Summerview Manor was a house with secrets. The disappearance of the original owner Theodore Phillips the Third was basically town legend. But Tabitha and her best friend Scott didn’t care. They’d wanted a place they could call home for as long as they could remember.
When they finally save up enough money to buy the old Victorian house, they thought the worst they’d have to deal with was roaches and sagging floorboards.
They couldn’t have been more wrong.
When a dusty gramophone turns a hard night of drinking into a quick slide through a portal into another realm, Tabitha thinks she might have solved the mystery of what happened to Theodore Phillips III. But will she and Scott be able to find their way home, or will their disappearance just become one more mystery for Summerview Manor?
Once Upon a...What? is a wild adventure through a magical world where the creatures are fantastical and shenanigans ensue.
I received this ARC by accident when applying for a different ARC. I didn't want to read it because I thought it wasn't my kind of book but after seeing all the positive reviews and recommendations I decided to give it a try. However, unfortunately, I was correct in assuming that I wouldn't like it.
It's almost like a second-grade adult version of Narnia. It's got the same concept. Tabitha and Scott find themselves transported into another world after a night of getting drunk and listening to old music at a new Manor they bought, then they try to find their way back home.
For a novel that is meant to be fantastical and adventurous there's barely any adventure. I would have expected more setting development and epic action. And also for the few fantasy elements in the book, I would have liked some good descriptive imagery. There was none of that.
Following on from there, I think the only thing I've taken away from this book is how many ways someone can make a sexual joke. Sexual humour a very big part of the book. And by big I mean big. Being in Tabitha's POV, all that's in her head is finding a sexual connection between everything she sees/hears.
The characters are also a problem. Scott and Tabitha are so similar the only difference between them would be their gender. There is no character development. And it seemed like their only goal was eyeing out the next person they could hook-up with. Not very memorable or charming in any way.
The writing also seemed very choppy. It went from completely humorous to very serious in a short amount of time. I'm not against some funny dialogue between intense scenes but it would have been better if there was some transition. I couldn't feel the suspense or emotion in any scene because the mood just jumped so quickly.
There was alot of diversity in the book which is a good thing. However, promoting some cultures and then shunning others just doesn't feel right. There was a whole part in the book that opposed Christian beliefs and religion and eventhough I'm not a Christian I can see how that could have been very offensive.
In conclusion, I don't really recommend this book unless you're into sexual humour and an extremely light read. I will not be reading any future books in this series.
*** I was sent this book in exchange for my honest review.***
In this story we follow Tabitha and Scott who just moved into a new house on the out skirts of town. As they celebrate this new life move they decided to use an old music player they found left by the previous owner and that's were the adventure begins.
So I just had an awesome time reading this book, I read it so quick as well (like two days which is fast for me okay?). This book gave me like wizard of Oz meets Alice in wonderland vibes which I found to be a great mix. The book was all well paced with a good amount of action and adventure throughout (might be why I read it so fast).
The book was also full of humor and fun banter between characters, which you don't see that much in magical books (at least I don't see). I liked the characters quite a bit and even felt like they reminded me of my friends or they could be my friends. Though I could predicted the ending it left me wanting more and I so can't wait for the next book in this series.
The only thing I didn't really love about this story was the lack of background for the house and Theo as a character. It left me a little bit confused about why things were happening, but i would hope we just get all that info in the coming books in this series.
This book is super funny and magical! Not to mention sassy and badassy ;) Would highly recommend if you're in the mood for a new realm, dragons, merepeople and Fae! And who isn't?
