188 books81 followersHemendra Kumar Roy (Bangla: হেমেন্দ্রকুমার রায়) was a Bangali writer noted for his contribution to the early development of the genre of children's literature in the language. He was a noted contributor to the early development of Bengali detective fiction with his 'Jayanta-Manik'-stories, dealing with the exploits of Jayanta, his assistant Manik, and police inspector Sunderbabu. Roy also translated the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyám into Bengali. One of the best translations anywhere of Alice in Wonderland is Roy's Ajab Deshe Amala.
He is best remembered as the creator of Bimal-Kumar, the adventurer duo and Jayanta-Manik the detective duo. It was Bimal-Kumar's adventure story Jokher Dhan, for which he is famous in Bengali literature for children. He was a staunch believer in supernaturals and he used the supernatural element in several of his adventure and mystery stories. He was also a painter and the choreographer for Shishirkumar Bhaduri's Seeta. He created a comic series titled Tara Teen Bondhu, which consists of seven short stories such as 'Kukur Kahini', 'Nakuler Daon Mara', 'Maharaja Chor Churamoni Bahadur', 'Kamon Kore Totlami Sare', 'Kartik Pujor Bhoot', 'Der Dozon Jahagi', and 'Madhureno Somapoyet'. The three main character of this series, Atal, Patol and Nakul, won huge popularity among the children and youngsters.
Pinaki Roy, who has offered post-colonial interpretations of Bengali detective fiction, gives primacy to Roy more as a writer of sleuth narratives than of children's literature. Pinaki Roy credits the litterateur for initiating a trend which would ultimately bring Bengali detective-story-writing from its colonial phase to its anti-imperialistic one: "Jayanta, the detective-cum-scientist, is probably one of the earlier fictional Indian sleuths who use their Indian sensibilities to capture Indian criminals operating in what could be idenfied as an 'indigenous' atmosphere.

সেইকালের বিচারে কারো ভাল লাগতেও পারে, এইকালে পড়ে মনে হইলো লেখকের মাথায় আধলা ইটা দিয়া একটা বাড়ি দেই, তাতে তার গাঁজার নৌকা পাহাড় থাইকা নামতেও পারে।

বাংলায় জোম্বি নিয়ে প্রথম সিরিয়াস লেখা এটিকেই বলা চলে। অসামান্য বর্ণনা এবং প্রায় কাব্যিক লেখনীর সমন্বয়ে গল্পের গথিক ভাবটা ভালোভাবেই ফুটেছিল। কিন্তু শেষে এসে সব ছড়িয়ে লাট হল। লেখককে কাছে পেলে "এ কী করলেন, স্যার?" বলে চেঁচামেচিই জুড়ে দিতাম।

বিশ্বসাহিত্যে জম্বি ( কাল্পনিক চলনক্ষম মৃতদেহ ) প্রথম পরিচয় ঘটিয়ে দিয়েছিল মেরি শেলির ফ্রাঙ্কেনস্টাইন (১৮১৮) যদিও ফ্রাঙ্কেনস্টাইন সম্পূর্ণ জম্বি ছিলো না, মূলত রি-এনিমেটর গোত্রের ফ্যান্টাসি ছিল তবুও জম্বির মৌলিক কিছু বৈশিষ্ট্যের সাথে ফ্রাঙ্কেনস্টাইনের মিল খুঁজে পাওয়া যায়। এরপরে রিচার্ড ম্যাথেচন এবং এইচ পি লাভক্রাফটসহ অনেকের জম্বি নিয়ে লেখাগুলো সারা বিশ্বে জনপ্রিয়তা লাভ করে। তবে বাংলা সাহিত্য নিখুঁতভাবে জম্বির সাথে পরিচয় করিয়ে দিয়েছেন হেমেন্দ্রকুমার রায়।
উনার জয়ন্ত মানিক গোয়েন্দা সিরিজের প্রথম গল্প মানুষ পিশাচে পড়লে ধারনা এই ব্যাপারের ধারনা স্পষ্ট হয়ে যায়। তবে তার আগে উনার সৃষ্ট গোয়েন্দা চরিত্র জয়ন্ত, মানিক এবং পুলিশ অফিসার সুন্দরবাবুর সম্পর্কে কিছু জেনে নেয়া প্রয়োজন।
জয়ন্তের প্রথম আত্মপ্রকাশ ঘটে জয়ন্তের কীর্তি গল্পে। তারা, বিশেষত জয়ন্ত একজন সাহসী, ক্ষুরধার বুদ্ধিসম্পন্ন তরুন। মানিক তার সহযোগী এবং সম মনোভাবাপন্ন মিত্র। রহস্যভেদের নেশায় দেশে ও বিদেশের বিভিন্ন জায়গায় পাড়ি দিয়েছে এই জুটি। গোয়েন্দা পুলিশের বিপুলবপু দারোগা সুন্দরবাবু প্রায়ই তাদের সংগী । লেখকের অন্য সৃষ্টি এডভেঞ্চারিস্ট বিমল - কুমারের সাথেও জয়ন্ত মিলিতভাবে রহস্য সন্ধানে যোগ দিয়েছে।

