The war has finally begun and the duty of fighting it has fallen to Sean. Now if only he could convince the rest of the world that there really is a war on and it isn't just another 'art installation' at Burning Man. Maybe then he could get some help. Fronting the costs of a war isn't cheap, and while Sean may be making money hand over fist, he's spending it twice as fast. If he doesn't get help soon, the lack of money, food, and supplies will kill him faster than any demon.
Then there's the demons themselves. What comes out of the gates at times seems almost as random as the gates themselves. Some of the groups are obviously coordinated and very well trained making Sean's job of stopping them a hard one. As the gates are getting larger with time until the main one opens, Sean will find his resources and his people being stretched farther and thinner as the immortal demon lords bring their massive armies to bear.
Because humans are food to the demons and the larder is now very full, and they don't intend to leave this time until they've eaten every last one.

I'm new to the Harem / LitRPG thing (If I'd known more about LitRPG when I wrote Shadow, I might have incorporated more elements of that into it). I have a FT job, so I work on this when I can. Hopefully the next one will be even better. https://stryvant.blogspot.com/
This story is completely about he fight with the demons. No more releasing the lycans or fighting with the magic users. There really isn't much conflict with the government anymore either. It is demon fight after demon fight right from the beginning. I have heard that there may only be 2 more books in the series so I am very interested in how it turns out. This is still a good series but I do miss the early part of the story when he was finding his women and coming up with new ideas. At this point all his wives are giving birth and all he seems to do is fight and not discover anymore.
3 to 3.5 stars, pretty much the same as the other books. if you liked them you should like this one. I did like the ending in this one but it is just a setup for the next book.
As usual I just binge read the entire book immediately after buying it.please don't stop writing this series anytime soo. I understand wanting to try different styles that you have many more stories to share and I'll definitely tag along for the ride but I have become very invested in these people and there world so I really hope that you'll continue to share more stories of them. I also really like Michael Scott-Earle but haven't been able to find any of his novels on Amazon.
Ok the author did a awesome job in sucking me into the book. I enjoyed it so much I read it in 1 sitting. The action was fast and we'll paced the characters are interesting and fun in the series.
Demon Days (The Valens Legacy Book 12) picks up from where the previous book stopped. One of the dangers of such a large series of book is diminished quality of the books the longer the series goes. So far Jan Stryvant has produced excellent books. Some books of the Valens Legacy are better than others Demon Days being one of the better books (IMHO YMMV).
With the demon war starting Sean is busy so Demon Days has lots of action which makes it a quick read. I enjoyed how Sean divided his wives between those that he takes in the field with him (Roxy, Cali, etc.) and those that he leaves behind to mind the household. One of the benefits of multiple wives is dividing up the housework with more people. Sean takes advantage of his wife’s skills placing them where they will do the most good.
With six wives and two mistresses all delivering babies within a few months of each other Sean will be a busy husband. With so many birthdays, so close together the household budget is going to get hammered. Thankfully Deidre the first mistress is a competent bookkeeper and would budget accordingly.
I love it when Sean does the “mystical lion excrement” commanding the Lycans. It makes for an interesting plot twist when you have basically minor gods running around. I enjoyed how the wives realized that they needed not only a strong leader, but also a figure head. Sean has become the face of the demon war, losing him causes a chain of command problem Roxy quickly tackles.
It’s a shame that Sean missed the birth of several of his children. I missed the birth of my second daughter because I was deployed so I know how much that sucks. I liked how Roxy had pictures of all of the children not just hers. I also like how Roxy mentioned that the wives are the mothers of all of the children. I grew up with several children from polygamous marriages (lots of fundamental Mormons where I grew up) and the children viewed every mother as theirs no matter if she gave birth to them or not. Getting permission to play outside from two or three women was difficult enough, I can’t imagine getting permission from six to eight mothers.
I hope that Sean recognizes the sacrifice of the wolves that followed him through the gate giving their lives for him. Unlike lions the wolves don’t get to come back reincarnated in a new body.
Sawyer hinted at Jo’s darker past. Perhaps when she returned from training in Asia she went a bit loopy and took her frustration and anger out on some poor saps. I hope that we get to see some of the darker aspects of this hinted Jo past. Perhaps Stryvant will write another Wife Story featuring a solo Jo. I would like to know more about how Roxy and Jo met and when did they become lovers.
