Penned by the usually amazing James Robinson, but even his steering hand is not enough to create a captivating story, despite such a pretty awesome version of Wanda, after her being misused by so many creators previously. When magic died, Wanda's investigation took her down some strange paths which have now lead her to to position where she have to come to terms with her origin! This is the best rendition of Wanda, probably ever! 6 out of 12. I read the Marvel Comic books Scarlet Witch #11-15
This started strong but just kind of petered out, unfortunately. I have a sneaking suspicion the book was cancelled well before the end of Robinson’s intended story-arc. I wonder how it would have ended…
The series finally starts to come together as Wanda resolves things with her mother and fixes magic. However it all just kind of fizzles out at the end. You can tell Robinson had to wrap up things in a hurry and things are left open ended.
This is a fairly nice conclusion to Robinson's run on Scarlet Witch, but it ends a little too abruptly without tying up the loose ends; they cancelled it an issue or two too soon. She returns to her Romany roots and learns some of the answers she's been seeking from her mother, but the there's some inexplicable filler and then a cliffhanger and then it's over... The art is quite well rendered, as it was in the previous pair of books. I enjoyed it, but was a little let down at the same time... Excelsior...
[Read as single issues] I'm really going to miss this series. James Robinson brings it home with some final revelations about Wanda and Pietro's true parentage (it's not Magneto, and it sorts out that nasty High Evolutionary mess too) before bringing Wanda face to face with the true threat to witchcraft before bringing the series to a crescendo, using all of the previous issues' adventures to inform the finale.
This hasn't been a series of one-shots, it's a story told in fifteen parts, and I hope other writers treat Wanda with half as much care as Robinson has here. I think the only thing I dislike about this ending is the fact that the villain doesn't get quite the send-off I'd have liked, and I doubt he'll be picked up again unless Robinson does it himself.
Once again, the artwork is by a collection of gorgeous artists, including Leila De Luca, Annapaola Martello, Jonathan Marks, and Vanessa Del Ray (who returns for the final issue to close us off as she opened us).
Everyone raves over the Vision's most recent ongoing, which was noteably spectacular, but Scarlet Witch is just as good, if less cerebral.
Very good! I'M SO SAD!!! This series has unfortunately been cancelled! :( A real shame, cause honestly if I had to drop all the titles I collect and I had to only pick up one title, I would choose this if it was still ongoing! So as you can imagine this volume basically wraps up the series; it does this by more conventional means, as its one long story arc and not the series of one shots the other volumes were structured as! The story is very "hit you in the feels", as it deals with Wanda's mother but also wrapping up the whole witchcraft is unbalanced arc, that has been the main thing for this series! In the end I can't say much other then this is a really good volume, and overall probably one of my favorited comic series of all time, that I ever had the privilege of reading!
A stunning end to a mediocre series; I loved seeing Wanda finally achieve her goals. And Agatha! She was my favorite character on WandaVision and it was a joy to see her in here!
Scarlet Witch: The Final Hex By James Robinson (Writer) and a fuck ton of artists Published by Marvel, 2017
Synopsis: Wanda Maximoff travels to the hills of Serbia to discover her Romani roots.
Review: Reunion, that's the theme of the book. A reunion between lost family members, a reunion between teacher and apprentice. And most important of all, a reunion between mother and daughter, a revelation that brings more question than answers. This book has its moments but it really struggles of a solid villain, the only real villain that was interesting throughout the whole series was Declan Dane. We barely saw him after his issues and i wished he was the big bad. A generic magic kaiju is not emotionally interesting nor visually interesting. This did not feel like an end, more of a next chapter.
Star Rating = 3,25 stars out of 5 A decent book that could have been something special but it struggles out of the gates. A anthology book was not the best idea for dear Wanda. A cool concept but a real struggle to write.