চট্টগ্রামের নিকট আলীগড় নামক পরিত্যাক্ত এক শহর ঘিরে আশাপাশের লোকালয়ে শোনা যায় অনেক আধিভৌতিক ঘটনার গল্প। কিন্তু সেই গল্প একদিন বাস্তবে রূপ নেয় যেদিন শহরের ম্যাজিস্ট্রেটের ছেলে অমিয় এবং তার দুই বন্ধু এবং বোনকে নিয়ে পাখি শিকারে বেরিয়েছিলো।
মাঝপথে প্রচন্ড ঝড় আছড়ে পরে বনে। সেই ঝড়ের তান্ডব থেকে বাঁচতে ওরা আশ্রয় নেয় আলীগড়ে একটি ভাঙ্গা মসজি দে। আর সেখানে অন্ধকার থেকে ফুঁড়ে বের হয়ে আসে এক ভীষণ দর্শন মানুষ। কি উদ্ভট তার হাসি। সেই গা গোলানো হাসি সহ্য করতে না পেরে ওরা জিপ গাড়িতে ফিরে ভাসে। আর তখনই অদূর থেকে ছয়জনের একটি দলে ওদের গাড়ির দিকে এগিয়ে আসে। ওরা নিজেদের বাঁচাতে বন্ধুক দিয়ে একাধারে গুলিবর্ষণ করে কিন্তু তাতে সেই রহস্যময় ছয়জনের গতি একটুও হ্রাস পায়না। সেই ভয়ংকর ছয়জন এসে অমিয়র বোনকে কেঁড়ে নিয়ে যায়।
অমিয় নিজের বোনকে উদ্ধার করার আর কোন উপায় না পেয়ে ছুটে আসে জয়ন্ত, মানিক আর সুন্দরবাবুর কাছে। আর তারপর ঘটে যায় একের পর এক ঘটনা। রাত্রি অভিযান, ভয় পেয়ে সাহসী চৌকিদারের মৃত্যু, খুন, রক্তশূণ্য লাশ, আবার মেয়ে অপহরণ, আবার অভিযান, একটুর জন্য প্রানরক্ষা এবং অবশেষে রহস্য সামনে মুখোমুখি জয়ন্ত মানিক।
ব্যক্তিগত মতামতঃ
জয়ন্ত মানিককে গোয়েন্দা বলা হলেও মানুষ পিশাচ গল্পটি মূলত এ্যাডভেঞ্চার। সাথে কিছুটা ফ্যান্টাসি ঘেঁষা। সাধারন গোয়েন্দা গল্পতে গোয়েন্দার ব্যক্তিত্বকে লেখক পাঠকের সামনে গড়ে তোলেন। কিন্তু এখানে জয়ন্ত মানিকের ব্যাক্তিত্ব থেকে প্লটের উপর বেশি জোর দেয়া হয়েছে। মানুষ পিশাচ গল্পটি অসাধারণ একটি গল্প হতে হতে হয়নি। কারণ এর শেষ অংশের জন্য।
আসলে আমরা ব্যক্তিগত জীবনে অনেক কঠিন সমস্যার সহজ সমাধান চাইলেও গল্পে কঠিন সমস্যার সমাধানও জটিল কিছু আশা করি। গল্পটিতে লেখক পাঠকদের ধীরে ধীরে খুব আগ্রহী করে তুলেও এত জটিল রহস্য সহজ একটা সমধানে যেন পূর্ণতা এলো না। কিন্তু বাংলা সাহিত্যের সেই যুগের কথা চিন্তা করলে এত আধুনিক লেখা এবং সাবলীল লেখা যে এ্যাডভেঞ্চারে আসক্ত পাঠক মুগ্ধ হবে।

