A couple of provisos:
1. I received this book as a gift from a friend of the author.
2. Erotica and/or romance are not really my go-to genres.
That being said, let's discuss this book!
Per the author's note in the beginning, she wrote this as a response to Fifty Shades to depict BDSM ("The Lifestyle") in terms of reality and responsibility, and if that sounds dour and drab to you, you are wrong. I want to hug this author for what she intended to do - and (in my mind) succeeded at.
This book is everything that Fifty Shades should have been an utterly failed to do. The author doesn't approach the characters' sexual appetites as an emotional failing, a character flaw, or the result of trauma and/or emotional damage. Female characters have more complex relationships than "best friend" or "bitter rival." Men and women can have meaningful, non-sexual relationships. Consent is not only essential, it's a turn-on. Sex can and should be a positive experience. Romantic relationships should not be based on nonstop emotional turmoil. The main character is not depicted as an Ultra Hot Fantasy Super Model; she's a normal woman who has an actual character instead of just T&A.
Of course there's the escapist romantic fantasy elements as well. The love interest is (of course) smokin' hot and rich. The main character succeeds both professionally and interpersonally by the end of the book.
But sex positivity and mutual support is not why anyone picks up an erotica book, so let's discuss the meat and potatoes of the story.
Yes. The sex scenes are good. They are, by far, the best written parts of these books and convey exactly the sensations and emotions a reader of erotica is supposed to get. I don't think I can compliment it more than that.
Now the downsides.
There are many fun characters who feel a bit more like sitcom characters than book characters, and when not in the middle of a sex scene, the dialogue feels a little too stilted. There is plenty of witty banter throughout the book, and while enjoyable, it FEELS like scripted banter.
There is a sharp divide in the narrative flow between the sex scenes and the non-sex scenes. It's not that the non-sex scenes are bad, they just have a drastically different flow and feel than the sex scenes do.
HOWEVER I'm well aware that nobody is picking up an erotica book to complain about how the sex scenes were really well-written...but the rest of it was just "good."
The story was fun and satisfying, and I will happily continue to support this author while she writes this series.

Very well written with exceptional sex scenes. Everything that 50 Shades was not. If you like good erotica, especially BDSM erotica, that has a solid plot, fun characters, and arousing scenes, this is your book.

This book was exquisite! It held my attention and kept me on the edge of my seat. My compliments to the author for such a wonderful work of art. I can't wait for more!
