An enjoyable short story by Todd Lockwood. One feels there is a much larger story here fighting to get out.

I read this in the anthology "Unfettered".

Daen is searching for a specific berry for the priests. They use them for ink to tattoo the warriors and their dragons. Daen winds up lost, and then he meets a strange little girl. She tells him where to find the berry but runs off scared when he talks of the war that his people are fighting. She disappears and he eventually finds his way back to his village, only to find it under siege.
