➕ What I liked :
Rather interesting main characters.
Country setting. (Not set in London.)
Inexperienced hero.
Opposite attract.
Experienced and free-spirited/outspoken/flirty heroine.
Unconventional heroine for a historical romance.
(Goes after what she wants and does not really care what others think.)
Funny.
French hero.
Interesting side characters.
Grumpy/broody hero that also has a side to him that is more vulnerable and with cinnamon roll vibes.
Heroine gives hero English lessons.
Good romantic build up and chemistry.
Rather good and interesting plot…. That also had some sweet moments.
OK steam.
➖ What I disliked:
The hero had a somewhat haughty or arrogant side to him because he came from a french noble family… it was a little OTT/stereotypical and annoying.
Somewhat annoying hero.
(OTT patriotic hero especially since the hero had not lived in France since he was 13 years old…. And he has lived 18 years in England.)
Believability/plausibility issues etc.
(That the hero had lived 18 years in England and not assimilated more/better than he did….. and not learned English much better than he did…. especially since he came to England as a young boy (13 years old) and that he had worked with/beside his uncle as a blacksmith… a uncle that spoke both English and French… and the hero would have needed to converse with customers often in English.
That the hero would have been so occupied with doing his job and taking care of his siblings… that he had no time for anything else…. The hero and his siblings had his uncle and also the heroes siblings were just 3 and 5 years younger than the hero… the older they got the more they would have helped out if they were not spoiled or lazy… and the older they got they would also had their own lives.)
So far….. the character description/visual appearance/character choices in this series is somehow both vague and formulaic.
What little info there is about the main characters appearance/looks is mostly about their hair color and eye color… not much else is mentioned. (especially about the heroines.)
All the main characters so far have different or very different personalities and personas which is really great. 👍👍
But when it comes to appearance/looks the main characters of this series kind of blend together and become formulaic.
The steam was OK but a little bit on the sparse side.
(Would have been great with a little bit more.)

A fun holiday romance novella! This entire series is pretty entertaining. In The Duke's Desire we have Meg- a spinster who shamelessly goes after what she wants in the bedroom, but doesn't think she will ever be the one someone wants to marry. And Lucien le Duc, the hot Frenchman that everyone thinks is surly, but actually he's just embarrassed because he doesn't speak English very well. So he doesn't speak much at all. Meg offers to give him English lessons and along the way they fall in love. It's a quick novella but charming and their banter is pretty entertaining. The audiobook is pretty good. I received an audio review copy of this book via NetGalley, all opinions are my own.

From start to end, the scandalously naughty Meg (my spirit animal) made this novel an instant hit and her encounters with Lucien and how easily she made him submit to her seductive ways were thus far my favorite scenes throughout my read . It had everything you're looking for: historical elements, tempting heroine, brooding hero and a whirlwind (more like instant love) romance that will surely knock you off your feet. I had this down in one sitting and it definitely felt a lot shorter than 200 pages. Nevertheless, a quick and easy read that any reader can find enjoyable.

This was a fantastic Christmas gift from Erica Ridley to her readers! The only drawback to it is the fact we have to wait almost a year for the next title in this fabulous series.
We readers have been waiting for Lucien’s story for a long time, and not only did it NOT disappoint; it was my favorite of the three le Duc siblings’ stories.
I absolutely loved the idea of the hero needing lessons in another language and that that kept him from socializing with the village around him. I felt it was a very interesting take on a grumpy hero. Meg was certainly not your average historical romance heroine, either! I wasn’t sure I would like her at first but I really did by the end. She was unconventional and a lot of fun.
The town of Cressmouth is always a pleasure to visit and I can’t wait for the last 4 titles next year!!

