I didn’t expect any literary masterpiece here. In fact, my expectations were rock bottom. And they were fulfilled. The book just reminded me of why I loath these empty biographies and business books. Outside of a few sections where the ghost author described Sagan’s insights into what was happening on track, it was unreadable. Still, I gritted my teeth and made it to the finish line.

If you know (or care) who Peter Sagan is, you'll probably enjoy this book. If you've been following him for years - which means you follow bike racing - you'll enjoy the reminiscence and the periodic insights; if you're a serious Sagan fan, you really ought to read it.

If you're not a cycling fan (and you've never heard of Sagan) ... before you close the review ... if you want just a taste of why Peter Sagan (a mere bicycle racer) is such a popular, iconic, larger-than-life figure in the world of cycling (and sport), just check out this brilliant advertisement for Specialized's electric bicycle. It's classic Sagan. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-eQ2... Alas, neither the backstory to the ad - nor the ad itself - is mentioned in the book.

Having said that, while the book is a fast, fun, entertaining, read (for Sagan fans), this is by no means the first book about professional cycling racing one would/should start with. For that, I think most folks would recommend something more along the lines of Tim Krabbe's The Rider, or Joe Parkin's A Dog in A Hat, or, I dunno, or, before his career imploded in scandal, something by or about Lance Armstrong (but that's a story for another day)...

As for the Sagan story, Sagan (obviously) is a freak of nature - one of the most powerful, successful, and resilient riders of his generation. He achieved success early, generated a large following (due to his out-sized personality), and kept on winning. But the hook for this book - and (currently) his historical claim to fame - is that he won the world cycling (UCI) Championship road race three years in a row, something that hadn't been done before.

Reviewer's personal note/bias: I've been an unapologetic Sagan fan since early in his career, but, more relevant to the book, I was lucky enough to attend - and thus watch unfold (over 6 1/4 hours, yup, it's a long race, with 10 laps of a 16 mile circuit..., yup, that 160+ miles) - the first one - and here's my photo of Sagan sitting up as he approaches the finish line of the 2015 UCI World Championships in Richmond (winning his first of three consecutive rainbow jerseys).
https://images.gr-assets.com/photos/1...

As a result, the book is loosely (and I mean loosely) organized around the three years that Sagan won the World Championship. Against that backdrop, innumerable short chapters introduce you to other aspects of his life and career. For this reader, the best - and definitely the most endearing - thing about the book is that, arguably, it's a 300-page thank-you note and love letter to all of the people who make him successful - in his word, "Team Peter." (This is no surprise. Sagan fans know that his brother, Juraj, has raced at his side for years.)

For an active (busy) athlete's autobiography - and one from someone who has been racing professionally since he was a teenager (in other words, it's safe to assume Sagan has no "higher education") - the book reads extremely well ... which, of course, suggests assistance or a ghost writer ... my understanding is it was John Deering ... who, sadly, does not seem to have received appropriate credit (at least to my mind). Having read innumerable interviews of Sagan over the years, Deering did a nice (or, should I say, convincing) job making the book read in Sagan's "voice." Anyway, why not put the ghost-writer's name on the cover? It seems fair/right/appropriate to me, ... but I digress.

A nice feature (and hope for the future): I bought/read the book on Kindle, and - as an early adopter and long-time Kindle reader, I've been frustrated with Kindle versions of books where I care about the photos, drawings, and (particularly for military history) maps. This book's photo section was (not only lengthy, but) easy to access, clear, and easy to expand (at least on my phone version of my Kindle - on my Kindle Voyage, not so much).

People don't watch bike races just to find out the result. If that was the case, they would just read the paper in the morning or check their phones. Fans want drama. And if you can't make the effort to give them something to shout about when you're wearing the rainbow jersey, well, frankly, you shouldn't be wearing it. People often ask if I feel the pressure of the jersey. Well, I feel the jersey, it's true, but it's not a pressure. It's a responsibility to entertain.

That's why I love cycling.

