Marie Johnston is an award-winning, best-selling paranormal and contemporary romance writer. She grew up in the upper Midwest and planned to go to college for English. Didn't happen. She started college in accounting and was awful! Grabbing her inner science geek by the pocket protector, she changed to microbiology and medical technology where her only writing involved scientific articles and procedures. Eventually, she left full-time work for full-time baby raising but kept thinking, "one day, I'd like to write a book." Finally, before any more time passed, Marie decided to buckle down and write. She loves it!
Since there's loads of reviews. I'll skip my usual summary and get straight onto my thoughts and opinions. This started well. And I was set up for a 'normal everyday' shifter romance. But it became more. A lot more maybe too much really. But then I'm not sure how long this series will be. There’s a lot of characters and information here to the extent where I felt it lost the romance. There's some interesting characters. If this series was on kindle unlimited I might consider continuing on. I didn't like it enough to buy the individual books especially when it could be a long run. While and it keeps up a quick, almost frantic pace at times. I'm always wary and have been caught out in the past. After a couple of books they tend to get repetitive and then I regret starting. Obviously I don't know this is heading that way but there's a strong chance. To summarise: This is more than just a shifter romance. Having said that it's a story we've read before. Which follows the usual lines. In cases like this it's the characters which keep us reading. This has some interesting ones. It ends well and everything's set up ready for the next book 'Primal Claim' which features Mercury. For me there was too much crammed into too little. This book needed to be longer really for it to fully work for me. It didn't grab me enough to make me want to continue.
I'm not sure how to review this book without gushing like a fangirl. The characters were fleshed out and felt so real, like I could sit down and have a chat with them. Jace was simply adorable, Alpha without being asshole. Now I'll freely admit, I love psycho men, it's a failing, I know. But wow, Jace was great. And Cassie, damn! I rarely feel like gushing over a female character. Usually they're just there, you know? Nope, not Cassie. She was smart, thought things through logically, accepted that shifters were physically stronger than her and let them do their thing. And when they had a misunderstanding, she was like "You are damn well gonna listen to me!" *sigh* Total girl crush.
So umm, excuse me while I read the next book. I need to read about Mercury, and it's waiting for me on my Kindle.
This was an AWESOME story, exciting, hot and yummy! Full of gorgeous werewolves and one awesome heroine. Sad thing is, it would've easily been a 4.5 had the editing been better. As an indie, I know the struggles of editing and I'll always ignore it if it's only here and there, but this was pretty pervasive thoroughout. It def says something though, that even with the editing issues I was totally hooked.
I want Bennett's story, like yesterday! On to the next, very soon. :)
This story had tons of potential, it just missed the mark with me.
➼ shifter wolves who were being hunted by Sigma, a force that seemed to be headed up by vampires ➼ fated mates, although I wasn't really feeling the love from Cassie. She was a hard one to like. ➼ a cool plot surrounding the Sigma org. I want to know more. They recruit humans, wolves, etc. And who is the mysterious Agent X and her backstory (which was hinted at). Will she eventually be on the side of good? ➼ the lore, the family-feel of the Guardians, etc.
I'll probably give the next book a chance to see where the story goes.
There was very little I liked about this book and the characters played a major factor in why I didn't enjoy it. Kaitlyn is terrible, the worst friend you could ever have. She's immature and irresponsible. She left with a guy for sex when her best friend had just been dumped by her would have been husband and was supposed to be her ride home. Some friend that is. When she got mixed up in a bad situation, Cassie dropped what she was doing and ran to help her.
I was a little turned off at how fast Cassie and Jace jumped in bed. One minute they're leaving the club and the next he's already pounding into her. The way it was written, it felt more like a porn scene and it wasn't sexy in any way it cheapened their "relationship" if you could call it that.
Everyone got on my nerves in this book. The only one I did like was Jace. He was patient, loyal, and too forgiving if you ask me. I'm sad that he got stuck with Cassie for the rest of his life. After they get captured, Cassie shows her selfish side more and more when she makes everything about her and doesn't give any thought to Jace. They're both in sexual frustration and yet HER discomfort is all that matters. She can't keep a calm head to analyze the situation and she's supposed to be the doctor here? Sorry, that makes me laugh. He gets her off to help her get some relief while she offers nothing in return to help him. She mouths off hurtful things without any concern to his feelings and not bothering to explain herself so he understands why she said it in the first place. Then she has the nerve to wonder why he takes off and ignores her after she's ok when she's done nothing but reject him and insult their mating at every turn. Even though it was not the right way, she didn't have to blatantly put it the way she did so callously and causing him confusion and hurt.
