This book was a quick and easy read and I finished it within 24 hours. I found it quite pleasant, gently moralistic and for me, it is definitely for young people. There is no plot to speak of. The narrator is Oliver himself and it is one of those books where animals take on human characteristics as in children's books. It didn't exactly challenge and to be honest I did find it 'twee' It has many five star reviews so I am in the minority.

This darling story about Oliver, a temporarily homeless cat (whose owner’s pub burned down) who moves in with two neighboring families and brings positive change to them and in fact, their whole village Told from Ollie’s perspective to a new little kitty, it is full of gentle humor and warmth and will be a precious addition to your Christmas bookshelf. Charming view of British village life with pleasant characters and surprise twists.

I can’t say enough good things about this charming and delightful tale. Told by Oliver, the cat who did more than just save Christmas in his little village, this story is pure enchantment from beginning to end. Though Oliver may be endowed with more than just normal cat smarts, he is a gentle and caring creature and not at all proud. Having had a rough start in life, he is quite affectionate if a bit cautious. He lives at the village pub with George, but that peaceful life is interrupted by a devastating fire. Now in temporary foster care and shared by two families, Oliver is soon ensconced in the affairs of many of the villagers. It has been said (too many times, I fear, and I am sorry to repeat it), that it takes a village to raise a child. In this case, it takes a cat to save a village. In telling his story to a much younger kitten, we learn all about Oliver’s life, his bravery, and his cleverness. A wonderful tale wonderfully told, this story is for all who love cats and Christmas, or just are fond of a heartwarming tale.

One-Sentence Summary: The life of a fictional cat living in a small village

Review: You may think from the title and the description that this is actually a children's book in a bad disguise but I assure you it will melt even the coldest adult heart.

The book is told from the perspective of Oliver the cat and whilst it is his partly his a story about his life, through his eyes, you get to learn the toils and troubles that each family in the village is going through during the festive time.

This is a really cute, easy-to-read book for all animal and Christmas-lovers alike!

A gentle read - good to have a breather after reading some intense books . Set in England with a cat as the main character in a small village , we see the goings on, the trials and tribulations of the village people through Oliver's eyes.

Come?

This is a lovely story of Oliver the cat, who saves his owners life when a fire breaks out at his pub. Oliver is then fostered by neighbours as his owner recuperates and the pub is refurbished. Very like "Alfie the doorstep cat" Oliver becomes involved in lots of peoples lives helping them and bringing them together. He befriends a little girl who is very ill, giving comfort in his own special way. It is sweet that it is told by Oliver, with his own expressions and understanding of human behaviour. This is a warming christmas story that will make you smile!

I loved this book. It's told from Oliver (the cat's) point of view. I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 because everything falls too neatly into place at the end. I know it's fiction, and it's a very sweet story. It's just incredibly unrealistic. I would still recommend this book to friends, though1

L’insopportabile gatto.

First off, this is not a MG book as I mistakenly assumed when requesting it through our library's online system after searching for "holiday cat" books and seeing the cute cover. Several chapters in, I had to check and found it was actually shelved as Adult Fiction. My mistake. That being said, it wasn't inappropriate for my kids (12, 10, 10), just weird if it had been a MG book. In the end though, regardless of the genre, I found the story terribly drawn out, repetitive, and predictable. I would've enjoyed the story more it it was wrapped up in half the pages. My 10 year olds really liked that it was Oliver telling the story and it had some cute parts, though, and a happy ending.

It’s a pretty cheesy book for cat lovers where not a lot happens but as long as you go into this book with that knowledge (and read it in December) you’ll enjoy it. Emphasis on community building was nice and had a festive feel, it was feel good and whilst it may not be a complicated novel I enjoyed it.

Oliver is a tabby cat who survived a fire at a pub/community center. He ends up helping various people in the village (in his own kitty way) to save Christmas.

💕 Positives:

Very fluffy and easy to read. A nice break from the holiday stress.

It features a cat telling a story to a kitten. Need I say more?

🚫 Negatives:

Incredibly sad beginning. The first 5 chapters are heartbreaking.

The entire storyline arounId Suki (another cat) was strange.

⚡Trigger Warning:

One cat, Tabby, contemplates suicide but he is stopped before he can go through with it.

📚 Overall, it's a quirky yet fluffy read. Definitely geared towards the younger crowd of YA readers. I think that the book would have done better if it leaved the suicide portion out. There are quirks and then there are quirks that are too strange or weird for me. This was one of the latter things. Thankfully, the happily ever after ending more than made up for it. I loved how everything wrapped up together nicely.

This was the latest book group choice. I felt it was more suitable for a young adult to read (12 - 13) years old than us old dears, although I'm sure some of them will think it's really good. I'll let you know when we have our next meeting at the end of October.

