This books are ok. Ok story and ok tempo, but there is a few things that really makes it only an ok series. Everything is a bit "shallow". I listened to this book in the form of an audiobook, but I was never drawn totally into the universe. It is easy to listen to, but does not need you to focus on the story to take it in. Everything is quite predictable. The worst part for me is the feeling of Shallowness. There is no in-depth explanation. The “bad” alliance. I had zero “oh they are bad and dangerous” feeling about them. They where there, just like my cup of coffee is on the table right now. Its there, Its brown with milk, no sugar. That is the explanation about the “bad” alliance. Its an alien race, they have big ships, they are bad…. Because of this you do not get the urgency of the attack or the importance of defending. Then you have all of the “oh this is bad, we have to battle, we are in a tight situation, we have to brake out”, there are no situation where the heroes does not solve and pulls out a solution, or the solution presents it self for the heroes in no time. Braking out from prisons, hijacking spaceships, what ever it is, an social aquert janitor guy with some education and a few other misfits can pull everything off with no problems. No matter who is against them. The whole of earth? No problem. Alien race? No problem. I would rate the series 2.5, but since it was good enough to make me listen to the end I rate it a 3. It is good enough and interesting enough to read/listen to, but do not expect a big immersive universe.
Do you know how when you read a book with an interesting premise, great characters and lots of action and you wish the author had gone into more detail about the character's lives because you just wanted to know more? This book does that and more. When I first started it I thought that it really needed a good editor who would have cut out huge chunks and condensed it down to what is the prevailing thought of what a novel should be.....but as I read further into it, I was happy there was more detail. I did still skip a bit but it kept my attention through the entire series....and hopefully there will be more to come! (Note to the authors- we don't really need 9 more...maybe 3? ;-) )
The bad first: You swiftly get tired of how our super hero is\was such a super loser up to the very moment he became super duper. Why He has solutions no one else can figure out every single time.
Then the constant continual battle here, there, everywhere duet de doodoo! No matter who they encounter its a battle to the end. But of course He has virgin hands and wants no murder in his conscious? Huh?
Worse they battle through massive complex military bases and out fight pros in their own facilities. They break into or out of the most secret prisons as if they were born to it? Entire governments bow to all 5 of 6 or them. Each a nobody just the month before? A tad unrealistic.
But the worst part is the feeling he is a flat pervert. Like a human in love with an ape or horse. Kinda just Weird.
But still you avoid this because you kinda are drawn into the book. If only he was not so oh I hate war. Bang, bang, a dozen more dead! Next!
The story definitely has its good points and those who grew up on Star Wars and Star Trek stories should enjoy this. The leading characters are a lovable group of cast offs, complete with the requisite inner strengths and amazing luck to make them true underdog heroes. Good tension, great battle scenes and a slow growing relationship help support the story.
There are places where basic physics fails though, and these jolted me out of the story for a bit. Plus there were too many grammatical errors to ignore them all. Had those at least been corrected, I could see a 4 star review.
The story is quite fun and imaginative and I truly enjoyed the atypical characters. It's refreshing having a protagonist on the spectrum with friends who are genderless and/or in polyamorous relationships. Overall I would say it's an enjoyable read. My only real complaint is somewhat common among indie writers, there are some serious inconsistencies from book to book and as my brain builds a clear and fairly concrete world based on descriptions and information, it's jarring to have those things suddenly change. A good editor could probably eliminate this, and any other, issue. But that's my pet peeve. ;)
On the whole I really enjoyed this book. The main character is obviously on the aspergers spectrum & as with the rest of the characters very well written. The story is fast paced & full of excitement. I have two criticisms firstly that there are repetitive elements in the constant "I'm just a stupid handyman" naritive from the main character. The second that there were a couple of occasions when the story jarred because of proof reading. Sill I can overlook these because it's a cracking read.
I enjoyed the constant reminders that not everyone is who they outwardly appear to be. And that everyone has an untapped potential waiting inside them to become kinetic when called. Greatness lies within each of us, and that greatness can manifest in any magnitude, from the gargantuan/impossible to the miniscule/everyday. But that no matter the scale, each are just as important and necessary for all of us. Now, that having been said, Book 10, please...! 😁
Great long form story in 9 parts. Good character development, exciting action, reliable plot and a great conclusion. Interesting sci-fi concepts to ponder. Minimal gore and no sex, perfect for a pre-teen or even younger. One star off - you have to read all 9 books to get the full story arc. I doubt any of the individual books would stand alone as well. But all 9 made for a fun week reading.
I think the book started out well, then just slowly started to lose my interest. I don’t know why because I have read some of the authors other books before with no problem. sometimes authors seem to be on a roller coaster but leave the reader behind in the dust. maybe it’s just me this time, I’m sure other readers will love this trilogy
A great story to read when relaxing from the stresses of the day. Bad baddies who are all bad and good goodies topped off with a happy ending.
Challenging theme of an inter species relationship. Not too complex. Just relaxing fun. The science is a bit questionable and the details tend to be glossed over a bit. Still a good story.
Wonderful story! Great adventure! Fabulous Heroes!
I read the first three, and then I found the nine volume set. I could not put it down!
I love the relationship that began from nothing, just a little scared alien thing. What developed kept me going until the end of the ninth book. I just loved it! Clean, clever, and just right for any age. you need to read this series!
Honestly, I don't know why I finished this box set. The characters were 2-dimensional, and the situations and interactions unlikely. It's been awhile, but I can recall my eyes rolling more than a few times. There must have been something there that kept me going, but right now I couldn't tell you what it was.
This series was an example of too much detail in order to get more pages or more books without adding much to the story.I read a lot of this writers books but very disappointed with this series. Would not recommend this unless you good at speed reading in order to skip over all the extra over done discriptive detail.
Better handling of the insecurities and indecision that fringe folks deal with each day. The feel is hurried except for the romantic interludes. Good to enjoy!
Review of: Mimic; The Space Shifter Chronicles boxed set 1-9
I guess you could say that after reading through a 9 series boxed set and are sorry that you hit the end, then I guess I just enjoyed it a whole lot! With that said, then I think will enjoy this boxed set too!
The characters are likable, the adventure unstoppable and the settings remarkable. Earth in a turmoil of greed and political intrigue. An alien shapeshifting species enslaved. Hero's from the unloved sectors of society. Loved the entire series.
I enjoyed the story for the most part, but there were some question left unanswered. It's sweet at the end their revelation that the had time to explore the complexities of two species coupling but, and I'm sure many would agree, that we really wanted to know how.
I thoroughly enjoyed all their escapades and successes. I suffered for their losses and cheered their successes. Well worth the time. It seemed to end too soon.
These were surprisingly fun. Space opera like more than technical science fiction. An easier read that focused more on interpersonal relationships and social justice than technical math and science. Definitely included some of that though. I binge read these in a few days. Definitely recommend.
The start was good but then the decline started from book 5 I think, the last two had a simplistic almost childlike style, with strange wording and extremely vague descriptions of the actions. It might be that I've just read Hail Mary, don't know...
Very unusual story nothing like the normal sci-fi tales of space battles and political waffle. This was excellent with plenty action in a semi romantic story with plenty of cliff hanger endings . Hard to put the book down when waiting for the next story plot.
I liked that there was no real profanity. Just an interesting tale of two sentient beings falling in love and having harrowing but meaningful adventures.
