Shane Everett co-owns an investigation firm. He works mostly in the field, but is looking to leave the investigating behind. Shane and his brothers are opening a new pub in Granite Lake. Mixing items to come up with new brews is what he really longs to do. But agrees to one final investigation...
While skydiving, Shane meets an intriguing woman. When he sees her chatting with Gabe, he’s even more perplexed. Gabe’s family is mafia. While he has legitimate businesses, he also dabbles in things “not above board”. When Gabe asks Shane to investigate Alex, he can’t help but think she may be the one who needs assistance. So he accepts, telling Gabe he’s retiring after he figures out who Alex is.
Autumn Alex Monroe makes her living as a writer. In order to fully understand her characters, she often immerses herself in various roles. She wants to know what it’s like to live life as a member of the mafia, so she feigns interest in Gabe. Gabe believes Alex may be “the one”, but doesn’t feel he knows enough about her. Alex comes from a wealthy, well known family whom she constantly disappoints. So as not to “embarrass” her family with her fantasy, romance novels Alex has several pen names. Hence the investigation.
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. I loved the concept as well. I believe this is the first novel I’ve read where an author’s research into the mafia turns into a kidnapping, a shotgun wedding and a HEA. It was highly entertaining, funny, suspenseful, and endearing. I loved T-Rex too! While there are references to characters in other novels, this novel can be read as a stand-alone. It is the third novel in the series. I read a gifted copy and all opinions stated are my own.
Strap yourself in for a fast-paced roller coaster of a romantic suspense by one of my favorite romance authors. Jody Kessler has a remarkable way of getting into her characters heads and making the reader see the action through their eyes. With this novel, the characters are unique and quirky and the whirlwind plot keeps you glued to the action as the author jumps back in forth through time.
The main character of this roller coaster is Autumn Alexandria Monroe Sawyer, whose life is more complicated than her full name plus all her pseudonyms combined. Autumn is an author who writes both science fiction and romance under a few different pen names, and likes to have hands-on experiences of the things she incorporates into her novels. Wacky and unpredictable, but not stupid and definitely likeable.
With her current books delving into mafia-entangled suspense, she decides to date a few connected Italian men, to get the inside scoop... Except she ends up with more than she bargained for, dating two different men from rival families. Luckily, retired special forces and former private investigator Shane Everett is around to save her from herself, as well as from the Moretti crime family.
Plot twists and time jumps keep the reader on their toes almost as much as Autumn keeps Shane on his. Throughout it all, the electricity between Shane and Autumn sizzles off the page. With a heroine this unpredictable, it's hard to know what constitutes her happily ever after, or if she'll ever be able to achieve it... But somehow despite the insanity, you keep rooting for the couple to figure it all out.
This book is part of a series the author has set in the fictional mountain town of Granite Lake, California. Autumn appeared as a minor character in the previous story, Diving Elise, and owns the bookstore Elise works at. She also appeared as a minor character in Reclaiming Melanie, the third book in the series. Shane Everett is the middle child of the three sexy Everett brothers who are opening the new brew pub across the street from the bookstore. You can read this as a total standalone, or as part of the larger series.
Five sizzling stars to this crazy bunch of characters.
The amazing Jody A. Kessler has made me such a fan with the Granite Lake Romance series, as the stories are so original, and addictive. Detecting Autumn is Autumn (sorry about that spoiler), and Shane's story, which I went back & forth between laughter & heart racing. But let me give you a bit of back story. Autumn is Elise's best friend, who happens to be with Shane's brother. She's a mysterious author, who has more than one pen name, and I won't tell you why in case this is your first trip to Granite Lake, but because of that, she has all kinds of privacy walls up that it takes a real professional to get past them to actually learn who she really is. Now, when Shane meets her, she's basically got two different mafia men fighting over her, yeah, her life is very colorful, and one of those dangerous men, has hired Shane to look into her background. This leads to him getting caught up in the crossfire of her colorful existence, and he finds her to be sexy & smart, while they have explosive chemistry. And that chemistry leads to super sexy times that light the sheets on fire, but it's their witty interactions that kept me laughing, especially Autumn's thought process. Obviously, there's twists, I mean come on, mafia men after her? They were crazy twists to get the colorful metaphors going, while the heart pounded like mad. But there was also an emotional side as well, because Shane was a man, who had to make some questionable douchey decisions, which had me ready to throat punch him. So this story had all the ingredients for an amazing read that I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
LOVE Autumn and Shane's story!!! After reading Detecting Autumn, Autumn and Shane are my favorite couple of the mountain set series. Two people with different approaches to how they're living their lives at the moment. Autumn as a writer of popular series, throws herself into method-acting to get a feel for her main characters. While Shane is just looking to wrap up his active PI work to make it to Granite Lake to open up his brewery with his brothers and perfect his brews.
Meeting by way of a skydiving engagement party of mutual friends, seems like the least complicated of the many issues that arise between them. As Autumn is currently researching details for her mafia series by dating known mafioso Gabe Moretti. Shane has worked with Gabe, and knows Gabe's a little shady and unscrupulous when he wants something. Shane realizes that Autumn might be in over head they grow closer and Shane wants to protect her. They just need to survive getting to Granite Lake in one piece while Shane tries to also figure out what Autumn is hiding.
I received an ARC for a voluntary and honest review.
