Life is too short to be fat. But don’t blame yourself if you’ve struggled losing weight. There’s a lot of conflicting information and nonsense out there. Drawing on years of research, Fat Funeral answers critical questions, busts myths, and introduces The Five Golden Weight-Loss Habits—a system of simple, science-based habits that are proven, practical, and powerful enough to completely change your life.
Although I don't normally read non-fiction, I was interested in reading this book to improve my eating habits and live a healthier lifestyle. The author has an interesting way of presenting the information. This book obviously was very well researched and he offers reasons for pretty much everything in his book. I love it when I can hear the author's "voice" while reading a book. And a non-fiction book at that! This is a book not to be read and put on a bookshelf. It's a book to share with friends and family to help them achieve a healthier lifestyle. It's a book to pick up every now and then to refresh your memory on what you should be eating and doing to live a healthy life. I look forward to putting into practice things I know I should be doing to be healthy. Now I have scientific reasons for doing so. And you will too! I highly recommend this book to live your best life!
Far and away the best book on diet that I have ever read...
...and I have read a lot of them. Everything from Atkins original book on the subject to Whole30 to many other low carb, low fat, and other temporary fix diets. This is the first one that has solid scientific underpinnings for it's recommendations, is simple to understand, and is as easy to adhere to as the author claims. More importantly, it is effective. It represents a healthier relationship toward food and shopping for food.
Fat Funeral Author is 'Dan Dellumo. I liked the title, it was even better after reading the book. It took a more of scientific approach to weight loss and debunked other dietary options and our processed food dilemma in our country. It was explained in a simple and easy to understand format. It's not a quick read, but well worth the time. Everyone has a reason for their statements or opinions, Mr. Dellumo seemed to reach for the truth. Well done
Super easy to read. Science was on target and yet put in words the normal college graduate could understand. I appreciate meta analysis because it takes it a collective knowledge of the subject. Plus, at no time was it condescending. This wasn’t a “diet book.” I’ve read too many of them. Eat this, don’t eat that! C’mon I’m human, steady diet of fat, flour, and sugar is not good for anyone. Highly recommend
If your serious about losing weight, look no further my friends. This book has the latest science and strategies for losing weight. After years of being 300+ I'm ready for a change. I've sent this book to many friends. I'm excited and have good results so far. I'm sticking to it. Hope you can too. Good luck!!!
I learned so much from this book. It was nice to actually read a nutrition book that did not just rely on scare tactics to teach you about proper nutrition. It was actually the opposite, and showed the better side of food that is often demonized.
From the outside this looked like a typical “Diet Book”. It’s not. Best health book I have ever read. Based in science and reality. Excellent book that is working wonders for me.
Quick, to the point, follow the five guidelines, be successful. Willpower is not infinite so habits are your ultimate best friend in weight loss and maintenance.
Background -- I have been exercising (from powerlifting to HIIT and Calisthenics) and understand Nutrition too (from reading books to even white papers published on technical workings of the human body).
Well, this book has a different take on Nutrition. The whole premise is to look at Nutrition from an evolution perspective and support that theory from studies that have been done around it (Ex: Meat, Dairy, Grains etc are all good since we ve evolved eating them for centuries and hence should not be shunned). This also leads to the most important part which is that Whole foods are most important and processed foods should be cut out from the diet.
I did like this approach since i have been following the same (i dont distinguish between Dairy / eggs etc and cook food at home). I have dropped about 18 pounds in 5 weeks on 2 different occasions while gaining 3 pounds of muscle. However, again like many other books there is a lot of generic information thrown around and total information gathered can be collated in about 20 pages or less. I also did not like the piece about exercise. It wasnt well researched i felt but the important distinction that Diet is more important then workouts was clearly indicated.
Yes, this book is recommended and will help anyone gain some insight into nutrition for becoming lean and losing extra fat from the body. Definitely great for beginners. Solid 4 stars.
Fat Funeral did not incite panic in me to “fix” my weight issue. Instead it calmly presented new ways of thinking about an old concern that were easily digested and savored allowing me to believe this is actually doable. No weight loss plan, no diet, no recipes. It is highly aligned with my attempt to listen to my body....and that’s what I want!
I have read many books on the subject of weight loss and by far this has been the most useful. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to approach change calmly and successfully.
I especially liked the chapter on willpower and habit developing.
All of the essentials are here in this book with no pressure for a short-term goal.....only long-term success!
Feeling confident, strong and satisfied with the guidance offered and plotting a course for success!
Maybe I'm not ready for the advice in this book but although thoroughly researched with a wealth of footnotes for additional reading, it still boils down to eat less, exercise more and choose whole over processed food. I know giving up sugary drinks, for example, is a huge benefit and why it's beneficial but I need more strategies on how to make those changes beyond just willpower. The book has lots of insights and I would recommend it for learning the science of nutrition.
This book has some nice insight and perspective. It provides data that contradicts the advertisment hype of food and dieting. A great start for folks learning about weight loss, diet and excercise. I wish i had read it when i was 16-19 and developing eating habits away from my parents.
The flip side is that some claims that should be backed by research aren't and others have slim, feble or seemingly cherry picked data. It has some good advice. Some of the best really. But some of its claims are a stretch.
This book is full of hard core facts and has changed the way I view food. Having lost 110 lbs due to bariatric surgery and gaining 75 lbs back, I was depressed and have tried everything to lose it, without success. I never tried saying whole foods. It makes perfect sense and I have confidence that I will lose the weight now. This book made perfect sense to me and was my "aha" moment.
3 and a half stars. There was nothing new to me here, granted, I have done a lot of research into diet and exercise. It is a good book covering all the bases. I really appreciate the author’s voice, he seems reasonable and refrains from what so many diet, weight loss, exercise books do: make their diet the end all be all religion, full of its own doctrine.
The author’s conclusions are backed by extreme research. I didn’t learn much that I didn’t already know. It just helped to have some scientific backing. Some very common sense practices for losing weight and keeping it off.
Non-nonsense, scientific approach to weight loss, debunking some of the persistent dietary myths (do not eat eggs, they are high in cholesterol, anyone?). Easy to skim through or read deeply depending on your level of knowledge with the topic. Well written, a good read.
There was a bit of new info here, and a lot I already, all of it very well researched and entertainingly written. This is a good read if you're seriously interested in your health.
This book had a lot of great ideas in it. It was a fun and easy read. It didn't hit enough on the best foods to eat or the best ones to avoid, but it mentioned the types once in a while. Well worth the read.
My uncle (a doctor) recommended it to me and it's very straightforward with the facts, science, and history. Not just what but why. You just have to be really into this sort of thing to enjoy it.
Addresses biggest subjects in nutrition including saturated fat, cholesterol, vegetable oils, meats. I only wish they included a weeks sample meal routine.
I love the evidence-based reasoning in this book. I think for most people, his ideals will indeed help us live our healthiest lives by eating the way our bodies are adapted to eat and moving the way our bodies can and want to move to give us good energy and maintain vigour. I appreciate his assertion that there are only 4 foods we should avoid and we can enjoy everything else. I do wish he'd addressed the issue of obesity as a disease and complicated health issue. Some of us will do all the right things for 90% of the time and still have bodies that hold onto fat for purposes and reasons not yet understood by science. It is important to realize that following the tenants he's outlined may not lead to a fat funeral via weight loss for all. But we are more than the appearance of our bodies, and living by his principles will no doubt increase our wellbeing, other health measures and prevent further health complications and disease. A worthwhile read.