This the last story in the group boxed set of the 12 Dukes of Christmas #5-8. This story is about Lucien le duc the eldest of the le duc family and Meg Church a spinster and best friend to Eve Bastien’s bride. Lucien and his brother Bastien sold the smithy and now Lucien no longer needs to work but just wait to sail to France to claim his property back. He was studying English with his sister Desiree before her marriage to Jack Sheffington his smuggling partner. Jack’s twins Frederick and Annie are learning to speak French and asked their Uncle Lucien to learn English so they could talk to him in both languages. He met Meg Church who has had a crush in him for 6 years at the Castle library as Lucien returned the childrens books that his sister left for him to read. She flirted with him and suggested she could help him with studying English. He had a few weeks before he set sail to France and he had promised Frederick and Annie. They began studying each day together enjoying each other’s company. Meg a notorious flirt tempted Lucien and soon they were sharing passionate kisses. Meg was from France too and could speak both languages fluently. Both Lucien and Megs parents died in France. Luciens were royalist and died by the guillotine during the French Revolution. Megs parents fought on the side of the revolution for equality. Her parents died from their poor working conditions. Lucien fell in love with Meg and asked her to marry him. She said no at first but wanted him to know about her parents and how they were on the opposing side in the French Revolution. She wanted him to know so their would be no secrets between them. He knew they could put their differences behind them and start out anew together as a married couple. They went to France and he received the family land back and they built a home for their family there. They planned to travel back to Cressmouth at Christmas to visit the rest of the family.

This was requested on a whim because I couldn’t resist the synopsis.
I loved Meg. She’s outspoken and maybe a little outlandish and isn’t apologetic for it. Lucien was gruff and stoic and delightfully broken down by Meg. I loved reading their interactions and her incessant talking about sex in books. There are a lot of other characters and I’m guessing most of them are from previous books.
Plot wise, it was okay. At times, it seemed like I was expected to know about the town and the families and why there was one random castle that seemed to be a tourist attraction of sorts. My main complaint is that I didn’t really see the leap from kissing to love. There was some telling instead of showing and while the ending felt wrapped up too quickly, I did like the epilogue.
Overall, the characters kept me reading. I’m not sure if I’ll be looking into the other books, but I am mildly intrigued about them.

This was an enjoyable read. Lucien, the oldest in the family wants to return to France. However, now that his siblings have married English people, he needs to improve his English. Meg Church fills this role, of helping Lucien to improve his English. They had an attraction and although Lucien trend to fight against it, he was no match for Meg. I did find her to be quite bawdy in her speech and I did wonder if a woman would have spoken in this way, at this time. There is secret that Meg is reluctant to tell Lucien as she is unsure how it will affect their relationship. I received a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Margaret “Meg” Church is happy with her life, she lives with her cousin Jemima and her husband Allan (who own the local dairy farm), she has friends and spends most of her time at the castle surrounded by people. She is visiting her newly married friend Eve when she learns that Lucien le Duc is planning on returning to France. Meg is disappointed, she can’t imagine anyone wanting to leave Cressmouth and she has long harbored a tendre for Lucien. And even though the le Ducs have been saying they are leaving forever, she never actually thought he would go, especially now that his sister and brother have married and are staying in England.
For Lucien, the twelfth day of Christmas cannot come soon enough, he has been dreaming of returning to France and reclaiming his birthright since the day he and his siblings had at to flee 18 years ago. Lucien was raised as an aristocrat, he and his family lived in luxury, owned a fine home, vineyard and were distantly related to the King, but all that disappeared the day his parents were killed by an angry mob. Lucien, Sebastien and Desiree would have suffered the same fate if not for Jasper, an Englishman who saved them and brought them to Cressmouth. Lucien helped Jasper in the smithy and eventually took over, now that they have sold the smithy, there is nothing holding him back. Lucien has long resisted acclimating to England, even though he understands the language he refuses to speak English, but now that his sister has married and has stepchildren, Lucien agrees to try harder with his lessons. But his sister’s efforts to teach him have left him irritated and he needs a better teacher.
He is returning books to the castle library when he runs into Meg, literally. She flirts shamelessly with him and offers to help him learn to read, he is offended and leaves. Meg returns home and is dealt another blow, Jemima tells her that she is pregnant and needs the room that Meg uses for the baby. Meg is stunned, when she came to live with her cousin 8 years ago, it was a Godsend, Meg’s life had been filled with loss and heartache and she longed for a home, which she thought she had found, but now she doesn’t know what to do, she has nowhere to go, save a small plot of land in France and for her returning to France is not an option. She tells Jemima that she will be fine and starts planning her next move.
While in the park with Jemima, Meg learns that Lucien can read and realizes she insulted him, she tries to make amends and when he asks for her help in learning English, she readily agrees. They spend a lot of time together and the attraction between them grows, but with so many things potentially keeping them apart – most notably, his desire to return to France and her distain for the aristocracy, it seems like their relationship is doomed to end in heartbreak.
This installment was not as lighthearted as the previous books in the series, and while it is a well written, paced nicely, interesting and entertaining read, it is not my favorite in the series. I personally had a hard time with Meg’s very casual and frankly 21st century, cavalier attitude about intimate relations – I know that the author was trying to portray her as a woman who didn’t have to conform to “society” and therefore didn’t have to adhere to the rigid set of rules and restrictions that a debutant would have – but it just made her seem promiscuous and I can’t believe that she wouldn’t be shunned as loose woman, especially in such a small community. That said, I did enjoy the cameos with the other le Duc siblings and loved the epilogue. This is the eighth book in the series and it can easily be read as a standalone title – but you might want to read at least the two previous books – The Duke’s Bride and The Duke’s Embrace to get a bit more background on the le Duc family.

