A young widow… A grieving brother… Could a second chance heal them both?
Widowed too soon, leaving her alone with a young son and a broken heart. Drew’s only priority is to rebuild a life for herself and her son. Love is the last thing on her mind.
As long as he can remember, Ben has secretly loved Drew. But now his only job is to be there for his older brother’s widow and son, not act on his forbidden feelings. No matter how strong they are.
Despite the promises she made to her dying husband, Drew never expected to be able to open her heart again. But shared grief brings healing, and when Ben finds a way to make good on his vow to his brother. It’s not only laughter and happiness he brings back into Drew’s life—it could also be love.

She can often be found with her toes in the lake and a glass of wine in her hand, dreaming up her next book and working on her own happily ever after with her very own mountain man.
Elena Aitken has written another emotional second chance book in her Timber Creek series. When We Fell is the story about Drew and Ben. Ben has been in love with Drew for years, but Drew married his brother, Eric. When Eric dies from pancreatic cancer, Eric makes Ben promise to look after Drew and his son, Austin. This is the story of how Drew puts her life back together, after a heartbreaking loss. We also get to catch up with Evan and Cam, Christy and Mark, and Amber and Logan. Do yourself a favor and grab your copy and get ready to fall in love with all these characters from the Timber Creek series.
This is the last of the Timber Creek books and yes, it is a standalone however there is SO much goodness in this series that you’ll want to read the ones before When We Fell. We’ve met Drew and Ben before however this is their story. And let’s not forget Austin! OMG, this five year old little boy melted my heart.
Drew’s husband just recently passed away, from a long bout of fighting cancer, and she is back in her hometown where there are family and friends to help with her and Austin’s path out of grief. She truly was in love with her husband Eric and had spent most of the last year of his life talking through what life would be like for Drew and their son after he had passed. IMHO, the author really made you feel the grief and love that these two had…
The person who has helped Drew and Austin the most was Ben, Eric’s younger brother. Drew and Ben have been friends since they were little, close through most of school, until Drew fell in love with his big brother, Eric. Drew and Ben grow close but that is such a simple, the author handles the growing relationship between Drew and Ben with such heart and love that I cannot begin to describe it. It’s a hard topic to discuss but Ms. Aitken does it so well; it is truly believable with how everyone handles it. There’s another hard topic with two secondary characters; for some, it, too, is touchy but again, the story is wonderfully warm and believable.
I highly recommend When We Fell and the entire Timber Creek series – it will touch your heart, and your funny bone.
Elena Aitken’s Timber Creek series is all about redemption & second chances. In When We Fell, Ben has been in love with Drew since they were in high school. Drew had no idea. After Ben introduced her to his brother Eric, she never looked back. Eric & Drew got married, had a son named Austin, moved back to Timber Creek, Eric battled cancer & lost. Now Drew is trying to find a way to continue with life & Ben is there to support her & help with Austin. The problem is Ben’s feelings never died & now Drew is not only aware of them, she’s returning them. How long is long enough to grieve?
I loved this story! It emphasizes that each person’s grieving period is different & there is no right or wrong answer. This was a very emotional story as Drew battles through the layers of grief, fear & guilt. I love that Austin was such a big part of the story along with both sets of parents. This book can easily be read as a stand alone without being confused. The characters from the previous stories appear but are explained & it’s nice to have the quick update of their lives. Make sure you have plenty of time to read & tissues on hand! You’ll want to read this all in one sitting!
This is a very emotional story, I teetered between laughing and crying in many places, as does Drew. She has lost her husband Eric to cancer. They had moved back to Timber Creek to be with family and friends when they knew his illness was terminal. Eric has been gone for around ten months when the story begins, and for much of that time Drew has been a mess; so grief-stricken that her dear friend Amber, who had moved back home from a high powered job in San Francisco to look after her, (just one of her reasons for coming home) had to take Austin, Drew’s son, to and from school. Drew simply couldn’t leave the house. But with the help from her very supportive family and friends, not least Ben, Eric’s younger brother, she is at last moving out of her grief, and starting to look forward again.
Ben has been in love with her since elementary school. This caused a rift between him and Eric for many years. Ben doesn’t think anyone knows about it, but all their friends do, including Drew, deep down. She relies on his companionship, when she see him chatting and flirting with a young woman she is shocked to realise she is jealous! Drew eventually feels strong enough to sort out Eric’s room, and brave enough to read the notebook she finds there. She knew about the book, but had never looked at it. It is filled with lists, happy memories, simple things that made him happy. One list is a bit different to the others. She shows the book to Ben and he realises that list is things that the pair of them did together one idyllic summer when they were young, he realises that Eric wanted Ben to do them all with Austin. The intention was for just the two of them to complete everything on the list, but Drew joins in the first one, and gets included in the rest, they all have a great time carrying them out.
They get closer, and eventually admit to each other what all their friends already know, they love each other. The idea actually terrifies Drew, it takes her a long time to come to terms with it, and their relationship suffers several rocky moments. All is well that ends well, but you do have to admire Ben for remaining calm and sure that they will get there!
