After too many books of murder and mayhem and fantasy, it was a delightful change to read a charming book about a girl from a poor background being sent to an grumpy Aunt's house and learning to thrive. It is a Cinderella-type coming of age story that has much of the charm of Ann of Green Gables. The author has sketched an interesting and unique caste of characters. She writes with unusual wisdom and insight, dropping gems along the way. My only complaint was the length and detail of the paragraphs, but that is partly due to the period when it was written.

I legit felt like I was just reading Anne of Green Gables... except that while the time span in Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm is explored in 200 pages, Montgomery fleshes the same thing out in 3 books (600ish pages?). And I think you need the latter to really do justice to this kind of story.

I recently decided to start reading different children's books, or reread them, so I can start building a good library for my children. This was a very cute story. I would have loved it as a child! Obviously an easy read for an adult.

I loved the way of write this book, so it was not focus only on the main character, but also focused on the development of her favorite hobbies, writing poetry. She was starting from simple poetry and by develops and improves herself to write great poems to different people. In my opinion, Rebecca character was popular and loved, because it bring the life to the book. Also, the author includes many little details that make the character clearly to the reader.

Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm was a sweet story that reminded me slightly of Anne of Green Gables! Her innocence in the beginning was endearing and it was refreshing to see Rebecca gradually mature as she grew older, and how the perceptions of those around her changed. I loved the illustrations that really helped set the stage for me.

I'm not supposed to complain too much, because it's a classic, but the writing was a bit stilted. I mean, what kind of 12-year-old says, "You and the rainbow have helped me see things in a whole new light. Now I just hope and pray that your plan works. I have to admit that I'm nervous about this." Yuck. And the illustrations were horrible. If you're going to make a Great Illustrated Classic, than please do a good job illustrating. Rebecca is sweet though, and happy. She cares about other people. She just seems to old for her age, and not in a realistic way. And the plot needed some help.

I know this book was written first, but it reads like Anne of Green Gables fanfiction. Rebecca (and this could be due to the abridged version of the text I read) feels like a generic brand Anne Shirley. Both Anne and Rebecca are lively, imaginative, and intelligent. However, Anne is also hotheaded and overdramatic, making her feel like a real person and not a Mary Sue.

Also, Adam "The Groomer" Ladd gave me the biggest ick.

I'm conflicted about this one. Aunt Miranda was entirely unlikable and honestly I'm not that bothered about what happened to her. Karma, you know? But I also feel like Rebecca was broken down from a spunky, fun girl into something more meek and demure. The book might just be a product of its time in the end.

Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm is a story along the lines of Anne of Green Gables. Girl from large family gets farmed out to relatives, or in Anne's case, total strangers. Take my advice. Read Anne of Green Gables. Rebecca is totally lifeless and one dimensional. Especially don't read this version or give it to your children.

... two coinciding firsts for a little girl : 1) riding in the back seat all the way to MO instead of in my own state of IN to visit my Grandparents who had moved to a gangly rural setting with a few dumb cows in the pasture instead of a modest home on a city street.... including chickens - fried chickens - from yard - to scalding pot - to skillet - to my plate... & 2) Reading a chapter book to pass the time.

Sorry, that is all I recall, but the thought of a Sunny Brook will ever linger... I love them still!

Similar to other adaptations of Great Illustrated Classics, this is fine. It gives the general plot but lacks in detail and character development. I'd be interested in reading the original. Has a similar feel to Anne of Green Gables.

If I read this as a child, I don't remember it. Described as an American "Anne of Green Gables," I like Anne better, hesitated between three and four stars.

I thought this would be more Little House, but it was a bit weirder than that and didn't seem to end. The narrative also made her grow up incredibly fast.

This book is a adaption of the classic book Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm by Kate Douglas Wiggin. The adapter Eliza Gatewood Warren did do a good job of retelling the story in a more brief and concise manner, so younger readers can follow along better. However, I did not like how Warren changed several points in the story. I would have given this book five stars if not for the unnecessary changes. Also, when you read the real story first the writing in this book is disappointing. However, this book is a great start for younger readers to begin and later on read the true story. Four stars for a good, not great, adaption and quick read.

There's something about these types of stories (also, Pollyanna, Anne of Green Gables), that really appealed to me as a girl. Plucky, upbeat girl overcomes hardships. I wasn't particularly plucky or upbeat, and didn't have a lot of hardships, but I would have liked to have been Rebecca.

I'm afraid books like these are slowly dying because the vocabulary and writing style are too difficult for today's kids. That's too bad.

I read this book to my daughter because her grandmother gave it to her when she was very young. It is a simplified version for younger readers and I do not know how it compares to the original story. I do like the format of having an illustration on every page. My daughter has autism and a short attention span. This type of chapter book is more interesting for her because of the frequent illustrations.

very few literary characters have that magic to jump from the pages to take you on a timeless journey to live their story and such character is Rebecca from the book Rebecca of Sunnybrook farm written by Kate Douglas Wiggin. her journey from maple to riverboro and her quest to find happiness even in the heart breaking struggles is worth praising. I highly recommend this book.

This is an American version of 'Ann of Green Gables only Rebecca is not an orphan but a poor relation.
For a history lesson in colonial American life this is a delightful version. Rebecca is also a charming character and it's fun to read of her adventures.

A book to enjoy and share with your young readers.

I was reading this out loud to my six year-olds at the same time as a Nancy Drew book. I preferred this one. Even so, the ending felt quite rushed. She grew up in less than three chapters, it seemed, after a luxurious opening to the book.

This book was pretty good. The only problem I have is that is it labeled as humor, but it has no humor whatsoever. Its a good book to sit down and enjoy the whimsical life of young Rebecca and watch her to grow up, but not one to get a good laugh out of.

Found this at my new local library, so have re-read this one. Another wonderful childhood story, with shades of Anne and Emily. Not quite as good though.

Ellie and I are reading this on now. It's good so far! It was a fun read, although it leaves you wanting more of a conclusion, and it's kind of sad.