***BOOK REVIEW*** Once Upon A... What? by Katherine Henshaw (Once Upon A Trilogy #1)
I NEED THE NEXT BOOK NOW! I mean, yes I am a grown up with the ability to be patient… but seriously, give it to me NOW! Katherine Henshaw spins a tale of two best friends that are clearly best friends. They are connected on a level which you don’t often see authors being able to portray. The way they speak to each other, the way they act together, you can tell they are true friends and soul mates. I also love that there is no clear description of the main characters, that their looks are not the focus. It is perfectly done for those of us that like to reader insert as we read as the MC can look how we want them to look, opening up the opportunity for more diverse heroines. Speaking of diverse, I think it’s brilliant that the MC’s best friend is gay, and that through their journeys they meet a diverse range of people. The fact that this diverseness is barely dwelled on is a good message to the reader, that we shouldn’t dwell on it, that it is just a fact of life. This could have been written in a way similar to Lord of the Rings, but thank god it wasn't. I appreciate the way the author detailed the people, the places, the situations. I liked that there was comprehensive enough descriptions that still allowed me to use my imagination. Like J.K. Rowling did with Harry Potter or Leigh Bardugo did with Six of Crows, in my opinion. Once Upon A… What? Is diverse and witty and just this side of naughty and I love it. ★★★★★

Review: I thought this was a really quick and fun read! The characters were charming and the story was fun! The pacing was a bit fast, but it fit with the writing and story. The plot was sound and I really had fun reading this book!
However, I do think that the backstories could have been expanded on further in the book. I felt that the book didn't do so good at developing the characters as much as I would like and that the world might need a bit more development.
I received an ARC for this in exchange for an honest review. I had no idea what this book would be about but I was pleasantly surprised. It felt like reading Alice in Wonderland. Two best friends—Tabitha and Scott—moves in to a house that belonged to a man from the early 1900’s who mysteriously disappeared but that didn’t deter them from buying the Victorian house. The night they move in they find a gramophone and they start to listen to music. That same instant they are sucked through a portal into another realm. We follow their journey through this new world where they soon find out there are mythical creatures, lots of folklore and their trials and tribulations on getting back to where they came from. There’s so many things in this book that I wish was real on this earth. Like that tree!! Physically, it is a regular tree on the outside but inside it’s a whole room with built in fireplaces, a library, bedrooms and in different floors. They can definitely come in handy if I start traveling. There’s beautiful and descriptive scenic views. Flowers I want to take and start my own garden with. 😂 But omg that ending though!!! It’s killing me!! That damn huge cliffhanger! 😂😭😂😭. I can’t wait for book 2!!
ARC REVIEW IN ENGLISH AND SPANISH/RESEÑA EDICIÓN ANTICIPADA EN INGLÉS Y ESPAÑOL
ENGLISH REVIEW ___________________________________________________________ 4.5/5 I received this book from Ninetales Publishing for a Honest Review.
The story revolves around Tabby and Scott, who being best friends decide to move together to an old house in their city and for mysterious reasons end up in another world, so they must go through many things to return home. . . . I loved this book! From the beginning, the story takes a slow but steady pace, introducing us into this new world and, as the chapters went on, it became more and more interesting, to the point of not stopping reading. until i finished it all at once. The world that the author created is great and I loved the way she treated varied themes and complemented them in an excellent way.
Being a world with magic, there are many creatures that many of us associate with fantasy, as well as many mysteries that were slowly discovering the protagonists with the help of unexpected people.
With regard to the characters, I loved the complicity between Tabby and Scott, the strong mutual trust and friendship almost as if they were brothers but with the humor that characterizes each character was very entertaining and made me laugh (although I must say that because of the jargon – since I am not American – and the risqué that were some jokes I did not enjoy them).
I loved the development of each one, from the beginning they were well defined as well as their character and, as things went on, they kept their way of being and their friendship together with the knowledge of mutual strengths and weaknesses, made them they will support each other and manage to cope with each situation. The way in which the author managed to make feel the rawness of the feelings of both as well as their reaction to their new situation was very good and made the characters look more human and realistic than I expected.
One of the characters that surprised me was Theodore, although he had a bad start, he redeemed himself in the end, however I feel that there were many doubts about him and that they left me doubting his intentions.
In general, it was an excellent story that covers everything a little and that although it has one or another detail of emptiness in history - mostly because of the little that is known about this world -, I think it had a great development and a plot twist that left me wanting to read much more and hoping that my doubts will be clarified as well as deepening much more in this new universe in its continuation.
Highly recommended for all lovers of fantasy but not for those who do not like readings with sexual jokes.
RESEÑA EN ESPAÑOL ___________________________________________________________ 4.5/5 Recibí este libro de Ninetales Publishing para dar una Reseña Honesta. . . .
NOTE: A special thanks to Nine Tales Publishing for providing me with a free copy of this book for review! All opinions are my own.
