Once, he was known as the Cold Ax of the North. Heads piled at his feet, and he was feared by all on the battlefield.
But his people lost the war...
Now, Rothan is a prisoner. He is forced to fight as a gladiator for the entertainment of his hated Imperial enemies. Five years of this humiliating captivity, and he has almost completed his sentence. Just three more days and he is free.
However, here in this wretched Imperial City, he has come to love one thing: the desertland concubine, Bellabel. He must find a way to win her freedom, to take her with him to the North. She must be his.
And so he enters into a bargain with the Ringmaster of the City, a bargain for her freedom, a bargain which will catapult him into a far more twisted fate than he ever imagined.
This book contains harem elements.
Ok the book is entertaining and engaging with good characters and good action. The author kept a good pace with the story and it was good. The problem I have with the story was the absolute worst power struggle where the author has ever major group in the world around the MC go out of their way to betray him. Overall with just a little less political backstabbing I would have enjoyed the book much more. Overall if you like Machiavelli type of world you will probably love this.
Well deserving of a 5 star review. Lots of great world building, self serving characters, And no large dull moments in the story.
The politics are great without being overbearing, just a fact of life the characters need to navigate, not a lecture.
I hate flat characters that just serve to further the story without having individual needs. You know the types, like: here take my horse because you need to get somewhere faster, or let me do whatever you want because your the main protagonist. This story does not have that. It's great seeing a bunch of selfish bastards trying to work together (and against each other) and still the story is able to progress.
And finally pacing. I hate it when the an author goes off on a tangent and losses the momentum of the story or the action. This is a great book for steadily progressing without large “dead zones”.
I liked the way the characters were done in this series. All of them have substance to them. They aren't just there to fill spots in the MC's posse. The story covered a lot of content and plot, while balancing it with action and character development. Overall I'm very impressed. Just an fyi, the intimate scenes are not fade to black and are detailed , which I never mind myself. But I will say the scenes are done right and not just thrown in for the spank bank.
I you love Robert Jordan 's Conan, Fritz Lieber and all rest of the SWORD &SORCERY Worlds. You will be consumed with Dothan and Merry Bunch of followers, both male and female. It's truly a intriguing storyline, with twist and turn where you least expect them. So do Yourself a FAVOR and pick this book up and prepare to LOSE yourself in it. Make sure you don't have any plans lol..
A good solid start with plenty of action and an interesting story, has all the stereotypical tropes that you find but it is fun! If you are fans of Warhammer or Warcraft then this should appeal to you. Eager to read the follow up!
I think this is the beginning of a wonderful new friendship. The characters leap off the pages; the story gallons along at a wonderful clip. I love this world. Now give me MORE!!!
Rothan’s adventure is nothing short of legendary. The action was fast paced and well done and the story was something out of a video game. Can’t wait for the next one.
Great novel, wonderful star of a new series. I am surprised on how contradictory my expectations for this novel turned out to be compared with the quality delivered by it, I did not believe I would find such a wonderful read. I love the attention to detail this work has is no so much to bore someone with the read but no so vague that we find ourselves without context. The consistency with the MC is praiseworthy, even when the author put him in strenuous circumstances is obvious how his character drives him forth. If there is anything that I can consider a complaint with the work is but as enjoyable as it was reading that, I can’t help but feel like it is an easy escape from actually investing and working in the creation of a well-grounded relationship in the group. Even so it was a wonderful read and I will go ahead and dive into the other books in this series.
I did not like this book. Everything was over the top. Too much politics, too much betrayal from everyone.
The other problem with this book is the author felt he had to provide sound effects for grunts sex and the like. Draggghhh grrruhhh. I was surprised there wasn't an "oof" in there somewhere.
It's, mediocre. The worst part here is the MC. He's supposed to be this big strong barbarian-esque Viking. A renowned fighter of high skill with herculean strength and speed to match.
Except, he's not. He's anything but. He's the biggest pushover since Shounen Anime. He is constantly at a loss for words, he lets pretty much everyone walk all over him, is stumbling from messing up to messing up. Even when he fulfills the tasks he was charged with, he'll forego the rewards which every time comes back to bite him in the ass without fail. Yet he never learns. He keeps right at trusting people and acting like a Japanese high school boy.
Also for a fighter of such skill, he can't go a single fight without being beaten to a bloody pulp and surviving only because of his powers. He also gets captured more often than Princess Peach and not once stands up for himself.
This is just the start to the trilogy! I absolutely loved this book series, if you love fantasy I would give this a try a lot erotic scenes plenty of blood and gore with an action packed storyline. The wrap up at the end of this trilogy was amazing I would even go as far to say that I will be re reading this trilogy at some point in the future!
Better than it has any right to be. Briskly paced with memorable action sequences. It's marketed wrong. It should be marketed as a Dark Fantasy story not a harem.
