Drawing on his rich experience within psychiatry, Leston Havens takes the reader on an extraordinary journey through the vast and changing landscape of psychotherapy and psychiatry today. Closely examining the dynamics of the doctor–patient exchange, he seeks to locate and describe the elusive therapeutic environment within which psychological healing most effectively takes place.
Leston Laycock Havens (July 31, 1924–July 29, 2011) was an American psychiatrist and psychotherapist known best for his work on biological psychiatry, rehabilitation of severely ill patients, and methods of interviewing patients.
I did not like how this was written, it was very hard to decipher when they where writing about the patient, themselves and other stuff. Very hard for ME to get through. May not be so for others, but for me it just was not good. But that is just my own opinion, i don't want to discourage you from giving it a go.
The narrative voice was sooo all over the place, that it made me only enjoy the rare instances where there was clarity :( I think it’s safe to say I like my psychiatry books more on the academic and observational side, than on the poetic and anecdotal one. Certain parts were really poignant though!
This is dated and kind of dense at times. But profundities sprinkled throughout. Impressive rendering of a theory of psychiatry able to incorporate biological psychiatry and Freudian analysis.