FINALLY, we get what we deserved after coming this long way here. the epic ending of scarlet witch's journey. the magic is fixed, the mother is saved and Wanda the Avenger is back. except some minor problems I had with some parts of the drawings, the art was brilliant. the story hurries itself to be finished but can't blame, otherwise we had to have more issues then longer and longer series than we already have. the series didn't have a good start with the first volume, but the second one was so good that almost made it up for us, and this very last one is just what is expected from any superhero comic.
This was an immensely unsatisfying read. Wanda Maximoff continues her quest to find out what's wrong with magic, which intersects with her quest to track down her real mother and learn more about her parentage. She encounters the spirit of her dead mother several times, and each time she promises to reveal the truth to her daughter...next time, there just isn't time now, you see.
Wanda, along with the spirts of her mother and Agatha Harkness, take the witches' road to find their witch goddess and see what's causing these problems with magic. And again, even while traveling together on the witches' road, her mother says "not now" when asked to supply information. It's too dangerous along the trail, you see. She'll tell Wanda who her REAL father is after they get to the end of the road and deal with the problem.
They finally get to their goddess and learn that The whole thing feels like a giant tease, and I am left with the feeling that I read fifteen issues of wheel spinning that were a complete waste of my time.
The last chapter is a stand alone story that isn't a satisfying conclusion at all. Wanda helps exorcise a demon from a possessed boy in a rushed story that has very little connection to anything that's happened in the rest of the series. The weak connection this has is that at the end we see the Emerald Warlock, whom we've not seen since the first volume, . Then Wanda shows back up at Avengers Mansion, says her journey of self discovery is over (poor sales numbers), and she wants to be back on the team. And that's that.
The only good thing about this volume was the art--each issue was drawn by a different artist with varying styles, so it's wildly inconsistent, but at no point did I find any of it bad. It was all interesting to look at, though it was a little jarring how Wanda's costume would change from issue to issue based on the artist's preference, even though a new issue would start mere seconds after the previous one finished (allowing no time for costume changes).
A weak conclusion to an unremarkable series. I would not recommend wasting your time on this.
This is soo hard to rate because I liked it but also I'm disappointed?? I'm lowkey glad I decided to finish this run though! Wanda's characterization is great.
Things kind of come together- Wanda goes and finds people who knew her mother which leads her into going down the Witch's Road with her to save witchcraft from Chaos. This was all honestly so confusing but in that specific issue (#14) oh my god the colors were GORGEOUS. The art itself wasn't the best but the colors had me by the throat and I'm not getting over it anytime soon.
I liked how finally it felt like the story was coming together but also it still felt disjointed and confusing. There's so many layers to my confusion like everything in Wanda's complicated backstory and all the ways witchcraft and magic were used. But it was cool? Like I LOVE Wanda being in control and using her power to help people, while also learning more about her family.
The art still changes each issue and while it was good, some art was ugly and people looked awful. 💀 Plus while Wanda does have the same outfit the entire time, between issues it would change. Artist choice I guess but that and the overall style changing was still annoying.
Even after everything, it felt like there were tons of things not resolved or it was still building things up which is pretty disappointing. But funny enough I now wish there was more because I wouldn't mind reading tons more of Wanda just going around learning stuff and using her dope ass looking magic.
A, Agatha Harkness wraca do życia.
Despite how hard Marvel has tried the company has never managed the critical or commercial success DC has with Vertigo when it comes to mature supernatural/horror titles. The reason for that IMO, is that Vertigo has been a higher quality imprint. Yet, this is a title, while much more mainstream than most Vertigo, comes close to having a little of that Vertigo feel.
For the reader we get the payoff of a plot line that has been building, and that is Wanda's work of repairing witchcraft in the world. At the same time multiple subplots get their payoff, including one about Wanda's mother and a smaller one about Wanda's relationship with her brother.
By the time the end rolls around there are hints of what could have come if the series had not been canceled. A further exploration of other witches not seen before, this little bit by Robinson was much appreciated for the small exposure as to how the craft might work in Ireland, Japan, and Cuba, a new role for Agatha, and a foe's return.
