Solving his sister’s murder is Mountie Jacob Henry’s only priority—until his daring helicopter rescue of Grace Finch leaves them stranded in the Canadian wilderness. Now with a storm raging and escaped convicts in pursuit, Jacob and Grace must rely on each other for survival. But when Jacob discovers Grace’s deadly secret, can he look past it in the fight for their lives?
Maggie K. Black is an award-winning journalist with a thirst for adventure. She's lived in the American South, Europe and Middle East, and left a piece of her heart in each. She now makes her home in Canada, where she writes stories that make her heart race, chases her dog around the park and shares her adventures with her one true love and and their two daughters.
Woohoo!!!! This was such a fun read!!! Kinda like Constable Benton Fraser (remember TV show Due South about the RCMP officer in Chicago?) meets Lois Lane and stuff happens. A lot of stuff! I was bouncing off my couch in delighted euphoria, snorting and guffawing all the way through.
Opening scene -- Grace is in a spot of trouble but she's handling it and then our swoony hero comes rappelling out of a helicopter to save the day. Only our scrappy award winning crime journalist isn't impressed with his take charge attitude. These two are a riot together! I love how she saves his hide as many times as he saves hers! They make the perfect team when they stop fighting it. Who knew being stranded in the wilderness while evading three escaped convicts could be so much fun?
Jacob has noticed Grace at crime scenes and the attraction is there though he's definitely not in the market for romance but he would have enjoyed "a new professional and collegial friendship." ( p 33) Snort -- yes, he's the kind of guy who can use collegial in a sentence. But that's not happening since Grace is a reporter and Jacob thinks "they're like carrion birds picking over the lives of others." (p 83) A little bit of a chasm to bridge between these two, eh?
Lots of action and adventure and creative take-downs! And, since this is the last book in the True North series, Black has provided a fitting blockbuster series wrap-up that brings all the Henry brothers (and their lady loves) together in a very fitting salue to the spirit of these heroes and heroines.
Other random things I loved about this book. Grace is biracial -- Afro-Carribean Canadian mother and German Canadian father. Jacob and Grace are a little bit older than the usual LI/LIS heroes and heroines. He's just shy of forty and she's mid thirties. And there are lots of inspirational quotes a reader can apply in her own life. Like:
"Mom always told me that forgiveness has a lot of layers," she said."That it was a process and not something that happened all at once. She says sometimes you have to forgive the same person for the same sin, over, and over, and over again in new and deeper ways." (p 122)
and
"Sometimes prayer doesn't change the world around us. It just changes us." (p 92)
This is book four in the True North Heroes series. It is the first in this series that I have read and I had no issues following along, however I feel I missed some history of the Henry family and probably some good books as well.
This book is full of suspense, mystery, trust, romance and more.
Jacob Henry is the handsome cop who must rescue the beautiful Grace Finch. Both must learn to trust and rely on each other for survival. There are many twist and turns in this novel.
I really enjoyed this series, and each book was better than the previous ones. The Henry family was awesome, and each brother was really cool. In this one, the murder of their sister 20-some years ago was finally solved, and the book and series ended in a very climatic moment. 5 stars for the whole series.
A good book. Lots of danger and suspense. Two very good main characters and I enjoyed to budding romance between them. I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
Cold Case Secrets by Maggie Black was a great read. I enjoyed the mystery and the romance. Mountie Jacob was a great hero. I had not read the other books in the series so I didn’t know his brothers but they all make an appearance in this book. Jacob is trying to find some escaped convicts and the killer of his 14 year old sister, which has been a cold case. Grace is a journalist and admittedly I don’t typically like them but I really liked Grace. The author created great scenes between Grace and Jacob. And the wedding scene was hilarious. I will be reading more books by Maggie.
Sexual content – kissing and hugging Violence – someone is trying to kill them, and someone killed Jacob’s 14 year old sister
I received this book from Netgalley. I was not required to write a positive review. You can see my full review at More Than a Review dot com where I rate the level of sex, violence, language and drug/alcohol use in books.