I also wonder if perhaps Roxy was the one who helped Jo deal with the issues caused by her lack of traditional magic. I wouldn’t blame Jo if she took her anger out on a few of the people who caused her grief after all, these are the same individuals who expected Jo to suicide.
I wonder if the First will reconnect with Sean. It must be a relief for Sean to be alone in his head for the first time in a while.
I found the first gate locations in Demon Days a little too convenient. Why would the demons open gates in largely uninhabited BFE northern Nevada? It did seem as if the demons had some control (or knowledge) of gate location. I felt the plot a little too railroaded with Stryvant placing the gates near Sean’s forces. The demons should have opened gates in downtown L.A., New York or any other major city.
Other gates are briefly mentioned but I wonder if there are gates in Asia? Demons dropping in major Asian cities such as Mumbai, Shanghai, Tokyo (where’s Godzilla when they need him?), Hong Kong, etc. would make interesting plot twists but not relevant to the plot. Stryvant did a good job keeping the plot moving without bogging down in useless back story.
I was glad to see Sean planning for loss of cities such as Reno. I wonder why though the government hasn’t gone for the nuclear option? Tossing a few nuclear tipped cruise missiles through a gate a few minutes before it closes would be an interesting situation. Chad realizes that the government might panic if too many demons are massing at a gate and drop a nuke.
Demon Days ends on a good cliff hanger. I am looking forward to the next Valens Legacy book.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This was probably the best book in the Valens Legacy series thus far so I thought I’d take a moment to explore not only what I liked about this book, but the series as a whole up to this point. This book stops screwing around and goes heavy on the action, much of which is well done. (As a side note, there was also less of the pointless sex—pointless because it didn’t advance the plot or develop the characters.) The demons are now coming through the gates, and Sean and his lycanthrope army have to fight them. These are pretty good scenes as are the interludes between them in which tactics, strategy and logistics are discussed. There is a tiny amount of politics also which enhances the story. Typically, Sean and his people do manage to show an amazing amount of stupidity in not pursuing as their number one priority the mystery surrounding why a certain type of old ammunition injures demons when modern ammunition does not (I guess they’d rather fight man-to-man with swords than mow the enemy down with helicopter-mounted machine guns) but in the scheme of things, this was a small complaint.
Stryvant also sets up a demon subplot that worked out just the way I thought it would without actually getting there by the means I foresaw. That was also nicely done. The ending has me quite anxious for the next book, which hasn’t happened in a while, and that was the deciding factor in lifting this book to a four star rating.
As to the series as a whole, I feel that this second arc has not been as strong as the first arc but has still been enjoyable. I think the primary weakness in recent books comes from the extreme ease with which Sean has solved most of the problems. Note that this latest book presented a challenge he could not easily resolve and it greatly enhanced my enjoyment. My biggest continuing complaint with the series is that twelve books in, becoming a lycanthrope is still like putting on a suit of clothes. Occasionally reference is made to this lycanthrope type being stronger or faster, but I never “feel’ the lycanthropy. Lycanthropes even talk to their beasts once in a while, but it all seems way too friendly and rational to me. In my opinion, the best lycanthrope stories have the beast released in a painful transformation that overwhelms the human’s rational mind and makes them a monster. Strong willed humans learn to control the beast to some extent, but they still have to fight against the beasts’ hungers and passions. Lycanthropy is a curse! But not in the Valens Legacy. There it’s more like a great new jacket you found at the store that you can put on or take off at will with no downside whatsoever. I’d very much like a result of this demon war to be that the beasts inside the lycanthropes begin to be break free making all of these characters far more interesting.
Actually 3.75 Stars. I cannot believe that I am on book 12 of a series that on paper sounds as crazy as can be. But, I am. And for the most part - enjoying it immensely. This is a series that you have to take with a grain of salt. Take away all of your preconceived notions of what is acceptable - and while you're at it - throw away all common sense and that should put you in the right frame of mind! Honestly though, I am enjoying this series. There is an overall story arc and you cannot help but fall in love with the MC Sean - a former nerd, now WereLion, a shifter God and a sorcerer to boot. This is not a standalone book, to really get the most of the series, you really need to start at book 1 and go from there to understand the nuances and the relationships and boy are there a lot - relationships that is. Sean has 6 wives, 2 mistresses and just had his first round of kids. See...when that is put in writing it sounds absolutely crazy, but the author is able to make it work, and not only does it work, but it works well. And...it's funny. A very light and easy quick read that leaves you feeling better for having read it. That is not to say that it is all flowers and bunnies, there is also quite a bit of suspense and intrigue. See- hard to believe...but true.