Kaitlyn was a selfish slut. The Guardians were a group of arrogant dicks. Cassie was an ungrateful, judgemental bitch. Jace's mother and sister were an pitiful disgrace as his family. The wolves of his own kind turned their backs on a man who protected his sister when they would have done the same thing to someone who threatened their family. I can't recommend this but I'm going to try to get through the rest in the series so I can say I gave each one a fair chance.
Jace is working as a bartender when he first notices Cassie coming in with her fiance. Jace knows that Cassie is his mate and waits patiently until Cassie and her fiance break things off. Cassie already had the hots for the cute bartender so when he offers to bring her home and help her forget about her ex, she agrees. The next morning is a bit awkward but to make matters worst, her best friend calls her for help and she rushes off to find her but Jace comes along with her because he knows there's more going on than Cassie realizes. Things really amp up at this point and Cassie and Jace find themselves in a lot of danger.
Poor Cassie finds out that shifters exist and that she just spent the night with one of them but she takes everything that's thrown at her really well. Jace on the other hand has a lot thrown at him as well and does his best to keep her safe, keep his emotions in check and not scare her away with the possessiveness he feels, it's not easy with everything that happens to them and there's a lot. The action was great, the storyline is wonderful and really kept me entertained, wanting to know what would happen next.
In this story most of the shifters are the good guys while the vampires are the bad guys and then there are hunters who want to kill shifters. This makes for a really dangerous world for Cassie to be thrust into but she takes it pretty well.
This is the first book in the series so we get a lot of info to set up this world which was fine with me. I thought this was a good book to start a series and I'm sure I'll be reading more of this series in the future.
Short story, with a lot of common tropes. H is a wolf who used his powers to control the fiancé of the h. Her engagement now broken, the H has a chance to claim her as his mate. She's human, likes him and is completely unaware that the girl she met in foster care is also wolf. There are guardians, evil shifters, vampires with odd names - X and Madam G. It read like a cartoon, and I really disliked the wishy washy judgemental heroine. My 2nd read was DNF.
3.5 stars. Parts of this book I really liked and other parts not as much. Jace was a great H. He was kind, loving, and PATIENT!! At times I liked Cassie and others I just thought she was a condescending bitch. I get that she just found out there were shifters and vampires out there and that's tough to swallow. But her real reason for acting the way she did were her own hang ups. Jace explained his past to her and he was honestly a good and honorable man. She still always threw shit in his face. Overall I do like the world that's being built and I will read the next story as I think it's about Mercury. I really want Bennet's story and hope that Cassie's bff Kaitlyn gets her story too.
So DNFing this at 70 %. Not because it was particularly bad, but because I was simply bored as fuck.
The author wasn’t able to make me like ONE single thing in here and get invested or the story at least in SOME kind of way. The characters were either shitty, selfish or manipulative and I disliked every single one of them. The premise was super interesting - a fated pair, where she struggles with the whole thing and doesn’t fall into his arms right away. Well. Basically she does, but then distances herself, uses him for getting herself of and sending him away like trash, cause you know “fear of commitment”. Sure, sure, but orgasms first, right? But that seems to be kinda the norm here - using shitty half assed excuses for asshole behaviour. Her “best friend” Kaitlyn leaves her to drink alone on the day she gets dumped, right before her wedding and then leaving her alone and drunk in a bar with a stranger, so she - Kaitlyn - can get laid. Later this is kinda “explained away” with her being a wolf and urges and shit like that, as if that would make it ok to be an asshole. If the author would have been able to really explain and characterize this behaviour to me, it would have been relatable perhaps, but in the way it is done it’s just unlike able, she just couldn’t pull it of.
Not to mention the part where the TSTL heroine gets a call from Kaitlyn, who tells her, two men are dead and she DOESN’T CALL THE POLICE, BUT DRIVES THERE WITH HER ONS, you know, because he said so. The police wouldn’t be able to help. With dead persons, blood and an hysterical woman.sure, sure, sure. Why not?
It was all just exhausting up to that point, I was bored as hell and I just wasn’t invested enough to continue. This one was not for me.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Jace is a bartender and a werewolf (shifter). Cassie is a psychologist. After recently getting jilted by her fiancé, Grant, Cassie decides to get drunk at the Moonlight Bar. Jace has been watching Cassie on the nights she comes into the bar. Cassie is his mate but she doesn't know it. An evil woman known as Madame G wants a mating pair. Cassie and Jace will do just fine. Can they fight free of Madame G's machinations? Will love have a chance to grow between species?
I found this novella rushed. Keeping track of which character's actions were described was confusing. It required backtracking sentences to clarify said actions. Adult language and explicit sex.
Nicely done variation on 'fated mates' and 'feisty heroine meets super hot alpha male'. The crisp narrative and engaging characters lifted this above the pack.
Such a great read for the first book in a series! I am very interested in seeing what else the author has written. Great paranormal romance with hot spots!