Cold Case Secrets is the fourth book in Maggie K. Black's True North Heroes Series. I haven't read any of the previous books and, while I could tell there were events that I missed out on, I wasn't confused by the storyline or characters…it was easy to remember who was whom. ;)
The mystery was good and not easy to guess. The cold case was interesting and also sad. I felt for the hero and his family for what they went through.
The romance was sweet. I liked how neither Jacob nor Grace would have expected to fall for one another, so it was kind of an unexpected romance that both were fighting.
All in all, Cold Case Secrets was very good and I recommend it to fans of romantic suspense.

Maggie K. Black is a genius at non-stop action, even while building a relationship between the hero and heroine. I don’t even think I caught my breath until page 90, and for every action Jacob and Grace took, there was an equally evil reaction right up until the epilogue. I’m exhausted! But I can’t wait for her next one.
This was my first book by Maggie Black, but it will not be my last. Excellent suspense and I enjoyed every moment. Great hero and heroine. Recommended.
I'm used to bad writing from harlequin novels, so that wasn't quite a turn-off for me, though it came close a couple of times. What's upsetting for me about this one is the ending, to be quite honest, not in what happened, but in how is happened and how the bad writing came to such a point that...
Well, let's start from the beginning. As an exciting switch-up from the usual literature for me, I was glad to find something that takes place in Canada, or, more specifically, Ontario--where I'm from. It's good to know some of what's being referenced that's not in America. It just gives it a different degree of intimacy. Anyway, the story centres around Jacob Henry, an RCMP officer who's out scouting in Algonquin National Park for three escaped convicts. His helicopter crew spots journalist Grace Finch making her way through the woods alone, pursued by one said convict, and Jacob is on his way down to save her, during which time they both get stranded alone in the woods during a storm--with 3 killers on the loose, of course.
Now, it's not like this plot was original or anything, but on some points it really had me on edge with where it was going, and I was hooked at finding out how some mystery elements would all fit together into a solution. Granted, again, I don't mind what answers the author gives us, but I think that maybe she was constrained by the page limit requirements of Harlequin or something, because throughout the middle she's building up such a great mystery that she could easily have used up another extra 50 pages to explore and flesh out with a satisfactory ending, but instead she has to give us the answers in a sloppy, obviously-rushed way. After a moderate, easily-flowing narrative for the beginning and middle portions of the book, that kind of ending was the turn-off point for me, and had me rolling my eyes with out much the author was trying to fit in without proper justification. Jumping from A to F to N to Z was supposed to be swallowed with no justification, and, unfortunately, I have a sore throat for such things and cannot swallow.
So, all in all, I'm going to rate this on the middle ground of a rounded-down 3 stars, with appreciation for most of it and what it could have been, but just fell short of being. Close, and definitely worth more reads by this same author in other harlequin stories, but...not really worth putting up with for a re-read.
"Cold Case Secrets" is a Christian romantic suspense novel. It is the 4th in a series, but it works as a stand-alone. The hero feels guilt over not being there to stop is little sister's (unsolved) murder when they were children, so he chose a job involving rescuing people. The heroine is a smart and capable journalist who's determined to be the opposite of her secret, biological father--a criminal and murderer. Only he's threatening to ruin her career by exposing their relationship, so she's traveled deep into the wilderness to retrieve evidence that he says is there and will prove his innocence. But three killers just made a prison break and are armed and roaming free in that same area.
The hero seemed determined to force the heroine into the damsel in distress role by removing her means of defending herself. I'm not convinced that he wouldn't have immediately allowed a man trained to use firearms to keep the extra gun given the situation. I understand he's a strict rule follower and didn't quite trust her, but the convicts were armed and trying to kill her. Still, she refused be a helpless victim and rescued him as much as he rescued her. It took him a while, but he started trusting her and treating her more like a competent partner even as he worked to protect her.
Suspense was created by the continuous physical danger from the wilderness and the killers. I enjoyed the characters and cared about what happened to them. The romance developed as they got to know each other. They became better people and found healing through what they went through together. The hero freely prayed to God for help and protection, and the heroine started doing so after having been angry at God for years. There was no sex or bad language. Overall, I'd recommend this enjoyable suspense novel.
I received an ebook review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.