Where to start with this book? I suppose I should start by saying that it has been a long time since I have read a book that truly captivated me from beginning to end. Even though I had other obligations in life that demanded attention, such as work and now school, I found myself going back to this book and wishing that I could binge-read it, since the story was utterly fascinating. That also does not account for the witty humor that this book contains, though I suppose I have to put this out there. Due to the fact that the humor is largely sexual in nature, I would not recommend this book to anyone under the age of eighteen. With that being said, the humor was still tastefully done, and I also appreciated how even though the book had undertones full of humor, it still managed to pull off a serious tone when the story demanded one. I especially loved how there was a little bit of diversity within the book, especially with how the main character's best friend was homosexual.
So then, you may be asking yourselves, why did I rate this book four stars instead of five?
Though the book was for the most part extremely enjoyable, there were a few parts that I found kind of unnatural and brought questions to my mind. The first is the sudden change in Theodore's character. Within the first half of the book, the reader is led to believe that such a character is unruly, pervy, and would not take no for an answer and as a consequence cannot be trusted. Then later on, his character does a complete one-eighty, and suddenly, he sheds his pervy and unruly nature as if he was a completely different person all along. The two sides of Theodore honestly did not add up to me, especially when he and Tabby develop a relationship further along in the book. Next, there was a part towards the end of the book that tried to convey a political message, and no offense to the author, but it read as if the author was trying way too hard to make her characters seem tolerant of differences and to showcase how diverse her world is. In my opinion, such a message would have been better if it was gradually implemented into the novel rather than suddenly thrown in there, especially since James' declaration of being trans all along seemingly came out of nowhere. Lastly, I would have appreciated a little bit more of an ending instead of just one word: "Fuck." However, the last thing is very minuscule, and I can see how that ending can work for some people with the kind of novel that this is.
Overall, I absolutely loved this book, and I am highly anticipating its sequel.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I would like to thank and for allowing me the chance to review this book before release. I was given an e-copy in exchange for an honest review.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! There were points within the story that I felt dragged a bit too much, but overall, great read! Henshaw did an amazing job bringing a unique story to life. She placed relatable characters, humor, and action into Once Upon A... What? that keeps the reader engaged.
This story follows Tabitha and her best friend, Scott. They decide to move into Summerview Manor, which was the house to Theodore Phillips the Third. Theodore disappeared and become the town legand. Due to the mystery, Tabitha and Scott were able to get a great deal on the manor. Once moved in, they take that night to engage in a little drunken fun. They find an old gramophone and that’s when they get swept away to another realm. They need to maneuver their way through this fairytale land in order to get back to their home.
This is what it would be like if you found yourself in a magical land that you thought only existed in books and movies. It takes modern day people, and sticks them in a land with dragons, rabbit men, and magical spells. As you follow Tabitha and Scott, everything is so relatable. Personally I don’t think they freaked out enough.
Henshaw really brings personality to all the characters and brings you into this magical world. The scenery was great and the descriptions really helped you picture this land and the creatures within the realm. The writing was also great. I loved the humor that was brought into the story. I found myself chuckling on multiple occasions. I look forward to the second book in the trilogy!
2.8/5 I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review which I’ve included below.
--
The strength of the story is undoubtedly the characters themselves. Both are wildly likeable, the dialogue between the protagonists especially snappy and engaging. Also of note is the purposeful inclusion of important themes such as feminism and lgbtq rights. The book isn’t scared of turning the traditional heterosexual, often misogynistic world of fantasy on its head. In this sense, it is a refreshing text.
Still, it is hard to recommend this text as anything other than a light, entertaining read.
The lack of worldbuilding is striking in this book. Main characters Tabby and Scott more or less trudge along in the world like whack-a-mole, one event popping up after the next without any cohesive thread to pull the story together.
Coupled with the lack of urgency, the plot feels whimsical and superfluous. One walks away with the sense that yes, the events made sense, but there was little to no propulsion or urgency to the story. Like a barely moving canoe down a flat river. What we are missing is the momentum of a rocket, a clear set of motivations that pulses throughout the story. The characters want adventure—why? What are they running to, or from? The characters desperately want to go home—why? What’s there that they desperately need to get back to? None of these questions are answered. They are left as half-baked assumptions that leave the reader feeling uneasy and unconvinced.
