SPOILED The capture of an arms dealer’s spoiled lover should’ve been a win for the humans struggling to survive their harsh lives in the slums. Powerless and outnumbered, it seems like only a matter of time before Romulus betrays the Butcher. But when Kieran realizes their prisoner is none other than his stepbrother, he has to face the harsh truths he’s been avoiding for too long. Torn between loyalty for his new family of humans and the witch he has more than brotherly feelings for, Kieran must make a decision that could leave him with nothing.
ANTICIPATION Kieran has been able to avoid meeting his stepbrother's notorious lover for five months, but the Butcher always gets what the Butcher wants. Forced to meet the man of his nightmares, he expects to get hell for being in love with Romulus... but he might just like it.
[Anticipation takes place 5 months after Spoiled. It contains consensual mature content such as BDSM, edging, and MMM.]
Asymmetry, Spoiled* & Anticipation*, the Need Trilogy, the Tamed & Trained Trilogy**, the Fate of the Fallen series, and Gifts can all be read separately from each other. Though they are all set in the same universe and there is occasional crossover, the timeline is ambiguous and there are minimal spoilers across the books.
R. Phoenix has an unhealthy fascination with contrasts: light and dark, heroes and villains, order and chaos. She believes that love can corrupt and power can redeem. Her muse is a sadomasochistic slave driver who thinks it's terribly amusing to give her the best ideas when she just got comfortable and warm in bed, and she passes on that torture to her readers. She also tries entirely too hard to be funny, and she mercilessly inflicts her terrible sense of humor upon anyone who speaks to her. She'd love it if you'd say hello!
I don't think there're any winners in this war and unfortunately for Kieran nothing is black-and-white. I do feel bad for Kieran and Romulus, who are stuck on opposing sides, but they need to think about the other side’s perspective. It hits Kieran especially hard as he has to rethink everything. Romulus, on the other hand, I can't get a handle on. I do think he is far too clever and sneaky. They both make my heart hurt and even though they'd hate it, I want to give them lots and lots of hugs. Together, they truly are beautiful disasters. Their love for each is painful and wonderful, and I really enjoyed the tension that constantly exists between them. This story kept me on my toes as I had one hand gripping the sofa wondering what was going to happen next, and I’m so happy I don’t have to wait to read Anticipation.
Anticipation
Wow 🤩 this story left me breathless and wanting more in the best way. Romi and Kier are already smoking hot but when you add in a sexy dominating Frenchman who likes to test boundaries, I’m surprised my Kindle didn’t overheat. These three have something special and we‘ve only tapped the surface. I can only anticipate how magnificent they’ll be after more time together. R Phoenix and Morgan Noel blew me away.
I don't think I would have been able to give this a 4 if the books hadn't been packaged together. Separately, they each would have been a 3 and 2.5.
Book 1 delivers on obvious brotherly love between the two MC's but only one seems to be truly IN love. Even with the second book, where MC2's Dom seems to bridge the sexual kink between Romi & Kieran, the story seems incomplete. And MC2 still seems to only be in love with how much the other MC truly loves him.
The ending seems more like the climax and leaves unclear how the dynamic between the 3 will proceed or even if the two MC's will ever be able to make a life together- which ultimately is the central conflict for the brothers stuck between opposing sides. Perhaps a third book could actually resolve things one way or the other- can Kieran & Romi bridge the sexual and societal gaps between them? Is Able intended to live up to his name, and make it possible for the brothers to find a HEA? As he's written now, Able seems flat, and with how central his existence is to the story, that seems unjust. It's a copout to leave this unfinishd as simple erotica when the writers have built a setting & characters ripe for so much more.
