The Artisan and the Duke

Gregory St. Claire, Duke of Thornton, never cared much for society. He flew in the face of tradition whenever he could, but from the moment he met the strange artisan shouting out a rallying call, his curiosity is piqued. Jules Kelley's opinion of high society is pretty low. When a noble playing commoner stumbles upon her and gets wind of her secret, she is all but certain that things could not get worse! Together they stumble into a mystery surrounding a fire that should never have happened, and get pulled into the darker corners of society and forbidden love.

The Captain of Her Betrayed Heart

After what should have been one of the happiest nights of her life turned tragic, Gwyn decides to run away from England and everything she knew and loved. Four years ago, Jack decided to join the army, when the woman he had loved fiercely had fled with no sign as to why. Now it's time Jack returns home, to find himself in an unexpected situation. The announcements of Jack's impending betrothal and Gwyn's own ardent suitor seem to mean the end for everything that Jack and Gwyn might rekindle... but can this love really be buried?

The Mystery of the Hunted Lady

Vera Ladislaw, a third generation Polish aristocrat, lives a quiet life in England, with her father dabbling in political reform and agricultural innovations, and her mother always on the hunt for a good husband. When the unthinkable happens, Vera's life is torn apart. Lord James Stanley, despite his extravagant balls and his rakish ways, is a rather lonely figure. When he finds a confidant in the alter ego of young Vera, a strong bonding is to come. Vera finds there is more to him than meets the eye and soon finds herself caught in a complicated web of romance, intrigue, and danger.

Each book features a standalone, clean and sweet story of approximately 80,000 words. No cheating, no cliffhangers, and a sweet happily ever after.

I was positive I had read and reviewed the books in this collection. Wrong. I have read and loved them all, but have only reviewed two. Let me remedy that right now, if I can.

These three novels represent different aspects of Regency life, and each is a winner. My favourite is The Artisan and the Duke, but the other two—The Captain of
Her Betrayed Heart and The Mystery of the Hunted Lady are both winners as well.

The Artisan and the Duke, by Abigail Agar.
This is one of the most exciting Regency novels I have ever read. It bounces from situation to situation with no letup.

The premise of the book is believable but for one thing. I have a hard time believing that the heroine could be taken for a boy, and that she is a mason by trade. But if you refuse to let that distract you the book unfolds like a mystery and steadily from crisis to crisis.

Jules (Julia) Kelley has been trained as an apprentice mason, and is a member of the Mason's Guild. Gregory St. Claire, the Duke of Thornton, is a man who though titled, has little sympathy for the aristocracy. From the minute he meets Jules rallying her compatriots against unjust aristocratic actions he is hooked. When he discovers the young man is really a young woman everything in his world begins to change.

He rescues her from the Guard following a suspicious fire in which many young child laborers burn to death. He convinces her that becoming engaged to him will help her to bring the perpetrators of the fire to justice. From that point on his family and hers become inevitably intertwined.

But that's really just the start of the story. The engagement is really a ruse to hide the fact that the duke is investigating not only the fire, but the justice system, and members of his own aristocratic family who have designs on his title.

First his brother, a survivor of the Napoleonic Wars is kidnapped. He himself is attacked. Jules, now his wife, is kidnapped and transferred from workhouse to workhouse so he is unable to find her.

The whole situation becomes so complicated that it is apparent some really powerful lords are working not only to thwart him, but to destroy his family.

I read through each set of difficulties thinking after each that his crisis was solved--until the next crisis occurred and he had to stickhandle his way through again. I thoroughly enjoyed the action, and followed the story breathlessly to its conclusion. As Regency Romances go, this one is better than most. Kudos to author Abigail Agar.

The Captain of her betrayed Heart, by Abigail Agar.
This is a story about jumping to conclusions without proper evidence, about misunderstandings, and about downright deceit. It's a love story, yes, but with such a tangled background there is a strong desire to kick the participants hard for their mistaken perceptions, stuborn misconceptions, and refusal to do anything about them.