Drew is trying to move on after losing her husband Eric to pancreatic cancer. She is focused on caring for her son and finding a new career in Timber Creek. Ben promised his brother Eric that he would look after Drew and Austin. Drew and Ben spend a lot of time together and their relationship starts to evolve. This story is emotional and heartfelt. How soon is too soon to move forward after the death of a spouse? Can Drew move forward with Ben and not feel like she is betraying Eric? I love how the author develops relationships, making them real and believable. An enjoyable but emotional book!
Drew has lost her husband to cancer and must learn to live without him. She has a young son who looks so much like his father that it’s sometimes overwhelming. With the help of friends and family, specifically her husband’s younger brother who has always loved her, she learns that grief has no time limit, and that, just because you had a great love, you can still find the capacity to open your heart to a new love. Having lost my husband to cancer, this book resonated to me on a more personal level. I laughed and cried and like Drew was blessed to have wonderful friends and family, especially my grandchildren, to help me overcome my grief
Drew and Ben’s story was based on tragedy. Ben had loved Drew his whole life and when she married his brother and moved away it left Ben heartbroken. Years later Drew, Eric and their son, Austin come back to Timber Creek. Eric has terminal cancer and comes home to die. Ben owns and runs the local pub and his feelings for Drew have never changed. After Eric dies Ben is there for Drew and Austin, after all, they are his family. Can they find happiness together or is their attraction/chemistry wrong? Love that this final book also caught up with Amber and Logan, Christy and Mark and Cam and Evan.
I was happy to finally be reading Drew and Bens story. Can be read as a standalone but even better if you have read the series.
A second chance love story that is full of emotion and will make you shed a tear or two. You also get more of an update on how the other couples from the series are doing.
A beautiful story about a second chance at love after a terrible loss. Drew and Ben find a light in the darkness in each other as they both battle their grief. Hearts melt as they connect and find that even through loss, something good could be discovered if you would only take the chance to grab it.
Another wonderful story of second chances. Such a hard topic of loss and grief but the hope of the future. As always, well written and keeps you reading until the end. Looking forward to more stories.❤️❤️
Once again these women come together to support one another in whatever is going on in their lives. I love stories that show support and a strong bond.
Drew and Ben's story is incredible! This book is at times heartbreaking and devastating but also filled with so much hope. This is my favorite of the Timber Creek series.
Wow! Elena Aitken can really write. She is a phenomenal writer. She knows what her readers want in a book and always go beyond what they want.
In When We Fell we get Drew and Ben's story. Both Ben and Drew are on a journey. They are learning to move forward and pick up their shattered lives and rebuild them. They are learning acceptance. Drew is discovering who she is with out Eric and moving forward. Drew is learning how to be a single parent to her son Austin. Ben is learning how to go on without his big brother. Both Ben and Drew's struggles are very relatable. Their chemistry is perfect. They fit together like two puzzle pieces. I loved the secondary character's. I also enjoyed catching up with Evan and Cam, Christy and Mark and Amber and Logan.
I really enjoyed When We Fell. This was a very heartwarming story that captivated my heart and soul from page one and kept it captivated til the end. At times I cried and laughed and even had hearswooning moments. Reading When We Fell made my heart swell with emotion. Drew and Ben's story was relatable to me. When We Fell deserves to be on the New York Times and USA Today's Bestselling list. When We Fell was a sweet story. Elena Aitken's words danced off the pages right into my heart.
I loved this book. So heartwarming and sad. When Drew lost her husband it was devastating to say the least, but she wasn’t alone. She had good friends to help her, and her husbands brother there. Her son was the most important thing to her. What Ben did for her and Austin was beyond amazing. When Drew showed Ben something Eric had written before he passed he knew he had to show Austin what him and his brother did. It was something they did when they were kids. It was something he needed to share with Austin. To his surprise Drew came along. It tore at my heart. But when Ben confessed his feelings for Drew more emotions set.
Highly recommend. This is entirely a stand-alone. However I do recommend all the books in the series.
Fourth in the Timber Creek Series and my favorite, so far. This story deals with loss and renewal. There is heartbreak, stress, depression and romance. The character interactions are well and truly done, in places, a little over the top, but I felt an emotional link with the characters. Well done and a good read.

NO SPOLIERS Wow When we Fell is truly a redemption and second chance romance. Elena's Timber Creek series is all about emotions and definitely brings them out in me. This is Drew and Ben's story and wow it packs a huge emotional punch. All I can say is if you like the second chance and emotional reads this series is for you.
From the start of the series I have been wanting to read Ben and Drew’s story and it didn’t disappoint. A very emotional read. This book gets you thinking what you would do if you are in their shoes. I love how it enfolds although I would have loved a little bit more of the romantic side. A fab read, though loved it.
Loved this second chance story, while the subject matter was tricky, Ms. Aitken wrote it brilliantly! I laughed and cried (a lot) and thoroughly enjoyed Ben and Drew’s story. The whole series was about love and friendship and second chances. Loved it!
Loved this second chance story, it showed so many sides of grief from all members of each family and friends. It brought on lots of tears and laughter! Love the characters and the wrap up of the whole series. This series was beautifully written!
3.5 stars, rounded up. While the basic plot is not exactly unique, it's certainly not common - a nice departure from the usual formulae used for romances.