This is definitely a 5 star! Suspense books like this are so enjoyable and very hard to put down! I loved being taken to Canada. In fact when I went to Michigan we were right on the border! But we couldn't cross over. I was there as a kid though. Maybe next year. This book has allowed me to visit Canada. This was an excellent read that kept reading the whole afternoon until I finished it! I was sad when it was over. I'm glad that the author has put faith in this story. The characters were awesome and so was the plot. Very well done!! My thanks to Netgalley for a complimentary copy of this book! NO compensations were received and all opinions are my own.
This was a great story. I enjoyed it thoroughly. Both main characters felt real, and I enjoyed getting to see their journey to find their HEA.
There were a few scenes that didn't make sense (like the the antagonist being prepared for a circumstance he couldn't have possibly known was coming, and the two main characters jogging (even though an SUV was available) after a traumatic event, while having a meaningful and deep conversation, and at the same time holding hands). Those scenes required the suspension of disbelief beyond what was reasonable.
Putting those little things aside, the story was fast-paced, interesting, and well-worth reading.
Fantastic read! As my first book involving Canadian police forces, I found the new law enforcement terminology fascinating as well as the terrain descriptions. Jacob Henry is a dedicated Mountie that only wants to find out who his sister's killer is and save as many lives as possible. While he unravels secrets from the past as well as the present, he is also learning to trust Grace Finch. Grace also has to learn to trust and put hope into her future as she daringly seeks answers to her father's past crimes. Great story line and of course a very happy ending!
This was a very interesting tale. I have not read the earlier stories, but this one wraps up the mystery that went through the whole series. Good characters and nice suspenseful story telling.
This was an amazing adventure. The love story was incredible. I like how you used a strong female role am by a strong male role. I am excited to read the other stories in this series.
This book is such a twisting suspense filled book! I couldn’t put it down and every twist was something I didn’t catch or would have thought of! Definitely must recommend it to everyone!
My review today is on the Love Inspired Suspense, Cold Case Secrets. This is book four in the series True North Heroes. I really like Maggie's books and have enjoyed this series of the Henry brothers. It was good to read Jacob's story. The book is well written and action packed. I know you are going to love it.
Royal Canadian Mounted Police Officer Jacob Henry is searching for three escaped convicts. He is in a helicopter looking for a heat signature on his small screen. He had to give up his brother's bachelor party and an important meeting about his sister's death years ago to make this search. He sees a heat signature but it's a woman not one of the convicts. As he watches he sees man following her. It's one of the convicts. Jacob repels out of the helicopter to try to help her. What he finds is a reporter he is drawn to, his worse nightmare. He must protect her. The helicopter must return for fuel leaving them on their own with the three killers and something else they didn't expect.
Crime Reporter Grace Finch was assaulted by an escaped convict. His rap sheet went before her eyes as he held a gun in her face. Grace had been brought up here by her secret biological father. He had been blackmailing her. He told her he had evidence that would free him and end the blackmail but she had to help him get free. He is one of the most hated criminals in the land. But before he finds her one of the other killers grab her. She is rescued by a Mountie that she knows well and is attracted to. Can they get out of this mess? Can she keep her secrets?
A terrifying journey as killers are surrounding them and the past seems to be coming alive in front of them. God has a plan for these two. A plan for a hope and a future; also ending the search for answers to the Faith Henry's death. God has a plan for you too. A good plan and not for evil. Give Him your heart and watch Him work in your life.
Grace is a reporter who has a secret, her father is a criminal and he might have some proof that he was framed for a crime he didn't commit. If Grace can gather the information at a location he set and let the world in on the truth then it could help him. Meanwhile Jacob is in the process of solving his sisters murder and trying to find some escape convicts when he finds Grace. Now they both needs to figure out how to get out of the wood when there convicts on the loose.
I loved every moment reading this book. It was so easy to just fall into and get hooked till the very end. I loved that there was so much going on, questions and secrets loomed though out the book and it was a case that needed to be solved - if they can survive it. Then there was the attraction between Grace and Jacob but with Graces secrets getting close could be hard unless she lets him in on the secret and even then it could tear them apart. One thing I did appreciate that even thought they had that attraction they didn't immediately try to jump each others bones, this book is clean. This book is also heavy with the faith if you like that sorta thing. There is so much to enjoy about this book and Id recommend any reader to check this book out if you love a good mystery suspense book.