The captain is Captain Jack Shelton. The Betrayed Heart is Gwyn Stanton. The deceiver is Jack's brother, Henry. The plot is so complex, the deceptions so credible, that there is no way I can review them without giving away the whole story.

This is a tale that begins slowly with a single misperception that builds to an incredible climax. Behind it all is a story of manners, manners that allow the protagonists to blindly give truth to false perceptions that are then perpetuated in the stifling atmosphere of English formal country life. It is an absolute miracle that the two former childhood lovers are actually reunited in the end.

All the while I was reading this novel I had the greatest desire to shake both the former childhood sweethearts, to make them come to their senses and see the deceptions that were occurring right in front of their eyes. I guess that was the intent of novelist Abigail Agar. I persisted in reading so that when alll was revealed I was not so much pleased as relieved that things were finally coming around.

All in all, this was a frustrating read, but definitely one that testifies to the skill of the novelist. Held me spellbound in an all-night read.

The Mystery of the Hunted Lady, by Abigail Agar.
Vera Ladislaw is the daughter of an impoverished Polish noble who is framed for a terrible crime. Terrified, she disguises herself as a boy and seeks employment at the storied Avonside Manse where she meets the lonely Lord James Stanley and becomes his confidant.

But her secret cannot be kept long, and when it is revealed she becomes entangled in a web of lies, deceit, and love from which there seems no escape. This in another of author Abigail Agar’s exciting novels that crosses the boundaries between romance and mystery and leaves readers guessing at the outcome every step of the way.

These novels have already demonstrated their worth when they were published as stand-alones so if you haven’t read them already, like I have, this is a golden opportunity to buy a cornucopia if
Regency riches at one go. Take this opportunity to buy yourself hours of delightful reading and make the plunge. You won’t regret it.

The Artisan And The Duke

A 🔥Fire Brings Them Together

London, June 1819
A factory 🔥fire brings Jules💃💋, a labor activist, and Gregory🐺🍆🌋, a Duke, together with a common goal.

When Jules' father dies, there is no male heir to inherit, so they lose everything and she becomes the male breadwinner in her family, in order to keep it together. She becomes a mason's apprentice, which was her father's trade, her mother sews, and her two sisters also have menial jobs. All to keep a roof over their heads.

Jules💃💋 spends time in the square promoting and speaking about fair labor practices, and that ends up getting the attention of the guard. They don't want the common people to have decent working conditions or earn a decent wage, so raids are conducted, rounding up and arresting dissenters.

Gregory🐺🍆🌋,the Duke of Thornton, sees Jules💃💋 at the site of the factory 🔥fire helping to carry bodies💀 from the ashes. He sees a short handsome lad but soon he discovers Jules💃💋 is a young woman and he is infatuated. The 🔥fire seems to be arson for insurance purposes!
When the guard goes on another raid to arrest labor dissenters, he convinces her and her mother and sisters to move to his townhouse. He will tell society that Jules💃💋 is his betrothed💍! That kills two birds with one stone. It helps Jules💃💋 get away from poverty and gets Gregory's mother off his back about getting married.
It's a fake fiance the old fashioned way!

The Captain of Her Betrayed Heart💔
A Misunderstanding Causes So Much Heartache💔

Why can't people just talk to each other instead of jumping to conclusions that alter their entire life?

Well, if we didn't have these two young conclusion jumpers, there would be no need for This book📑.

Sixteen year old Gwyn💃💋 has just returned to England from India and runs to see her beloved Jack🐺, who lives in the estate next door. When she sees a young woman laughing with him on a balcony, she assumes the very worst of her young man.

Gwyn💃💋 goes back to her home and tells her mother a big fat lie in order to save face, she thinks. She tells her mother she wants to return immediately to India, and makes up a suitor there. It's a complete fabrication.

Jack🐺, the true love of her life, tries to see her, but her mother denies him, relating Gwyn's lies to him as an excuse.
Devastated, Jack🐺 joins the Army. The idiot, jealous Gwyn💃💔 has ruined both their young lives in an uninformed, spoiled fit of anger.
Four years later, both of them are back home in England. Jack is home from The Army, and Gwyn💃💋 has to come back and take charge of The family estate. She is also betrothed to a sergeant, a man she doesn't love.