Deering so Saganom nebol v nepretržitom osobnom kontakte a knihu napísal na základe telefonátov, čo v niektorých častiach cítiť.

Sagan tiež otvorene rozpráva o konfliktoch v tíme a o bláznivej povahe ruského oligarchu.

Ide o najsilnejšie časti, v ktorých dopodrobna opisuje trojo pretekov, v ktorých získal dúhový dres – Richmond 2015, Dauha 2016 a Bergen 2017.

It's a good read for all cycling fans, especially for those who have been following Peter Sagan (like me). The ghost writer did a good job writing the book in a 'not so cycling nerdy' language but still managed to capture the exciting atmosphere of the front of the peloton or the chase/sprint at the races which Peter Sagan participated from 2010 to 2018.
The book tells us how Peter Sagan won 3 world championships, how he loves riding in Australia (Down Under race) and California (Tour of California), his strategy in a sprint group to win the race. It also tells us his people: his manager, his assistant, his wife, his boss at Tinkoff team (Oleg, what a character). It also tell the crash at the Tour in 2017 which got him kicked out of the race from his perspective.
While reading a book I can't help but making a comparison between Peter and Phil Gaimon, an ex-pro cyclist who wrote 'Pro Cycling on $10 a day'. Phil's book is a story of a commoner who tried to make it in professional cycling world with all the hardship such as getting by with $10/day, which makes you wonder if it's worth it to reach to 'pro' level. Peter's book is a story of a prodigy, a king in pro cycling world, which his physical, fitness easily brought him to the super star level at very young age (20). He has his own team, he calls it 'Peter team' including his brother (a cyclist), his manager, his assistant. When he signs with new pro team, they have to take in the whole 'Peter team'. He works for no team. Anywhere he goes, teammates help him to win race, not the other way around. He eats at upscale restaurants, vacations on yacht, etc. His life is a life of a celebrity, which is understandable.
In the book he credits his mom for his good behaviors off the bike, which makes me chuckle as I remember that one time when he pinched a podium girl. Was that on or off the bike?

I like the guy. I am a fan. But this book is very disapointing if you are a fan and cyclist who keeps up with the cycling world...Because apart from few bright moments like new gossips from races and cycling politics this book has not much to offer...at least for me. Bought the paper book & i should have downloaded the ebook. I wouldnt read it again.

Peter is een 'what you see, is what you get' mens.

Bedankt, Harper Collins Holland.

Barely 4 stars... Since I'm an avid cyclist and love Tour de France (TDF). As a standard book, only 3 stars. If you like watching TDF and want to hear a recap of many of the great years Sagan wore the Green sprinters jersey, then you'll enjoy the book. Sagan talks about his youth and entry into cycling, and shares stories from his early years as a pro. Then concludes with many ongoing stories about TDF. Definitely a fun read to re-live some of his great moments and sprints. Quick and easy read.

...
Spisovateľ (nie Sagan), sem tam zasiahne do deja umeleckými prostriedkami a dovolím si povedať, že to pôsobí dosť v kontrastne s jednoduchým Saganovym rozprávaním:

"Nedaleko Dolného Kubína sa nad meandrom rieky Orava týči príkra vápencová skala."
Alebo
"Pidlikajúc do dreva svoj zárezik tou staručkou čepeľou...., Katarína mrzuto pozerala na hodinky, až by jej vlasy neobeleli ako tie svadobné šaty".
...

I am a cyclist and a huge fan of the sport in general. I have always struggled with Peter Sagan and his antics so I decided to check this book out and hopefully see another side and come around to an understanding of why everyone seems to love him. Well...this book only confirmed my initial thoughts of him. He is a great cyclist and one of the absolute best around, but a complete self serving moron. Anyone that tattoos their own face on their body is just that. I also became so sick of hearing the saying, “why so serious?” Anyway...this great talent and amazing cyclist needs to learn to just stay quiet and become more of an introvert because he is beyond obnoxious.

