Its a great blend of scifi and noir. It never fully explain the origins of the main character so its a little bit confusing to what is happening. The art is ok.

I've been hearing good things about Mad Cave Studios and this series delivers on that. Sure we've got the shellshocked war veteran turned detective. But you've also got something on the isolation angle. When you realize those vials he's got close that allow him to communicate with his dead squad mates, it really goes into depth about his mental state. It goes into depth on how they provide feedback onto Aiden while he's on a case. Along with his own intelligence he makes a great detective. Unfortunately due to this and how he's not exactly a people person, he's not very popular either. In fact Aiden goes to mock a group therapy session by saying he still likes to drink. He also seems to have a troubled past that goes back to his childhood which seems to add up to his troubled mind. That's not even including how his only friend on the force might not even be real. The artwork sure does bring up the tense factors like the threats, including a deranged psychiatrist who has a private army who wants Aiden for her own personal reasons.

This book in no way lives up to any of its hype. Let’s put it that way.

Midnight Task Force was the first series I discovered from Mad Cave Studios. It was the series I was most looking forward to reading. It lived up to my expectations and I cant wait to read the next couple of issues.

Aidan McCormick is a former soldier who witnessed most of his unit being massacred. This leaves him with feelings of guilt along with a very severe case of PTSD. He is recruited by the Detroit police department due to his experience and intellect.

Flash forward to 2055 in a crime ridden Detroit where a serial killer titled "the flayer" has been killing random people in graphic ways. Aiden is sent to investigate. He reminds me of a cybernetic John Wick.

I loved the artwork, but found with the dark aesthetic, it was difficult to see on the panel. I was reading this comic without as much lighting as I normally would, but it still made the panels difficult to see.

Going back to the artwork, I felt it was bright and gritty. Those two words shouldn't go together, but that's how I felt with the art. I liked seeing the different panels featuring downtown or even the bright lights shining into Aidens apartment.

Overall, this series has a lot of potential to grow into a strong series. I think my main reasons for only giving it 4/5 stars would be the darkness of the art. I also wasnt a huge fan of how Aidan treats the women in this story. I suppose that's to add to the fact of how Aidans mental health isnt all there. Otherwise I thoroughly enjoyed the comic.

SPOILERS FROM HERE ON OUT:

I liked the reintroduction of Mia Mikenna as it seems like she and Aidan have history together. Her death wasnt shown in the beginning, so I figured she wasnt actually dead.

The attack on the Detroit police station was slightly underwhelming and I wished it would have taken a whole issue. I didn't really see what the Midnight Task Force was capable of.

The last couple pages are what really threw me. It seems that instead of a serial killer, there are several "flayers". They seem to be genetically modified to some degree? Aidan was kidnapped and now being held at this asylum where he may be experimented on? This comic turns into more of a sci fi story than a futuristic CSI comic and I'm here for it.

This was rough. Nothing adds up or is explained (probably because a 2nd volume was promised but never happened.) It's about a crusty Detroit police detective 30 years in the future. He was originally part of an elite military team and almost died. Now he's on the track of a serial killer. The book ends on a cliffhanger and leaves too many unanswered questions. Like I said, this one was rough. The art is just OK as well.