Free kindle read. It was actually better than I expected. There are definitely things borrowed from main stream UF/PNR series books. It was a quick and steamy read.
I was provided a complimentary copy of this book. I am voluntarily providing an honest review in which all opinions are fully my own. I am not being compensated in any way.

My Review: ✰✰✰⭒
I was sort of fascinated by the cover of this book every time I went past it in my Kindle app on my tablet. It uses that blue that always catches my eye and it has the most gorgeous male body covering the rest of the cover. What’s not to catch the eye! But it’s the eyes that really did it. His eyes are done as if they are almost white! In the story, they are really a pale blue though.
So, I was really expecting a lot from this book. It didn’t deliver that much, unfortunately, but it was okay. The storyline was really good. The characters were moderately well developed, but the book left me wanting to know a whole lot more about them. Answers that I don’t think I’m going to get in the following books. The overarching theme is the problems with the Sigma guys and each couple’s story is complete in each book, I think. So the questions I have about Cassie’s background won’t be answered most likely. We’ll see.
There was a lot of action in the book. There isn’t a ton of description, but you know what’s going on and who’s who for the most part. One of the characters really seems to straddle the line and you’re not sure if she can be trusted. I have to wonder if she shows up in the next book because they discuss her a bit after the rescue. She could be an interesting character, Alex AKA Agent X.
There’s not just violence. There’s some really hot sex, too. Jace and Cassie do find the time to hook up before they have to answer the call for help, and they have all night to do it. Now Jace just has to wonder if Cassie can accept all the aspects of his shifter world and whether or not she’ll choose to stay with him. The sex was the only aspect of the book that got “in-depth” treatment – sorry, really bad pun. But I felt the book overall was a bit on the lightweight side. I really liked the characters and the concept, so I guess I’ll be reading more in this series to see what happens next.
I'm a little torn with this book - I may wind up coming back and changing my review. The first half of the book I was not all that interested in, but I kept going because both Jace and Cassie are really likeable characters. Its rare in romance that both MC's are likeable. I love that Cassie is smart and gives as good as she get ( that scene with Bennett was my FAVORITE). I also like that she's not argumentative for the sake of it. That being said, it turned into this whole other story. I didn't NOT like this book, but I'm not super driven to keep reading the series.... The only character I'm interested in reading more about is Bennett.
This was my first shifter book. That being said, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I absolutely loved this story. This story was steamy, intense, and suspenseful. The characters draw you in, and you will instantly fall in love with the two main characters. Even the side characters are something truly fantastic. This story is fast paced, but definitely unforgettable. This story really won me over towards a genre that I always assumed I wouldn’t like. I was so wrong. I’m hooked, and I can wait to get absorbed in more books just like this one. I’m looking forward to reading more of this genre, and most importantly, this author!
This was different than a normal fated mate shifter romance. It wasn't as steamy as I normally see them being and it wasn't detailed enough for me to really connect well with either character. But it was a good read nonetheless. I think this is a spin off series and if I had read the previous series first I might have a better feeling or understand what was really going on, but it felt like I was missing part of the world building process so couldn't give it 5 stars. It was well-written though and had very few errors, so if you have read the previous series you will probably love it!
I’ve never read anything by this author and I was really impressed. Book is well written, definitely keeps your interest, and has characters you’ll fall in love with. If your looking for your next book boyfriend you’ll find him here! Lol if not Jace there’s a whole mix of alpha shifters to choose from. I’ll definitely be reading the next one!
A super fun first installment of a paranormal romance involving shifters. At its base, but finds the girl of his dreams but she is engaged. But she gets dumped and so he can finally made with her for life... And then explain that to her, get her to live him, and avoid a group that is trying to kill shifters.
Got sex, realistic for the genre, not overly fkuffy, and overall leaves you ready for the next book. Really good, considering the first book was free on Kindle. Would pay for the next installment as author plans. Definitely one of the best free books I've grabbed.
Fever Claim by Marie Johnston took me on a journey surrounded by shifters, vampires and a psychotic villain. This is my first time reading the author's work and it was an interesting experience. This the first book in The Sigma Menace series left me eager to dive deeper into the world the author created.
Stories featuring paranormal beings fascinate me, hence my reason for picking up Fever Claim. I went into the story expecting an exciting and interesting read. It delivered one hundred percent on the interesting part but it could have come with a little more excitement. The story introduces readers to Jace, an ex-con, bartender and wolf shifter and Cassie a human. At the beginning of the story we see Cassie, a psychiatrist nursing a broken heart after her fiancée called off their wedding.
Now Cassie is a regular at the bar where Jace works and he knows she is his mate. So he was happy to know that she and her fiancée were no longer together. He knows she has drank too much so he offered to carry her home. She accepted the offer thinking what better way to get over ex than to hook up with the sexy bartender she secretly admired.