Why the lower rating then? Well, this book did not seem to advance the story arc enough and honestly, this was probably one of the books that I liked the least. This does not in any way take away from the series. We all have books that we like and do not like more than others - this one falls in the "meh, could have been better" category. But- I'm still looking forward to book 13.
Okay- I'm done. Who knew I could find this many words to talk about a book that wasn't my favorite in a series that sounds like a wacky story told by someone on drugs....isn't it great to be a book reader - life is so full of tons of unexpected pleasures :)
This is a combination review of the entire 17+ book series as I binged the entire The Valens Legacy over the about a month.
The Positives: - The writing is really good. Often when I binge an author things like their crutch words become constant irritants that didn't happen here. - Stryvant doesn't mess around. The plot never really stops or meanders, each story having important events that carry the narrative forward. - There's two maybe three arcs in this series but each flow one into another smoothly so it all seams like a natural progression. - All the arcs are entertaining and engaging I always wanted to know what would happen next or figure out the mystery. - The Main character rides the line of being a Gary Stu never really crosses that line. - Functional magic system and cohesive world.
The Negatives: - The pervasive fetish portions. Even during serious portions Stryvant will often break my immersion with sexual talk or fetishes. - Repetitive sex and romance. It does get better later in the series, but since Stryvant's fetishes don't change over the course of the book neither do these scenes. I started skipping them, but he'd often stick important plot points in the middle of them. - The women characters tend to be on the bland side and over sexualized.
If a book could be a cliff hanger, this would be it.
Good book. As far as writing goes it is a very good easy read. As far as storytelling goes, there are a couple issues. One, overly hinting that demons are flammable, but none of the super experiance military officers bring up in incendiaries. Napalm, willy p, incendiary ammo (he may have been hinting at it). Secondly, he has started using a Shakespearean plot device. Where the climax is in the second act (half way). Not hating on Shakespeare or anything, but the implementation here in written format is not coming off well. Instead of a good falling action and resolution, the author is jumping straight into the next raising action. It leaves the reader (namely me) feeling unresolved and unfulfilled. It comes off as lazy writing. Your story should be good enough without cliff hangers to get us to come back. I mean we get it. You want us to read the next book, but seriously, we are 12 books in! We aren't going anywhere.
This is one of the better books in the series. I liked that normal people are finally being exposed to the shifters and a few other groups, but it should have been more overt than the incidental introduction.
The whole ruining a man's life because he's a jerk was a little over the top. Yeah, Captain Mueller was unprofessional, but what they did to him was wrong; With his personality, he would have been doomed to staying a captain for the rest of his career. A better solution would have been to get him reassigned to the front lines so he can see the truth up close and possibly change or to simply have him transferred to some place out of the way.
If the mundane fire at Burning Man could kill the djevels, why not just lob mortars through the gates (or hell, a nuke on a cruise missile) and arm up with incendiary rounds and flame throwers? Douse the area with napalm and then light it up when they're all formed up.
Keeps. Getting. Better. Just when you think the Lions know all, and our Hero has solved all the problems a big lesson is learned. Like the best guided D&D games, this is no Monty Hall, it's a slug fest that engages your mind, soul, and emotions. This episode goes from modern day world-building, to entirely alien and strange worlds intersecting in strange and deadly ways. Will Sean science his way out of this? Or will his magic save Mana? Will his sword fighting win the day? Who is the mysterious stranger? Everything wants to kill him, will the Braun one be his personal doom Silver, Iron, Steel, and fur. Stay tuned, and pick up where the last book left off, until you put this one down panting for more.
The war has started and Stryvant keeps the story moving as Sean makes new friends and kills demons
This was a very exciting read and it introduces a lot more about the lore of the setting. There is plenty of screen time for his lovely wives and thousands of dead djevels. If you've made it this far, you've got to read this book, but he warned that it feels a lot like part A and will leave you eager for the next book. If you don't like cliffhangers designed to leave you guessing or pulling out your hair, relax. Stryvant doesn't play any mind games here, just keeps the story going past the end of this book.
Great series. One of the FEW harem style series I have enjoyed. Awesome story and world building. Each wife has her own distinct personality. What makes this series worth reading is that the world is unique. The characters are not cardboard cutouts. You actually get involved, whis is uncommon in the harem sub genre of the Gamelit / litRPG genre. There is an active sense of urgency to issues, and enough humor to keep you laughing. I highly recommend this series.