A really fun read. If you are a cycling fan, this is a great one to get you through some winter season blues. The book is Peter's perspective on the three seasons of winning the UCI World Road Championships with side chapters on his childhood, family, and the makings of his personal support crew of friends, Team Peter. It gives insight into how he functions with a race team a what works for him. He definitely has a different approach to things than other riders and works with team directors and owners differently, but his methods work.

I was not expecting for him to say so many good things about Oleg Tinkov. After having a bad start to the 2015 season and Tinkov pushing him to win everything I assumed there was more animosity. His first statement on his time with Tinkoff is, "Oleg Tinkov is a funny bastard in so many ways." I also didn't expect him to be so open about his personal disappointment with so many missed wins early in the season. In press conferences, when asked about how he felt with taking another 2nd place, he would say things like, 'Well, there are a lot of other riders that didn't get 2nd.' Shows that Peter, as usual, isn't always telling you everything when he responds to the press.

Good to see that he doesn't shy away from discussing the incident with Cav in 2017 Tour de France, and throughout, he doesn't strive to raise any controversy.

The best part of the book may be the Epilogue, where he recounts his win of the 2018 Paris-Roubaix.

If one of the most elite cyclists in the world can carry the motto of, 'Why so serious?', maybe we all can relax a bit. And it might help us do better.

Sagan - a kto to taki?
Kto to?

I received this book as a holiday gift from my husband’s aunt out in California. She and I have a similar passion for professional road cycling (and I’ve been trying to make it out to visit her for the Tour of California for several years now…alas…it has never quite worked out). I fell in love with the sport in 2010 when I moved to Charlotte, NC. My uncle has loved it for years and is an avid amateur cyclist, himself. He showed me my first stage of Le Tour de France and took me to my first spin class. A couple of years ago I finally purchased my first real road bike and boy did I put it to good use. I’ve yet to ride a race or with a group, but I love the thrill of it. In order to truly appreciate the sport, you have to fully comprehend just how much cyclists put their bodies through. My husband (lover of American football and hockey) will disagree with me, but I fully believe that cyclists are some of the world’s most elite athletes. They constantly push their bodies past breaking points; they test physical, mental, technological, and emotional limits; they hurt themselves on agonizing race days and pick themselves up to do it all over again the next morning; they ride with broken limbs and shoulders and even backs. This is not just a sport or a passion: this is their life. There’s no true lengthy off-season for them unless they decide to remove themselves from the sport entirely because there’s almost always a race somewhere around the world or some sort of different training or conditioning to be done. This leads me to one of my favorite riders: Peter Sagan of Slovakia. He’s a three-time UCI World Champion. He’s won stage after stage of Le Tour de France, taken home the Green Jersey for sprint points on several occasions, and won a significant number of other races and accolades. He’s a jokester, one of the most entertaining (and exciting!) riders to watch in this sport, and he’s also one of the most decorated. Not to mention he’s my age – it blows my mind that he’s accomplished all of this before the age of thirty. When I heard Sagan was putting out a book detailing his unprecedented sequence of years in the revered Rainbow Jersey, I couldn’t wait to read it. I was even more excited when I realized that there was no co-author. When I began reading, I could hear Sagan’s sense of humor and passion – notes of which I’ve witnessed in various interviews and the like over the years.

I knew what I thought was a fair amount about Sagan from my years of watching him ride the Grand Tours. What I didn’t know was just how he’d struggled in his early years and how much he and his brother (also a professional cyclist worth his own salt) owed to their dedicated father. They grew up in a country with little to no support for a youth cycling circuit. When faced against other European countries, theirs looked like a ragtag bunch. Still, Sagan persevered and knew that he loved the sport and he could be damn good at it.