আসলে আমরা ব্যক্তিগত জীবনে অনেক কঠিন সমস্যার সহজ সমাধান চাইলেও গল্পে কঠিন সমস্যার সমাধানও জটিল কিছু আশা করি। গল্পটিতে লেখক পাঠকদের ধীরে ধীরে খুব আগ্রহী করে তুলেও এত জটিল রহস্য সহজ একটা সমধানে যেন পূর্ণতা এলো না। কিন্তু বাংলা সাহিত্যের সেই যুগের কথা চিন্তা করলে এত আধুনিক লেখা এবং সাবলীল লেখা যে এ্যাডভেঞ্চারে আসক্ত পাঠক মুগ্ধ হবে।

লেখকের এই প্রথম কোন বই পড়লাম। লেখকের ভাষাশৈলী, ঘটনার বর্ণনার ধরণ, উপমার ব্যবহার মুগ্ধ করেছে। তাই বেশ উপভোগই করছিলাম পড়ার সময়। কিন্তু গল্পের শেষটা মোটেও ভাল লাগল না। তবে নিঃসন্দেহে, লেখকের আরও লেখা নিকট ভবিষ্যতে পড়ব।

বাংলা সাহিত্যে এমন জম্বি কনসেপ্ট নিয়ে লেখায় সম্ভবত লেখকই প্রথম। দুর্দান্ত। শেষটা আরেকটু গোছানো যেত। কেমন যেন একটা তাড়া ছিলো।

Seeing orther reviews I'm wondering if I've read some other version than everyone else did~ cuz I've enjoyed it. (Actually I listened to it on Goppo Mir er Thek).
Just came to know that this story was the first ever zombie horror-thriller witten in Bangla, and the author debuted his famous duo Jayonto-Manik in this story as well. Well, if this is the first story ever featuring reanmated corpses, in Bangla, it was quite good! From the beginning, the suspense and mystery was top tier. As the story goes on and the supernatural element steps aside for some time, the story lost its charm a bit, but caught up with it's thrill again and became a solely afventurous one.
If the core element was either the zombies or the mysterious suspense, the story would have kept it's charm high. But it shifted it's tone at some point, and drastically changed, or finished in a rush, when the ending was near.
So it wouldn't be wrong to conclude all talks about this one with "good potential, failed climax". Such a pity!

But anyway, so far all the (and its quite considerable) works of Hemendra Kumar Ray I have read have felt very copied. The atmosphere is distinctly Victorian gothic and its clear Hemendra's characters, monsters and plot points are heavily borrowed(renamed) from English books. Zombies become Manush Pishach and unlike the police of Bengal that any inhabitant would know, these characters are fearless and determined and trigger happy. I think I don't like his words even more after reading such beautiful rooted works by say Syed Mustafa Siraj or Md Alamgir Toimoor. Maybe bengali audiences may have(i certainly think when it was published this was the case) appreciated the change of flavour, but from a modern perspective, the writing, plotting falls flat.

