Walter Harrison is a writer, a dreamer, a scientist, and someone who has received a special gift. His life story parallels a journey he took with his dog into the mountains of Colorado almost thirty years ago to find a lost love. What starts out as a search to understand the past, turns into a journey of self-discovery as we learn about the true nature of love, forgiveness, loss, and Walter’s special gift; a gift that has been given to us all.
The First Gift is a timeless love story about a spiritual quest to understand our place in the world. It speaks to the heart of all of us who look up into the starry heavens and ask about our place in the universe and how we can live a life that matters.
I enjoyed the dialogue between the main character and his dog. Despite the hardships in his life, the main character chose to reach out to others. The spiritual aspect of the book was unique but as a Christian I would have taken it in a different direction. I don’t understand how the two could not have gotten together earlier on in the story and reached out to others in need together. Also, wasn’t believable to me that the main character’s brother would choose to kill him self in that way.
