In 2008, a middle-aged airplane mechanic, stressed to the breaking point, took off from his California home and family to ride an old bicycle across America, and Russia and China; all the way to Hong Kong. No athlete, he struggles with the physical and mental challenges while immersed in the changing cultures. A boisterous unrestrained tale of the world's people, their lives, their struggles and generosity. And the discovery, that once lifted, the burdens we carry, are what centers us all.
Born in L.A., raised in Carson City NV. I'd always lived a life obsessed by motorcycles and bicycles. As a young man I joined the Air Force and in one form or other have made my way through adulthood as an aircraft mechanic. I live in Patterson CA, and work in San Francisco. Married with two boys, now grown and gone, the aspirations to write didn't drive the story of "Briansride." The adventure was so large that notes had to be kept, the tales too entertaining to not write it down, I had to tell the world. I've always enjoyed telling the stories of a crazy weekend at a concert or a race track, I've always been happy with my ability to write an engaging paragraph. I've immensly enjoyed this project, combining the two. The greatest fulfillment is that someday, long after I'm gone, a distant descendant can hold this book in their hands. They can live a snapshot of the world in 2008, and perhaps understand something of a crazy, thoughtful, and curious Uncle they never knew.
Briansride – This is my first read by this cyclist and I found his story interesting. I liked that he stayed in places for a day or so, usually, and invested the time in the offered friendships and those experiences. Brian tells of his thoughts before and throughout his journey; the good and the bad.
He does a good job with describing his experiences, as well as the different cultures he touched. The people that befriended him along the way is probably the best parts of his journey. I appreciated glimpses into their world and lives and attitudes. I just got this book on a whim since it is different from what I have been reading. 4*
A must read for any armchair adventurers. A middle aged guy, an old bike and a dream. A cross continents ride from California to Hong Kong.one of the most enjoyable reads I've had in a long time.
Very detailed book of a man’s trip riding a bike from California to Hong Kong... A different way to look at the world. And all the people in it... can’t imagine riding a bike that far and dealing with everything he dealt with..
