A truly wonderful book! The stories are from the heart They made me laugh and sometimes cry.
As a 24 yr Air Force retiree, I recognized myself in many of these stories. It took me awhile to read because I savored these stories and stopped to think about them.
Great stuff! I was proud to serve my country and I am also very proud to recommend this book.
I am a long-time Chicken Soup fan. All editions are a blend of short, inspirational stories with a particular theme. The stories are always emotional for me, some leave me in tears, others make me smile or outright laugh. I'm touched by the kindness of strangers, the wisdom, love, or the resilience of those the story is about. I usually read one story early in the day, and think about it throughout, sometimes summarizing the essence to others as I go about my business. Most lift my spirits and remind me of the good things in my own life. I have quite a collection still waiting to be read. A few months ago I chose Chicken Soup for the Veteran's Soul: Stories to Serve the Pride and Honor the Courage of Our Veterans with the thought of having finished reading this by Veteran's Day/Remembrance Day. I made my deadline and cannot recommend this collection enough. Of the many of the series that I've read this book certainly makes my top 5. This collection relays heroic deeds, acts of compassion and empathy, fears confronted, and victories attained. As stated in one summary I read "This is a wonderful tribute to anyone who gave in service to their country, as well as to their families". It would make a good read for our younger generation, those that know little about the sacrifices these men, women and their families made for our country. I would have offered up to book to someone interested in reading this but dropped it in water, soaked. I did let it dry and continued on just the same. I always like to highlight one story from each edition, though choosing just one is tough. I wish I could quote it here. Honey Man - Robin Lim pg. 312.
A Standout In The Series I am a fan of the Chicken Soup book series, but for me, this one is a standout. As an almost 30-year Veteran of the US Army, I could really relate to these stories. Written before my own Global War on Terror, the book focuses on narratives from WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, and Desert Storm. From a Vietnam nurse's “Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep” to a WWII Soldier's “The Most Beautiful Man In The World,” these stories will touch your heart and stir up your patriotism. As a man, who will someday have an American Flag draped over my casket, I was especially moved by reading this book. We should always remember that the United States is the land of the free because it is also the home of the brave. Get a copy for yourself, or better yet, get a copy and give it to a Veteran and say, "Thank you..."
Wonderful stories and personal glimpses of the world of the veteran. It gives one the courage to say "I am not alone. Others have felt what I feel now." It has allowed me to come to terms with some of ghosts that walk in my dreams.
As a retired Navy veteran, I wanted to read Elgin Staples story, and it's in this book. As I read this book I was thinking "Why weren't' we taught about these heroes in boot camp?". I cried a few times and laughed a few times. I enjoyed this book.
And another incredible "Chicken Soup For The Soul" book. I salute Jack Canfield, and his AMAZING staff and various AMAZING contributing writers! A heart felt "Thanks" to all of you!!
Great book about veterans, their lives and families.
I loved the short stories. What is there not to like about reading short stories about our heroes that served in all theaters of war. Many great stories are there waiting tho be discovered. What as a wonderful concept! I highly recommend this book to all.
My story "I Have the Coffee On" is in this book. The story is about the canteen at the UP train station during WWII and my friend, John, who was an airman at the time.
Fabulous stories of and mostly by our veterans. Most of the stories are tear jerkers. They are so realistic about what they went through. I enjoyed it immensely and will probably read it again.