In Maggie K Black's Cold Case Secrets, the 4th installment in the True North Heroes romantic suspense series, this novel would have you hooked on the first page. For RCMP Detective Jacob Henry, all he wanted to do is to find the truth about his sister's murder, a cold case that remained unsolved for over a decade. For the Ontario regiment, he's on the manhunt for three ruthless convicts who escaped from prison until he ran into Grace Finch, a hostage who needed his help. From the instant they met, there was something about her and what she was hiding from him. On the search to find his late sister's Faith's locket in the cabin, he followed Grace, an investigative reporter, straight there. But it left him with more questions than answers. more than never. For Grace, she had feelings for Jacob and had been rebuffed from him when she wanted to ask him out for coffee. But she kept a secret from him: Hal Turner is her biological father who escaped from prison and wanted to speak to her. Together, they learned to trust one each other and to find out the truth which led them onto a path of danger and a trail of corruption to someone closest to Jacob with a shocking ending on whodunit and why.
I love Canada and the author made me want to go back to visit. Jacob is a Mountie and he still feels responsible for finding who murdered his little sister many years ago. He has tried to avoid a certain reporter both because she is smart and because she is attractive. Grace's life is complicated. She is a great reporter but just can't give Jacob to give her the time of day. The way they are thrown together was humorous and terrifying. I figured out the 'who done it' part well before the end. Still, I enjoyed the story and how it unfolded. Jacob's family made me chuckle a few times and his stubbornness made me roll my eyes. Both the main characters were very well written and could very well be real people. Overall, it was a 3/5 for me.
Thank you to the publisher for the review copy of this book via netgalley. I received this book in exchange for an honest review and the opinions stated above are 100% mine.
I have been waiting for answers and it was so worth the wait. The oldest brother Jacob Henry finds the answers and finds love in the most unlikely person Grace Finch. She has her own secrets. This book was well done and brought answers to a family that has wanted answers for decades. I love how Maggie did this story. With lots of action and mystery in it. The hard part was who murdered their sister for it had affected the whole family even the ones born after her death. I love how Maggie brings the family together in small parts in the book then in the end for the wedding. To solve the biggest problem caused by the bad guy. Its a great ending to the series and putting to rest the mystery of their sister thru Jacob. Who the murderer is will surprise you. I love Grace for she is the perfect complement for Jacob and thru her he gets peace despite her job. I am looking forward to her next series.
What an exciting story! The suspense starts on the first page and never stops until the end of the book. Jacob and Grace make a terrific couple. Both have had heartache and tragedy in their lives, and trust does not come easily to either one of them. They are thrown together in a desperate situation and must work together to survive and be rescued. Their twenty four hours together trying to escape the danger that surrounds them will change their lives forever. It takes all their ingenuity and courage to face the tragedies in their pasts and move towards the future. I had not read the other books in this series, but I was easily able to enter into Jack and Grace’s story. This is a clean Christian mystery/suspense book with a thread of faith. I enjoyed this book and liked this author’s writing style.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
The plot of this novel is interesting although the characters need more development so they won't appear to be so flat. Jacob Henry, a detective with the Royal Mounted Police, has been haunted for many years by the murder of his twelve-year-old sister when he himself was fourteen. Her killer has never been identified, and Jacob would like to have closure in his search for the person who attacked and killed her. While he is trying to help find three escaped convicts in the forests of Ontario, he runs into a female reporter who is on a quest of her own. The two manage to outwit and survive some hairy moments together. The relationship between Grace and Jacob, however, seemed stiff and undeveloped. Nevertheless, the story has enough suspense and twists to make it a likable read.
Maggie K Black has an intense writing style that keeps the plot shifting. I am an avid suspense reader and I usually have the bad guys figured out early on. I am happy to say her books are not as predictable as soon. I have read 3 of the 4 in this series, but will be going back to read the one I missed. Unlike some these are great stand alone stories and are worth a read even if you read them out of order.
I really enjoyed this Christian thriller. Lots of action and danger kept me turning pages, and the two main characters, Grace and Jacob, seemed very real and endearing. I recommend this one highly to suspense fans.