Autumn is a funny/crazy author that goes about writing her characters by becoming that character in real life, then writing what happens. I liked how she wasn’t afraid to try anything, but on the other hand I would have never done what she did. Especially when she got involved with someone from the mafia! Even though Shane was suppose to be working for Gabe, the guy in the mafia, I was glad he was looking out for Autumn. Things go crazy as Autumn had hooked up with two different mafia families. I think Gabe was a little crazy. I also loved how Shane was back with his brother’s a lot getting ready for the opening of the bar in Lake Granite. I loved how Elise who was married to Shanes’s brother and Autumn’s best friend helped Autumn with her issues. It was fun watching Shane and Autumn fall in love without them realizing. I loved the book, and strongly encourage you to read the book. I voluntarily read an Advanced Reader’s opt of this book.
Dealing with Autumn made Shane pull skills out of his hat to keep up with her shenanigans. Here we have a writer who actually feels the need to do her research in person, without letting the person know it's research. What starts as her harmless fun and book work ends up boiling into a comedy of messes, well not really funny while it's happening though. I love that these two have no intention of committing to anything but life has other things in store for them. It's great having all of the brothers together again well it will be when everything finally settles down. Depends on what it takes to get two not one mafioso men to back down and off of Autumn and Shane to not have a coronary. Lots of fun and some intrigue and a whole lot of passion get these two through their fun and games and on to other things.
This story already starts full of action and some twists. Autumn is an author and, to get ideas for her stories and characters, she ends up delving into her research of people and situations. But when she finds herself dating a mafia member, she didn't expect things to go wrong. Shane Everett is moving to Granite Lake, but accepts one last job for Gabe Moretti, a well-known member of the mafia. When Autumn and Shane's lives are threatened and they are forced to marry, neither of them expected what it could bring them. As they learn to deal with each other and their emotions, they realize that they have more in common than they imagined and resolve to give a chance to the feelings that arise. I loved the story and the characters, and also for having the chance to see some characters from the other books again, even briefly. I highly recommend the reading.
Detecting Autumn is the book 5 of the Granite Lake Romance series by Jody A. Kessler. This is the first time I read from Jody and she did not disappoint me at all. Well, I would say, I do recommend to read from book 1 because it will make me fill more complete with the series.
So Autumn Alex Monroe is a writer and Shane Everett is half an owner of an investigating firm. The story is simple and funny. I do like how Jody describes Autumn and Shane. The plot is great and I love the cover! It fits right in with the title.
Lastly, I do think there will be more reading from the author, her writing definitely worths my time.
Thank you to the author for providing ARC in exchange for an honest review.
What a great story! I was laughing during the whole thing as the main character, Autumn is hilarious. Ms. Kessler must have had as much fun writing her as I did reading about her. Autumn is an author who tends to make up her own language, i.e. smexy is smart and sexy. Shane is one of the Everett brothers, who you’ll recognize if you’ve read any of Ms. Kessler’s other Granite Lake books. Plus, we get to catch up with some of the other characters from previous books. I’m so glad Shane finally gets his HEA although he has to endure a kidnapping, drugging, and some other adventures to get it. I received an ARC from the author. This is my honest review.
This is the fifth book in this series and is Alex and Shane’s turn. Alex is an author with several pen names, and to get a feel for her characters she immerses herself in situations. Gabe is a mafia member who Alex is getting to know for one of her characters. Shane is a private investigator who is closing down his business to go into another with his brothers. Gabe convinces Shane to investigate Alex. This is a well written story which is filled with drama, suspense, and is a steamy, hilarious and all round entertaining read. I was enthralled throughout, and cannot wait to read more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend for all.
This one took me a while to get into with so much jumping back and forth in the timeline, but once I got a feel for the characters, I enjoyed the story. This pair goes through a lot to get to their happy ever after, but it is an entertaining ride. Autumn, or Alex?, is an author who goes the extra mile to research a character. In this case, it may be a few extra miles, and she may be in over her head. Caught between two men with mafia ties is not a comfortable position. Shane's kind of caught in the middle, and so it all begins. The couple has good chemistry, and the story has plenty of suspense, some steamy fun, and some laugh out loud humor.
Shane is intrigued by Autumn Alex Monroe the first moment he saw her at her friends engagement party. Autumn knows she needs to separate herself from the man she is dating Gabe and her ex Luca. While trying to escape them both Shane and Autumn are kidnapped and thrown into some pretty interesting positions. This book was just okay for me. It was a good read but I found at times the story lagged for me. I like the humor and connection between the main characters.
This novel took some real hard work to get into at first but once I did it became easier to read and enjoy. A little choppy, far fetched and annoying at times but I loved the hero Shane for his no nonsense attitude. On the other hand Autumn could be a real pain in the behind most of the time with her kooky attitude but she too settled down, although almost at the end of the book. I rated this 3.5 Stars and you should read it and decide for yourself.
It was a little confusing timeline wise. But overall I had a lot of fun with this novel! Two mafia men pining after the heroine makes for a crazy romance whirlwind. I definitely recommend reading if you want something that will sweep you off your feet.
I received a copy of this book and am voluntarily reviewing.
I loved Shane and Alex!! This book was funny and sexy and the characters were just great!! I read it in one sitting! I'm adding Shane to the harem definitely!
