How do you stay alive when your basic survival instinct is out of control? After a mysterious outbreak sweeps the town of Marfa, Texas causing the fight-or-flight reaction in residents to become unstable, chaos soon erupts. It’s not long before the U.S military instigates a cordon sanitaire to contain the contagious, and a small band of survivors find themselves at the center of a terrifying government experiment. At the onset of the devastation, Chief Brody Jackson is not only juggling a six month separation from his wife, dealing with an unruly son, and hunting down a homicidal maniac, but now he’s torn between protecting the town or saving his dysfunctional family. As the lights and communication go down, and the epidemic decimates the small population, only three things are certain — no one is safe, everyone is a threat, and family is everything.

Jack Hunt is one of my favorite authors and he does not disappoint in this thrilling book! Brody is a police chief struggling with the death of one son, an impending divorce from the love of his life Jenna and now a town gone crazy. People start acting crazy hurting themselves or others. Then the army shows up, not to save the day but to hide an experiment that has gone very wrong. No spoilers here, need to read this book! It is the first of a series, but is done very well and is scary to see the depths some people including the government will go to hide their crimes and use citizens for their agenda.
Well, well, well... this was quite an exciting book that combines a lot of focus on science as well as action. I like that it starts in slow way but with lots of foreboding. I kept expecting to hear creepy music. I'm not certain about the accuracy of all of the science, but it is nice that now more people know 1. there is an amygdala in the human body and 2. the function of the amygdala. I'm really not sure about the idea that the military had that it would be a good idea to have soldiers with no fear. Fear is what makes us cautious, makes us plan well and makes us smart about our objectives.
Your average run of the mill, end of days, apocalypse, government/military incompetence, ruining everyone's day. Following the trials and tribulations of Brody Jackson, a front row seat of his attempts to wrangle his family together during the ensuing poop storm. Nothing new here, although it does move at a nice pace to keep you engaged.
So the good ol' military is playing around with thing's they shouldn't, sure it's not the first nor will it be the last. They screw up, they create something they can't handle. Shockingly it gets out of their control.
Follow the tale of a very different pandemic. This one causes you you first be in focused, then raving angry or totally without fear. It spreads easily and if not stopped can wipe out civilization. Start with this first book of the series...must read.
As I begin reading this book, I think oh another these books. However, I shortly found myself lost in this intriguing yet exciting different kind of series. Read book one of The Amygdala Syndrome, you will be glad you did.
As a deadly man made pandemic hits Marfa, Texas. It's citizens struggle to stay alive, not only from the virus but also the army who have been sent to control the situation, at all costs. Good story that moves at a nice pace, told from different people's perspective.
Perhaps it will be explained in the other books of the series, but I’m perplexed how a drug meant to control the amygdala has caused a pandemic. Otherwise, interesting characters and great plot!