The Duke's Desire is the eighth book in the 12 Dukes of Christmas series by Erica Ridley. It can easily be read as a standalone. I think if you haven't read the others in the series you will definitely want to after you read this one.
This book was an absolute joy to read, my face was aching from so much smiling by the time I got to the end. Having read the other books in the series, and loving them all, I think it's fair to say that this one is definitely my favourite so far. It had me laughing out loud more often than not.
This is Lucien's story. One of 3, a brother and a sister, he along with them had to flee France as children to escape the revolution. Years later the opportunity has finally arisen where Lucien can return home to hopefully claim back his family's title and lands. He's never given England a real chance, nor it's people, he has just focused on the time he could leave. What he never expected was at the last minute to find himself falling for an English woman, one unlike any he had come across before.
Meg Church is that woman. She has fancied Lucien for years but never had the opportunity to do anything about it. She's a spinster and a cheeky one at that. Happy to have flings with men and not wanting to marry. When she finds herself in Lucien's arms after tripping their introduction is made. When she discovers he could do with English language lessons she is more than happy to offer her assistance. Their lessons become far more than just those in language especially for Lucien who starts to think more about his important plans for the future.
Every meeting between the two of them was such a delight to read, there was flirting, there was passion, there was fun, and occasionally a little sadness. The budding relationship between them was just so wonderful, they made a perfect couple even if their circumstances might say otherwise.
This was a lovely quick read which I wholeheartedly recommend especially if you like a more modern female lead character, one who loves to speak her mind.

No it is Lucien’s turn, the taciturn, secretive French smithy to find his happily ever after.
Meg is not the usual spinster, I would call her the feminine version of a rake or rogue, she is very free, maybe a bit too modern but she enjoys her life with no reputation to protect as a merry spinster.
Lucien has spent his life doing the right things to provide for his family but also keep his family legacy’s promise. But now it is time to going back claim what was his, it will be an alone trip as his siblings have found their other half here in England.
Up to them to mend what might keep them apart if they are willing to see what really counts.
A lovely tale with reverse roles in this couple, about where you belong and to whom.

