Volume 1 of Reading Between the Lines will take you through 181 Old Testament Bible readings. These devotions will point you to Jesus, warm your heart and encourage you to keep going as a Christian. "I love this book! Glen has a knack for looking at familiar biblical texts from unfamiliar angles, and he's done it again here. Pithy yet profound, easy to read yet deeply challenging, Reading Between the Lines uncovers a multitude of surprising ways in which the Scriptures speak about Jesus." ~ Steve Jeffery , Minister of Emmanuel Church in North London, and co-author of Pierced for Our Transgressions "It is so easy to fall into an over-familiar reading of the Bible after many years of Bible reading. Glen's great gift is to show us what we are reading, to bring sparkle back to these wonderful Bible phrases. For those new to the Bible, it helps them to see how this book has shaped our daily language. For many people I know these studies helped them to venture out into new territory in the Bible, those parts that they didn't usually read. This is an excellent book and a great gift." ~ Paul Blackham , Pastor of St Crispins, Highbury and Author of Bible Explored
Glen directs the evangelistic charity Speak Life. He is an ordained Anglican who writes, speaks, and makes media to equip the church and reach beyond it. He is married to Emma and is the author of 7 books, including 321, Long Story Short and The Gift.
I found this a refreshing devotional. So Christ focussed for Old Testament readings, and many readings gave such a different perspective on the days reading than I had heard before - in a very helpful way! I read this devotional over the year. That meant I didn't have to read every day - every 2nd day got me through - which worked for me. While you don't read every chapter of the old testament, you read a good representation of it and something from almost every book - the poor old minor prophets got the worst cut. But it's good and it's definitely worth a read!
Wowwww this was 181 days (probably longer let’s be real) of delightful readings in God’s Word!! A very helpful book for anyone who would like to read the Old Testament and have some help in how to see Jesus in it! Would recommend
Overall a helpful book. I have been reading it with my husband. We felt, however, that Scrivener 'shoe horns' Christ into every possible text, sometimes where, we felt, it wasn't appropriate. For instance, when commenting on the 23rd Psalm Scrivener says the speaker is Christ, referring to the Father as His Shepherd. This did not sit easily with us. Surely Jesus is not a sheep and refers to Himself in John's Gospel as the good shepherd. At this point we gave up on this volume and have moved on to the New Testament devotions where I anticipate there will be fewer problems.
A fantastic and in depth overview of the Old Testament, in a conversational tone which is effective, engaging and suitably encouraging. The analysis is presented in a digestible format and the book is cleverly arranged so you can take it in your own pace- which is ideal for modern day believers who may struggle to fit Biblical reading into their everyday lives. Would highly recommend.
This is one of the best devotional books I’ve read. Scrivener consistently points readers to Christ as he works his way through the Old Testament. Reading Between the Lines, Vol. 1, is clearly a work of love and great effort and I’m thankful for it.
Initially wasn't sure what I made of this as a devotional but actually really enjoyed it! Some interesting depth in there, especially in the passages he chose to focus on.
I enjoyed this book as it walked through most of the Old Testament and pointed the reader to Christ. Was a great morning devotional for me and am excited to start the NT book tomorrow
