DICE - Duration, Integrity of performance, Commitment, Effort. This tells us how well a change effort is going, according to Sirkin et al.

Duration - interestingly, a long project with frequent reviews does better than a short project with few reviews. Celebrating and noticing milestones is vital to a project working out, especially milestones of learning and understanding.

Performance. Finding talented team members through asking around is a good tip.

Commitment - change needs commitment both from the boss and to the new systems.

Effort - most people already do way too much, so change efforts must consider the burden of new systems and requirements. Too much change and it won't work.

So the authors calculate the DICE scores of a business doing a new project in a rather unobjective way: they ask how often they review/celebrate, how great is the performance, how committed people are, and how much realistic effort can be put into the change, and thereby measure the likelihood of the success of the program.

It's brilliant, simple, subjective, and direct.