The next morning after a night of passion she received a frantic phone call from her best friend seeking help. With the assistance of Jace she went searching for her friend, only to make a life altering discovery. She found herself plunged into a world of shifters and vampires.
Cassie adapted well to discovering that Jace was wolf shifter. Her initial reaction was typical of what one would expect discovering that paranormal beings existed. But then has she gradually began to accept it, both she and Jace got caught up in dangerous situation involving a psychotic vampire. This aspect of the story will keep readers on the edge of their seats.
Jace and Cassie's relationship developed at the pace one has come to expect from paranormal romances and it also came with its share of challenges and complications. The characters piqued my interest and they along with Jace and Cassie's treacherous situation kept me reading. The story ended on a good note in terms of Jace an Cassie's relationship. However, there are a lot of unanswered questions regarding the villain and her motives.
This is a new author for me and I picked it up as a freebie so thought why not. It was an ok start to a new series but there was a lot of things going on. Not always a bad thing but if not pulled off well then it lets the book down, it just seemed a bit short and rushed at times. It chopped and changed a fair amount so that you almost forgot who the romance was about!! The main characters seemed to get a little lost or forgotten. Jace was an ok H and Cassie at times was a tad annoying, her BFF Kaitlyn was not a nice person but her behaviour was explained away by the whole shifter thing, meh! Lots of other characters who you would assume will eventually get their own books as the series pregresses. A few minor editing issues but overall an ok read, not in any hurry to continue with the series.
What a first book! Really I can't believe this is Marie Johnston's first novel! The flow is well done and the pace is just perfect.
The story of Jace and Cassie is full of intense longing, borderline erotica sex scenes, and tender passion that make this a truly memorable shifter romance novel.
Cassie is a professional psychologist and very good at reading people, except she's unexpectedly dumped by her rather boring fiance and hooks up with hot bartender Jace without knowing that he is a wolf shifter who fully intends her to be his mate. There is some hint to the mystery of her past that may prove to be a bit more exciting and maybe supernatural than she is aware of.
In this first book we are introduced to many characters, including the evil Sigma gang who appear to be led by a madwoman who may be a vampire and something darker. the Guardians are Sigma's natural enemies and are fellow shifters though Jace is not part of the team, being a former convict.
The novel ends just where you want it to and though it is a complete story it fully leaves you wanting more.
I recommend this to paranormal romance lovers, you will not be disappointed!
The novel started off good, but there were a few things that bothered me, hence only 3 stars. First, Cassie's reaction to finding out about werewolves was really unrealistic to me. She doesn't even bat an eye! I think if I was her I would have been incredibly shocked and try to deny it or be really scared. She just kind of rolls with it which was very strange. The timing was off in the novel as well. It is fairly action-packed but it happens in moments when I wish it didn't. I also felt like the author had to supplement in other characters because Cassie and Jace couldn't hold their own for an entire novel. I was definitely more interested in her best friend's story than with Cassie herself.
The plot was also followed the same old formats....secret society, werewolves vs. vampires and it reminded me a lot of Black Dagger Brotherhood (but isn't as good).
I am not sure if I want to read the rest of this series...undecided at this point!
Also, one last thing...that cover. Bleh. Just terrible. If this novel wasn't free, I wouldn't have touched that cover with a ten-foot pole. Don't writers realize that "tribal" tattoos are SO LAME and SO 90s?!?
I stumbled upon this new series and as per my usual, started reading the series out of order...*sigh*... As a lot of new shifter stories go, this one appears to follow that road with the usual storyline of finding a mate. Wolf shifter Jace Miller finds human Dr. Cassie Stockwell and of course there are sparks, bumps in the road, misunderstandings, misgivings and mistrust. Cassie is cautious of the sexy shifter bartender and attempts to steer clear of him. When her fiance unceremoniously dumps her, Cassie and her best friend Kaitlyn go out for a night on the town to drown her sorrows and Jace, who has been pining for Cassie for months, makes his move. Things progress and Jace and Cassie wind up at her house enjoying each other's company. A shocking call from Kaitlyn the next morning sets Jace and Cassie on their date with destiny and the mysterious Madam G, Agent X and Agent D. Enjoyable read however the editing is atrocious. Missing words and prepositions plague this book. The characters, especially Madam G and Agent X, need much better definition. On my Were Scale of Hotness, 3 stars.
This was better than a typical shifter romance. There wasn't too much sex. The main characters were genuinely interesting and reasonable. Emotional and complex issues were discussed. I did skim over a couple chapters written from the villain's point of view. I never enjoy reading that in any novel. I also felt the setup was too complex for me. Typos: "payback" used as a verb, 'you're' written for 'your,' some punctuation wrongly placed, 'move' accidentally written for 'moving.'
