Geologist Alvin Bonman's months spent confined behind the walls of a Siberian research village end with good news and cold steak, a shave and a sodium-hypochlorite bath, and a humbling surprise. Freed for a price, Alvin's task is to serve as geology tutor for a student whose identity is shrouded in mystery and protocol. It is over the course of their consultation that professor Bonman is presented with a new form of confinement - between walls of reason and absurdity, of truth and misdirection, of survival and, perhaps, extinction.
