According to the author’s comments, this is the last Jesse McDermitt Caribbean Adventure novel. But I see on his website there are a whole lot more books starring Jesse, just moving in a different direction. And that is not necessarily a bad thing.
On the whole, this is not a bad book. I’d rank it as good as the best in the series.
However, Mr. Stinnett still has work to do to make these books better.
For one thing, he still insists on telling us every time Jesse takes a boat out that he put it up on plane. He does it 16 times here, and assuming he wrote it that many times in the previous books that’s over 150 times. Again, Mr. Stinnett, We. Get. It! We don’t need to be told it every time. It’s safe for you to assume that readers will understand that every time Jesse takes one of his boats out, he’ll put it up on plane.
There are also still too many characters with too many similar names (Stinnett favors ones beginning with C and J), so many that even after 10 books, I can’t keep them straight. And I still haven’t sorted to who does and doesn’t live on his island.
And finally, he still has some continuity problems. Two people get into a car and drive off. Two pages later the same two people pull up to a warehouse and each one gets out of a separate car.
Still, I liked this tale well enough that I’ll give one of his new direction books a try.