In short--if you are wanting substantial fantasy, this is not your book. If you're wanting a light, humorous read, this might work for you.
Wow what a fun story! I read this book for review and while looking at the cover I have to admit I was not expecting what I actually got. I am however glad because what a great story! It was like a fairytale but the adult version with sex, liquor, crude humor, curse words and pure fun! Tabitha and Scott are two best friends that buy a house together. They move into an old manor and are drinking to celebrate their first night. They find an old gramophone and start to play music off it thinking how funny it would be. The joke was on them because they were transported to a different world. There was no name for this world or realm but it was filled with all the typical fairytale stuff like giants, dragons, magic, flowers that smell like oven baked cookies, fairies, oracles and royalty with castles. The two embark on a fun filled adventure while trying to find their way back home. They make some new friends alone the way including Theodore and James which are two characters I have come to love. The writing in this book was great! The use of description was so rich that I could picture everything in my head so clearly throughout the whole journey and I found the use of todays language in this new realm so refreshing. This book was like nothing I have read before and I am now going to be impatiently awaiting book two! If you are looking for a fun adventure with some eccentric characters then please check this one out!
I received an ARC fo this in exchange for an honest review.
When I heard about this book, it caught my attention. Getting my hands on it and starting what I thought was going to be a great adventure, turned out to be just that. Following Tabitha and Scott throughout this realm trying to get home was hilarious and heart felt at the same time. We see Scott care for Tabitha as if she were his sister. And Tabitha supports and cherishes Scott in a way a mother should. I thought their friendship was sweet and the best of friendship.
Once I got further into the book, we start seeing more of Philip the Third and at first you get this side of him that is creepy and sometimes gross. But once Tabitha and Scott interact with him in the end, you see a better side of him. I really enjoyed the part where they where trying to cross the bridge, we saw him in a different light which made his character likable. I could not stop myself from laughing audibly loud when ever Scott took advantage of Philips and Tabithas attraction to each other.
I was laughing, and crying (towards the end) through out this whole book. I am so glad i was able to read this and I’m not sure how i’m going to survive not knowing what is going to happen next! I’m definitely experiencing a book hangover!
I received this ARC from Nine Tales Publishing and in exchange for an honest review.
Once Upon A... What? comes out TOMORROW and is the first book in the trilogy.
I really enjoyed the book and am excited to read the next installments. Told through Tabitha's eyes, we get to know the world as she does. I loved the characters and the way they took in the world and especially the dragon. And also the nod to Alice in Wonderland at the beginning.
This book touches on so many great things such as how far we've come with LGBT rights (and how far we still need to go) and that some women prefer pants. I did get annoyed by a few things: the insta-love, the unexplained retrieval of Mirror and Scott not trying magic.
Plot: Tabitha and her best friend Scott are celebrating buying their new house, which used to be home to Theodore Phillips the Third who disappeared mysteriously many years ago. Suddenly, they are teleported into another realm which they soon discover is completely different from anything they have seen. As they start their adventure to get back to their world, they will face dangers, weird creatures and maybe even discover what might have happened to Theodore.
The book should be Once Upon A... WHAT?! Cause it really left me with a WHATTTT. Love the book from the beginning to the end. It was like a while adventure. It was something captivating for me and whenever I read I don't want to put it down but I have to do because I have things to do. It was magical at the same time the characters all felt so real. Though I miss Alynah. Even when there are characters there for a short while I felt abit connected with them too. Being touch by the way they are so friendly (even though they jump to conclusion after a request from Tabby and how she dress). Some parts left me laughing too. The ending was kind of expected but still.. sad ): I really can't wait for the next book so that I can see what happen and entering another adventure of Scott and Tabby!
I received an eArc from NineTales Publishing and Katherine Henshaw (thank you!), but that in no way influences my review and opinion on this book.
You guys, I found my soulmate in literary form. I swear. I felt so deeply connected to these characters as they're just as obsessed with coffee (my motto in life is 'First I drink the coffee, then I do the thing'), they're just as raunchy, funny, and dirty-minded, and just as kind (well I'd like to think so anyway). And they like their booze just as much as I do as well, who am I kidding.