We get to witness a side of professional racing that isn’t often covered in media: the behind the scenes with the politics of owning, forming, and running a team, coupled with attempting to decide just who would be the “leader.” (For those of you who aren’t big cycling fans it may be strange to know that cycling is BOTH an individual and a team sport AT THE SAME TIME. Teammates will sacrifice themselves to get their leader or sprinter into a good position for points or a stage win, but there are instances where the plans may change if someone else has a clearly better shot. Sagan details all of this in a much better way than I ever could. If you’re ever curious, I highly recommend watching a few stages of Le Tour this year – the commentary is usually excellent and very beginner-friendly.) For the most part, teams are comprised of riders from all over the world. There are language barriers, culture differences, and clashing egos. The same goes for the support staff (the sometimes dozens of people who train, manage, transport, support, etc. the riders). This can lead to some volatile situations and difficult decisions. I found this insight to be particularly interesting coming from Sagan’s point of view. He manages to delve deeply into this hidden side of the professional cycling world while still maintaining his happy persona. Not once does he attack anyone and, in fact, he seems to like (or at least respect) just about every single person he discusses. I was especially impressed with his views on other riders. He remained very diplomatic and had something complimentary about every single rider he mentioned – even Cavendish. Those of you who do watch the sport will know all about Sagan’s controversial expulsion from Le Tour de France a few years ago after a sprint collision between Sagan and another well-known sprinter from the Isle of Man, Cavendish. I encourage you to look up the footage (it shouldn’t be too hard to find). I had my own personal opinions on the incident, but I was extremely excited to read Sagan’s point of view. His take was straightforward and, to my surprise, he wasn’t bitter toward Cavendish at all (I’ll leave my personal opinions about this out). I found it extremely admirable – especially when the media and frustrated cycling teams/fans definitely made an enormous deal out of the situation (and they’re not wrong).

I feel like this review has strayed a bit from a review of a book and more into an account of my love for cycling and how impressed I am with Sagan. What this really boils down to are the facts that I enjoyed reading this book, I loved all the insight and personal jokes, and I had a lot of fun seeing a more personal side of a very, very popular cyclist. This book humanized him and made me even more impressed with the man and athlete that he is. There really are a hundred stories in a hundred-man road race and Sagan makes it very clear that these are just his own experiences, his own time in the saddle.

Parts of the book do jump around a bit, though they do, for the most part, circle back fairly well. It reads less like a structured nonfiction book and more like a stream of consciousness in which there’s somehow an underlying tie-in to it all in each chapter, you just may not see it yet. I feel the included pictures were a great touch for a book written by a man with as much vivacity, humor, and tenacity as Sagan.

If you’re a lover of cycling, then this is a must-read. You get some very interesting personal stories and glimpses into the ins and outs of the sport. It’s fairly quick and easy to read because it rings of Sagan’s easygoing attitude. It definitely doesn’t take itself too seriously (read the book and you’ll get the inside joke there). If you know nothing about cycling or have some vague notions, then there are probably some terms or races you’ll have to research and the structure of the sport may be a bit beyond you; however, I have faith that Sagan’s personality will help draw you in and, perhaps, even make you a fan of cycling, too. This book is clearly not written by a professional author, but I think that makes it pretty charming.

Peter Sagan is an incredible bike rider, athlete, role model, but most importantly a hell of a human being. I love his take on life, how to live it, and the love he shows to everyone involved around him, personal, professional, or otherwise. The book is written and a cool conversational tone and I loved it. Reading about Peter, I would have it no other way. What an incredible achivement in cycling to be 3X World Champion and winning classic races in between. The guy is hilarious, insightful, and poignant. Its a fantastic read on an awesome individual.

This book is exactly what you would expect from 3times world champion. Interesting insights intro Team Peter, Oleg Tinkov or cycling marketing "machinery", but if you are looking forward for some gossips, intrigues on competitors or anything similar, you will be dissapointed. As the cover says, in book are highlighted mainly UCI Wold championships, Monuments and Tour de France from 2015 until spring 2018, casually enmeshed with views on his childhood, junior years, Slovakia or family

An interesting read detailing the emotional and physical challenges of one of the elite bicyclists of our time. The reader nations insight not only into racing and training but the family and personal relationships that lead to the photo finishes day after day and week after week. Sagan fans in particular will enjoy reading this book.

I enjoyed the detailed descriptions of the races he did line Paris-Roubaix or World Championships. Not sure if people outside of cycling are going to enjoy it though.
