Cuba has stared death in the face throughout its rocky history, and most of the time it has gazed into the eyes of death and smiled. This was an interesting history, but I'm not sure who Captivating History is or the people behind it. This book felt fairly partial, but it's hard for me to say since I didn't know much about Cuba's history to start with.
Kindle unlimited, in my running list I also have the one about John F. Kennedy here, but that's just be trying to somewhat at least run a timeline in my head

With the recent demonstrations against the communist regime in Cuba, I was interested in learning more about the island nation. I found this book (or rather, collection of four volumes) and it is a decent overview that provides a baseline level of knowledge from which a reader can dive deeper. The author is clearly passionate about history, and it really is written in an engaging way, avoiding the stale phraseology of many a history textbook. However, its list of sources is somewhat brief and consists mostly of online sources, including Wikipedia. In addition, this author is to sympathetic to Fidel Castro, glossing over his many atrocities and writing in glowing terms about his healthcare and education initiatives. The author even goes so far as to use the word "heroic" to describe the late dictator. In brief, if you are seeking a general summary of Cuban history, this book will suffice. For a comprehensive history, however, don't rely on it.
I see this as something that is meant to provide a starting point for one's study of Cuban history, and as such I will not fault it for being simple. In fact, this guide's simplicity (and somewhat lack of nuance) makes it easily understandable even to someone like me (who did not have a firm background in Cuban history).
With that said, I have noticed that there are some minor overlaps in info between the 4 parts of this guide. While this may help bolster understanding of the topics in relation to each other, I feel that more focus on the immediate topic being discussed in each respective part might make this even more valuable as a learning tool.
Before reading this book I knew nothing about Cuban history and this was a good introduction for me. The books are informative and engaging. My reason for giving 3 stars is that I found the 4-in-1 format slightly repetitive, but it did reinforce the key events.