গোয়েন্দা গল্প হিসেবে অভিহিত করা হলেও "মানুষ পিশাচ" গল্পটিকে মোটেও গ���য়েন্দা গল্পের তালিকায় ফেলা যায় না। জয়ন্ত এবং মানিক জুটি আমার পাঠক মনে সেভাবে দাগ কাটতে পারেনি। আর দারোগা সুন্দরবাবুর কমিক চরিত্রটি প্রায়শই বিরক্তিকর ঠেকছিলো। এই সিরিজের পরবর্তী বইগুলো থেকে আরেকটু রহস্য রোমাঞ্চের আশা করছি। দেখা যাক...

উধাও হয়ে যাচ্ছে মেয়েরা! কবর থেকে উঠে আসছে ওরা কারা? ওরা বেঁচে আছে নাকি ওরা মৃত?

প্রশ্নের সমাধান কি আদৌ মিললো? পড়েই দেখুন না।

এই বইটির (পড়ুন উপন্যাসটির) ৯০% রিভিউতে আপনি একটাই মন্তব্য লক্ষ্য করবেন - 'শেষটুকুর জন্য এতো দুর্দান্ত একটা লেখা পুরো মাঠে মারা গেল ।'
আমারও মতামত ভিন্ন নয় । ভীষন জমজমাট একটা উপন্যাস, দারুন লাগছিল পড়তে । শেষটা লেখক আর একটু সময় নিয়ে গুছিয়ে লিখতে পারতেন । তাহলে হয়তো বাংলা সাহিত্যের অন্যতম শ্রেষ্ঠ একটা ভৌতিক উপন্যাস পাওয়া যেত ।

ভৌতিক আর রহস্য গল্পের দারুণ কম্বিনেশন। প্লট, শব্দশৈলী, চরিত্র সব গুলোই অসাধারণ তবে শেষ পর্বটা খানিকটা নড়বড়ে, শেষটা হয়ত আরো ভালোভাবে করা সম্ভব হত।
যদিও এই বইটি নিয়ে প্রতিক্রিয়া রয়েছে, তবে সবমিলিয়ে খারাপ না।

Recommendation - Recommend for teenagers and detective story lovers.
ভৌতিক এবং গোয়েন্দা গল্পের একটি অনবদ্য সংমিশ্রন হতে হতে হলো না। ক্লাইমেক্সের আগে পর্যন্ত সব ঠিকঠাক ছিল কিন্তু ঐনডিং টা যেন কেমন একটা। তবে কিশোররা এটিকে নিঃসন্দেহে উপভোগ করতে পারবে।

একরকম জোর করেই শেষ করলাম। তবে গপ্পো মীরের ঠেকে এই গল্পটির শ্রুতিনাট্য বেশ বিরক্ত লেগেছে৷ পুরো গল্প শোনা হয়নি।

গল্পটা পড়ে আমার একটাই কথা বলতে ইচ্ছে করছে.. সারাদিন উপোস থেকে হাতে একটা বাতাসা। কিন্তু বিশ্বাস করুন, গল্পে ফাঁক ফোকর থাকলেও পড়তে বেশ লাগছিল। তবে শেষে এসে সব চটকে গেল।

প্রথম শুরুটা ছিলো চমৎকার। শেষ পর্যন্ত লেখকের লেখার ভঙ্গিটা ধরে রেখেছিলো বইয়ে। বর্ণনা করার দারুন ভাষা আপনাকে মুগ্ধ করে রাখবে শেষ পর্যন্ত। কিন্তু শেষটা আশানুরূপ হয়নি। এখানে জয়ন্ত আর মানিকের কর্তৃত লক্ষ করা যায়না একেবারে। সুন্দরবাবুর, হুম বড় হাসিয়েছিলো।

বই পড়া শুরু করার আগে ভেবেছিলাম চমৎকার একটা বই হবে। কিন্তু বইটা পড়ে হতাশ হয়েছি। বইটা একটুও ভালো লাগেনি আমার।