Definitely recommended for those who enjoyed Robinson's run on Starman and Firearm, but not quite as personal, or outstanding as her Airboy work.
Wanda finally gets back to her mission of trying to fix witchcraft. She is finally reunited with her aunt who raised her after Wanda thinking she was dead. To stay in tune with reuniting, Wanda also gets to see her mother again and she tells her what she must do, back to the witches road. The trio, Wanda, her mom and Agatha find who has been hurting witchcraft and take it down. This series started of really boring with volume 1, got a tad better with volume two and now ends with a decent final volume. Not the best series.
i'm so mad that this wanda solo series was cancelled because right now she IS marvel. if you're a fan of wandavision you can see a lot of elements from this run that were used in show (they are subtle, but still enough to connect the dots) and hopefully with wanda now finally getting respect she deserves (strongest avenger, ladies and gents, and don't you forget it!), marvel will realize they need to put out new wanda solo comic.
This series was seemingly cancelled on issue #15. I'm really sad to see it go if it really is cancelled. I binge read the entire series so I can't necessarily separate this review into individual trades, but I loved this series in its entirety. Learning about Scarlet Witch's past and the little one-and-done stories really made me enjoy this series.
The problems this series created for Wanda - witchcraft broken, soell-use ageing her - are fixed, and she returns to the Avengers. So what was the point of the journey? Well, her origin has been firmed up, until the next time it gets fiddled with; she's definitely not Magneto's kid, instead owing her powers to inheritance and/or the High Evolutionary, because why not leave it a bit confused anyway? Also, the Evolutionary's intervention in the Yugoslav civil wars... I'm not inherently against that sort of use of real world horrors, but it needs to feel thorough and earned, which this really doesn't. Witchcraft now apparently has some kind of colour link, but it has to be fancy colours - scarlet or coral, not red and pink - presumably so it feels less like a Green Lantern rip-off. And we get some cosmic stuff which doesn't really match any of the established Marvel cosmic stuff, and for which - as with Mother Panic - Shawn Crystal really isn't an obvious fit. But then, this volume is generally a let-down artwise, which is a shame when that was the only reason I even made it this far. Even someone of the calibre of Leila del Duca gets little to work with, and produces surprisingly dull and sparse pages as a result.
So the tale has come to an end. We started our journey as the Scarlet Witch traveled the globe, atoning for her sins, and trying to restore witchcraft from the chaos that was taking it. Through this journey, Wanda has become stronger, more self assured; she has faced her past; she has learned about her true mother. This is an incredible story that delves deeply into Wanda Maximoff's life. I could not ask for a more interesting and compelling series. The Final Hex is an exciting battle for truth, love, and justice, the final culmination of all that has led up to this moment.
Perhaps Scarlet Witch is not perfect. There are a bit too many deus ex machinas for my taste. Still, it is a fantastic story about a wonderful superhero. Wanda Maximoff is an inspiring person with an amazing soul. If I could be half the hero that she is I would be proud of myself. I know this series is over, but I can't wait to read more about her. I definitely am going to have to find out where her story continues next. We still need to find out the secret about her damn father!
Wanda Maximoff could kick my ass and I would thank her.
What a stunning series conclusion! I'm so sad that it's over, and I wish it had been a little longer - you could tell that a bunch of the loose ends had to be wrapped up pretty quickly - but it was so wonderful.
I'm still pretty mad that they've decided to take one of the most powerful Jewish women in fiction and say "psych!! That's not who she really is." and then just drop it, as if Wanda wouldn't even be considering her Jewish identity after that.
4 stars is my rating for the whole series. The art was breath taking and they handled wandas growth and past brilliantly and I loved her connection to her romani heritage which the mcu annoyingly neglects. I did think the ending was a little rushed but enjoyed this series very much