Luc has his passage booked & will be returning to France on Twelfth night.
This is the eighth book in the series, it could be read on its own. I loved Luc & how he’d fought to remain totally French until Meg made him realise that embracing both countries wouldn’t diminish him but the opposite. Whilst I liked Meg I did feel she was too modern for the period. I found this to be an amusing but bittersweet read. I loved how the relationship between the pair grew & also how Luc's attitude changed as he came to realise what was really important

I loved Luc & how he’d fought to remain totally French until Meg made him realise that embracing both countries wouldn’t diminish him but the opposite. Whilst I liked Meg I did feel she was too modern for the period. I found this to be an amusing but bittersweet read. I loved how the relationship between the pair grew & also how Luc's attitude changed as he came to realise what was really important

She has admired the perpetually scowling Lucien for years, but he pays her no notice at all. Until suddenly he does. Soon English lessons turn into much more, but despite their growing closeness, Lucien and Meg have different priorities that may be enough to keep them apart.
This was such a sweet story. Lucien was adorably broody and vulnerable beneath his hard facade and Meg was delightfully brash and irreverent. I didn't even mind that this wasn't a steamy read because these two had such great chemistry and were so sweet together. I loved them together and they demonstrated great growth, especially for such a short novella. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Recently both his brother and sister have found spouses so he might be returning to France alone. He has remained “French” even in his speaking until...something happens that makes him think he might want to speak English, too.
Meg Church lives with her cousin and is a bit of a free spirit. She has eyed Lucien a time or two (or three or four or more) and thinks he is a hunk and a half but as he will soon leave he is more a dream to her than anything else...until...he asks her for English lessons.
Their time together is spent talking and some of the talk is...earthy, fun and had me smiling...a lot. The two have an issue that will need to be resolved before they can achieve their HEA but the journey, at least for this reader, was a treat and a half.

This entire series have been fun, quick reads that work well as palette cleansers between heavier books and The Duke's Desire was no different. While not historically accurate, the characters are so fun and quirky. I was excited to finally get around to Lucien's story as the Le Duc family have been some of my favorite characters in the series. Meg was the perfect character to bring Lucien out of his shell. Looking forward to reading the next in the series when it comes out!

This is exciting - my first ARC! Thanks Erica and NetGalley.
I requested this one because I've read the first 4 books in the series (she's releasing 4 every Christmas season, finishing the 12 next year) and fell in love with the world Erica Ridley has created. The town of Cressmouth's claim to fame is that they celebrate Christmas all year round and many sexy "dukes" in it.
The duke in this one is Lucien le Duc, eldest of the le Duc siblings who had to flee France during the revolution. His siblings settled and Napoleon defeated, he dreams of returning to claim his family's lands and position. The woman who claims him is Meg Church, who will end up surprising him in multiple ways.
I'll admit I wasn't interested in the le Duc's after reading the first 4 but right away Meg is a breath of fresh air, a woman who is comfortable in her sexuality and doesn't want to marry. (Sounds familiar!) She doesn't turn shy or missish around the object of her desire but is upfront about what she wants. She's also incredibly perceptive at seeing beneath the surface of Lucien's aloofness, which masks an incredibly loyal and caring man. They are both wonderful people who don't beat around the bush and are upfront with each other throughout the book, which is why I love this series so very much.
They are sexy and funny and witty and so much fun to spend time with. Again, I love that the story isn't dragged out with maximum angst, just with worldviews that clash and resolve by the end. Both characters learn to confront their own prejudices and to find a new way to live in the world together and that's my favourite kind of story. If it's yours, you owe it to yourself to read this.

I was really looking forward to Lucien's story. He tries so hard for his family.
The heroine was an unpleasant surprise. She is a nice person, but I wasn't expecting her to be promiscuous. She has an active sex life for a small town in 1800s England.
This story was one big dirty joke. It uses terminology of the time, even quoting from Fanny Hill.