Jack's older brother, Henry, in line to become the duke, is also a meddler. Could be bad, could be good.

If you love angsty 📚books, you will love this novel because it will have your heart 💕tied up in knots! I liked this well written romance💘, but it has too much angst for me.

THE ARTISAN AND THE DUKE

SINK THOSE CLAWS DEEP!!!
Oh my goodness gracious. This is one, over-the-top, brows drawn almost lost in the hair line. Taĺk about a spin that spurs the gossips tongue a wagging. This is one page turning, explosive bombshell that you will not be able to put down. I read straight through. The feelings are in such a tizzy you're not sure if you should run hard and fast or crawl under something to hide. The characters are intriguing and complex with a realism that doesn't go unnoticed. The two main characters were attracted to one another but tried to ignore it. When the doors finally close behind them, they realized this was just the tip of the ice burg. Things swept up in a corner, wouldn't stay hidden under the rug much longer. You have all the components to make this phenomenal read the master piece that it deserves. Action packed, fast paced, nerve racking and nailbiting all in one amazing tale. The scenes were so vividly detailed and descriptive that it gives the illusion you were right there in the middle of ground zero with them. Twists and turns abound with danger closing in. How much longer will they survive? Is the next door that opens be the last one for them. Abigail draws us deep into this world she created until nothing else exists except this adventure before us. She has a gift of bringing her imagination alive so that we, her readers enjoy the intrigue and danger with such splendor that's up close and personal. Everything appears as if it's In 3D Technicolor that hooks you from the start and reels you in for the duration. Remarkable job Abigail, thanks for sharing this awesome read with us.

THE CAPTAIN OF HER BETRAYED HEART

ONE AWESOME SLAM DUNK!!!
Talk about stabbing someone while their back is turned. This tale is one action packed, fast paced, hard hitting, backstabbing, betrayal, deceitful, suspense filled with selfishness reigning over all. The twists and turns, ups and downs, lies and mistrust have everyone looking over their shoulder, ready for a friend to stab them also. The characters are portrayed in such a realistic fashion that it's easier to relate to them. Their personalities are complex, well developed and believable. The qualities and traits are vast and varied in a way they play off one another with such a perfect balance. You feel as though you can just reach out and touch them. The scenes are graphic and detailed in such a vivid scheme it paints a picture with such realism your drawn deeper. Lady Abigail wields her words as skillfully and precise as a surgeon with his scalpel. Remarkable job Lady Abigail, thanks for sharing this awesome read with us.