The book starts off at Summerview Manor where Tabitha and her fabulous gay best friend Scott start to celebrate buying their first new home. But it ain't just an ordinary house, as they learn when they're magically transported into a strange new realm.
The whole book will keep you on your toes rooting for these amazing characters. Prepare to guffaw and laugh out loud as those guys are damn funny. That kinda humour is right up my alley and I can't wait for the sequel!
This Alice-in-Wonderland-esque first novel was nothing I had ever read before, kind of like a fairytale for adults. It has magical creatures you grow to love. And dick jokes, you guys. Love me some dick..........jokes. So if you're kinda fussy about humour as such, I'm not sure it's your cuppa tae. But I still want everyone to read it as it's just brilliant. So if you're reading this contemplating whether to spend your coinz on this beaut, DO IT!
I really enjoyed this read and a lot more after Gillian gave me a warning on what to expect with the language and innuendos! So this book is for older people (I'd say 16+ based on the UK law on age thing) but the storyline was wonderful, and I loved the beginning on how the characters came to end up in a different world/dimension (I don't understand technical terms)! I'm gonna leave this Spoiler Free and end it here but I'm hoping to reread this soon as I'm reading quite a few books and a reread will help me distinguish quite a few details that I probably didn't pick up on the first time round 😂
I love that the writing is super easy to read. That the main characters are from present times and they travel to a different time and realm and are finding their quest so interesting yet taxing on the mind.
The MC's speak the way we do now, it makes them super relatable. Henshaw delves into world "issues" that are occurring now. In the other realm, it seems like some of these "issues" are not completely accepted but everyone is open-minded.
Tabby and Scott are so great. I love their friendship and how open they are with each other. They can't keep secrets and it reminds me of how me and my best friend are. I love how Theo is able to blend into this realm so easily, but so readily assumes that Tabby and Scott are not from the realm he has been living in for centuries.
Again, really great debut. I love the ending, except for that very very last bit. That bit killed me! But now, I have to read what happens next, cause like... what are they going to do now?
This book was adorable! I truly enjoyed this book and the adventure that went with it. I felt like I was with Tabitha and Scott the whole way. I felt lost a bit at first but they were lost too so I didn’t mind. I laughed out loud so much! I loved the magic and fairytale realm and all the descriptions with it. I really cannot wait to see where the story goes from here!
I absolutely enjoyed reading this book. It's a modern twist of two characters stuck in a fantasy world, and the writer creates hilarious situations. I couldn't shake the feeling that this would make a great movie - and that Ryan Reynolds should play Scott. All in all this is a great debut novel!
I was given an ARC of this in exchange for an honest review. I was so excited because this book’s premise was so intriguing.
I HAVE UPDATED MY REVIEW (I decided to reread the book because I think I rushed through it the first time.)
I loved the characters. Tabitha’s sass and her commentary throughout the book totally made me giggle on more than one occasion. I really loved her and Scott’s relationship and their banter.
Upon rereading, I noticed that some of the characters didn’t seem totally fleshed out. James seemed a little flat and I would have loved to get more info about him. I would have also really liked it if there was more detail given to describe the secondary characters and their motivation. For the most part, it didn’t come across for me.
I do have to say that one of my favourite parts about this book was how real it felt. I loved that Tabitha and Scott both doubted themselves. In many books, the character jumps in to the deep end without much thought. I really liked the realness of the characters by them questioning things.
This book was a good fast read. The world was magical and fun to visit, even for a short time. I think it’s definitely not for the young. I would say 16+ due to mature themes and language.
This was such a fun fantasy read. It was unexpected, funny, adventurous, and thrilling. It definitely kept me on the edge of my seat. I liked that I engaged the entire read. I wanted to know what was happening and if the characters would find their way home. Tabby and Scott are so awesome. They are determined to find their way back home, but can also find the humor in the situation. Their interactions were priceless and I think y’all are really going to enjoy this one! I can’t wait to read more of this magical trilogy!!
Rating: I give Once Upon A… What? 4 stars. It kept me engaged as a reader, was magical in so many ways, and left me wanting more from this series.
This reminds me a lot of The Land of Stories, but then for an older audience. I’m torn between being annoyed at that and excited to find out if it’s just as good!