I challenge you to read this book and not end up smiling for large parts of it. This is one of those incredibly sweet books, written from Oliver the cat's perspective, and it is clear he is full of love for his various humans, and tries his best to be helpful.

You see, as Oliver explains early on, all cats are born bilingual, so they can understand both cat and human, and he thinks its a shame that humans can't seem to learn cat. So Oliver is able to do all sorts of good deads for people in his little town, and noone quite believes it wasn't a coincidence that he was around every single time.

Early on in the story, you realise that Oliver is telling his story of last Christmas, to a little kitten, its clear the little kitten is enjoying listening, when he stops playing with his tail and other such cattish behaviours!

From Oliver's point of view, you learn about the lives of people living in the town, mainly from him listening to them talk. He does also have cat friends, and I loved the interactions of Tabby and Suki.

Oliver hasn't had an easy life, and he will slowly tell you himself, the reasons he finds it hard to trust male adult humans. I loved though how he referred to children, as human kittens, and that hands are paws! There is something so charming about seeing life from the eyes of a cat.

I don't want to give too much away, but suffice to say Oliver is a truly special cat, and there is a decent helping of Christmas spirit, and the kindness of strangers, as well as a great community banding together feeling, from this story.

I really enjoyed reading Oliver the Cat who Saved Christmas, and would recommend it to all animal or Christmas lovers.

Thanks so much to Ebury and Netgalley for this review copy. This was my honest opinion.

This charming tale, told by a cat to a kitten about his life and how he came to be “The Cat Who Saved Christmas,” is purrfect for all ages. When Oliver, the local pub cat, loses his home in a fire, he is befriended by two couples who take him in and share his care until his owner returns from London where he is temporarily staying with his sister who has cat allergies.

To repay the people who shelter him and because he becomes aware of how profoundly the pub’s loss has affected the entire village, Oliver sets out to make things right. Although he has many setbacks including being chased off the large property of the rich man in town whose young, ill daughter looks forward to his secret visits, Oliver manages to bring the joy of the holiday to all. I found this to be a sweet and heartwarming story and highly recommend it.

I found this to be an utterly charming, heartwarming book for cat lovers of all ages. It's the fictitious story of Oliver, a pub cat who is temporarily displaced when the pub burns down and his owner must relocate until the pub can be rebuilt. Two families agree to look after him and Ollie, in turn, looks after them.

Since I have an orange tabby named Ollie myself, I was particularly drawn to this story. I thought Shelia Norton did a superb job of imagining what a cat is thinking and there were many laugh-out-loud moments. I also liked that this was set in small English town as I have spent quite a lot of time in little boroughs around London on my layovers (as a flight attendant).

Highly recommend this if you want something lighthearted that will put a smile on your face.

Heartfelt, moving, and inspiring, a Christmas book perfect for fans of A Street Cat Named Bob

Oliver the cat is a timid little thing, who rarely ventures from his home in the Foresters Arms.

Then his life changes dramatically when a fire breaks out in the pub kitchen and he is left homeless and afraid. But, with the kindness of the humans around him, he soon learns to trust again. And, in his own special way, he helps to heal those around him.

However, it isn't until he meets a little girl in desperate need of a friend that he realizes this village needs a Christmas miracle...

Touching and genuine, this is the tale of a little cat with a big heart. Fans of A Street Cat Named Bob and Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World will be delighted.

What a lovely book that would particularly appeal to cat lovers- but is a heartwarming story for everyone who likes animals.
It is written from Oliver’s perspective and follows his travels around the village- after his home with George burnt down. He tries to spread cheer around the various people he comes into contact with and can’t understand why some of them aren’t captivated by him!
With Christmas coming he is trying to help everyone- both his feline friends and the humans. The Christmas preparations add to the magic of the story and it is a really heartwarming read.
With many thanks to the publisher and Net Galley for a copy of this book in return for an honest review.

A sweet little feel-good Christmas story set in an equally sweet little English village. Written for adults, but in that magical way where only the ages and situations of the human characters make it so, because it's structured as a story Oliver is telling to a kitten and has as much charm as a children's book.

My very first review here!
This book took me only a few days to finish. The story is narrated by Oliver to "little kitten". l thought it might be more of a children's book but i was moved by it. Only one part of it was upsetting for me(being a huge animal lover) but as always its great to have a happy ending to a book :)

This charming story told from the cat's point of view as he regales a younger kitten is as heartwarming as it is delightful. When a fire destroys Ollie's home, he is looked after by different folks in the village. But Ollie's clever ways and propensity for meddling give him a chance to become deeply involved in village life . . . and maybe, just maybe, to save Christmas in the process.