THE MYSTERY OF THE HUNTED LADY

ONE HEART POUNDING READ!!!
Man, this just jumped right into the action. All the excitement, fear, love, loss, intrigue, nailbiting, nerve racking, adrenaline pumping, pulse racing, page turning bombshell that captivates from the start. THE ARTISAN AND THE DUKE: This is unlike any other Regency novel I have ever read. I absolute loved it. This has sadness, tragedy, danger. betrayal, kidnappings, a betrothal, a wedding, family pride, manipulation, deceit, greed, murder and a clean romance. Julia has been impersonating a man named Jules. She is an artisan and speaks out for fairness and justice. She had to go into disguise in order to support her mother and her two young sisters after her father died. One day when Jules was out talking to the crowd, a man dressed as a commoner approached her. She could see that he was not a commoner. Gregory St. Claire, the Duke of Thornton, was use to dressing as a commoner to listen and observe how to help the working class. He came across Jules talking and wanted to help in some way. He did not know Jules was a young woman. He saved Jules from being arrested. He then found out he was a she. He felt that Jules could not stay there for fear the guards would come back for her. So he arranged to keep her family safe. But he had to get the family out of London to his estate in the country. What an exciting tale of the fight for justice, looking for the root of betrayal, incarceration and the bloom of love. I highly recommend it.
THE CAPTAIN OF HER BETRAYED HEART: This is a well-rounded novel. I enjoyed reading it all the way through. It took about five hours to read and was moderately paced. The characters were developed and personable. Very realistic. The simple storyline of two young people destined to be together, thwarted by misunderstandings resulting in unnecessary heartbreak. At that time, a woman did not have much control over the matches her parents may arrange as opposed to the men who could choose whom they wed. However, male or female. both had to put family first. This story is about trust, loyalty, family, betrayal, lies, deceit, secrets, scandals and true love. There are no open bedroom scenes. This is a clean romance. I do recommend this book. You will not be dissapointed. As a bonus, there is a link at the end for an extended epilogue. This is well worth the time.
THE MYSTERY OF THE HUNTED LADY: Vera Ladislaw, of Polish aristocracy. her family forced to leave their country because of Prussians; she is one and twenty. She witnesses the murder of her father and then the murderers kill her mother and their maid. She runs to town to get the constable. However, come morning, the newspaper already posted the tragedy and claimed that she committed the crimes. With the help of new friends, Mr. Fielding and Mrs. Plimpton, Vera became Fidel Fielding, manservant to Lord James Stanley of Avonside Manse. Vera's character, besides the simpering mishish whimpering adoring female that she was, turned out to be a brave woman. She withstood being a young man and found freedom in that role. As a young man, she was able to speak her mind more often. Working for Lord Stanley gave Vera time to work with Mr. Fielding in finding the murderers. Then Vera was discovered. She was arrested and thrown in jail. Lord Stanley found his way to her and then told her their acquaintance had come to an end. This was a very suspenseful story of loss of family, grief, new love, and the power of loyalty, truth and justice. I really enjoyed reading this book. I highly recommend it.

Chronically of Love and Devotion

The book included 3 stories. The Artisan And The Duke, The Captain of Her Betrayed Heart, and The Mystery Of The Hunted Lady. I’m not good at writing reviews, but I will be honest on if I enjoy a book or not. I did really enjoy all 3 books and they kept my interest. The reason for 4 stars is that the last book annoyed me a little. There was too much of saying ‘My Love’, and I felt is was just too much.

Best Story Yet!

I have written a reviews of other of your books Abigail. It's been a fun to see your story telling skills improve with each book. Thank you again for a clean story's with enough love, struggles and romance that leave out the explicit details that do nothing to enhnce the tale you're telling. This series has been really enjoyable and I never hesitate to order your books. I'm on to the next book! Thanks again for sharing your stories with us all.

Okay

I don't know if it's just because I had such a connection to a previously read book, or if I just am not in the mood for a novel such as this one- but I did not feel the pull to this novel that I normally do when I am reading a new novel. I will definitely have to try again later.

Absurd

The writing of the first and second book was beyond tiresome. I really expected better. The characters are flighty, there's no building of romance or any at all really. The characters are flighty and change their minds on a whim...with very little to go on. I found d myself rolling my eyes at most of the dialogue. I didn't can make it to the third book.

#1The Artisan and the Duke

A young Duke is sick of being bombarded by young ladies wanting him to marry them.
That is until he runs across a young man in the street, only to find it's really a young woman in male attire.
Ok the electric attraction sparks, what happens next, well you need to read this dramatic episode for yourself.

#2 The Captain of Her Betrayed Heart
This is book that is compelling reading for it's story, but frustrating in the lack of correctness to detail.
It reads as if an American had written about events in Regency England, where the correct protocols were looked at by an outsider and their words he used. For example: date for the evening, instead of her escort. Dancing numerous dances with the one partner, who wasn't engaged or family members.
Although, the overall appeal of the story is appealing, this departure from the period's known customs, causes myself to question if any real investigation into the period being portrayed has ever been done by the author.

#3 The Mystery of the Hunted Lady

This is a great yarn, with some interesting characters.
A story of a miscarriage of justice and bureaucratic bunglers, more interested in their own self importance, than ensuring that the guilt of person is verified, before conviction.

I enjoyed all three of these stories. The characters were engaging and entertaining. My only "con" which really isn't a deterrent, but the storyline was kind of dragged out in each, but actually if it wasn't it would be a very short read. Overall, I would high recommend this author and I am definitely going to look at her other books. Very entertaining reads, all three.
