I love the story of The Little Red Hen. The Little Red Hen wants to plant wheat so she can make bread. She lives on her farm with her friends, the dog, pig and cow. She asks her friends to help her plant the wheat but they all had something better to do. She continued to ask for help throughout the summer, but her friends were too busy. When it was time to make and eat the bread, all of her friends wanted to join her, but she wouldn't let them because none of them helped her. You can't expect to receive things if you don't give back.
Title: The Little Red Hen/La Gallinita Roja Author: Carol Ottolenghi Illustrator: Reggie Hollaway Publisher: Mcgraw-Hill Childrens Publishing Year Originally Published: 2001 Approximate Interest Level / Reading Level: K - 1
Carol Ottolenghi retells the traditional story of the Little Red Hen. Included in this version of the story are both English and Spanish translations, so that readers can enjoy learning the story as they learn to read English or Spanish. The pictures appropriately characterize the Red Hen's willingness to work to make the bread, while also explaining the foolishness of the lazy animals on the farm (pig, cow, and the dog). Concurrently, the repetition of the animals' actions and words in the story also helps children to identify with correct and incorrect attitudes shown by the characters as well. The moral of this story will be evident to young readers: hard work produces rewards, while laziness produces none.
Another great classic book that teaches the importance of working together. I would read the book in the beginning of the year to help with community building in a new class. This book does a good job of showing readers that it can be fun to help out others.
Summary: A little red hen who wants to make bread but no one wants to help her so after she does all the work all the animals want to eat but they learn they can not since they did not help.
Review: A cute tale that shows children that helping others can get them far then not. Working together is better than one person doing the work.
Classroom Use: I would use this for the students to do a story map and to start picking out key details.
