The Righteous Rustler

Rate this book
Jed snarled and went for his gun. The cowpoke across the table went for his. The stranger drew and fired at the adversary across from him; he spun and fell, his six shooter never even clearing leather. Then the stranger swung the barrel of his Colt strongly to the right, to the left side of the Jed's face. He grunted and fell back.” Wherever Mason went, trouble seemed to follow. Maybe the sheriff was right, he was nothing but a drunk and he should just keep moving. But Mason was also a lawyer, and his first case was to defend a rancher accused of rustling. And all the evidence pointed to the rancher.Maybe he was just a drunk and a drifter. Or maybe the entreaties of an attractive widow were enough motivation for him to stay in Laramie, Wyoming. This is the first historical mystery featuring attorney-at-law Roland Mason. Will he be the upstanding citizen Edward Ivinson thinks he can be, or, as Sheriff N. K. Boswell believes, more trouble than he’s worth?

For honesty's sake, the author is an ooooollllllddddd friend of mine. This is a story with a drunkard lawyer as a hero. As the West was becoming civilized lawyers floated into towns and often from town to town. Sometimes they had to be their own private investigators as in this book. Roland Mason entered the town and did not make a good first impression but incidents occurred and he sort of redeemed himself.
There are a few grammatical and spelling errors but it seems I find them more often of late when reading books, either digitally or in physical form (the latter is really my preferred method.) And there may be a couple times when the dialect is strained. However, all in all, it is a really good read.