OMG!!!! OMG!!! I would tell you to start with this one, however, that would be cheating yourself.
In book eight, Erica, has so far done the best "turgid", fun, comical, and best book I have read in years. I literally read it while working and finished reading it about 10 hours. So here goes my witty review.
Lucien Le Duc, the right Duke of Cressmouth/Christmas. The older brother, head of his shattered family, smithy, French, scared, quiet brooding MAN. These are just some of the words you will have to describe him. He is devoted to his family, hard working, and wants to return home to France. He slaves at the smutty to accomplish this. Now with that final last six weeks at hand going home is hard for him. He will be going home alone. He baby sister is now married as well as his brother. Both have said they will visit, but it is not the same.
UNTIL, a chance encounter with Meg of the Christmas Megs.
Miss Margaret Church, or Meg to most. Spinster and proud of it. She has had a hard life. Born in England to French parents, raised in France during a war that list her everything she needed most. Stability, home, health, life, and someone that looked out for her (parents). She is afraid to love as things, people, and places you care about get taken away. So she has decided to BE a spinster to keep herself safe. She has a back for organizing, loves helping people and meeting new friends. (Spoiler alert) She does the Duke of Nottingvale's Christmas invitations, since she does calligraphy. Shocking yes, but she loves to shock people. She has very private liaisons with men, OH NO say it isn't so!!!!!!
These two have one thing that needs to be overcome between them. Both of them are prejudice. Yes, I said it, they view what makes them who they are as the best and not see the other side as also good. One wants France and believes his return will give him his deepest desires. While the other believes France is the loss of her desire.
Lucien sets out to keep a promise to his sister's new children. To be able to communicate in English. Desiree had been teaching him for years but the only ones he tried to speak with in English had been his family. Yes he spoke a few words here and there to others but not much. He can understand most conversations but it gives him headaches since he has to translate it to French in his mind. The only person who knows outside of family is Meg due to bumping into her at the castle library. She figured it out quickly. So to Meg we go for help.
Meg has been in just with Lucien for years. His brooding looks, his glacial stars have made her fantasies come to life. She has just never gotten the nerve, for all her bravado, to talk with him. A chance encounter at the library is all she gets, or so she thinks. Meg chatters a mile a minute and stumbled upon the fact Lucien might understand English but has a hard time speaking it and offers help. In the process she might get her wish for him to be one of her turgid dreams.
Now lessons are fun for him and a way for her to keep busy. Who would have thought that torrid novels and secret dreams could break down walls and prejudices but it has. The witty banter, shockingly suggestive comments could have you thinking different views. These two characters are the best I have read in years. I would say more but I am afraid I would deprive you of all the enjoyment you would miss if you didn't read this book.
The only other family, and this series would be classified as FAMILY, that had the same lively shockingly great banter was the Bridgertons by Julia Quinn. If you loved Ms Whisltedowns comments on her views then this will have you laughing with this series and wanting to go to Cressmouth just to meet all of the 12 Dukes of Christmas.

Ever since Lucien le Duc was forced to flee his beloved France during the revolution, his all-consuming goal has been to recover not only his lost land and fortune. He also wants back his birthright.
Meg Church adores three things: life in a village of perennial Yuletide, and the freedom of being a spinster with no reputation to protect and Lucien le Duc.
Her attraction to Lucien isn't something that she lets anyone know although some may have guessed.
Lucien has his ticket back to France and one for his brother in his pockets but Sébastien will not be using his as he is now married to Eve.
Will Lucien ask Meg to come with him to France?
I have been waiting patiently for Lucien to get his own story and the wait was worth it. The only drawback to this series is that the remainder will release in 2020. So far we have received four book per year. The first four released in 2018 now we get books 5 - 8 and next year the series will come to it's conclusion.
This final book for this year and they have each been a joy and an excellent holiday gift to Erica's readers.
I gave this book 4.75 of 5.0 stars for plot, story line and characterization. We had previously met Lucian in books # 6 & 7 and wondered if he would remain the standoffish brother or if there was someone that could make this tiger change his stripes.
It's going to be a long wait for the final four books of the series but I'm sure we all will enjoy them when they arrive.

