer. I can’t wait to find out. Overall a great read.

I was excited after reading the summary.. but after i read 20% it kinda boring. Too much redundant expression in the sex scene, and definitely moodkiller.

I was hoping to learn about the lifestyle they tried to introduce to Jackson, but it just too long it feels like it’d never happened.. And when it did happen, I just got the Cooper’s pup side of the story. So cliffhanger with no explanation if there’s ever gonna be second book..

I feel like i've been in a bit of a slump with my reading lately so this was the perfect read. It was just super sweet and fun with no angst involved.

Jackson is a dog trainer who all of a sudden keeps getting strange, and kinky, emails from various men. It turns out his sister has made a mistake when she was putting his ad up and his business has been mistaken for a puppy play training center. As he's going through replying to the emails one from two young pups, Cooper and Sawyer, catches his eye. Jackson's always viewed himself as a rather vanilla man but as he begins looking further into puppy play and how it works he starts to realise he may not be so vanilla after all.

Cooper and Sawyer are a young couple who are both pups and on the search for a master for the both of them. They're struggling with finding a master willing to take on two pups together but they're determined to stay together. Cooper is an optimist, he's upbeat and excitable with his personality matching that of his pup. Sawyer is more realistic. He's hesitant with his first priority always being to make sure that Cooper is safe and doesn't get hurt. The two balance each other out so well.

The beginning of this is quite slow as it's all about them emailing each other and Jackson just beginning to look into puppy play. However, once we get into the story it gets good. I thought the kink here is really well done. Jackson takes time to look into every aspect and make sure it definitely is for him. He also takes the time to get to know both Cooper and Sawyer as individuals as well as who they are together. He's also well aware of how excitable Cooper's needs differ from subdued Sawyers.

Honestly I feel like this book was lacking in depth but it was sweet and sexy enough that it didn't bother me too much in this one. I liked the characters together and i'm looking forward to getting more of them in the next one.

This is soooo cute. Jackson was a dog trainer and because of some misunderstandings, he was swarmed with requests to train puppies in another way *wink*. Anyway, he was just rejecting and clarifying those numerous emails until he read one from Sawyer and Cooper.

I love the relationship dynamic between Sawyer and Cooper, childhood friends - turn- lovers, a lot of trust and honesty was embedded in their relationship despite how different they were. It wasn't touched in detail but they obviously went through a lot together since young. Their foundation was strong and sturdy but both were submissive so they were looking out to get a Master into their relationship.

Jackson was not an experienced master and was very new to the scene. Yet, undeniably, he was intrigued by the scene especially to care for Sawyer and Cooper. It surprised him on how non-vanilla he could be after understanding the role of Master in a puppy play relationship. And it worked out fine and great for all three of them. I love how he doesn't go in all "I know more, I am awesome, I am your Master". The way it worked was more of a learning journey and exploration with each other for the three of them.

MA Innes (Shaw Montgomery) has this way of creating these characters that are so ridiculously sweet and funny and adorable and perfect that you want to shrink them down and put them in your pocket, so you can keep them close forever and occasionally feed them chocolate chips and goldfish crackers. This book has three of those characters.

What do you get when you combine one sexy, hyper pup with one sweet and serious pup and add in a kind and beautiful Master who knows how best to love them both? Another one of MA Innes' compulsive page-turners!