Another great ook for the series. The time line issue with the gateways is interesting and I like the surprise in the oenderworld. My only gripe is the jump in time from gates starting to open to in the middle of a large gate appearance and most of his wives have already given birth. I know you can't go into too much detail at this point, but I feel like we missed out on a lot. Oh well, can't change the past.
Another great story from beginning to end. The Lycas finally get help to kill devels, humans are surprising helpful. The ending is surprising and I loved how it came together. I'm thoroughly looking forward to the next in the series. Thank you for such a fun and active story, read it in 3 days. So much fun and some sex that's not the focus of the story, though he does have several children too.
This latest story ups the action ante via war (worlds war, even), along with solid changes to the Lucan community, and some babies. Babies are cool, so I was a little disappointed the births were glossed over like they were: maybe a detailed story in a side book? In any event Sean finds himself heroically in trouble once more, so seeing What Happens Next is a must.
This book is another great romp through Sean's life. It is an easy read and not easy to put down once started. No slow spots, no digression into esoteric explanations of some complicated plot devices, just a straight escape into the world according to sean. Can't wait for the next dozen or so books to come out. It took me less than 24 hours to read this one so I could use a book a week to keep my addiction going, but then I wouldn't get anything else done!
The war has begun and no one seemed ready for it which seems to be the norm now for Sean. While I enjoyed the story it seemed slightly rushed with periods of months occurring in between chapters. It understandable that the author want to progress more of the story but I would have liked a little more description of some of the more key parts that happened during these gaps.
Sean continues to find himself in trying situations. But others around him step up and New methods and problems appear. Sean becomes a Dad, several times over, as his "pride" expands. In a moment of desperation, field by a bomb,, Sean falls into the other world. While it is not as he expects, yet some things are as they were and as his wives and friends worry a new lioness appears, in the other side. And she rules overs demons.
The war that had been hinted at, and then planned for began ahead of schedule. Sean and his allies have to hold back the incoming hordes while trying to convince the powers that be that something beyond their understanding is occurring.
Another terific entry in the Valens Legacy series!
So starts the Demon Wars. Wow just Wow! The action is intense. Pregnant wife's are popping and a baby's are here. Just as Sean f's up again and does something desperate to save everyone. That is just like him right? This is one of the best books in the series hands down. If your a fan this is a must read.
I have read most of Jan/John’s books and must say that the Valens legacy is one of my favourite stories and this book was no different. I couldn’t put it down and cardio at the gym went 2 minutes past the program end as I didn’t notice as I was reading. More please!
Can't wait for book 13. This series is an excellent read for anyone who likes harem lit. Also , for those who just like well written fantasy stories. The characters are amazing and the plot just gets better with each book. I read this straight thru in one sitting and tomorrow I'm going to re-read it just to make sure I didn't miss anything. It was that good !
Sean and his army anxiously await the warning sounds of war with invading demons. As the portals open, and demons pour through, Sean's forces move to counteract. The public and some of the government are in denial as Sean holds the line. I like the action, humor, and romance. The story flows leaving one grasping for more. I look forward to the next book.
Excellent as always. I like the turn this on took and i reall want to see how this one ends. The Valens series is one of my favourites going right now. I highly recommend this series, though you really should start from the begining. And I look forward to many more, hopefully ; )
If you liked the first few.books in the series or really any of them you should enjoy this one as well. Logical progression of the story and more of the same (that's not a bad thing) kind of stories from the previous books. Have really enjoyed all of them and would encourage people to try one and if you like it you should like the rest.
This is a really entertaining series, gratuitous sex and violence, of course, but it has good characters, that are well developed as the story goes along. There is also an interesting and lively plot that keeps you wanting more! In fact, I can hardly wait for the next installment, a cut above much of this genre!
This is the latest book in an outstanding series. I have enjoyed reading each one, watching the characters and their relationships grow. If you are into action and adventure with witches, lycans, demons, and good and bad humans, this the series for you!! I am eagerly awaiting the next one!!!
Seems the war is ramping up... The lycans are the front lines but are in desperate need of logistics. Politics, ever a problem, slows the official US support but hopefully it is coming. Sean, however, makes an unintended side trip and it seems is picking up strays. Love this series and this book was no exception. Can't want for more.
If you're looking for action adventure and awesome lycanthropy this would be the book 2 read this Series has captured me from the start and will continue to Garner my attention. Jan is an excellent storyteller and this would be the perfect book to pick up for first-time Harem readers