This is my favorite Christmas series, hands down. I always try to read a few of these for the Christmas season, to help get me in the mood for the holiday, and this one did not disappoint.
I love how all of the characters are intertwined, the continuity of the village and the people in it. I also love that they are novella length, so I can usually squeeze more than one in for each Christmas.
Since the characters are all brought up in other books, when they are the H and h of their own book, a lot of their backstory has already been developed, though you could read these out of order, it is better to read them in order, so you can have the full effect of feeling like you know the H and h a little already before diving into the book. The novella length can sometimes work against character development, but since everyone is connected and in books prior to the one they star in, it's not a huge issue.
Also, the setting is the same and is a character in its own right. I would love to visit a town of perpetual Christmas and get to stay in a castle! That sounds so lovely.
While there was one on page pre-marital sex scene, it wasn't overly descriptive and I think that it was the H's first time was glossed over a tad too much. Nice roll-reversal with her being the one who enjoyed a sex life she was in charge of and him being the V.
Despite that one scene, the h and H did "quote" from some of the more lurid books of the day. She was a big reader of those types of romance novels and flowery descriptions of what she would like to do abounded in this book, so not a squeaky clean romance.
4, solid and I am definitely keeping on with this series, stars. Recommended if you enjoy historical romance that isn't super clean, but is a lot of fun.

Meg loves the town of Christmas and her independence as unmarried woman. She does enjoy a one-night stand here and there with the tourists, but the only man that makes her heart beat is the sullen, grumpy eldest of the le Duc brothers.
Lucien can think of only one thing: his impending return to France to reclaim the property and social status his family lost in the french revolution, making him and his siblings searching refuge in England many years ago.
Since his siblings have married English spouses (a no-go for him, absolutely!), he decides to finally learn English in order to communicate with his nieces and nephews. As it happens Meg would be available as a tutor. She has some secrets in her past he better not find out about ...
This was a cute novella set in the town of Christmas, where the Holiday Season goes on year round. As all the other novellas in this series it is a stand alone.
I would have preferred the environment being more "noble", I missed the stilted speech, haughty Dukes, and strict social rules of a typical regency romance. This being the romance between two nobodies (socially), it could be just as well set contemporary.
Unfortunately the main protagonists didn't do it for me, either. The heroine was a vulgar blabber mouth with (for the time period) shockingly loose morals, the male protagonist really flat characterized, arrogant and unlikable.
Lucien can think of only one thing: his impending return to France to reclaim the property and social status his family lost in the french revolution, making him and his siblings searching refuge in England many years ago.

Lucien Le Duc has worked in the smithy for 18 years toiling away until the day he can return to France with his brother and sister. The French Revolution has his parents killed and he vowed to protect his siblings any way he could. That meant relocating to England, specifically Cressmouth. The day has finally come to go back to France and reclaim his family's land, but his siblings have made love matches in Cressmouth and will not returning with him. While he waits for the day his ship will sail, he meets Meg Church, the local spinster who is witty, outrageous and intriguing. When Meg offers to tutor Lucien in English, he has no idea his life is about to upended once again.
The witty banter that comes out of Meg's mouth is outrageous, unexpected and so very entertaining. It catches Lucien off guard and yet draws him to Meg like a moth to the flame. The last Le Duc is resisting falling in love, but sometimes what the heart wants wins out against all odds. This was another delightful story in the 12 Dukes of Christmas series. I can't wait to read the next one.

What a hysterical romance. Such a quirky risqué heroine with her sexual metaphors. It was too funny. Meg's character was a delight to read. She is refreshing. Nothing like any other character so far in the series. She has an interesting family background that surprised me. As for the brooding Lucien his heart was touched by the innocence of his niece and nephew who were learning French and that was when he decided to really learn English. Finally, when Meg and Lucien got together for tutoring, she caused his imagination go wild with her sexual metaphorical talking. When Meg's background was revealed I truly felt her pain and worry. The more Lucien was around Meg the more he smiled and tried harder to learn English. Their attraction was inevitable. It culminated with Lucien sharing with Meg his deepest feelings shocking her. Would he stay in Cressmouth or leave for France? Could she accept his dreams while holding on to hers? I received an Advanced Readers Copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Lucien has a goal and nothing is going to distract him from returning to France to claim his inheritance. Unfortunately, he makes a promise to his young nephew and niece to learn English, something he has stood against the whole time he has resided in Cressmouth, where Christmas is a year-round event. His quest takes him to the Marlowe Castle library where he literally runs into the outrageous Miss Meg Church and before he knows it, she is tutoring him in English. Lucien is uptight and controlled, whereas Meg spills every thought, much to Lucien's bewildered amusement. The unlikely couple have more in common than initially meets the eye, but it could just be that their very heritage will stand in the way of them finding happiness. This well written novella has laugh out loud moments, but there is also an underlying pain as both Lucien and Meg have to deal with their past. Having met these characters in previous books in the series, I enjoyed reading about their story. I received a copy of this book through NegGalley and this is my voluntary and honest review.

Meg Church was born to French parents and was raised in France during the war and time of turmoil. She longs for things she knows will just be taken away because it has in the past. So instead she embraces her spinsterhood. Secret liasons (oh yes!), loves meeting new people and helping those she can and a gift for organization all make up her person but also she has secretly admired Lucien for years.
As these two come together, there is so much humourous banter, laugh out loud moments, differing views on life but also an amazing attraction that yearns to break the barrier between them.
Prepare to be enchanted and not wanting this story to end! Well done!

Secret liasons (oh yes!), loves meeting new people and helping those she can and a gift for organization all make up her person but also she has secretly admired Lucien for years.
As these two come together, there is so much humourous banter, laugh out loud moments, differing views on life but also an amazing attraction that yearns to break the barrier between them.
Prepare to be enchanted and not wanting this story to end! Well done!

The Duke's Desire is the eighth book in Erica Ridley's 12 Dukes of Christmas series. Lucien le Duc, former blacksmith in the town of Cressmouth, is eager to return home to France after years of hiding away due to the French revolution. Meg Church is happily free of her miserable childhood in France and loves the freedom that her spinster life offers. She's admired Luc from afar, and he's avoided everyone English since day one.
This entry in the Dukes of Christmas series offers the organic romance I've been looking for in these stories. The book is still fast-paced, but the passage of time allows us to experience Meg and Luc's friendship—and love—as the two grow closer together. There's still plenty of humor (Meg especially is outrageously hilarious) despite the fact that both characters have high personal burdens to overcome. Meg and Luc grew up in the shadows of their respective family histories. They need to figure out what they're willing to risk to hold onto—or shed—those pasts.

This has to be the funniest story I have read in a while & especially when all the off color, straight forward humor was by the female in the prospective couple. Meg Church has lived in Cressmouth for 6 years & has stayed with her cousin & her husband since her arrival. She is 28 yrs. old, a spinster (but not an innocent one), which makes her happy & she has had a crush on the smithy, Lucien le Duc since she first laid eyes on him but they have never spoken as he is so surly.
Lucien le Duc escaped from France after his noble parents were killed & he came to Cressmouth with his younger brother & sister & had taken the responsibility to provide for them as his father make him swear to do before he died. Now his sister & brother are married & he finally has enough money to return to France & take back his family's properties, etc. He had never bother leaning much English until his niece & nephew made deal with him - if he would learn English, they would learn French so when they went to France they could speak the language & when Lucien came to visit in Cressmouth, he could speak English. Now he needed a tutor & oh what a tutor Meg Church would be. She is full of suggestive & downright blatant statements as to what she would like him to do to her - she made any of London's best rakes & rogues pale in comparison & his reactions were hilarious. Needless to say, this has a HEA & a lovely epilogue but what a fun trip it was getting there!
I have loved every trip to Cressmouth/Christmas & I am sad each time I have to pack my bags to leave again. I was gifted the Advanced Reader Copy of this book & all opinions are my own & have been voluntarily given.

Why do we love those stories whose characters are most unlikely to be happily ever after?
Meg Church is brilliant. A spinster who likes the life she has but, on the other hand, hides a crush for a Frenchman who always dreamed of the day she would be able to return to his country.
But behold, two of his siblings found their happiness in the arms of English citizens.
Lucien decides to improve his English, and it's Meg who will be his teacher.
But during class, probably between a charming French and a sassy British, there would be much more to teach and to learn than a language...
